Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp named his Man of the Match for tonight’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp named his Man of the Match for tonight’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Officially, Virgil van Dijk was given the nod as the game’s best player on Boxing Day. But Klopp had a different view.

Speaking to Amazon Prime via BBC Sport after the game, the Reds boss named Wataru Endo as Liverpool’s top performer on the day.

“Another player who could have been in contention [for MOTM] was Wataru Endo,” enthused Klopp.

“What a game he played.”

Endo stakes his claim again
We’re minded to agree with Klopp here. We also named Endo as Liverpool’s Man of the Match this evening. Good eye, Jurgen.

The Japan international has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks. Having started each of the Reds last three matches, Endo now looks completely settled.

With Alexis Mac Allister still injured, the 30-year-old is the only real option Klopp currently has in defensive midfield.

And although he’s had a few shaky displays along the way this season, Endo now looks capable of playing that role for Liverpool.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Not only has he started four games in 10 days for the Reds, but he’s completed three of those four, too. Klopp has changed those either side of Wataru with regularity, but he’s kept his No.3 on throughout it all.

All in all, Endo has started Liverpool’s last seven games. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet right now.

Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images
That shows the faith the boss now has in him. And with performances like these, the former Stuttgart man is justifying that faith.

It wasn’t all perfect tonight. In fact, Endo could have cost Liverpool the game. But thankfully, Jacob Bruun Larsen couldn’t convert his lax giveaway ball across the Reds’ defence. Endo’s copybook remained unblotted.

We have to say, we weren’t sure about the signing of the Japan captain. But his form of late has completely vindicated the surprise decision to bring Endo in.

Long may it continue!

Man Utd ‘very happy’ with Altay Bayindir in training
BY
HARRY WHITTINGHAM
PUBLISHED 4 HOURS AGO
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has yet to be handed his first opportunity under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

HIGHLIGHTS
Manchester United are pleased with the training levels of backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
The Turkey international could have an opportunity for regular minutes in Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils side in the new year.
Man Utd are also considering the future of Raphael Varane, who has been linked with a return to ex-employers Real Madrid.
Manchester United are pleased with the training levels of backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, as journalist Fabrizio Romano provides GIVEMESPORT with an exclusive internal update on the shot-stopper at Old Trafford.

Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag ensured that the club signed two ‘keepers during the 2023 summer transfer window, with Inter’s Andre Onana also arriving in Manchester.

Bayindir hasn’t got a look-in during the 2023/24 season but could find an opportunity for regular minutes opening up in the new year. Man Utd hope to improve their standing in the Premier League, having already exited European competition after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

Bayindir’s Man Utd career
During the 2023 summer transfer market, Manchester United were in desperate need of signing two goalkeepers. Long-term first-choice stopper David de Gea was allowed to leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract in June after the Red Devils decided against offering the former Spain international a new deal. Man Utd moved quickly in the market to replace the former Atletico Madrid No. 1 and confirmed the signing of Inter’s Onana in July in a deal worth £47.2m.

Late in the transfer window, United would also dispense of the services of Dean Henderson, who had spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest. In the final days of the summer, Crystal Palace acquired the signature of the former England U21 star for a fee in the region of £20m. This left United short in their goalkeeper department and desperate to sign another option between the sticks to compete with Onana for a place in ten Hag’s starting lineup.

On Deadline Day of the summer transfer window, Manchester United confirmed that Fenerbahce goalkeeper Bayindir had signed for the Old Trafford outfit for just over £4m. The 25-year-old signed a four-year deal with the option of a further 12 months, cementing his long-term future with the Manchester giants.

Speaking to the club’s official website (via Sky Sports), Bayindir expressed how it was a huge honour for him to represent Manchester United:

“It is a huge honour to join Manchester United and become the first Turkish player to represent this incredible club. I have a passion for success, and I will give everything to help this special group of players to achieve our ambitions.”

However, the 6ft 6in Bayindir has yet to appear for ten Hag’s side despite Onana’s struggles. But opportunities could knock for the Turkey international in the very near future.

Fabrizio Romano on Altay Bayindir
Romano has claimed that Man Utd are “very confident” in Bayindir and believe they have signed a “very good” backup goalkeeper. The Italian journalist also hints that the second-choice stopper could play a prominent role for the club, with Onana potentially departing for the African Cup of Nations in January. Romano told GIVEMESPORT:

“Man Utd are very confident in Bayindir. They’re very happy with him in training. They believe they signed a very good backup goalkeeper, so they finally have a very good and competitive one. Bayindir is doing great in training and has a great relationship with his teammates. Everyone at the club trusts him. So, they decided to go for him because they knew the potential issue with Onana going to AFCON. So, I’m sure they have 100% faith in and trust him.”

Man Utd transfer news, including the future of Raphael Varane
As the 2024 winter transfer window approaches, ten Hag will consider which players he’d like to see arrive and depart at Old Trafford as he prepares to shape his squad further. According to Capenda Cope, Real Madrid could look to re-sign Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane after David Alaba was ruled out for the rest of the 2023/24 season after suffering a severe injury.

ESPN claims that ten Hag hopes to keep Varane and Casemiro during the January market. Transfer insider Dean Jones has recently told GIVEMESPORT (15th December) that the French centre-back is frustrated at Old Trafford but may not get his move in the upcoming window.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports that Manchester United are eyeing up Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo as a replacement for Antony. Despite the Brazilian only arriving at Old Trafford during the summer of 2022, ten Hag is said to be preparing for his exit and has sent scouts to watch Kubo on seven occasions during the 2023/24 season.

And 90min claims Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart are considering potential deals to sign winger Jadon Sancho. After a public fallout with ten Hag, the former England international has not appeared in a Manchester United squad since September.

Wataru Endo achieved feat tonight unseen at Liverpool for 18 years

ALEX CAPLE
Wataru Endo hit a mark unseen at Liverpool for 18 years when he started for the Reds against Burnley on Boxing Day. Jurgen Klopp has put all his trust in the Japanese international.

Wataru Endo started for Liverpool at Burnley in their Boxing Day Premier League fixture. In doing so, he hit a mark unseen at the Reds for 18 years.

As Michael Reid pointed out on Twitter, Liverpool have just played their fifth game in 13 days. Endo is the sole player to have started every single one – a feat no player has matched since January 2006.

Back then, rotation wasn’t quite as common as it was now. Thus there were actually several players to start five games in 13 days: Steven Finnan, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, Steven Gerrard, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch.

No one did it since, however, as managers collectively cut back on the number of games players started. Endo has been an anomaly then – and in a game he really didn’t need to start.

Endo started slowly to life at Liverpool. In fact, some of his early games were downright bad and it appeared that he was out of his depth.

Jurgen Klopp stuck with him, however, and the holding midfielder is now literally the most consistent part of the starting XI. Of course, a part of that is Endo being the sole holding midfielder in the squad with Stefan Bajcetic and Alexis Mac Allister still injured.

But it also shows just how much Klopp trusts the player. Endo actually went into the Burnley fixture one yellow card away from a suspension. The boss didn’t just trust him to start – he played him for the full 90 minutes.

He never did pick up that yellow, either, and will be available to play against Newcastle United on New Year’s Day. And the way things are going, everyone should probably expect him to start.

Journalists saying the same thing about VAR call that chalked off Gakpo goal

VAR, Paul Tierney and Liverpool make for a decidedly interesting mix in football, albeit a rarely beneficial one for the latter party!

The trio combined once more to deny the visitors what appeared to be a legitimate goal at Turf Moor, with Cody Gakpo denied after Darwin Nunez was adjudged to have fouled Charlie Taylor in the box.

The team at VAR upheld the on-pitch official’s decision on the matter, much to the surprise of journalists observing the event on X (formerly Twitter).

Genuinely surprised that was ruled out. The fact Charlie Taylor immediately put his hands on his head rather than appealed to the referee told you everything you needed to know.

— David Lynch (@dmlynchlfc) December 26, 2023

Burnley got a bit lucky there. There was contact between Taylor and Nunez but probably not as much as Taylor was making out. “Fuck off Tierney” shout the away end after what appears a foul on Gravenberch is not given

The same old story
Where to begin without repeating what many are already well-versed in by this point?

The officials in this country are, for the most part, a bit… crap, aren’t they?

Even with the aid of modern technology, we continue to see some truly baffling decisions made across the English top-flight.

Paul Tierney tells off Trent Alexander-Arnold – (Photo by PAUL ELLIS/AFP via Getty Images)
When will it end? When will things improve? Do we need to get rid of VAR or (fairly) demand more from the Premier League’s officials?

All worthwhile questions, though ones we suspect won’t be answered with any haste.

Liverpool plot sensational swap move for Serie A starFeatured Image
Date: 26th December 2023 at 12:41pm
Written by: Author
Liverpool will be hoping to keep the pressure up on Premier League leaders Arsenal when they travel to face Burnley on Tuesday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side battled to a 1-1 draw against the Gunners at Anfield last time out, leaving them a single point behind Mikel Arteta’s side in the Premier League table.

The German could use the upcoming January transfer window to bolster his squad next month, and it appears that the Merseyside outfit are plotting a sensational move for a Serie A star.

According to Francois Plateau, Liverpool are preparing an offer for AC Milan star Rafael Leao and could consider including current star Luis Diaz as part of a player-plus-cash deal.

The journalist claims that those in charge of the Reds’ recruitment regard the Portuguese as the ‘perfect heir’ to Sadio Mane, who departed Anfield to join German giants Bayern Munich last summer and is now playing in Saudi Arabia.

Leao has attracted interest from Liverpool

Leao, 24, is regarded as one of the best attacking players in Europe, and has 47 goals in 182 matches across all competitions for Milan.

The forward joined the Italian side from French club Lille back in 2019, and his current contract is set to run until the summer of 2028.

Diaz, meanwhile, joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022, and has since made 69 appearances across all competitions.

The Columbia international has scored 16 goals in that time, as well as providing nine assists.

Despite featuring regularly for Klopp’s side, Plateau claims that the Reds could include Diaz in an offer for Leao, with the Premier League side likely to make a player-plus-cash offer for the Portugal international.

It remains to be seen whether or not Milan would be willing to sell Leao, who has already made 19 appearance for the club so far this season.

Dundee boss Tony Docherty has revealed talks are underway with Liverpool about the future of Owen Beck.

The left-back has lit up the Scottish Premiership in the first half of the campaign and his impressive displays even saw him force his way into the full Wales squad. However, due to injuries at Anfield, speculation has emerged that the 21-year-old could be recalled.

Andy Robertson is recovering from surgery, after dislocating his shoulder during the international break following a coming-together with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon. While Kostas Tsimikas suffered a suspected broken collarbone during Saturday’s draw with Arsenal.

Dundee currently sit seventh in the Scottish Premiership, and Docherty, speaking to the Daily Record before the Greece international picked up his injury, is hoping that Beck won’t be heading back to Anfield next month.

He said: “We are still in talks just now. Like Mal (Boateng), it is an important stage for these young players. They are getting regular football.

“They’re also coming up and playing in a prestigious league and getting exposure. They are playing really good teams, against good players at good stadiums.

“There is also the exposure of television and they are all big pluses for the team coming up. They are all thriving. The relationships with all their parent clubs are good.

“We are in constant consultation to make sure we are looking after their players properly and on top of that.

“Down in England it is Saturday/Tuesday and up here there is more time on the training ground and to develop them.

“In terms of Owen, we have had him in the gym to develop him physically. It is another factor and you really need to pull on everything to attract this level of player.

“They do or they wouldn’t send them up. So far it has been successful for Dundee FC and we have been really happy with. It is something we are not blasé about.

“You need to make sure you commit to the parent club and what you promise you deliver. Hopefully, we have been doing that and you see the development of the players. It benefits us but it also has to benefit the parent club.”

Just a point needed to put Liverpool top of table

MARC MAYO
Liverpool can go top of the Premier League table again with a victory against Burnley later today.

Jurgen Klopp’s team will leapfrog Arsenal with a point in the early evening kick-off at Turf Moor, before rivals Aston Villa head to Manchester United later on Boxing Day and the Gunners wait two days to host West Ham.

A pair of draws at home have kept Liverpool on steady pace to challenge for the title, even if they are yet to sparkle and dazzle like true champions might.

Nonetheless, Klopp will point to his team being right in the mix at this point as a near-perfect execution of his plans for the season.

Likewise, Vincent Kompany is out to keep his Burnley side looking up having hit decent form of late in their battle to beat the drop.

Date, kick-off time and venue
Burnley vs Liverpool is scheduled for a 5.30pm GMT kick-off later today on Tuesday, December 26, 2023.

The match will take place at Turf Moor.

OPINIONI’ve had enough of VAR and Premier League referees – they could cost Liverpool the title
John Aldridge reflects on Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal and previews today’s clash with Burnley in the Christmas edition of his weekly Liverpool column

Howard Webb and referee Simon Hooper

I am seriously concerned by the standard of officiating we are seeing in the Premier League on a weekly basis.

Quite how Martin Odegaard’s handball against Liverpool on Saturday evening was missed is an absolute mystery. I was doing commentary on the game and could see it from way up in the stands, so how did referee Chris Kavanagh not spot it? It was absolutely blatant.

David Coote, who was on VAR, deemed it an incident not worth referring Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor for. It just beggars belief, honestly. We’ve had issues in the past with Coote – most notably when he was on VAR the time Jordan Pickford decided to end Virgil van Dijk’s season and didn’t even get a yellow card for doing so.

This was the easiest decision Coote will have to make all season and he’s somehow got it wrong. Odegaard’s hand has moved towards the ball. If that was outside the box, that’s 100 per cent a foul. So what’s the difference with it being in the penalty area as opposed to anywhere else on the pitch?

I was on the train with Liverpool supporters when Arsenal lost and this is what happened
It was played down on the television and was not scrutinised in the same way many decisions are, which was bizarre. It is so poor, it’s shambolic. It doesn’t make any sense as to how it was not picked up by VAR.

Odegaard has panicked when he’s seen Salah moving past him with the ball, and we’ve all done it. This shouldn’t be overshadowing what was a great game, but it is an absurd call and it cannot be brushed to one side. Coote should be taken off duty for two weeks after this because who knows how much of a say this could have later down the line?

This wrong call could be the difference between us winning the league and finishing second. We’ve already had to deal with the debacle of the Luis Diaz disallowed goal at Tottenham Hotspur and now we’ve been involved in another disgraceful decision. When is this going to stop? If it is a 50/50 decision, you can sympathise. But it was a clear penalty, so what has Coote seen that stopped him from flagging it up?

Moving on from VAR, I have to give credit to Arsenal for at least making it an enjoyable game. Unlike Manchester United, they arrived at Anfield with a real purpose and could be proud of their performance. They are evolving as a team under their manager and you can clearly see how they’ve improved.

Our draw with Arsenal was a great result for Manchester City, more than anyone else. They will have been delighted with how that played out and will now fancy their chances of hunting us and Arsenal down. They are going to come back fighting when De Bruyne is fit, make no mistake about it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could have won the game for us during the second half when we flooded forward and struck the crossbar. It was unlucky as it was not a true pass played to him. If we had a striker in that position, they would guide it and let the ball come off their foot. Trent went for power and that’s why it just went a little bit high, but the endeavour and sprinting he displayed to take up that position showed how much it meant to him. He was one of the best players on the pitch yet again, he is so influential. His assist for Salah’s goal was ridiculous.

Injuries beginning to bite

Losing Kostas Tsimikas was a major blow on Saturday night, it was such an unfortunate injury for him after impressing in the absence of Andy Robertson. We now have no fit senior left-back and that is a major worry. Robertson should at least be back next month, which will be brilliant, but it is a waiting game until then.

We really need to keep Joe Gomez fit because if we lose him, we’ve then got a real problem on our hands. Gomez is Mr Versatile, he can play at left-back, right-back and centre-back. That makes him such an asset to the team. He will likely have to fill in at left-back while Tsimikas is out. With James Milner no longer around, other people are going to have to step up and slot in where required.

Alexis Mac Allister can’t be too far away from coming back now, along with Robertson and Jota. We don’t know about Bajcetic and I’m starting to give up on Thiago – I don’t know what has happened there. I’m hoping Luis Diaz’s setback is nothing serious. To lose him for an extended period again would be devastating.

Burnley are up next for Liverpool later this afternoon and they will be bang up for it after earning an impressive win at Fulham on Saturday.

LIVERPOOLLiverpool open talks to sign Fluminense star Ninoby JitDecember 25, 2023

Liverpool have reportedly opened formal talks with Fluminense to enquire about the details of signing Nino in the upcoming transfer window, as per a recent report.

Following Joel Matip’s season-ending ACL injury, the Reds are currently thin in numbers in their defensive department. Although they have Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah as the centre-back option to play alongside, Virgil van Dijk.

But, while Konate has struggled with injury problems since moving to Anfield back in 2021, Quansah is still very young and hasn’t had much experience playing at the highest level.

Liverpool also have Joe Gomes – who can play in centre-back – at their disposal, but it is likely that he would be used in the left-back position following the injury absence of Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas.

So, it appears Liverpool have acknowledged the fact that they need to strengthen their backline in January to continue their title charge in the second half of this season.

Nino to Liverpool
Now, according to a recent report(via The Mirror), Liverpool have started to explore the market to sign a new defender next year and have identified Nino as a serious option.

The report further claims that the Merseyside club have already made contact with Fluminense to enquire about the details of signing the Brazilian in the upcoming window.

The report also says that Nino is set to enter the final year of his current contract so the defender could be purchased in a cut-price deal should Liverpool opt to make a concrete approach in January.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign this term, helping his side win the Copa Libertadores trophy and also guiding Fluminense to the final of the Club World Cup before losing to eventual champions Manchester City.

Nino, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, excellent in defensive contributions and also has the tendency to chip-in with some important goals.

So, the South American – valued at around £10m by Transfermarkt – could be a solid signing for Liverpool to reinforce their defence if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually opt to formalise their interest in acquiring his service next month.
