Liverpool have ‘outstanding’ player who could be surprise stand-in for Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have a player Jurgen Klopp previously dubbed “outstanding” who can fill in during Andy Robertson’s injury absence.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could be forced into making a surprise selection at left-back following Andy Robertson’s shoulder injury. Robertson could be set for months on the sidelines and Joe Gomez may get his chance in a position he hasn’t played since early in his career at Anfield.

Gomez has often been a bit-part player at Liverpool. Injuries have seen him demoted to fourth-choice centre-back in recent seasons.

The 26-year-old has often filled in at right-back in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold. But a spot on the left of defence could be up for grabs in the coming matches.

Robertson suffered a dislocated shoulder while on international duty with Scotland. Liverpool are set to assess the extent of the injury but it is feared he could miss up to four months of action.

Kostas Tsimikas is the direct replacement for Robertson and is set to start Saturday’s Merseyside derby at home to Everton. But Liverpool have a busy schedule, with seven matches in the space of 22 days across three different competitions.

Tsimikas can’t be expected to come in and play every single game and Klopp needs a contingency plan in case he suffers an injury of his own. Gomez could be the player who provides him with that.

Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton in the summer of 2015. His spell at the club started at left-back, with Brendan Rodgers picking him in that position in the first five Premier League matches of the 2015/16 season.

Rodgers had Alberto Moreno fit and available but chose to give Gomez a chance in a position he was not used to. He has rarely played at left-back in the eight years since but Klopp is a big fan and may have to call on him to help lessen the burden on Tsimikas.

That would enable Klopp to continue with Joel Matip and Jarrell Quansah as his backups in the middle of defence, with Gomez offering support in both full-back positions. Klopp previously lavished praise on Gomez after he signed a new five-year contract last year and backed him to be a big part of the club’s future.

Klopp told the Liverpool website: “Joe is an outstanding talent. He is also an outstanding defender and an outstanding human being. He has so many qualities, I could talk about them all day.

“So knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a massive boost – one that everyone who loves Liverpool FC and cares about its present and future should be unbelievably happy about. One of the many wonderful things about Joe is he has experience and youth – that’s not a bad combination.”

Forgotten Liverpool player signed in 2018 still hasn’t played a game for the club

Forgotten Liverpool defender Anderson Arroyo is still yet to make an appearance for the Reds – despite signing for them back in 2018.

Arroyo signed for Liverpool from Colombian side Fortaleza after he impressed Reds scouts at the U20 South American Youth Championship.

Then aged 18, the centre-back – who can also play right-back – was tipped for big things at Anfield, and immediately joined Spanish third tier side Real Mallorca on an 18-month loan upon arriving at the club.

But you’d struggle to find a Liverpool fan who could give you too many details on Arroyo.

ADVERT
That is because he has spent the entirety of his Reds career out on loan, encompassing spells at Belgian giants Gent, Czech side Mlada Boleslav and the Spanish trio of Salamanca, Mirandes and Alaves.

At the beginning of this season, Arroyo moved to FC Andorra for the 2023/24 season, in what is the Gerard Pique-owned club’s second season in the second division of Spanish football.

The 24-year-old is still awaiting his Liverpool debut, and hasn’t even played for the reserve side during his near six-year spell as a Reds player.

ADVERT

That is because of work permit issues, with Arroyo still not qualifying for one. Liverpool.com claim he can qualify if he plays in La Liga, or breaks into the Colombia national setup.

And the Reds clearly still carry hope of that happening, as they handed the defender a new contract until the summer of 2025 at the beginning of last season.

He could achieve that goal with Andorra. The Spanish side are currently in 15th place in the Segunda Division, and are six points off the play-off places after 11 games played.

Arroyo has made eight league appearances thus far in the campaign, but has only started one of his side’s last six games in all competitions after being substituted at half-time during a 4-3 away defeat at Mirandes in September.

ADVERT

Speaking to Liverpool.com in 2022, Arroyo said: “Liverpool have always been attentive to me while out on loan.

“I want to establish myself in European football and hopefully one day stay at Liverpool.”

Liverpool have reassembled at the AXA Training Centre after the international break.

And the Reds are preparing for the 244th Merseyside derby when Everton travel to Anfield on Saturday (12.30 BST).

Jurgen Klopp’s side were put through their paces in Kirkby today. And it was no surprise that Andy Robertson did not feature in the session. The left-back suffered a shoulder injury during Scotland’s 2-0 loss to Spain last week. He’s been spotted in a sling since and is expected to be sidelined for a sustained period.

What’s more, Robertson’s countryman Ben Doak appeared to be absent. The 17-year-old winger missed Scotland under-21s’ 2-1 win over Malta earlier this week because of an injury – and is now a doubt for the Everton clash.

But in better news, it appears Cody Gakpo will be available. The forward has missed Liverpool’s past two games after he picked up a knee injury shortly before scoring in the 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Gakpo is back in full training, though, which hands Klopp a key attacking boost.

Diogo Jota will also be back after serving a one-match suspension following his sending-off at Tottenham. Caoimhin Kelleher was forced out of Republic of Ireland duty after requiring stitches to his knee but could be sighted walking out to the training pitches with his gloves and may be back to deputise in goal.

Meanwhile, the South American quartet of Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Alisson Becker are already back despite playing in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time. After recording a goal and an assist to inspire Uruguay to a 2-0 win over Brazil, Nunez admitted he was suffering from cramp. But it appears the striker will be involved from the bench, at the very least.

Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Conor Bradley were not spotted, though, as they work back from respective injuries. Versatile left-footed defender Luke Chambers could also not be pictured amid reports he rolled his ankle while on England under-20 duty. Chambers had been on the bench in the 1-1 draw at Brighton before the international break, while he came on for his debut in the 3-1 Carabao Cup triumph over Leicester City.

Curtis Jones was out on the grass with his team-mates but he must serve the second of a three-match suspension having been given a straight red card at Tottenham.

Mason Greenwood was informed of Manchester United’s return plans after confirming Getafe’s stance.
francistogor@gmail.com October 19, 2023 in Manchester United – 3 Minutes

Mason Greenwood is currently on loan at Getafe, having made five appearances without scoring a goal.
However, the forward is rumored to want to make the move permanent next summer.

Mason Greenwood, no matter how successful he is at Getafe, has been informed that he will never play for Manchester United again.

On transfer deadline day, Mason Greenwood, 22, signed a season-long loan with the La Liga team after the Red Devils determined it would be best for him to “continue his career away from Old Trafford.”.

Mason Greenwood signed for Getafe
Since January 2022, he had not played football.
In February of this year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm.

Mason Greenwood made his debut during Getafe’s 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo prior to the international break.
He has made five appearances since moving to the Coliseum. The Sun claims that Greenwood is eager to commit to the move permanently, despite the fact that Sevilla is reportedly interested in the forward.

In any case, according to The Express, he will not be staying at Old Trafford.
Mason Greenwood still has more than 18 months left on his current Manchester United contract, but the United hierarchy has made it clear that they see a different direction for him.

As an alternative, the Red Devils have spoken with the former England international in private and have put together a series of steps for Greenwood to advance his career away from Old Trafford.
Having come through the club’s youth system, Greenwood scored 35 goals in 139 games for United.

Last week, Richard Arnold, the Chief Executive of United, gave a speech at a Fans’ Forum outlining the reasoning behind the club’s decision. Arnold stated, “This was a very challenging and complex situation with Mason, as I am sure you can appreciate.”.

“We conducted a detailed investigation over several months, considering all the evidence available. The evidence presented to us contained important facts that were not in the public domain. I made the ultimate decision as CEO that Mason’s career should continue elsewhere.

“It is true that my decision evolved over time, but I believe we came to the right conclusion for all parties. However, I can assure you that we have listened to the feedback and criticism and there are learnings that we can take forward.

“We have already applied some of the lessons during our handling of the Antony case – for example, by consulting Women’s Aid to ensure that the perspective of domestic abuse survivors was considered in our decision.”
