‘Liverpool have agreed a deal’ – transfer done ‘in next 48 hours’ welcome to Anfield done deal

Liverpool transfer stance should be clear after Virgil van Dijk’audition’Jürgen Klopp loved

We are teetering on the final days of the summer transfer window and there is still a lot of uncertainty around Liverpool. Despite starting the season strongly, most recently grabbing a late winner against Newcastle United despite an early dismissal for Virgil van Dijk, Jürgen Klopp still has some issues left to sort out.

There are shortages in midfield and in defense that could still be fixed in the transfer window. But this is a far from ideal market to navigate.

The presence of Saudi Araba has not helped, with a lot of speculation surrounding some of the club’s players. Others have already gone in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, whom Liverpool may not have expected to leave.

As well as Mohamed Salah, the latest Liverpool player linked with a move to Saudi Arabia is Joe Gomez as per Fabrizio Romano, with the Liverpool defender reportedly high on the list of Al-Ittihad’s defensive candidates. The Times has also reported that West Ham is also potentially looking into trying to prize Gomez away from Liverpool.

But the club’s stance should be clear.

Gomez’s form has certainly dipped since his injury woes. Before that, he formed a formidable partnership alongside Van Dijk, which was one of the best in the Premier League.

However, he is still relatively young for a defender at 26 years old, and he should not be discarded. As a homegrown player he is a valuable possession for Klopp, and with Liverpool already short of center-back options the club shouldn’t even entertain his sale.

Especially in the aftermath of his outstanding performance against Newcastle United.

Coming in to replace Luis Díaz after Van Dijk’s sending-off, Gomez stepped into the game and steadied the ship. He produced a quality performance, and helped Liverpool not concede a further goal.

Both comfortable in possession and strong in the air, it was the kind of performance that Klopp will have loved. He said as much after the game (BBC), crediting Gomez for ‘doing well’ after a period without playing, and contributing to a ‘much more controlled’ period for Liverpool.

The boss always asks for his center-backs to be dominant in the air and to be composed on the ball, able to instigate attacks from the back. Gomez did both.

He won five out of his six aerial duels and completed 26 out of 29 passes, with nine of them being forward passes.

Playing on the left-side, in the Van Dijk role, this was one of Gomez’s better performances in recent years, particularly in the center-back position. Over the last few months, Liverpool fans often saw him pop up at right-back, playing pre-season there almost exclusively, and coming on against Bournemouth and Chelsea to play in that position too.

But against Newcastle, despite tough conditions, he showed he still very much has a future as a center-back at Liverpool as well. Amid questions over an eventual Van Dijk succession plan, his hat remains in the ring, having just done well in an ‘audition’ of sorts. Which is why the club should not be considering his exit this close to the transfer window slamming shut.
