Liverpool are open to making a move for a defender in the January transfer window, despite Jurgen Klopp ruling such a scenario out a few weeks ago.
The Reds have lost Joel Matip to a season-ending ACL injury, with Klopp facing up to a lack of depth at centre-back. That injury dealt a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League, with the Reds well in the title race despite Sunday’s draw with Manchester United.
Even though a defender and a new midfielder would seriously boost their hopes of finishing top, Liverpool are not expected to be busy in the winter window. Klopp has consistently played down suggestions that he will be making several moves.

But according to the Daily Mail, the club will be ‘alert to opportunities’ and will make moves if the price is right. Liverpool’s transfer chiefs held a meeting last week to discuss how to approach the January window.
Their plans will depend on which teams have progressed in Europe, with any club dropping out at the group stage likely to be more willing to do deals. The Portugese Primeira Liga is one market that Liverpool are ready to explore.
Goncalo Inacio is one potential option, though he has a release clause of more than £50million. Arsenal are also keen on the Sporting star, with Liverpool also eyeing a potential deal for Porto’s David Carmo.

Elsewhere in Europe, Maxence Lacroix and Lloyd Kelly have been touted, though there are doubts over either player is suitable. The Reds are said to be planning to make a cheap or short-term deal for a defender in January, rather than make a signing for the long-term.
Despite the injury to Alexis Mac Allister, the central midfield position is unlikely to be boosted next month. Liverpool are now heading into the hectic festive period, with Klopp hinting at concerns about the depth of his squad following the draw with United.
“It’s December, it’s the toughest period of the year. Everybody has to get through it somehow, everybody has to dig really deep to get through it. When you are in the cup competitions still then that makes life not easier,” he said.

“Arsenal have a week off, we play midweek against West Ham, which is not a friendly game obviously – it’s a quarter-final. That’s all tough. So, get through this and open your eyes again in April and have a look where you are and then I am more than happy to discuss that.
“I am not nervous or whatever because we didn’t win today or stuff like this, but we all have to learn again to deal with the situation. It’s like nobody expected us there, I didn’t think about it. I thought it was possible, but didn’t really think about it.
“We have our injuries as well – nobody speaks about our injuries, but we still have them and it doesn’t help, especially with the amount of games. It will be really tough. My boys for me today looked like they are really ready just to give it a proper try.”

John Aldridge says 23-year-old Liverpool player is having a torrid time right now
Jordan Harris
Tue 19 December 2023 7:55, UK
John Aldridge has expressed his concern for Dominik Szoboszlai, claiming that the Liverpool midfielder’s form has dipped dramatically in recent weeks.
Dominik Szoboszlai appeared to be an unbelievable signing for the Reds. Liverpool were the one side prepared to trigger Szoboszlai’s release clause in the summer despite there being plenty of interest.
And that decision initially appeared to be a masterstroke. Szoboszlai was one of the best players in the Premier League in the opening weeks of the campaign.
However, the 23-year-old has found the going much tougher lately.
John Aldrige worried about Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai
Jamie Carragher noted that Szoboszlai was so sloppy during the first-half as Liverpool played out a goalless draw with Manchester United at the weekend.

Of course, the Hungarian was not the only one to really struggle against Erik ten Hag’s side. Darwin Nunez was another who had a tough time.
And while discussing Nunez in the Liverpool Echo, John Aldridge noted that he is worried about Szoboszlai’s recent performances.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“I have previously said I don’t think the way we play is necessarily suited to [Nunez’s] style, but I do hope he has a long-term future at the club. It’s not only Nunez who doesn’t look right, Dominik Szoboszlai is having a torrid time at present. He started the season in remarkable style but his form has dipped badly of late,” he wrote.
Reds fans still waiting to see if side will kick on this season
It does feel as though Liverpool’s season could go either way. Heading into the weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s men were top of the table. And yet, they had been nowhere near the most impressive side in the league.
That could either mean that they do fall back at some stage, or that they could be absolutely devastating when everything clicks.
Mohamed Salah has been sensational this season. Meanwhile, the likes of Szoboszlai and Nunez have hugely bright futures ahead of them.
But their recent form does act as a reminder that some of the younger players are not the finished articles just yet.

It’s now ten games without a goal for Darwin Nunez in a Liverpool shirt.
I expressed my concerns over his inability to stay onside last week and we saw the same problem playing out once again at Anfield during the Manchester United match.
My biggest problem with Nunez was not this, though, but rather the chance he had after Luis Diaz saw a shot saved by Onana and, instead of shooting, he stopped to appeal for a penalty. That was just an absolutely crazy thing to do in that position. You have got to play to the whistle, that’s one of the first things you are told as a footballer growing up.

Nunez’s liveliest moment of the match was when he got a booking from the referee, which is not great when you are the man leading the line and expected to deliver big moments. He has zero confidence at the moment and is in desperate need of a goal.

Anfield atmosphere needs to improve
Sunday’s atmosphere at Anfield was poor, there’s no getting away from that.
It was great in the first five or ten minutes of the match, but it just died shortly afterwards. Sometimes you get noise from the fans when the performance gives you a reason to shout, but that shouldn’t be the case. You’ve got to be up for it regardless of what’s happening on the pitch.
We’ve got two massive home games coming up this week against West Ham and Arsenal and we need everyone in the ground to play their part. There are always goals in the latter fixture, so I expect it will be a lively encounter at Anfield.

(Video) talkSPORT pundit fires back at Roy Keane after Virgil van Dijk ‘arrogance’ accusation

Simon Jordan hit back at Roy Keane after the Sky Sports pundit’s criticism of comments from Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Sunday.
The Reds skipper suggested that his side were the ‘only’ team ‘trying to win’ at Anfield, with the outspoken Irishman subsequently accusing him of ‘arrogance’ and taking a dig at the Merseyside club’s record of league title since 1990.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan insisted that the Netherlands defender was justified in his comments and suggested that, given his Old Trafford leanings, Keane was simply looking to have a go at United’s arch-rivals.
The 56-year-old said: “Keane has bit back because he’s a United person, a United fan. He’s watching Liverpool and their position in the world against Man United’s position in the world and he’s given it back.
“I don’t think it’s arrogant. I think he’s probably right. It’s a statement of fact – United came not to lose this game. There’s a difference between not to lose a game and to win a game.
“Liverpool came to win a game; it’s a fair observation and I don’t really think there’s anything arrogant about it. I think it’s a mischaracterisation.”
As anyone who’s watched Keane on Sky Sports in recent years will know, he’s never slow to take a swipe at teams and players, and the level-headed Van Dijk refused to get drawn into a war of words with the former United captain over the accusation of ‘arrogance’.
Any neutral observer would surely conclude that Liverpool showed far more attacking intent than their opponents at Anfield yesterday; and had it not been for sloppiness and poor decision-making in the final third, the Reds would likely have won comfortably.

Liverpool want to sign €70M midfielder in January after talks with agent
by Michael Mongie Today, 19:30 last updated Today, 22:31

Liverpool made contact with the agent of Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha in early December and are now competing with Premier League rivals for his signature.
Jurgen Klopp’s need for a top class defensive midfielder is well publicised in spite of his side’s impressive defensive record in the Premier League.
The Reds were unable to manage a win over Manchester United, succumbing to a 0-0 draw at Anfield, however, with just 15 league goals conceded in 2023/24, no side has conceded fewer.
Yet, having a natural defensive midfielder in the starting lineup remains a hindrance to Klopp’s tactics.
After TEAMtalk reported at the start of December that Liverpool are one of the sides to have “held conversations” with Palhinha’s agent, Record in Portugal report the Reds are competing with five other clubs to sign him.
Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Bayern Munich have long since been interested but Manchester City are also reportedly interested.
While playing for Pep Guardiola may be enticing for Palhinha, he would face the same fate as Kalvin Phillips if he moved to the Etihad.
Rodri, widely regarded as the best defensive midfielder in the world, is simply too good to be displaced by Palhinha.
At Liverpool, however, the Portugal international would be an undisputed starter and could even help guide them to the Premier League title.
Signing the 28-year-old would cost around €70 million (£60.2m) but would greatly enhance their title credentials.
Dropping two points against Manchester United allowed Arsenal to climb to the top of the table but with the Gunners visiting Anfield on the weekend, Klopp’s men have the chance to ensure they enjoy Christmas as league leaders.

Graeme Souness names the Liverpool player who had his worst game ever v Manchester United
Lee Connor
Mon 18 December 2023 18:45, UK
Graeme Souness has said that Liverpool’s midfield didn’t turn up against Manchester United and believes Dominik Szoboszlai was as guilty as anyone.
The Hungarian midfielder has been in superb form since signing in the summer but like everyone else in Red yesterday, looked a bit off the boil.
Szoboszlai has won plenty of praise for his performances up to now. The £60m man has made a difference to Liverpool and he’s rightly been lauded.
However, former Liverpool great Souness believes Szoboszlai was poor against United, as he suggested the Reds’ midfielders weren’t at it.
Souness says Dominik Szoboszlai was so poor v Manchester United
Speaking about the game on TalkSPORT, Souness was critical of the Hungarian and the rest of the Liverpool midfield players.
“I don’t think it tells us much other than the attacking players for Liverpool weren’t on it. The amount of overhit passes, especially in the first half. Szoboszlai had his worst game in a Liverpool shirt. The midfield just didn’t have the key to the door to create enough big chances,” Souness said.
Photo by John Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images
Szoboszlai will be disappointed
Liverpool probably did enough to win the game really but Souness is right, they didn’t create too many clear openings.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Szoboszlai was among a cluster of players really who just looked a bit off it. But he’s been so good so far that any drop off is always going to be noticeable.
The Hungarian will come back flying at some point and there’ll be other games for him to really exert his influence on things.
Right now, Liverpool just need to draw a line under this one and move on. A 0-0 draw with your biggest rivals is not the end of the world.
£120k-a-week Szoboszlai will have his day again and more than likely, he’ll end up being key to any success this season.

Arsenal are gearing up for a massive game against Liverpool in the Premier League at the weekend – it could have major ramifications regarding the title race, as the two clubs are currently in first and second place in the table, respectively.
Despite this, the Reds are likely to face a setback before the game begins. Ryan Gravenberch was taken off the field with an injury during Liverpool’s 0-0 home draw against Manchester United last Sunday – now, his availability for the game against Arsenal hangs in the balance.

On top of this, Liverpool also have an extra game to play, as they will take on West Ham United in the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday, December 20. Arsenal are not without their own injury woes, however.
As things stand, the Gunners are expected to be without Jurrien Timber, Mohamed Elneny, Fabio Vieira, Jorginho, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Saturday evening. Which team will head home feeling full of Christmas cheer?
What has been said regarding Ryan Gravenberch’s availability?
On whether Gravenberch will be available for Liverpool’s game against Arsenal at the weekend, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said in a recent press conference: “We will see. They told me directly after the game it got worse during the game, so that means it was not ‘bam’. He felt a little bit and didn’t show immediately. We hoped it would go by, [but] it didn’t. There was this really intense sprint with the ball which ended on the 18-yard line with a collision.
“I hope it is not that serious but we have in the next 10 days, three more games, so I don’t know if he will be part of them or one of them. We will see, we have to make a scan.”

Liverpool were already without Alexis Mac Allister, Joel Matip, Thiago, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota and Stefan Bajcetic against United and it is unclear if any of those players will be available against the Gunners.

Perhaps it was because Anfield was half empty and the cameras had been switched off that Manchester United supporters suddenly found their voice.
However, what they decided to sing was nothing short of disgraceful, but at the same time, unfortunately, not surprising.
‘Always the victims’ was the song some so-called United supporters decided to belt out as Liverpool fans headed for the exits after the goalless draw. It is a direct and callous jibe about a disaster.
But Liverpool supporters have long been targeted for tragedy-chanting. Fans have taunted Reds supporters by singing ‘Always the victims’ – which is regarded as a reference to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

Reds fans should not still be carrying these horrible stereotypes and being reminded of that terrible day in their history over and over again, but unfortunately they are.
But ‘Always the victims’ isn’t the only song that Liverpool supporters are often forced to endure. We also have reached that time of year when the chants of ‘Feed the Scousers’ resurface.
The ‘Feed the Scousers’ song has been around since 1984. The juxtaposition is as brainless as it is vile.
Sunday was one of those moments when ‘modern’ football fans trotted out the same old shameful songs in the name of ‘banter’. The songs, however, are far from funny.
The chants from United supporters were utterly shameless. They were also depressingly inaccurate.
And to make matters worse, they came on an afternoon when the atmosphere inside Anfield was called into question.
Granted before the action got underway, Liverpool had to release a statement after an incident in which a bottle was hurled at the United team coach as it arrived at Anfield. But in the statement the club confirmed that anyone found guilty could be handed a life ban from attending matches at Anfield.
It was the type of swift action that should be applauded. The incident was also ultimately the mindless act of one idiot.
Speaking during commentary on Sky Sports, former United defender Gary Neville claimed that the atmosphere during the draw was the worst he had experienced at Anfield.

“I have to say, this is by far the worst atmosphere I’ve ever seen at Anfield for a Manchester United game,” he remarked. “It’s really, really quiet so far, other than the first five minutes where they were up for it.”
Now, while Neville might be right, the atmosphere inside Anfield on Sunday might not have been at its best, and perhaps that is because some Reds supporters just turned up expecting a routine win given the form of the two clubs heading into the game.
But even so, with all the talk about the atmosphere, perhaps it would be better if the focus of the football world was on the appalling chants from United supporters.
The chants are an utterly shameful act. Words carry meaning and consequences, and those involved need to be called out, as it is the only way this sad state of affairs is going to end.
