Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott played his part in an important Merseyside Derby win over Everton yesterday.

The 20-year-old took to social media to celebrate a winning return to action for the Reds after the international break.

It was a productive break from domestic football for Harvey Elliott.

After playing his part in England’s Under-21 side winning the Euros in the summer, he’s now taken over the captain’s armband at that level for the next campaign.

His role under Jurgen Klopp this season for Liverpool has mainly seen him come off the bench and that was the case again yesterday.

Everton went down to ten men in the first half after Ashley Young was booked twice but Liverpool simply couldn’t break them down, forcing Klopp to turn to Elliott and Darwin Nunez.

Mohamed Salah failed to make an impact in the match but was on hand to convert from the penalty spot after Michael Keane was penalised for a handball in the box.

He doubled Liverpool’s lead late in the game after latching onto a late counterattack thanks to some fantastic work from Nunez.

Elliott played his role in midfield and provided some much-needed energy after replacing Ryan Gravenberch.

His partnership with Salah on the right is only getting better and he may have now given Klopp something to think about ahead of their Europa League match on Thursday.

Posting on Instagram after the match, Elliott celebrated their derby win and said: “Our city. Enjoy it reds!”

Mac Allister suggested that Elliott was magic yesterday, posting a wand emoji while fellow youngster Tyler Morton simply said: “Proud.”

Cody Gakpo thought the £4.3m midfielder was on fire and Rio Ferdinand agreed after the match that he thought he was very impressive.

Liverpool are still keeping up with the league leaders despite not always putting in their best performances.

Klopp will be encouraged by how Elliott and his Liverpool teammates managed to grind out a result against Everton yesterday despite not being at their very best.

Arsenal dropping points will encourage them and the likes of Luis Diaz picking up their performances when Salah isn’t quite at his best will help.

They have a decent run of fixtures now over the next few weeks before they face Manchester City at the end of next month which will decide whether they’re serious title challengers or not.

‘HE GOT ONE’: JORDAN PICKFORD CAN’T DENY ONE THING ABOUT MO SALAH AFTER LIVERPOOL BEAT EVERTON

Jordan Pickford has admitted that Mohamed Salah got the better of him as Liverpool recorded a 2-0 win over ten-man Everton at Anfield on Saturday.

It was a Mohamed Salah brace that separated the two sides, including the 31-year-old opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

Liverpool fans have seen their star man miss penalties before, including at Anfield, so it was never a certainty that this one was going to hit the back of the net.

But he was on the money this time around, with Jordan Pickford, who was in between the sticks for Everton, admitting that the Liverpool speedster is a ‘really good penalty-taker’, as he told Premier League Productions (21/10/23 at 2:45 pm).

Even though the scoreline read 1-0, Jurgen Klopp’s side went into stoppage-time still fearful of a late equaliser from the visitors.

But as Sean Dyche’s side pushed for that goal, it opened up space on the counter, with Mo Salah helping himself to seconds in stoppage time.

Mo Salah penalty
“He’s a good penalty taker,” said Pickford. “I just thought in that instant of the game, maybe because it was a pressure penalty that he might go down the middle.

“But he’s a really good penalty-taker and he got one on me today.”

Mo Salah – one of the world’s best
This man doesn’t seem to show any signs of standing still or stagnating in his career, in fact, he is getting better and better by age.

There is only one Premier League game this season – defeat at Tottenham – where Salah hasn’t scored and assisted.

And as the whole footballing world has spoken about, the £35 million signing (Sky Sports) should have had an assist in that game, only for the well-documented mistake from the officials.

Still, after Liverpool missed out on Champions League football last time out, they are making sure that they are going to return this term and push for the title again whilst they are at it.

Liverpool fans are all saying the same thing after Ryan Gravenberch’s first league start
Liverpool fans were hugely impressed by Ryan Gravenberch in his first Premier League start.

Football Insider has been gathering the reaction of fans as Gravenberch made his first league start since joining the Reds in the summer window.

Gravenberch made the switch to Anfield from Bayern Munich last month and made his eighth appearance for his new employers in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton, but only his first league start.

The midfielder played 62 minutes of the Merseyside derby and completed 100 per cent of passes, long balls and dribbles in the first half.

He also made three interceptions, provided one key pass and won five out of seven ground duels in the first 45 minutes.

Fans have been blown away by the centre-mid since his arrival on Merseyside.
