Liverpool face complication as manager offers himself to Barcelona

Liverpool face a complication in their new manager search after an offer was reportedly made to Barcelona. The Reds aren’t the only ones in the hunt this summer.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Thomas Tuchel has offered his services to Barcelona. The Catalonians will need a new boss for the 2024/25 campaign after Xavi announced he was stepping down after the season.

Now, Tuchel remains the boss of Bayern Munich. The suggestion here is that he knows his days in Bavaria are likely numbered, with Bayern in grave danger of not winning the Bundesliga for the first time since 2012.

Thus Tuchel wants to get ahead of things. He’s aware that Barcelona are fans of his and he’d like to make the jump – it could be something that benefits all parties.

Liverpool, though, could see it as a complication.

There’s next to no doubt that they’re after Xabi Alonso as their new boss. Alonso is the coach of Bayer Leverkusen – the team that looks like ending Bayern’s dominance in Germany.

Alonso is a former player of Liverpool’s, of course, and he allegedly has a verbal agreement with Leverkusen to leave in the summer for one of his former clubs. However, Bayern are also one of his former clubs.

If Tuchel does leave – and it appears he’s actively trying to – then Alonso will likely top Bayern’s list of replacements. They’d also carry Liverpool’s ‘advantage’ with the Spaniard as one of the three clubs he dreams of managing, along with Real Madrid.

Now, there’s a lot of time for things to change here. Alonso reportedly won’t talk with other clubs until the season is over, while the Reds don’t plan on appointing a new manager until they have a sporting director.

Time will tell, then. Liverpool will hope that Tuchel remains at Bayern or this could become a complication this summer.

Whilst the silverware and Anfield development during Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club will take the headlines when he makes an emotional exit this summer, one key aspect that musn’t be looked past is the emergence of Liverpool’s academy since the German took over. It was getting to a stage when the Reds looked unlikely to find their next Steven Gerrard and then there may have been concerns that Trent Alexander-Arnold was a one-off.

After almost a decade on Merseyside, however, Klopp’s impact is finally beginning to show in the academy.

Liverpool have had plenty of promising homegrown stars over the years, but the majority have eventually struggled. Ben Woodburn got his career off to a flying start when he became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer at 17-years-old in a League Cup victory over Leeds United. Since that famous day in 2016, however, things have gone downhill. The academy graduate now plays for Preston North End in the Championship.

Then of course, Alexander-Arnold came along, who proved to be no one-goal wonder after striking a stunning free-kick in the Champions League qualifiers against Hoffenheim. The right-back has got better and better ever since and is now Liverpool’s vice-captain and the highest assisting defender in Premier League history.

More recently, meanwhile, the likes of Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley have stepped up and played important roles under Klopp and look likely to play a key role in the coming years.

They’re not the only players to have impressed Klopp though. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Lewis Koumas has been promoted to first-team training after Klopp was reportedly “wowed” by the 18-year-old attacking midfielder.

Named in the first-team squad for Liverpool’s recent 3-1 win over Burnley, Koumas has been described by a well-placed source at the club as a “diamond” as per Veysey. The forward, who operates on the left-hand side, converted from a midfielder last season and has been flying ever since – scoring 12 goals and assisting a further three in 15 games so far in the current campaign.

It’s no surprise that Liverpool U21 manager Barry Lewtas has spoken so highly of Koumas, given the numbers. Lewtas told the club’s official website: “Lewis has been brilliant for us, he really has.

“He is a real energetic frontline player, loves to run in behind, he is aggressive in how he approaches the game and has really good technique. He is a really good footballer. He has fitted in great with the lads, he has a fantastic character and he just gets on with it, he really does. The other day when we were talking about Lewis, you forget he is still an U18 player. He has really matured the way he plays.”

Jurgen Klopp shocked the football world when he announced that he would be leaving Liverpool and the end of the season and Jamie Carragher has been sharing his thoughts.

Speaking on CBS Sports, the Scouser said: “Devastated, I thought it was a joke when I was first told – I did, I couldn’t believe it. I was just stunned…

“Not just for the supporters but mainly for him, I hope he goes out with a bang”.

It was a feeling shared by many of our supporters and after the initial shock started to wain, there’s now been an effort from everyone to try and ensure this has a fairytale ending.

We can only do that by being loud and proud, whilst the players must listen to their manager and hope that we can end the campaign with a trophy parade.

Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly showing a ‘strong interest’ in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers star Pedro Neto in the upcoming transfer window, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Merseyside club have reportedly been exploring the market to sign a new right-winger as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah – who has been linked with a move away from the club in recent times.

Leroy Sane, Jarrod Bowen and Nico Williams have all been mentioned as potential targets for the Reds but Neto is reportedly on their radar as well.

According to the report by Fichajes, Liverpool are showing a ‘strong interest’ in signing Neto and they could make a concrete approach to secure his signature in the upcoming transfer window.

The report further claims that Wolves are currently in financial difficulties so they could be open to cashing-in on Neto to inject some money into the club but they wouldn’t let him leave for cheap and want a ‘considerable sum’.

It has recently been reported that the West Midlands club could demand a fee of around £60m for Neto so Liverpool will have to splash a big fee to purchase the Portuguese international.

However, Fichajes states that acquiring Neto’s service won’t be straightforward for Liverpool as Arsenal are also keen on securing his signature to reinforce their forward department.

The Gunners have seemingly been looking to sign a new right-winger to support Bukayo Saka. However, despite being linked with numerous options they haven’t opted to sign anyone yet.

Arsenal hold a long-term interest in Neto as they previously wanted to sign him to reinforce their attack. But, Wolves didn’t allow his departure so a deal didn’t come to fruition. Nevertheless, with Wolves now willing to cash-in on him this summer, Arsenal could finally manage to purchase the forward.

Neto has displayed glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent times so he would be a great coup for Arsenal or Liverpool if either club manage to secure his signature.

But, it is going to be interesting to see who will eventually win the race to sign Neto should the Gunners go head-to-head with the Reds over this deal during the off-season.

With the Premier League title race potentially the closest it has been for 10 years, every advantage – no matter how minimal they are – will be required.

Liverpool were involved in that three-team battle in the 2013-14 season. They infamously finished second to Manchester City. Steven Gerrard’s unfortunate slip against Chelsea, who would take the bronze medal, has gone down in history for the wrong reasons.

A decade later, Liverpool and City are again doing battle to be crowned champions. It’s become the status quo in recent years. Pep Guardiola’s side have won been crowned champions in four of the past five seasons, with the Reds ending their 30-year wait for a title in 2020. Jurgen Klopp’s side have played bridesmaid twice to City in 2019 and 2022 – agonisingly finishing just a point behind on each occasion.

It’s Liverpool who currently set the pace at the top of the Premier League table by two points. And while City may have a game in hand, a meeting at Anfield on 10 March means that the Reds can control their own fate.

However, Arsenal have scarcely given up hope. Their 3-1 victory over Klopp’s troops at the Emirates Stadium put them back within breathing space. That was followed up by a 6-0 trouncing of West Ham United.

With three months of the campaign remaining, it means that it could come down to fine margins. It could come down to which players for their respective teams can avoid injury or return to action. It could come down to the acumen of Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta.

What’s more, there’s no doubt that fans have to play their part. How much of a boost it could prove then that Liverpool’s Anfield Road End expansion has been given the green light.

The Reds welcomed a record league crowd for their 3-1 win over Burnley last Saturday. Just short of 60,000 were inside Anfield to take in the action. Work on the stand, which was originally set to open in September, was pushed back after main contractors the Buckingham Group entered administration.

And against Burnley, the increase of fans inside the stadium was marked. After the players’ pre-match handshake ensued and You’ll Never Walk Alone started to play, the sheer number of scarves that adorned the Anfield Road End was staggering. Throughout the game, as much noise was created from there as the famous Kop.

At the end of the triumph, the Kop got one of Klopp’s revered triple fist pump. But those who watched on from the Anfield Road End got one of their own. A nod of gratitude, perhaps. Those in the Main Stand were also treated to one.

Liverpool have seven home games remaining in the league. They have just shown their new weapon – and there’s nothing Man City or Arsenal can do about it.

Liverpool have drawn up a shortlist of seven managers in their search for a successor to manager Jurgen Klopp, though are only just beginning the formal hiring process, 90min understands.

Klopp announced towards the end of January that he would be leaving Liverpool this summer, much to the shock of the footballing world.

Liverpool also have a sporting director vacancy to fill, and 90min understands the club would prefer to find a candidate here before turning their full attention to the manager situation with that hire on board. Nevertheless, the club have had two months to do their due diligence on Klopp’s replacement after he informed them of his decision privately in November.

Sources have confirmed to 90min that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the early favourite and frontrunner for the manager’s job, though he is not guaranteed to get the gig due to the ongoing sporting director search.

Alonso would be interested in a return to Liverpool as manager, but he is currently focused on trying to deliver Leverkusen their first ever Bundesliga title – they moved five points clear at the top of the table with a 3-0 win against Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Liverpool are not the only former club of Alonso’s that are admirers of his work, with Real Madrid aware Carlo Ancelotti will not be around forever despite recently signing a new contract, while Thomas Tuchel’s future at Bayern has been called into question even if he is safe for now.

Alonso could also continue to build at Leverkusen, though 90min understands he is aware his success so far is in part down to the quality of players at his disposal, and the club are expected to sell at least two of their stars in the summer transfer window. Joining Liverpool this year instead of waiting another season for an offer from Madrid or Bayern could therefore suit the Spaniard.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi and Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann are also serious contenders, as is Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou, who was a boyhood Liverpool fan. However, Spurs are completely relaxed about the Greek-Australian’s situation and believe he will stay – Postecoglou may even decline an interview if approached.

Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim is admired by those upstairs at Anfield, but he is thought to be part of a wider search and not a leading contender at this stage due to his lack of experience in a top-five league. Aston Villa’s Unai Emery and Benfica’s Roger Schmidt have both been discussed internally at Liverpool.

As such, he is not a contender to replace Klopp, but Liverpool would be in mind to offer him an interview out of respect if he were to ask for one.

Mohamed Salah looks set to be involved in Liverpool’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brentford after making a return to team training on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old forward has been out of action since pulling up with a hamstring injury in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on January 18. He hasn’t featured for Liverpool since the 4-2 thrashing of Newcastle United at Anfield on New Year’s Day.

Now, though, after returning to team training on Tuesday, he could make his first Reds appearance in six weeks at the G-Tech Community Stadium on Saturday.

If all goes well between now and Saturday, Salah should be part of Liverpool’s travelling contingent that takes to West London over the weekend. Salah took part in team training at Kirkby on Tuesday and was involved in rondos at the AXA Training Centre.

Should he return, it would be a timely boost for the Reds, who face Chelsea at Wembley in the 2024 League Cup just eight days later.

Trent Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold is set for a race against the clock to be fit for the League Cup final later this month after Jurgen Klopp confirmed the defender had suffered a recurrence of the knee injury he sustained against Arsenal last month.

On Monday, the ECHO reported that Alexander-Arnold was still awaiting the result of a scan in the aftermath of being withdrawn at half-time against Burnley on Saturday.

The No.66 was, as expected, not involved in team training at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Dominik Szoboszlai
The Hungarian midfielder has missed Liverpool’s last two matches with an aggravation of the hamstring injury that sidelined him after the Reds’ 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year’s Day. Now, the number 8 is in a race against time to be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on February 25.

Klopp said: “Dom is running outside at the moment, in the winter rain, and is not ready for tomorrow, of course not. Then we have to see. It’s like it always is with these tendon things; pretty quickly the player is pain-free, and then it’s all about… it’s muscle, [and] it’s pretty much the same that he had before.

“That’s obviously really not good that he got that again. He didn’t feel a great issue, but when you see then the pictures, you just have to take him out and now we are fighting for days, if you want. Is it Brentford, is it the [Carabao Cup] final or is it after the final? I don’t know in the moment.”

Thiago Alcantara
Midfielder Thiago had only just returned to first-team action after a lengthy spell out, but alas, he has already been reunited with his close friends in Liverpool’s medical team after picking up a new muscle problem against Arsenal.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Klopp said: “Thiago, obviously, is not cool. Everything looked absolutely fantastic in training. It’s a muscle issue; we don’t know the extent yet. We have to wait there a little bit, but it’s not cool, of course. It was really not good news for him, for us, for everybody. On top of losing the game already and having that is not good.

“Yes, [I expect him to play again this season], but we didn’t really think about that, in the moment we just treat the injury and get a full assessment done and knowing exactly where it came from. It’s just the normal procedure and it would not be a big story if he wouldn’t have been out for that long a time. That’s how it is. It’s not a big, big injury, definitely not, but it’s obviously something nobody needed.”

Stefan Bajcetic
Stefan Bajcetic has endured a frustrating period in his fledgling Anfield career after a number of injury problems. He enjoyed a strong debut campaign last season but saw it end prematurely after suffering a stress response in his adductor in March.

Bajcetic returned in September with outings in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, but his involvement against LASK Linz proved to be his last after suffering a calf issue. It remains unclear when he will return to full training.

Joel Matip
Joel Matip is recovering from surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 32-year-old, who is in the final months of his contract at Liverpool, is likely to miss the rest of the season. The centre-back was left stricken in the 70th minute of the dramatic Premier League 4-3 win over Fulham in December after an off-the-ball inciden

Ben Doak
Ben Doak is out long-term with a serious knee injury sustained playing for the under-21s. Assistant manager Pep Lijnders said of Doak’s condition: “That’s not a good one. He tore his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery.

“That one will take (a) longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger, and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. We will wait for him.”

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Pedro Neto for quite some time and once again, the Portuguese international is in the lime light.

According to a the latest update exclusively provided by Football Insider, a Liverpool offer worth £50m-£60m will be accepted by Wolves for Neto

The Merseysiders are looking for a long term replacement for Egyptian superstar, Mohamed Salah, and the former Braga attacker would be a quality signing.

Neto has missed eight Premier League games this term due to a hamstring injury but when fit, he has been in unstoppable form.

He is one of the fastest players in the top flight of English football and has consistently troubled the defenders with searing pace and dribbling.

So far, the 5-capped Portuguese has started 15 games in all competitions for Wolves and directly contributed in 13 goals (3 goals and 10 assists).

Salah has netted 18 goals and provided 9 assists this season but is currently out with a hamstring injury.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claims that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has had one eye on the Liverpool job for a while.

Liverpool fans were going through a quiet January transfer window and probably weren’t expecting much in the way of significant news.

Well, up stepped Jurgen Klopp to announce that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

Nobody saw this coming and Klopp will soon bring his time at Anfield to an end as he seeks a rest after more than eight years in the Reds dugout.

The attention remains firmly on the Premier League title race but Liverpool will also be eyeing up potential replacements for Klopp and one name keeps coming up…

Guillem Balague shares ‘secret’ on Xabi Alonso to Liverpool
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the man in question having worked minor miracles since taking the job in 2022.

Leverkusen were at the wrong end of the Bundesliga table under Gerardo Seoane but now sit five points clear at the top of the table.

Saturday’s 3-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich showcased Leverkusen’s exceptional defence and their devastating attacking potential.

HITC Football understands that Alonso is the number one option inside Liverpool right now with Klopp heading out of the club.

Liverpool fans want Alonso and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has already predicted that the Spaniard will replace Klopp.

A former Liverpool midfielder in his playing days, Alonso is the popular choice and it seems that he has long had an interest in the Anfield job.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has now told The Football News Show that there is a ‘secret’ plan in place between Alonso and his agent.

Balague claims that Alonso named Liverpool as one of three destinations he wanted if he succeeded at Leverkusen – Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Alonso played for all three clubs in his playing days and it’s clear that the emotional pull of returning to one of them – or even multiple over the course of his career.

“I’ll tell you a little secret,” said Balague. “When he went to Bayer Leverkusen, he told his agent ‘do you know what, I am thinking that if it doesn’t go well at Bayer Leverkusen, I’ll go back to Real Sociedad. But if it goes well, from here, it’s Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich.”

“Let me add Manchester City to the equation and that’s where Xabi Alonso could go next. When, is a different matter,” he added.

Hearing that Alonso has identified Liverpool as a potential destination is great news for the Reds, but it’s not all good.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is under huge pressure and Real Madrid may see Alonso as the natural heir to Carlo Ancelotti.

Liverpool just have to hope that the timing works in their favour and that Alonso picks a move to Anfield at the end of the season.

Amid reported interest from Liverpool and other top clubs across Europe, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has reaffirmed his commitment to his current side, Newcastle United, despite concerns over the club’s financial situation.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for a reported £40 million fee, has been instrumental in the club’s recent success, notably helping them to finish fourth in the Premier League last season and seal Champions League qualification after a two-decade hiatus.

In a bid to stave off interest from the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea, the Magpies tied down Guimaraes to a new five-year deal back in October.

However, it has since emerged that Newcastle may be forced to sell players to avoid breaching financial fair play rules. As a result, interest in the 26-year-old has been reignited.

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL
Now, in light of persistent rumours linking him with a move away from St James’ Park, Guimaraes has made it clear that he intends to stay with Newcastle for the long haul.

After Newcastle’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday night, the Brazilian addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future in an interview with Sky Sports, saying: “Sometimes people speak a lot about me. I just speak a lot about football. I’m very happy here and I like how the fans think of me here.”

“I enjoy my time here. The fans have been unbelievable for me and my family. I hope this can keep going for a long time.”

The midfielder then left it in no doubt about where his focus remained: “Let the people speak. We have to get Europe again, try for Champions League. I know it’s difficult but definitely [we are aiming] for Europa League.”

Despite already strengthening their midfield with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo in the summer, Liverpool continue to be linked with a number of midfielders from around the round.

In Guimaraes, they would be getting themselves a player that is proven at the highest level. But whether admiration ultimately turns into concrete interest will hinge on who replaces Jurgen Klopp in the dugout this summer.

Manchester City are understood to have all but completed a deal taking Savio away from Girona this summer.

The Sky Blues have acted with the benefit of their multi-club partnership as part of the City Group, utilising a link to a fellow club asset.

Fabrizio Romano reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the 19-year-old attacker is closing in on a July switch with a ‘deal at signing stage now’.

The attacker has played a key part of Girona’s push for the La Liga title, registering 14 goal contributions in 28 games, with the club five points off Real Madrid at the summit.

A worrying sign for football
Whilst we’re not opposed to partnerships, per se, that benefit both player and club, this new trend of multi-club ownership is surely a worry for the sport.

Spare a thought for Ligue 2’s Troyes who have virtually been used as a pawn in the process without getting any of the benefit (Savio has not played an official competitive fixture).

Whilst officials close to the City Group will argue they’re playing within the current rules, this vision of football is perhaps not quite what the rest of us imagined or bargained for.

What’s the goal? Does this serve football’s best interests?

Never mind Manchester City… would it still prove as appealing if the likes of, say, the PIF were to start snapping up multiple clubs to feed Newcastle United’s growth?

Jan Aage Fjortoft expressed his delight at Liverpool’s decision to bring Sven-Goran Eriksson into the management team for an upcoming legends game.

The Viaplay journalist tweeted his thoughts on the matter on X (formerly Twitter) this afternoon.

A team of Anfield greats will take on AFC Ajax Legends on March 23, with the former England boss joining Ian Rush, John Aldridge and John Barnes in the dugout.

How did this come about?
The 76-year-old had revealed the heartbreaking news in January of his fight with pancreatic cancer and his terminal diagnosis.

The head coach shared his adoration for Liverpool Football Club during recent interviews, along with his regret at having not managed the outfit.

Fan petitions followed online urging the club to get the Swede in the dugout for the upcoming legends clash. Jurgen Klopp even offered his colleague his office for the day to fulfil a lifelong wish.

We’re delighted that one of Eriksson’s greatest wishes will be granted in March.

Liverpool look to have been dealt some good news on the injury front ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

The Reds had to make do without a number of first-team players at the weekend, struggling to overcome Burnley as a result. But overcome the Clarets they did, and they look set to be rewarded with some positive developments.

Both Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker missed Saturday’s match through illness. As per a video posted on Liverpool’s official X account today though, the defensive pair were back at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday. Good news.

There was further sightings for Liverpool fans to be happy with, as well. After being injured since September, it’s still unclear when young Stefan Bajcetic is expected to make a return.

However, after he was seen geared up in full training kit today, that could now be close. Having been spotted arriving earlier in the video, Bajcetic was then kitted up while playing darts in the canteen with Bobby Clark. Encouraging signs.

This of course is not a definitive sign that Bajcetic is back available for Jurgen Klopp, or even that he’s back in training at all.

After five months out, it may take the 19-year-old a little while to get up to speed even when he is back on the grass.

But it is certainly a positive sign for a player who is said to have been getting frustrated with his rehabilitation. It’s been a long time without a game for Stefan.

In his absence it’s been easy to forget just how highly the teenager is rated at Anfield. Bajcetic has been earmarked for a really important role moving forwards.

This season, that has had to have been put completely on ice. With Liverpool’s midfield transforming, the former Celta Vigo talent looked set to play a big part in that. So far, that hasn’t happened.

Nevertheless, Klopp has never forgotten about Bajcetic. The manager described him as being an ‘incredible’ talent in November and clearly has a plan for him.

Whether Bajcetic is able to take advantage of that plan before Klopp leaves in the summer remains to be seen. But he’ll certainly be a brilliant option for the new manager coming in.

With other issues in midfield at the moment, Bajcetic’s return would be a timely boost for the Reds as they navigate an important part of the season.

Let’s wait for further updates before getting too excited. This is great to see, though.
