Konate concern as Quansah shines

Jarell Quansah had good reason to be annoyed the last time Liverpool stepped out in the Europa League.

The 20-year-old thought he had scored a dramatic late equaliser – and his first senior goal – to earn the Reds a point at Toulouse only for it to be disallowed for a debatable handball against Alexis Mac Allister that was that much earlier in the play it seemingly happened the previous day.

This, though, has already been a memorable breakthrough campaign for Quansah, with the visit of LASK Linz a sixth start – three coming in Europe.

Quansah again demonstrated both solid defending and real composure on the ball, belying both his tender years and lack of experience at this level, epitomised when racing back to make a good block to preserve Liverpool’s clean sheet after a rare LASK break in the second half. Those who have guided the centre-back through his time at the Academy should be proud.

Not quite as convincing, however, was centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate. That the Frenchman started was an indication of how he has fallen behind Joel Matip in the pecking order, and having been absent several times through injury this season, there remains a certain rustiness to his play the Reds continue to manage.

Regardless, Konate will know there remains plenty of room for improvement.

Elliott asks Szoboszlai question

If there’s one area of the ‘midweek’ team intent on making the most of their opportunities, it’s the midfield.

With Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai having largely locked down two of the three slots and Curtis Jones still having the edge for the third, the cup games have given a platform for the likes of Harvey Elliott, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

Gravenberch’s all-action style and willingness to stretch his legs on forward runs mean he will always catch the eye and, as evidenced at Manchester City at the weekend, he is warming to the role.

But while the Dutchman had his moments here, it was Elliott who was the more impressive, his busy showing again underlining why he has regularly made an impact this campaign, whether from the bench or, as has been the case in every Europa League game this season, as a starter.

The 20-year-old couldn’t have done much more to press his claims for a second Premier League start of the season against Fulham on Sunday, particularly with Szoboszlai’s level having dropped in recent outings on the right of the engine room.

Endo, meanwhile, will again benefit from only a fourth full 90 minutes since arriving at Liverpool, and grew into the game at number six. Mac Allister, having admitted to falling asleep in a team meeting before the City game, clearly needed the rest.

Anfield remains inhospitable

Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match call for this to be a famous European night was always going to be one of his more ambitious shouts as Liverpool manager.

But while Anfield couldn’t quite rouse itself fully on a bitterly cold evening – the honours for loudest fans went to the relentless visiting support – it remains inhospitable for the away team.

The Reds have now won their first 10 home matches in a season in all competitions for a fourth time, having previously done so in 1893/94, when they won the first 16, 1972/73, when they won the first 11, and most recently in the Double-winning season of 1985/86, when they triumphed in the first 13.

Sunday’s Premier League visit of Fulham will be the last in which the upper tier of the imposing new Anfield Road stand will remain closed, with supporters back in for the December 17 visit of Manchester United.

And by the time the last 16 of the Europa League comes around in March, there are likely to be more than 60,000 inside. Those famous European nights may well be on the horizon.

Report: Jurgen Klopp gives Liverpool green light to sign French star playing in Ligue 1
By Shrishh Attavar / December 1, 2023
Liverpool receive the ‘green light’ to sign Khephren Thuram
Liverpool fans may have something exciting to look forward to in the upcoming winter transfer window, as reports continue to suggest that the Reds remain the frontrunners to secure the services of Khephren Thuram.

The latest update on the situation indicates that Jurgen Klopp has given the green light for the pursuit of the French midfielder, aiming to add the final piece to his midfield puzzle.

Italian sources initially touted Liverpool as the favourites in the race for Thuram, and now, with Klopp’s approval, the player could well and truly join the Reds over the January transfer window if all goes well.

TEAMtalk via ECHO that Jurgen Klopp has greenlit a move for the Frenchman. The Reds’ boss has instructed Anfield decision-makers to make a move for the talented midfielder, signalling the club’s intent to secure Thuram‘s signature.

Thuram to the Reds?
The potential cost of this midfield reinforcement stands estimated at £38.8m and that fee for someone like Thuram is surely decent considering how bonkers the current market situation is.

Thuram has certainly been garnering attention for his performances in Ligue 1, and Klopp’s interest indicates a strategic move to enhance Liverpool’s options in the middle of the park. However, whether or not Thuram’s profile is the kind Liverpool actually need to sign at this moment in time is still a question.

If the pieces align, Liverpool could welcome a new face to the squad, signalling the club’s commitment to staying competitive on multiple fronts.
