Latest Liverpool injury news as four players miss Southampton and Darwin Núñez a doubt

As the curtain finally comes down on another season, Jürgen Klopp and his players will be looking to sign off in style win a win away at Southampton. The Reds will have to make do without a host of stars, as Darwin Núñez faces a race for fitness.

Currently sitting in fifth position in the Premier League table, Liverpool will have to make do with a place in the Europa League for next term, following what has been an inconsistent campaign. That said, an upturn in form in the past couple of months will leave a lot of fans hopeful that this year will come to be viewed as little more than an anomaly.

In truth, it is difficult to predict what the atmosphere will be like at St Mary’s at the weekend after the Saints were relegated from the top flight earlier this month. However, one senses that the home side will be wanting to give supporters something to cheer following their relegation. A win against a club of Liverpool’s status would certainly leave some feeling confident that their stay in the Championship will be brief.

What is for certain is that both sides will be looking to end the season on a high. Here is a list of the players Klopp will have to do without and one player who faces a fight to be fit ahead of the trip to the South Coast…

Calvin Ramsay

Liverpool supporters will not see full-back Calvin Ramsay before the end of this campaign, with the Scotsman having already been ruled out for the season after undergoing knee surgery. Klopp had this to say back in February: ‘It’s nothing. Obviously, missing the rest of the season is serious, but with Calvin, it’s really special.’

The full-back has since been pictured back doing some training, but the decision has been taken not to involve him.

Naby Keïta

It appears that Liverpool fans have seen the last of Naby Keïta in a red shirt, with the midfielder having not been seen in action since the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in April, having picked up a knock. He has failed to make the squad since then and so it is safe to presume that he will not feature against Southampton. He said his goodbyes at Anfield last week.

Thiago Alcântara

The Spanish midfielder will be ruled out for the trip to face Southampton this weekend after having undergone surgery on a recurring hip complaint. Klopp explained: “He will have the surgery and is out for the rest of the season.”

Time will tell what awaits Thiago next season, which will be the last of his current deal. Injuries have plagued his time with the Reds so far.

Stefan Bajčetić

The Liverpool academy graduate has been one of the club’s breakout stars this season but his promising start was cruelly curtailed back in March due to an adductor stress response injury. The youngster said this on the situation: ‘Unfortunately, I’ve picked up an injury that will keep me out until the end of the season.”

Like Ramsay, he will be back for pre-season, where he will hope to make a mark.

Darwin Núñez

And finally, Núñez faces a fight to face Southampton this weekend, with a troublesome ankle injury having meant that he was ruled out of the previous fixture versus Aston Villa. Klopp said the following last week: “It’s an inflammation of a tendon at the toe —very painful, obviously.”

One significant development is that the forward has been pictured in training over the past couple of days. It remains to be seen whether he is fit enough to at least make the bench to face the Saints. Given the dead-rubber nature of the game, he will not be rushed, so he has to be considered a doubt.
