With Liverpool sat proudly at the top of the Premier League table with the best defensive record of all 20 teams and having just qualified for another Carabao Cup final, Jurgen Klopp can feel rightly pleased with the job done so far.

The German presided over a fairly lacklustre 2022/23 campaign for the Reds, and when the likes of Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson et al moved on to pastures new last summer, there was a very real possibility that Klopp would struggle to get Liverpool back on their perch.

Any worries before the 2023/24 season started were quickly dispelled, however, and at this stage of the current campaign, Liverpool are absolutely the team to beat.

Despite this evident ‘re-birth,’ the manager and his backroom staff appear to still be looking ahead in order to ensure continuity of performance.

According to the Daily Mirror, one player that they have their eye on is Crystal Palace’s England international defender, Marc Guehi.

The outlet suggest that Guehi could be signed by the Reds as a longer-term replacement for Joel Matip, though there is a tacit acknowledgment that captain, Virgil van Dijk, is getting no younger.

The Eagles certainly won’t allow the player to move on the cheap, and in the current market it’s anyone’s guess what the asking price may be.

However, that’s unlikely to deter Liverpool, particularly if they end the season with at least one piece of silverware, thus presenting an attractive proposition to any prospective signing.

Liverpool and Chelsea will meet ONCE AGAIN in a final. This time fans will be hoping it’s not another goalless occasion.

The Reds booked their Wembley ticket by seeing past Fulham on Wednesday after Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea thrashed Championship side Middlesbrough in the second leg the day before.

Given that Liverpool are competing on all fronts this season – Premier League, League Cup final, FA Cup and the Europa League, then there needs to be a fair amount of rotation from Jurgen Klopp.

In Europe and the domestic cup matches, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has started in between the sticks instead of number one, Alisson Becker.

It was suggested by Craig Burley that the Republic of Ireland star will start the final against Chelsea and ‘the other ten will be the big guns’, as he told ESPN.

But Anfield legend Steve Nicol was pretty blunt in his response to that as he seemingly doesn’t want Caoimhin Kelleher to play.

The 25-year-old has faired well for Liverpool in between the sticks, including being a penalty hero against Chelsea, but Steve Nicol had a harsh response for the player.

Liverpool v Chelsea League Cup final
“Kellher will play in the final,” said Burley. “He will play in the final, I would imagine and the other ten will be the big guns.”

Nicol responded: “I hope not.”

Caoimhin Kelleher’s Liverpool future
Given the amount of games Liverpool are playing and will go on to play this season, it increases Kelleher’s game time.

But it also puts him in the shop window for the summer, with the Irishman attracting interest, including from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

You would imagine if he helps his team to a few trophies by the end of the campaign, then his stock will only rise.

Plus, many would argue that he is now too good to be sitting on Liverpool’s bench and acting as a number two.

Marco Silva makes honest Liverpool admission after ’emotional’ Fulham defeat
Liverpool will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in February after beating Fulham 3-2 on aggregate thanks to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Fulham boss Marco Silva admitted Liverpool deserved its place in the Carabao Cup final. That comes after his side’s narrow semi-final defeat.

The Reds will return to Wembley next month after a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage earned them a 3-2 win on aggregate. Luis Díaz’s early goal set them on their way after Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones had secured a 2-1 win at Anfield two weeks ago.

The tie wasn’t without its perils for Jürgen Klopp’s side though. Fulham had taken the lead on Merseyside, and threatened to take the game to extra-time in London after Issa Diop’s late goal sprung the game back into life.

It’s Liverpool though that will take on Chelsea once again for the first piece of domestic silverware this season at Wembley. And there were few complaints from Silva after the game.

“We have to be proud of the way we played in the games in this competition,” Silva told Sky Sports. “We know the quality of the opposition we faced.

“Overall it wasn’t our best performance at home, probably the emotion of the game and after conceding so early hard to settle. Overall I believe Liverpool played better than us but our commitment and attitude was always there.

“We tried until the end. After our goal it became a proper cup tie and emotional as well. We hit the woodwork but unfortunately didn’t score again and Liverpool go through to the final.

“We were not clinical, even the game away from home. In these types of games and these types of sides you have to be ruthless.

“We are always improving. Last season our Carabao Cup journey was not good at all. We have to grow and get used to these types of moments.”

Liverpool.com says: An honest assessment from Silva, and to be fair to Fulham, they have given Liverpool a tough time in all three meetings so far this season. Even when the second leg seemed to be meandering toward a conclusion, they managed to claw something back and make the Reds sweat a bit.

Perhaps on another occasion Fulham would have made Liverpool pay more, but the Reds did enough to book their place in the final and continue their superb form to start 2024. Silva’s side though showed Liverpool won’t have it all its own way as t hunts down four trophies this season, and with another trip to Craven Cottage still to come in the Premier League, the Reds can’t afford to let their standards slip even a bit.

A woman who lives with Parkinson’s disease has found a winning way to combat her condition.

Joy Paul, a radiographer at University Hospital Ayr, discovered an article in the media that claimed playing table tennis helped improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s.

And since taking up the sport, Joy has gone from strength to strength, culminating in her latest success.

She picked up two silver medals for women’s doubles and mixed doubles, and a bronze in the singles during the 2023 International Table Tennis Federation World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships, in Crete.

Joy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2008.

Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. There is no cure, although supportive treatments are available.

Sometime after being diagnosed, Joy came across an article which said there was scientific evidence that playing table tennis helps improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

And she’s never looked back.

Joy said: “The article went on to give information about the first Parkinson’s World Table Tennis Championships held in New York in 2019 and that the World Championships would be in Berlin and open to anyone with Parkinson’s.”

Being eager to find out more, Joy contacted a local coach and by complete coincidence, another woman with Parkinson’s disease had done the same and the new group quickly grew in numbers.

Joy has had great success since entering her first competition, the UK National Championships in August 2021, where she picked up a bronze medal.

She then travelled to Berlin for the World Championships soon after and made it to the quarter final stage.

Joy added: “Table tennis has given me a renewed lust for life and a hobby which I love.

“Before table tennis, I hadn’t told many people about my diagnosis. I didn’t attend any support groups for fear of seeing how bad I might get.

“Table tennis has changed everything. I now have many friends with Parkinson’s Disease and, as well as gaining a support group, I have given hope to some younger, newly diagnosed people that you can still work, move and compete 15 years after being diagnosed.”

SALAH CONFUSION: BACK INJURY OR HAMSTRING? DR PHIL BARTER CONFIRMS

Join AI Pro
UNDER PRESSURE PODCAST UNPACK SALAH’S HAMSTRING AND KONATÉ’S DEFENSIVE PROWESS
SALAH’S INJURY: A BLOW TO LIVERPOOL’S ATTACK
In today’s episode of the “Under Pressure” podcast, Dan Kennett highlighted the impact of Mohamed Salah’s hamstring injury on Liverpool’s attacking dynamics. Dr. Phil Barter pointed out, “It was clear from where he was sat down what he was holding that it was a hamstring injury.” The Egyptian star’s absence is more than just a player being sidelined; it’s a crucial piece of Liverpool’s intricate attacking puzzle being temporarily removed.

KONATÉ: RISING DEFENSIVE TITAN
On the defensive end, Ibrahima Konaté’s statistics have been a revelation. Kennett and Barter discussed Konaté’s impressive stats, noting, “In the Premier League, he averages the 2nd most progressive passes (10.86) out of centre-backs this season.” Konaté’s 84.56% accuracy rate for players averaging at least 10 passes per 90 minutes is not just a number. It is a testament to his growing influence in Liverpool’s backline.

LIVERPOOL’S ADAPTABILITY: A KEY TO SUCCESS
Hamzah Khalique-Loonat, a sports writer at The Times, emphasised Liverpool’s ability to adapt to player absences. The team’s versatility was evident in how they adjusted their lineup and tactics in Salah’s absence. Khalique-Loonat noted, “Liverpool played themselves into trouble from the first minute but also demonstrated their ability to adapt.”

IMPORTANCE OF PLAYER FITNESS AND RECOVERY
Dr. Barter, as a sports scientist, shed light on Salah’s recovery process. He stated, “He is in superhuman pristine condition, so he’s probably the best you can have to rehab with.” This focus on player fitness and recovery is a cornerstone of Liverpool’s strategy, ensuring that their key players return to the field in optimal condition.

LIVERPOOL’S FUTURE: BLEND OF TACTICAL INTELLIGENCE AND RESILIENCE
The podcast discussion, featuring insights from Kennett, Barter, and Khalique-Loonat, paints a picture of a Liverpool team that is not just about star players. It’s about a tactical system that adapts, players who step up in the absence of others, and a medical team that ensures quick and effective recoveries. As Liverpool continues their quest for glory, it’s clear that their strength lies not just in individual brilliance but in their collective intelligence and resilience.
