Sergio Aguero ‘lied throughout his Prem career’ as Man City team-mates fell victim
Sergio Aguero left Manchester City as a club legend, but he allegedly kept a secret from the media the whole time.

‘Attack on referee was inhumane’ – Turkish Football Federation president
Sergio Aguero became Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer and won five Premier League titles during his spell in England, but the former Argentina international possessed another skill that he was keeping well hidden. And according to Micah Richards, his ex-teammate “lied” for his whole time with the Sky Blues and “got away with it”.

Aguero scored 260 goals in 389 appearances for the Manchester club, including the most iconic moment in the club’s history when he famously clinched City’s first Premier League title in 44 years with an injury-time winner against Queen Park Rangers in 2012.

He left for Barcelona in 2021 with 12 pieces of silverware but rarely gave an interview to English media during his 10 years in the UK.

But according to former City teammate Richards, the reason for that was as simple one – Aguero simply pretended that he couldn’t speak English.

The Argentine’s cover was blown during the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast when host Gary Lineker mentioned that he had once interviewed Aguero in Spanish because he could not speak good English.

Sergio Aguero used to duck Premier League media duties by claiming that his English was poor. (Image: Getty)

Richards responded: “This is the thing Gary – Aguero was lying. When they were asking him to do interviews, he was saying ‘I don’t speak English’. But he spoke brilliant English.

“He knew exactly what the slang terms were, all the terminologies, and of course, speaking with your friends and having an interview is two entirely different things, but he just played on that so much.

“He got away with it. Muggins like me, James Milner, Joleon Lescott, all the English lads had to do the media because Kun just said he didn’t speak no English.”

Aguero’s language claim clearly worked as he hardly ever gave an interview to an English broadcaster and successfully duped Match of the Day host Lineker in conducting one in in his native Spanish tongue.

The 35-year-old’s stint at Barcelona was cut short after he was substituted during a home match against Alaves and taken to hospital with chest pains where he was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia.

A couple of months later he announced his retirement from football on the advice of doctors.

As a result, he missed out on participating in the 2022 World Cup but was in Qatar to see Argentina crowned champions for the first time since 1986 and could not resist getting in on the celebrations as he joined the first team squad on the pitch and broke protocol by holding the World Cup trophy aloft himself, even though he had not been part of the successful playing squad.

“Really tough for us now” – Klopp on Liverpool’s problem area which could derail title tilt
LIVERPOOL FC
Posted by Jason Pettigrove2 hours ago

Jurgen Klopp heads into Liverpool’s Boxing Day fixture at Burnley and their New Year’s Day game against Newcastle without a recognised left-back.

Andrew Robertson has been out for a while, but a nasty fall from Kostas Tsimikas which also put Klopp on his back, saw the player sustain a broken collarbone against Arsenal.

Though it isn’t clear how long the player will be out for, Klopp’s expectations are that it will be some time.

That’s presented the Reds with a defensive crisis of sorts, but the German isn’t dwelling on their stroke of bad luck, which could ultimately define their title aspirations if they’re unable to keep up their positive results over the next few weeks before Robertson returns.

“Can Joe (Gomez) play all the games now until I don’t know when? I don’t know, we’ll have to see,” Klopp was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“Robbo will be back (next month) and Kostas will be definitely out for a long while. I didn’t have time to think it through yet, but it is really tough for us now.

“You have injuries sometimes and you have to accept all of them, but a broken collarbone is really bad because it takes so long to heal.

“Robbo had a different injury, but it takes a long time to recover as well. We all know we need luck in these moments and now we have to just make sure we put Joey in cotton wool and make sure he is ready for the game.”

The injury to Tsimikas will see Liverpool prioritise a signing in that area according to Mirror, though any potential new hire will have to accept that as soon as Robertson is ready for action they will likely have to take a back seat.

It’s a conundrum for any player who may be first choice elsewhere but who could, potentially, be joining the next Premier League title winners – if Liverpool’s current form continues into the second half of the season.

Furthermore, Financial Fair Play will dictate that any new signing will have to be at a certain level, which would narrow the options some more.

Liverpool injury news ahead of games against Burnley and Newcastle United.

Injuries are starting to take their toll on Liverpool.

The Reds saw Kostas Tsimikas forced off with a broken collarbone in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal, meaning another player is on the treatment table for the long term. Certainly, if Jurgen Klopp’s side are to challenge for the Premier League title then they need as many players fit as possible.

Ahead of the clash against Burnley on Boxing Day, here’s the latest on the Liverpool injury front.

1. Luis Diaz – knee
Forced off against Arsenal but that was after a clash of knees and Klopp was not too concerned. Potential return game: Burnley, Tues 26 Dec

2. Alexis Mac Allister – cut
The midfielder was on the end of a nasty challenge in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United earlier this month and forced off in the second half. Mac Allister has missed been absent since and may not be available for the remainder of 2023. Potential return game: Newcastle (H), Mon 1 Jan

3. Diogo Jota – hamstring
The Portugal international went down against Man City with no-one around him before being subbed. Jota is back in training but Liverpool have been cautious. Klopp is unsure if Jota will feature against Burnley. Potential return game: Newcastle, Mon 1 Jan

4. Andy Robertson – shoulder
The left-back recently admitted that he has not set a target for when he wants to be back available. The new year has been the earmarked date. Potential return: January

Liverpool could sign “monster” £30m Thiago replacement
BY
ANGUS SINCLAIR
PUBLISHED 3 HOURS AGO
According to reorts, Jurgen Klopp could be interested in revisiting a move for this touted titan.

It would be fair to assume that now that Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed the fruits of his summer midfield rebuild at Liverpool, attention would be turned to other areas of the pitch – namely, the defence.

Yes, Joel Matip endured a crushing premature conclusion to his campaign (and potentially even his illustrious Anfield career) after suffering an ACL injury against Fulham earlier in December, with his contract set for expiry in June.

And while the backline will receive attention in the near future, the Reds manager appears to be eager to strengthen his engine room further with a top-class holding midfielder.

True, Alexis Mac Allister has done a fine job anchoring the midfield but he will feel that his creative attributes are better served in a No. 8 role.

Regardless, he’s been a competent – albeit divergent – replacement for Fabinho, who was sold to Al-Ittihad for £40m in the summer after a stark decline.

A replacement was lined up to no avail, but Klopp might just be considering a return for this touted summer target…

Liverpool transfer news – Andre
According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Liverpool could be in with a chance to sign Fluminense midfielder Andre after the Brasileiro Serie A club’s asking price of £30m has seen little positive movement from interested parties.

Arsenal and Fulham have also watched the player’s performances with fervour over the past several months, with the Cottagers in particular vying to secure his signature.

RELATED
Liverpool could sign a Saliba clone in star who’s “world-class material”
But with Fluminense now reportedly accepting the possibility of selling him next summer – midway through the Brazilian season – to fit the plans of European outfits, Liverpool could invest in the defence this winter with the knowledge that the dream defensive midfielder lies waiting at the end of the campaign.

Andre’s season in numbers
With Fluminense having played Manchester City in the Club World Cup final, Andre had a great opportunity to strut his stuff against Klopp’s rivals, revealing to reporter Ben Jacobs that “his dream is clear”.

He is, of course, addressing questions regarding his desire to make the interminable voyage across the North Atlantic Ocean toward English shores, where he could transfer the core qualities that have earned him such glittering acclaim in his homeland.

As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old has been an omnipresent machine in the centre of the park for his outfit this season, making 31 appearances in the Brazilian top-flight, completing 96% of his passes, making 6.9 ball recoveries per game and winning 70% of his dribbles and 60% of his ground duels. Evidently this is a progressive midfielder who also has a degree of no-nonsense pedigree to his game.

Hailed as a “leader” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his talismanic performances from the centre, the two-cap Brazil international also replicated his noteworthy efforts on the continental stage, with Flu conquering South America in the Copa Libertadores and defeating Argentinian giants Boca Junior in the final.

In this match, Andre won eight duels, completed 95% of his passes, made four tackles and succeeded with both of his attempted dribbles, crucial in gleaning gold.

Andre’s style of play
So it’s clear that Andre is a proficient distributor and it’s obvious that he’s only too happy to contribute to the match action with a well-placed challenge, but the truth is he has that prodigious vein of quality coursing under the surface that scant few players are bestowed with.

As per FBref, the Brazilian ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across divisions similar to the Brasileiro Serie A over the past year for pass completion and passes attempted, the top 25% for progressive carries and the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing his first-class ball-playing ability and robustness in the centre of the engine room.

Journalist Fernando Campos is among those dazzled by the South American’s skills, saying: “André Trindade is the best midfielder in the country and is a monster of a player.”

He is combative and industrious and appears to boast the modern skill set of a defensive midfielder who marries ball-playing skills with traditional dominance in the defensive duties, much like Liverpool’s very own Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago Alcantara’s Liverpool future
Liverpool signed Thiago from German giants Bayern Munich for around £25m in 2020, with Klopp opting to replace Gini Wijnaldum in the centre of the park with a different type of central star.

The 32-year-old has made 97 displays for the club and notably won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but injuries have been too often the narrative and he has not featured at all this season as he recovers from a long-term issue.

The maestro ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues for passes attempted, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 8% for successful take-ons, the top 11% for tackles and the top 5% for interceptions per 90.

Out of contact at the end of the season, Klopp and co will need to assess their options and work out who could be the perfect replacement, and surely, given the similarities in style, Andre could be the solution.

A distinguished and cultured veteran of the game, it’s staggering to think that Liverpool have been without his services all season, and just how integral Thiago could be as the Anfield side chase down the Premier League title over the coming months.

Described as an “orchestrator” by journalist and U23 scout Antonio Mango, Andre has the dexterity to serve as the string-puller, weaving and working his skill on the Liverpool midfield to strengthen and improve the squad.

There’s no telling whether Thiago will end his Merseyside journey at the end of the campaign, but for all of his genius, the silky Spaniard is simply too unreliable on the fitness front as he approaches his 33rd year.

Andre is the natural successor, emulating the passing prowess and tenacity in the tackle to ensure that Klopp obtains a tool capable of taking his revived Liverpool side to the next gear.

Liverpool and Man Utd sweating over suspensions as Chelsea suffer double punishment
Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal all have players at risk of picking up Premier League suspensions over the next few days.
By CHARLIE MALAM

Arteta gives verdict on Arsenal’s draw at Liverpool in Premier League
Several Premier League clubs will go into the 19th round of matches nervous about players being hit with suspensions. Players on four yellow cards are currently just one caution away from a one-game ban – but that rule is only in effect for the first half of the season.

TRENDING
That means after the 19th match is completed, any player who then picks up a fifth yellow will not be subjected to a ban. However, if they reach 10 bookings across the 38-game campaign, they will be hit with a two-game suspension.

The 2023-24 season’s 19th match-day begins tomorrow on Boxing Day, with five games across the day including Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United vs Luton, Bournemouth vs Fulham, Burnley vs Liverpool and Manchester United vs Aston Villa. There are then three games on the 27th (Chelsea vs Crystal Palace, Brentford vs Wolves, Everton vs Manchester City) and two on the 28th (Brighton vs Tottenham and Arsenal vs West Ham).

Liverpool and Man United are among those nervously hoping to avoid bookings. Wataru Endo is on four yellows after a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday and if he commits too many fouls against Burnley at Turf Moor, he will be ruled out of facing Newcastle on New Year’s Day (NYD).

That would be very bad news for Jurgen Klopp who is currently without first-choice No 6 Alexis Mac Allister as well as back-ups Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara. Darwin Nunez is also on four yellows and should start at Burnley. With Diogo Jota still sidelined, the Reds need the Uruguayan to avoid any bad challenges or dissent.

Raheem Sterling will miss Chelsea’s next match due to accruing five yellow cards (Image: GETTY)

Raheem Sterling was booked in Chelsea’s loss at Wolves on Christmas Eve (Image: GETTY)
Similarly, United will be asking Luke Shaw to keep it clean at home to Villa. While they have Sergio Reguilon in reserve should they need him to start at Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Eve (NYE), Shaw is one of their most influential players. Having him available for a tricky trip to Forest would aid Erik ten Hag in his bid to secure a morale-boosting result.

Liverpool and United are not the only clubs anxious. Arsenal have Ben White on four yellows ahead of the visit of West Ham to the Emirates. They take on Fulham at Craven Cottage in their next match after that on NYE.

Tottenham meanwhile have three – Cristian Romero, Pape Matar Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski – at risk of a ban when they face Everton. Spurs’ next match after that is also a NYE contest at home to Bournemouth.

It comes with Chelsea having been hit with a double punishment for their match against Crystal Palace on the 27th. Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer were carded at Wolves on Christmas Eve for simulation and kicking the ball away after a stop in play respectively.

Sterling was harshly booked with replays showing he clearly felt contact from a Wolves defender as he went down and his manager Mauricio Pochettino responded: “Yes for me Raheem’s was harsh but, of course, it’s a frustration.

“They are young and sometimes they get frustrated but now we are without two more players.” Enzo Fernandez is also on four bookings for Chelsea when they face Palace, meaning any caution would leave him unavailable for a testing 12.30pm kick-off away at Luton on NYE.

After Andre: Liverpool could be lining up first January transfer as Reds make Fluminense information request – report

Liverpool have reportedly requested information around Fluminense centre-back Nino ahead of the January transfer window.

This comes courtesy of Sportitalia journalist Alfredo Pudella on his personal website, with the journalist claiming that the Reds were joined by Fulham in conducting exploratory efforts.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will could be set to enter the market for a defender this winter as Kostas Tsimikas joined Joel Matip in the treatment room after sustaining a broken collarbone.

One to take with a pinch of salt
Whilst no disrespect is meant to Pudella, it’s hard to imagine Liverpool being seriously interested in the 26-year-old centre-half.

FBref have recorded some rather impressive statistics from the Brazilian, it has to be conceded, with the player registering in the 97th percentile for pass completion and 93rd percentile for progressive carries.

He’s a reasonable aerial presence too (79th percentile for aerials won), though we rather imagined that we’d be in for a younger defender capable of eventually succeeding Virgil van Dijk down the line.

Unless, of course, we’ve taken a liking to Nino’s progressive stats and ability on the ball and are imagining life with him filling in for our injured Cameroonian.

One to take with a  pinch of salt, for now, we suggest.

William Saliba Believes Liverpool Should Have Been Awarded Penalty
The Arsenal defender knows his side got away with one after further incompetence from the on field Premier League referees as well as VAR officials.

In a match between the top two sides in the Premier League, Arsenal and Liverpool, you’d hope the focus after the match would have been the quality of the product on the pitch. Sadly, most of the talking points yet again revolved around a potentially match-altering refereeing decision.

In the 20th minute, a touch off of the foot of Mohamed Salah was swatted down just inside the penalty box by Martin Odegaard to deny the Liverpool striker the opportunity to advance into the box with the ball. The on field referee, Chris Kavanagh, decided not to blow the whistle for the stone cold penalty. The perennially incompetent David Coote was the VAR official, and he further did not advise Kavanagh to have another look.

At half time, PGMOL released a statement to Sky Sports, stating that the penalty was not awarded because as the Arsenal midfielder’s foot slightly slips: “Odegaard’s arm is moving towards the body and not the ball as he goes down.”

The explanation is baffling, especially since Odegaard moves to the ball to stop it from going past.

After the match, Arsenal defender William Saliba was asked about the moment in the match. Saliba, to his credit, absolutely feels his side got away with one.

“Yeah, of course. It was a penalty but I’m not the ref and they have to accept it.”

Liverpool could have, and likely should have, gone on to win the match regardless of the refereeing. Still, it is galling to yet again have a furor over VAR for what should be a simple decision.

Sky pundit thinks many won’t have heard of ‘fantastic’ Liverpool player before this season

Jordan Harris
Sun 24 December 2023 17:45, UK
Clinton Morrison has named the ‘magnificent’ Liverpool player he believes many would not have heard of before this season.

The Reds go into Christmas second in the Premier League table following their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday. The result certainly whets the appetite for the rest of the campaign with neither Jurgen Klopp’s men nor the Gunners finding their best form yet.

One player who has been really impressive so far has been Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian joined the Reds in the summer after impressing with the likes of Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

Clinton Morrison names Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai as his signing of the season so far
Szoboszlai was arguably one of the best players in the Premier League in the opening weeks of the season. And while his form did dip more recently, the 23-year-old looks to be a brilliant addition to the Reds’ ranks.

Certainly, Clinton Morrison has been hugely impressed by Szoboszlai, telling Sky Sports News (broadcast on 24/12; 16:26) that he has been his signing of the season so far.

“Szoboszlai. Listen, mine was close, really close between two. I just put him ahead of Mohammed Kudus, who’s been outstanding at West Ham, I think he will be a superstar. But this guy has been magnificent,” he said.

“I can guarantee a lot of people didn’t know who he was before he came in, he was at RB Leipzig. But the goals he’s scored, fantastic. He’s going to be brilliant for Liverpool.”

Reds have a potential stalwart for the next 10 years
Perhaps Szoboszlai may not have been a household name before this season, but he was certainly a player a lot of clubs had their eye on.

Liverpool were the only team willing to pay Szoboszlai’s release clause. And that decision is looking like a masterstroke right now.

The Reds remain a work in progress. They arguably need to sign another holding midfielder at some stage. And Jurgen Klopp has probably got a few injury headaches.

But Szoboszlai looks to have every chance of being a star of the Liverpool side for the next decade.

Jurgen Klopp hints that £40m Liverpool player could soon return after ‘intense’ training session
Sun 24 December 2023 17:00
Dylan Walsh
Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Diogo Jota could soon return to Liverpool action having been involved in a recent training session.

The Portuguese international has been out for over a month after picking up an injury against Manchester City, though Jota is close to making a full recovery.

The £40m signing from Wolves missed this weekend’s clash against Arsenal, with Liverpool losing another player through injury on Saturday in the form of Kostas Tsimikas.

And speaking to the press, Klopp has indicated that Jota could now be back as early as Boxing Day to face Burnley, with the forward taking part in an intense training session.

“I don’t want to rule out anybody now. We will see. He didn’t train with the team yet and we have only one proper session, so it would be a surprise – but maybe I will be surprised and all fine.

“I don’t know. I saw him [on Friday]; he didn’t train with the team but the session I saw was really intense, but I didn’t ask yet who will be available. The medical department will tell me and then I will know more.”

Whilst Liverpool won’t be going into Christmas Day top of the Premier League, heading into 2024 sitting in first place is more than achievable for the Reds.

And Jota’s return could be huge in the Anfield side achieving this goal, with the Portuguese international one of the most clinical players in the Liverpool squad.

With Darwin Nunez yet to score in the Premier League since October, it could be a good time to bring Jota back into the fold to add more firepower to the frontline.

And Klopp’s comments strongly hint that Jota might be back in time for Boxing Day, a boost that would be huge for Liverpool.

Kostas Tsimikas leaves the field early vs Arsenal with shoulder injury

DARYL FINCH
Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a shoulder injury during Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash with Arsenal.

The Greece international was forced off the field in the 35th minute after a shoulder barge on the touchline by Bukayo Saka sent him flying off the pitch and into coach Jurgen Klopp.

In the process, the Greek landed awkwardly, visibly wincing in pain as he clutched his shoulder area.

The Liverpool medical team didn’t hesitate or attempt to treat the player on the pitch and he was immediately replaced by Joe Gomez.

SHORT OF OPTIONS
With Andrew Robertson already missing for the Reds, this latest injury could be a major blow for Liverpool at this very busy time of year.

Gomez, who replaced Tsimikas on the day, has played at left-back on many occasions, but it’s not his natural position.

Youngster Luke Chambers, a natural left-footer, is likely the next player in the pecking order for the role.

Tsimikas will be sent for tests following the game, the results of which will be eagerly anticipated by the Reds’ coaching staff.

Sources: Newcastle United terminate Joe White deal as Stockport County move agreed

Newcastle United are terminating midfielder Joe White’s Crewe Alexandra loan for him to join Stockport County for the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, sources have told Football Insider.

White, 21, joined Crewe on a six-month loan deal in the summer transfer window and the attacking midfielder has impressed for the Railwaymen.

League Two leaders Stockport have moved to agree a deal with Newcastle to take White on loan for the second half of the season.

We are delighted to confirm the loan signing of classy Newcastle United midfielder Joe White.

Welcome, Joe. 🤩https://t.co/B6wdXnJvAn

— Crewe Alexandra (@crewealexfc) August 31, 2023
View Tweet
He will link up with his new club as soon as the transfer window opens on 1st January.

The midfielder has made 20 appearances for Crewe so far this season, notching two goals and three assists.

He joined the Cheshire outfit on the penultimate day of the summer window but is now set for another EFL move.

White predominately plays as a central midfielder but can also play on both flanks and in more advanced central roles.

The former England Under-18 international has also had loan spells at Exeter and Hartlepool since making his senior breakthrough.

Despite featuring prominently for Newcastle at youth level, White is yet to make his first-team debut for the Magpies.

He signed a new three-year deal at St James’ Park last year (2022), keeping him on Tyneside until the summer of 2022.

White was named on the bench for Newcastle in Premier League games against Man United and Man City in the 2021-22 campaign.

He is one of several players, including Harrison Ashby and Kell Watts, to be loaned out by the Magpies to gain first-team experience this term.

Crewe sit fifth in League Two but are 12 points behind league leaders Stockport – who are poised to steal White away from their promotion rivals.

In a response to a viral video, the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed two constabularies, Jimoh Lukman and Kareem Fatai, for extorting money from a Dutch tourist.

The officers, caught on camera demanding bribes, were arrested, stripped of their uniforms, and publicly paraded on Thursday in Oyo State.

Briefing newsmen at the Oyo Police Command’s Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Adebola Hamzat, said the constabularies extorted a tourist from Netherland, Ms Noraly Schoenmaker.

Hamzat said that the incident happened on October 23 along Moniya-Iseyin road.

According to him, the dismissed constabularies deliberately defied numerous orders and directives against professional misconduct, extortion, incivilities to members of the public and corruption.
“We have always been warning you against extortion. We have been warning you that this administration has zero tolerance for corruption.
“That is the stand of the Inspector General of Police and my stand as the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State.
“You are very aware that we don’t condone corruption and don’t want the Command to be given a bad name,” he said.
Hamzat said the incident of extortion by the constabularies was captured on live streaming and was televised worldwide.
The CP said that the incident had brought international disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
“I want to tell you that the NPF have served in many parts of the world and have not been found wanting of extortion and corruption allegations,” he said.
The CP warned other officers to be satisfied with what they earn as salaries and not tarnish the image of the force by extorting money from motorists.
“I wish to inform the residents of Oyo State and by extension the public that Special Constabularies Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Lukmon have been dismissed in furtherance of the completion of their orderly room trials.
“This action is to serve as deterrence to other officers with a similar disposition,” Hamzat said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, described the report as false.

According to him, “This allegation is false and unfounded. It is purely an act of mischief and disinformation meant to sabotage the police’s unwavering commitment to rid Enugu State of unrepentant criminals. It is also aimed at pitting the police against the good people of the state in this yuletide.

“Consequently, the Enugu State Command urges all and sundry to disregard this manner of falsehood and disinformation while encouraging the accuser(s) to come forward with proof of such allegations for necessary disciplinary action.”

D’banj Cleared Of Rape, N-Power Fraud Allegations By Nigeria Police, ICPC

Nigerian artist, Dapo ‘D’banj’ Oyebanjo, has been absolved of allegations relating to rape and N-Power fraud by both the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Documents obtained by Punch on Friday revealed that both the police and the anti-graft agency concluded separate investigations, exonerating the artist.

An affidavit presented by Toheeb Lawal of Law Corridor, a law firm based in Abuja, before the District Court of Abuja, said the reports clearing the singer were submitted as exhibits A and B.

In 2020, D’banj was accused of rape, which eventually led the Inspector General of Police to order an investigation into the allegation.

The police report, dated November 14, 2023, with case number CR:3000/X/FHQ/ABJ/SEB/T.1/VOL 18/284, signed by ACP YY Abubakar of the Special Enquiry Bureau at the Force Criminal Investigations Department, said there were insufficient evidence to substantiate the claims made against D’banj.

It said, “The complainant, witnesses, and suspects made their statement. The investigation was extended to the Glee Hotel Lagos, where the staff on duty on the date of the alleged incident made their statement.

“The management and staff of the Glee Hotel averred that the first suspect was not seen in the hotel on the date of the alleged incident, nor was he given a spare key to gain access to any room in the hotel where the complainant lodged, and they have only one key to each room, which completely debunked the allegation of the complainant.

“The management of the hotel also held that it had no record to show that the complainant checked into the hotel as a guest on the alleged date, and she did not, at any time, raise an alarm, complain, or report any indecent assault or rape.”

It added, “There is no medical report on the victim to ascertain that she was raped. There are no adduced facts or corroborative evidence to substantiate the allegation of rape against the suspect. Prima facie offences of indecent assault, rape, and intimidation are not made out.

“However, the complainant, through her counsel, Ojoge, Omileye & Partners, submitted a later, dated July 17, 2020, to the DIG Force CID, to voluntarily withdraw the petition and discontinue the investigation.”

Meanwhile, the ICPC also affirmed that there was no evidence or basis to incriminate the singer regarding any fraudulent activities associated with the N-Power programme.

The clarification from the ICPC, dated November 29, 2023, and identified with document number ICPC/OPS/SDD/SPT.LG/31/23, stated, “The commission investigated issues of fraud in the administration of the N-POWER Scheme, where Mr Daniel Oladapo Oyebanjo’s name came up. However, there was no prima facie case of fraud against him.

“Kindly be advised that Mr Daniel Oladapo Oyebanjo is not under investigation with the Commission for any fraud-related offence,” the ICPC clearance partly read.
