Former Celtic youngster Ben Doak is continuing to rise down south.

The 17-year-old hot prospect is earning greater recognition with Liverpool, seemingly with every passing week. In the last seven days alone, Doak has made his first start for the Reds both away from home and at Anfield.

The latter came in his side’s 3-1 League Cup victory over Leicester City on Wednesday night. Doak played 65 minutes of the cup tie before being replaced by Darwin Nunez.

His performance formed the main portion of a post-match Liverpool Echo article. The analysis piece described the display as an “encouraging showing” in which he could have netted at least once.

Doak only made his Liverpool debut in the same competition one year ago. He is now viewed as a genuine option for Jurgen Klopp and has come a long way in the past year.

The Scotland youth international has seemed to impress whenever he has been given a chance by the experienced German. Yet, he suffers from having Mohamed Salah ahead of him in the pecking order.

Regardless, at 17, he is well ahead of schedule. You get the impression that he’ll be starting the majority of games for the Anfield club in the not-too-distant future.

Fresh off the back of an impressive midweek performance, Doak could have a part to play in the Premier League this weekend. Liverpool’s opponents are Ange Postecoglou‘s Tottenham Hotspur. The Aussie gave Doak his full Celtic debut in 2022.

With Salah fit and rested, Doak’s chances of starting the match seem unlikely. But he could still haunt his former boss from the bench. Postecoglou will certainly be more aware of Doak’s qualities than most Premier League managers.

The game is a 5:30pm kick-off on Saturday, live on Sky Sports. It could be an interesting watch.
