A former Liverpool player who left the club last summer is ‘annoying’ his new team’s hierarchy, vindicating Jurgen Klopp’s decision to get rid of him.

A slew of players departed Anfield last summer as the likes of Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and James Milner called time on their association with Liverpool.

Not to mention Naby Keita, who returned to Germany following the expiration of his Liverpool contract.

LOADING…

ADVERT

He joined the Premier League giants from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2017 for £48 million.

Keita left Merseyside last summer after making 129 appearances for the club.

He penned a deal at Werder Bremen but has only featured three times this season.

His limited game-time at Bremen could be due to his off-field attitude, according to a report in Germany.

ADVERT

Per DeichStube, Keita has failed to gain the trust of the club’s hierarchy due to his behaviour and punctuality.

He’s believed to have turned up late to team meetings and has also not attended sponsorships events.

Like his spell at Anfield, Keita has been plagued with injuries this season. But Bremen manager Ole Werner has still not picked the player despite him returning to fitness.

ADVERT

It’s also suggested that Werner is leaving the 28-year-old out in preparation for his imminent departure for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, with the Guinea midfielder set to represent his national team.

However, Bremen’s director of football Clemens Fritz referenced Keita’s fitness amid the reported off-field issues.

“For us in the last few weeks, the absolute priority was to get him fit and bring him to a good level,” he said. “That was successful.

“‘Naby is stable and certainly a candidate for action against Leipzig. But the coach will decide for how long.

ADVERT

“In training you can definitely see that he is getting better and better.”

Liverpool flop branded ‘the worst signing of the Jurgen Klopp era’ is now viewed as ‘untouchable’ at new club
Josh Lawless

A Liverpool flop who was described as “the worst signing of the Jurgen Klopp era” is experiencing a career revival at his new club.

The Reds offloaded a number of midfielders in the summer window, including the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But another departure in the same position was Arthur Melo, who quickly became a forgotten man at Anfield.

ADVERT
Melo, who played 72 times and won La Liga with Barcelona, joined on loan from Juventus last summer to give Jurgen Klopp another option in the middle of the park.

However, the 27-year-old ended up playing in just ONE game for the club – a 13-minute cameo in a 4-1 Champions League hammering at the hands of Napoli.

Image: Getty
A thigh injury which required surgery kept him sidelined for a lengthy period and Liverpool paid around £342,857 per touch during his time on Merseyside.

ADVERT
Paul Machin of the Redmen TV YouTube channel conceded that Melo was the worst addition Klopp made, telling GiveMeSport that “it can’t be classified as anything other than that”.

Melo, who maintained that he had a good relationship with Klopp, returned to Juventus once the season expired but has headed back on loan again, this time with UEFA Conference League finalists Fiorentina.

Image: Getty
And his resurgence is going well, having started all five of Fiorentina’s games so far in the new campaign.

ADVERT
La Viola are currently eighth in the league, with four points from a possible nine in Serie A. They’ve also progressed to the Conference League group stages thanks to an aggregate play-off win over Rapid Wien.

Melo has scored once in a draw with Lecce and as per The Sun, local media are calling him “untouchable” after a strong start.

Image: Getty
The ex Gremio man is confident that he has moved on from his injury problems, saying: “I am different than before, I am better. I learned a lot and feel in good shape both mentally and physically.

ADVERT
“At Fiorentina I want to win and learn, then we’ll see what happens.”

Liverpool flop sold by Jurgen Klopp last year is now smashing it at his new club

Jurgen Klopp may be regretting one transfer decision following the electric form of one former Liverpool flop.

The Reds had a busy summer transfer window, with several outgoings including James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

However, one player fans may have forgotten about is Japan international Takumi Minamino, who departed Anfield for around $18m (£15m/€17m) back in June 2022.

The 28-year-old initially moved to Liverpool in 2019, but struggled to establish himself as a regular first-team player under Klopp.

ADVERT
However, he has since rediscovered his very best form in France for Monaco.

The winger has five goals and four assists to his name in 13 Ligue 1 appearances, levelling his entire Premier League return at Liverpool.

Monaco sit third in the table, six points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, but manager Adi Hutter will hope Minamino’s prolific form can help rival Le Parisiens for the title.

ADVERT
Fortunately, Liverpool are managing well without him, and sit second in the Premier League table, two points behind Arsenal.

Speaking to TNT Sports about his time at Liverpool, Minamino said: “It was a great experience for me.

“We won the Premier League and two cups — the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. This for me was a very important experience as a football player, this is the most impressive memory.

“Anfield is one of the best stadiums in the world, this atmosphere and if you score as a Liverpool player it is amazing. I never forget that feeling.”

Moises Caicedo explains why he picked Chelsea over Liverpool

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has explained why he chose to move to Stamford Bridge instead of Liverpool.

During the summer transfer window, Caicedo was involved in a huge transfer saga with both Chelsea and Liverpool chasing his signature.

Despite Chelsea chasing the midfielder throughout the summer, it was Liverpool who managed to strike a deal with Brighton and Hove Albion, believed to be £110 million.

It was then reported that Caicedo was set to travel to Merseyside for a medical, but then things took a drastic turn.

ADVERT
It was claimed that Caicedo was having second thoughts about joining Liverpool as he had previously admitted he wanted to join Chelsea.

As a result, the Stamford Bridge club ended up paying £115 million to steal Caicedo from Liverpool.

As of now, it looks like Caicedo potentially made the wrong decision as Liverpool are currently basking in great form as they sit top of the Premier League.

ADVERT
Meanwhile, Chelsea are struggling to get going and are 12th.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Caicedo explained his decision to snub Liverpool for Chelsea.

He said: “I was talking with Chelsea for a long time. It was impossible to say not to Chelsea, because they were with me supporting me.

“In the summer I suffered a lot because it was complicated to leave Brighton. They were with me, and in the last moment Liverpool called me but it was [too] late because I wanted to play for Chelsea. It was tough to say no to Chelsea.”

This week, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp appeared to aim a cheeky dig at the Ecuador international.

During Liverpool’s Anfield test event, Klopp said: “We had a few strange things happen.

“Between us, my god were we lucky. We didn’t know that in the moment. Obviously we realised other central defensive midfielders didn’t want to join… then you see what happens!”

Fabrizio Romano names four Liverpool players who will leave the club this summer
Joe Adams

Published 17:25, 08 March 2023 GMT
| Last updated 17:27, 08 March 2023 GMT

Fabrizio Romano has named four Liverpool stars who could leave the club this summer.

Liverpool have endured a relatively inconsistent campaign as they’ve struggled to reach the heights of last season.

The club hit rock bottom after their humiliating 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League last month.

However, an extraordinary 7-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday has got them back on course, with the top four now firmly in their sights.

ADVERT
Braces from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez ensured all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side, as they kept their fifth consecutive clean sheet.

The win leaves Liverpool in fifth place, three points adrift of Tottenham above them, with a game in hand over the north London club.

Indeed, ensuring Champions League football will make Anfield a far more appealing prospect to players next season.

ADVERT
Four stars set to leave Liverpool
Klopp is expected to reinvest in the summer transfer window. However, in order to do so, some players are expected to leave Merseyside.

Roberto Firmino has already announced that he will depart at the end of the campaign.

The Brazilian came off the bench to score an emotional seventh goal against Manchester United – just days after he confirmed he would leave the club when his contract expires. However, he’s not the only one.

ADVERT
Fabrizio Romano reports that Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo could all leave Anfield this summer.

The Italian tweeted: “Not just Roberto Firmino. There are currently no talks between Liverpool and Naby Keita over new contract and he could be next one to leave on a free, together with Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“[Plus] Arthur Melo, also expected to leave; Liverpool are not planning to trigger the buy option.”

Keita has been the subject of interest from Barcelona, with the Spanish giants hoping to sign him as a free agent this summer.

ADVERT
Whilst Oxlade-Chamberlain is also likely to have a number of suitors.

Liverpool have now joined the race to sign ‘unbelievable’ Manchester City player in January

Lee Connor
Mon 18 December 2023 15:18, UK
Liverpool are looking for potential new signings in January and their search for new additions could lead them towards Kalvin Phillips.

The Manchester City midfielder is a wanted man in January. Phillips is expected to depart and has a number of clubs keen on bringing him in.

Fabrizio Romano has said that Phillips will be 100% be leaving, amid links to Arsenal. Meanwhile, Tottenham have also been credited with holding an interest in the England man.

However, in a twist in events, a report from Italy now claims that Liverpool have just put their name in the hat as well.

Liverpool move forward with bid for Kalvin Phillips
According to Calciomercato, in the last hours, Liverpool have put their name in the mix when it comes to the fight to sign Phillips.

The ‘unbelievable‘ midfielder, who City paid £45m for, is wanted by Juventus over in Italy and so reports on Phillips are rife right now.

It’s claimed that City would prefer to see Phillips move to the Turin club if they had a choice. But there is heavy interest from England, with Newcastle and now Liverpool wanting to sign Phillips.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Liverpool have been looking for a new defensive midfielder since the summer and in the end made the signing of Wataru Endo to plug the gap.

However, Phillips has long had admirers at Anfield and a bid from the Reds wouldn’t be a surprise.

Phillips surely won’t be allowed to move to Liverpool
Given the state of the title race right now, there is surely no way that Pep Guardiola sanctions a move for Phillips to join Liverpool.

While Pep has always done right by his players and allowed those who want to leave to move on if they wish, strengthening a direct rival is a completely different matter.

Phillips, of course, would surely relish a move to Anfield. He needs to be playing, and you can imagine he’d thrive under Jurgen Klopp with Szoboszlai and Mac Allister alongside.

But right now, City would be silly to authorise such a deal and it makes little sense.

Didi Hamann claims 24-year-old has become Liverpool’s very best midfield player now

Lucas Arnold
Mon 18 December 2023 11:45, UK
Liverpool legend Didi Hamann has now been assessing Jurgen Klopp’s midfield following a disappointing draw against Manchester United.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in yesterday’s drab affair was Liverpool’s inability to score against a particularly porous United side.

Photo by John Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images
And when he looked at Liverpool’s starting midfield three yesterday: Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, Hamann did think one crucial player was missing.

Klopp’s Liverpool midfield has a lot of exciting combinations this season, but Hammann was convinced that Alexis Mac Allister was the currently the best of the lot.

Missing through injury yesterday, Hamann really noticed the absence.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “Well I do like Endo, I saw a lot of him in Germany and he scored a good goal a couple of weeks ago, so I think he’s adapting to the pace of the Premier League now.

“Szoboszlai had a very good start to the season, he’s gone pretty quiet now and Gravenberch is a capable player.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“I think they missed Mac Allister, who is probably the best player in midfield so far.

“But I think the bigger issue is probably the form of Nunez since he scored those goals away to Newcastle where I thought he’s coming into his own now and he will be the striker that everybody expected him to be.

“I think he’s only scored one or two goals [since then] and his form is a bit of a worry I think.”

Didi Hamann thinks Alexis Mac Allister is Jurgen Klopp’s strongest Liverpool midfielder
Of course it’s particularly interesting to hear this point of view considering some of the criticism Mac Allister has endured this season.

Although clearly an exceptional footballer, many have not enjoyed the Argentinian playing as a defensive midfielder.

Many fans believe that Mac Allister would be much more effective deployed as a number eight, perhaps alongside Szoboszlai.

It would seem unlikely that Liverpool would target another addition in January, but perhaps an elite defensive midfielder is still on the future agenda.

Were Liverpool to add a Declan Rice or a Rodri to their side, they would surely be a shoe-in for the title.

That being said, Jose Mourinho has still tipped Liverpool to have an excellent chance of lifting the title this season.

Hamann is right in pointing out just how good a signing Mac Allister has been for Liverpool, and Klopp will surely want more of the same.

It’s quite remarkable to see a manager successfully revamp his whole team, one that had been so successful, but Klopp is getting it right yet again.

Alisson makes it clear who was to blame for Liverpool failing to beat Man Utd
Liverpool were left frustrated by Manchester United on Sunday, with the Reds failing to score for the first time in 35 games, much to keeper Alisson’s annoyance

Alisson has pointed the finger at Liverpool’s strikers for their side’s failure to defeat Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds were dominant at Anfield, enjoying 68 percent of the possession and having a massive 34 shots. But the hosts could not find a way past Andre Onana in the United net and dropped off top spot in the Premier League as a result.

While Alisson was forced into making two key saves, he was happy with how his side coped defensively. Instead, the Brazilian international believes that it was the Reds’ frontline which let them down against their bitter rivals.

“Unfortunately it’s a draw for us today, not what we were hoping for. But we have to take the good things that we did on the pitch. I think we dominated all the game, created a lot of chances, but still big areas to improve,” the keeper said.

“We take the good things from here this afternoon: the clean sheet I think was really good, really solid defensively, the way we defended, aggressive in the moments we needed to be, stopping counters, giving them [just] one or two chances.

“Maybe we could improve in the creation phase in the last third of the pitch, creating better chances for ourselves, being more calm on the ball and making better choices. Sometimes we rushed a little bit.

“Shooting balls that we could have passed to a player in a better position. But this is part of the game, we have to learn from that as quick as possible, as the season doesn’t give you too much time to improve.”

While Liverpool were unable to find a way through on Sunday, Alisson is confident his team-mates can rediscover their scoring touch. He admitted that the Reds could not always dominate the scoreline, but insisted there is room for improvement.

“They are massive for us, the strikers. They are always scoring. I think it’s a moment as well sometimes for the other players to try to score from set-pieces. The front three and the others who are coming in are doing the difference every game, one game after the other,” he added.

“Today, unfortunately, I think we didn’t give as well too many good chances for them. I think only Lucho had a really clear chance and even that chance wasn’t clear. We have as well to see the good things that the opponents did on the pitch.

“They made our work really hard today at the last third, the way they defended; they sat back and they worked hard. All the shots that we had [were] always with pressure so it was not easy.

“We take that, we take the point, we take the clean sheet and take the things we can improve and the things we did well. We know that in reality football is not always happening the big scores, scoring a lot of goals, scoring every chance that you create.”

MANCHESTER UNITED LEGEND PAUL SCHOLES EXPLAINS WHY LIVERPOOL’S MOHAMED SALAH IS ‘ANNOYING’

Mohamed Salah has already written his name into the legendary books of Liverpool, regardless of what he now does until his career finishes.

From helping Jurgen Klopp’s side win the European Cup to scoring a hat-trick at Old Trafford. Moments that will live long in the memory of Liverpool fans.

One record that Mohamed Salah holds is the most goals, as a Liverpool player, against the club’s bitter old rivals, Manchester United – 12 in 13 matches.

Paul Scholes stated that the £35 million signing, who was previously on Chelsea’s books, is ‘annoying’, but someone who simply can’t be stopped, as he told Premier League Productions (17/12/23 at 1:20 pm).

One of the most feared players in the Premier League and in Europe, it could be argued that the 31-year-old is the best player in England today.

His all-round game is better than Manchester City’s goal machine, Erling Haaland, with Kevin de Bruyne probably being the one to challenge him to that top label.

Mohamed Salah against Manchester United
“He is annoying for us,” said Scholes about Salah scoring more goals against Man United than any other Liverpool player in history.

“But he is brilliant, isn’t he?! You see his finishes there. As you mentioned, the big games. When the games matter, he is always there.

“The goals against Manchester City. The goals against Manchester United. All the big games.

“You always think ‘how could we stop him?’ A lot of his goals are very similar when he cuts in from that right-hand side. And you are thinking ‘how can it happen all the time?’ But he just has that much quality. You just can’t stop him. You know what’s coming, but can’t stop it.”

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United
Well, when Erik ten Hag’s side just seem to be in a dark place and fearing the worst, they manage to stop Liverpool from causing more damage.

Before a ball was kicked at Anfield on Sunday, many would have been captaining Salah in their FPL teams because he was going to deliver points galore.

But just like the rest of his Liverpool teammates, he was stopped, suffocated and prevented from scoring his 13th goal against Manchester United.

There is no doubt that the result suits ten Hag’s side more, especially given their recent results against the Merseyside club.

As for Liverpool, they missed the chance to go top of the Premier League table, with Arsenal now sitting top of the tree after beating Brighton.

Man Utd v Liverpool: Uefa charges both clubs after Old Trafford trouble
Last updated on18 March 201618 March 2016.

Stewards had to step in as trouble flared between fans at Old Trafford
Manchester United and Liverpool have been charged by Uefa following crowd trouble during the Europa League last-16 second leg at Old Trafford.

Rival fans were seen fighting in the stands, seats were thrown and flares were lit at Thursday’s 1-1 draw, during which five men were arrested.

Both clubs have been charged with crowd disturbances and throwing of objects.

Liverpool, who won 3-1 on aggregate, have been charged with illicit chants and the setting off of fireworks.

The case will be heard by Uefa’s control, ethics and disciplinary body on 19 May, the day after the Europa League final in Basel.

Radio 5 live commentary: “Uefa will take action, mark my words”
Greater Manchester Police superintendent Jim Liggett said the force was investigating a “handful of concerning incidents” after Thursday’s game.

Beforehand, police had to remove a banner on the M602 motorway in Salford designed to taunt Liverpool fans heading to Old Trafford.

United were not punished by Uefa after some of their fans sang offensive Hillsborough disaster chants during the first leg at Anfield.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are looking into a tweet sent from youth team player Jordan Williams’ verified Twitter account during the game.

The tweet depicted an aeroplane emoji and pair of hands clapping, in response to a video of Liverpool fans celebrating inside Old Trafford

Other Twitter users suggested Williams was mocking the 1958 Munich air disaster, in which eight United players died.

Williams, 20, deleted the tweet and later apologised, saying: “My Twitter has been hacked, I would never put anything like that to offend anyone, sorry about this.”

His account has since been deactivated.

Jamie Carragher doubles down on Liverpool league title prediction as Gary Neville agrees

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has reaffirmed his lack of belief that his old side can win the Premier League title this season.

Former Reds defender Carragher endured Sunday’s dull 0-0 draw with arch enemies Manchester United at a largely frustrated Anfield. The lacklustre contest marked the first time that Jurgen Klopp’s side have failed to score in a game since April, also bringing to an end their perfect record on home soil so far this term.

Post-match, a disappointed Carragher had seen nothing to change his mind that Klopp and co are ready to be crowned champions of England for the first time since 2020. “I think it’s like Liverpool are playing a season ahead of schedule, ahead of where they should be. How good is this Liverpool team?” Carragher asked on Sky Sports.

“I think the feeling was that they wanted to make it back into the Champions League for this season and then get back up there, but I think you can even speak to Arsenal supporters and wonder about their own team. They have that goalkeeping situation over there so it feels like there are questions around the top two right now.

“I don’t think Liverpool will win the league, not this year. I think they’ve had good luck so far, certainly had bad luck with the Tottenham game but they’ve also ridden on some lucky results so far. I’m not sure they can continue to do that.”

Gary Neville, who joined Carragher in the Sky studio after Liverpool’s goalless draw with United, agreed with and also tipped Arsenal to challenge reigning champions Manchester City. “I don’t think Liverpool can win the league,” United icon Neville declared.

“I had Arsenal at the start of the season and that’s only because I could see City having a little slip after the incredible treble-winning season they had last year. With Pep Guardiola, how many times does he only win one game in six in the league?

“It’s not complacency but I think there’s times where in the first part of the season, games might not feel as important as you want them to be. Come February, the Champions League knockout stage could come and they’ll hit the ground running.

“I think it’ll come down to injuries in the end – if Arsenal can keep their players fit, they’ve got an incredible chance to win it this year but you can’t rule City out, obviously.”

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool are straining under their “horrendous” schedule as the Reds lost Ryan Gravenberch to a hamstring injury in their goalless draw with Manchester United.

Dutch midfielder Gravenberch was arguably the Reds’ best player in his hour on the pitch on Sunday afternoon, with his direct running from midfield threatening to cause the visitors problems only for the hosts to be let down by a lack of calmness in front of goal.

The former Ajax star had been a target for United in the summer, but he showed his former manager Erik ten Hag what he was missing in a strong display before he pulled up and had to be replaced by compatriot Cody Gakpo.

Discussing Gravenberch’s injury after the match, Klopp said: “We will see. They told me directly after the game it got worse during the game, so that means it was not ‘bam’. He felt a little bit and didn’t show immediately. We hoped it would go by, [but] it didn’t. There was this really intense sprint with the ball which ended on the 18-yard line with a collision.

“I hope it is not that serious but we have in the next 10 days three more games, so I don’t know if he will be part of them or one of them. We will see, we have to make a scan.”

Gravenberch’s injury comes as Liverpool are missing Alexis Mac Allister to a blow sustained during the win at Sheffield United earlier this month, while Thiago Alcantara hasn’t yet kicked a ball this season and Stefan Bajcetic had only been seen fleetingly in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

Gravenberch is almost certain to miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham at Anfield, with the Reds then facing a crucial Premier League clash with Arsenal, who moved above them in the table on Sunday, next weekend.

“It’s a tough period. We play Wednesday against West Ham, they’re flying and playing really well at the moment, then we have Arsenal and Burnley. It’s horrendous,” said Klopp after the match.

Liverpool were left with plenty of regrets against Manchester United as the Reds failed to make possession count in a goalless draw, and their manager and captain looked to be the most frustrated of all.

The Reds had started well against United, forcing a succession of corners and testing Andre Onana through a header from Virgil van Dijk in the first half, but they were guilty of a lack of fluency at times and all often hesitated when it came to creating chances.

As the first half wore on Darwin Nunez was looking more and more erratic, at one stage holding onto the ball for a little too long before getting away a pass or a shot.

Shortly before the break a ball up to Nunez caught the Uruguayan offside when he should have been able to look along the line and judge his position, and Jurgen Klopp reacted to that by turning to his bench and shaking his head at what he’d just seen from the forward.

The Reds boss would have hoped his side would find some more clarity in front of goal in the second half, but it wasn’t to be as United impressed and even began to look threatening themselves on the break, with Alisson saving well from Rasmus Hojlund after a swift attack.

Liverpool were looking to keep their momentum up and keep progressing the ball forward, and Van Dijk was left furious with midfielder Wataru Endo when he chose to pass backwards after winning back possession in midfield. Van Dijk threw his hands to the air and cut a frustrated figure as what he saw as a chance to keep the pressure on get thrown away.

The Reds had become guilty of showing too much safety in their possession, and they came up against an impressive United defence marshalled by Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans, with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot strong in the full-back positions before Dalot’s late red card.

Klopp and Van Dijk will doubtless see this as two points dropped for the hosts, and there was a level of disappointment rarely seen at Anfield nine months on from last season’s 7-0 victory as the Reds failed to score for the first time this season.

Manchester United’s team bus was hit by a glass bottle as it arrived at Anfield ahead of their Premier League game against Liverpool on Sunday.

Video on social media shows a bottle being thrown from the street and hitting the front of the bus as it made its way towards the stadium.

It’s reported the bottle damaged a window on one of two buses carrying United players and staff.

“Liverpool Football Club utterly condemns the actions that led to damage being caused to the Manchester United team bus during its arrival at Anfield this afternoon,” the club said in a statement.

“We are aware of footage of the incident circulating online and are working with Merseyside Police, to fully investigate and identify those responsible.

“Any individuals found guilty of this reprehensible behaviour will also face the full force of the Club’s sanction process.”

Arteta hails ‘incredible’ Arsenal in 2-0 win over Brighton

Has Arteta worked out how to get the best from Havertz? (1:02)

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta hailed an “incredible performance” from his squad as they dismantled Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at home on Sunday to provisionally return to the summit of the Premier League table.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz sealed the three points for the north London side, who underlined their first-half dominance by denying Brighton a single shot on goal.

– Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Roberto De Zerbi’s side had scored in every single Premier League game this season but had no solutions against Arteta’s physical and free-flowing Arsenal.

“Incredible performance, a joy to watch from the start to the end, the way we did it against this very good team,” Arteta told BBC Sport.

“Even at half time the scoreline didn’t reflect that. We fully deserved to win the game. We had 15 shots [in the first half], it was a lot. We had to keep going, we don’t have that accuracy in front of goal.”

Arsenal’s win over Brighton was their 12th win in 17 Premier League games this season. Photo by Richard Heathcote/Getty Images
Brighton’s best chance came at 1-0 when Pascal Gross saw his shot fly wide of the post in the 82nd minute, and Arteta said that was the unpredictable nature of the Premier League.

“You see it in every game. We had many situations to put the ball in the net and we didn’t, 1-0 isn’t enough,” he said.

– Olley: Classy Arsenal end bad run vs. Brighton with dominant win

Arteta also had words of praise for Havertz, who has started to justify the £65 million ($82.4m) transfer fee Arsenal paid for his services, with the Germany international netting four goals in his last seven games.

When asked if he was finally putting in the performances expected of him, Arteta said: “In terms of goals, yes.

“In terms of performances, it’s exactly the same as he was at the start of the season. You can see he’s confident and enjoying his football.”

Liverpool missed out on moving back to the summit of the Premier League as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Manchester United at Anfield.

The Reds dominated the game but struggled to muster enough gilt-edged opportunities throughout the encounter. Despite having 27 shots on goal, Jurgen Klopp’s men lacked cutting edge and means they’re now a point behind Arsenal in the title race.

Liverpool were on front foot for much of the first half but struggled to create any clear-cut chances. In the 28th minute, United keeper was forced into his first save when he pushed Virgil van Dijk’s header over the crossbar. Eight minutes later, a Ryan Gravenberch volley that appeared to be on target was deflected wide for a corner – and Ibrahima Konate nodded above the bar when unmarked.

The Reds continued to be frustrated in the second period. Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the side netting two minutes after the restart before Mo Salah’s shot from outside the area was easily held by Onana. In the 66th minute, Liverpool must have thought they’d taken the lead when Alexander-Arnold latched onto Salah’s pass but his effort flashed just past the post with Onana rooted to his spot.

Moments later, Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker was finally forced into action as he kept out Rasmus Hojlund. The game started to become more of an open affair with Onana parrying a Salah effort to safety on 70 minutes.

With 14 minutes remaining, the Reds thought they were in with a shot for a penalty after Luis Diaz was brought down by Sofyan Amrabat after having a shot on goal, but the appeal wasn’t entertained by referee Michael Oliver. In stoppage-time, substitute Cody Gakpo missed a good chance to earn Liverpool a late winner. And while Diogo Dalot was sent off in the dying embers for a second yellow card, the Reds could not take advantage and had to share the spoils.

Here’s how we rated the Liverpool players.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been locked out of the inaugural Club World Cup after FIFA opted to restrict each country to two clubs unless they have won the Champions League in the last four years.

Chelsea and Manchester City have already booked their place in the new tournament to take place in the United States in 2025 by virtue of their recent Champions League victories, while Arsenal could also qualify if they win this season’s competition.

Liverpool have qualified on their basis of their overall Champions League performances if access was based entirely on merit, while United would also have been in contention, but at a FIFA Council meeting in Jeddah today it was decided to limit each country to two clubs in an attempt to broaden the competition.

An exception will be made for clubs who win the Champions League during the 2021 to 2024 qualifying period keeping Arsenal’s hopes alive if they lift the trophy for the first time in their history at Wembley next year.

In addition to the four Champions League winners eight places will be made available to the European clubs with the best performances in the competition over the last four years.

Missing out on the competition will be a significant financial blow to United and Liverpool as the prize fund has been projected at up to £50million depending on the value of international broadcast rights.

Real Madrid have already qualified with Chelsea and City as Champions League winners, whilst Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto and Benfica are all guaranteed places as their rankings cannot be overhauled.

There are four more slots available for European clubs via the ranking route, with Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Leipzig, Juventus, Napoli, Lazio and Red Bull Salzburg all in contention.
