Liverpool eye January swoop to sign South American star as Klopp continues overhaul – report

Liverpool

September 4, 2023

Liverpool are eyeing a January move for Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade as Jurgen Klopp continues to refresh his midfield, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds lost five senior midfielders last summer including former skipper Jordan Henderson and Brazil’s Fabinho – who moved to Saudi Arabia early last month. Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departed as free agents following the expiration of their contracts.

Klopp brought in four midfielders during the summer transfer window following the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

The Merseysiders missed out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who joined Chelsea in big-money moves despite Liverpool agreeing deals with Brighton and Southampton respectively.

It forced Liverpool to look elsewhere and Andre was on the club’s radar. The Brazil midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Anfield. The Premier League club had an initial bid worth £26m rejected by Fluminense, who were reluctant to sell him in the summer.

The Brazilian club insisted that Andre will not be offloaded in the middle of the season with the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A running across one calendar year.

“We are not going to deceive anyone, we have to make sales, but I can say that it will not be Andre,” the club president Mario Bittencour said.

“We are not going to sell Andre in the middle of the year.

“We even negotiated his renewal. Angioni, our director of football, is negotiating with his representatives. We have no proposals, no inquiries for any player. But the player who can be sold will not be Andre.”

Still interested

Despite Liverpool’s failure to get the deal done in the summer, the Reds remain interested in Andre. According to the Liverpool Echo, Thiago Alcantara’s imminent exit at the end of the season could see Klopp make a move for the South American as his possible replacement.

Alcantara has just one year left on his contract and as it stands, he will leave for free next summer, therefore, Liverpool are already planning to bring in a new midfielder to bolster their squad.

A transfer in January for the Brazil international looks more likely and the Reds could make another offer when the window re-opens. Andre is regarded as one of the best midfielders in Brazil and has helped Fluminense reach the quarter-finals of Copa Libertadores.

Jermaine Jenas notices ‘worrying’ Aston Villa trend in Liverpool defeat

Jermaine Jenas has raised concerns over Aston Villa’s defensive set-up against Liverpool.

Unai Emery’s team were swept aside 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday as goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, and an unfortunate own goal from Matty Cash wrapped up a comfortable three points for the Merseysiders.

The defeat is Villa’s second in four matches in the Premier League this season with the other loss coming in a heavy 5-1 defeat at Newcastle United in their opening fixture of the new campaign.

And former Tottenham midfielder Jenas has called Villa’s set-up “worrying” against Jurgen Klopp’s team. The Villans’ high line was also exposed against the Magpies as an apparent weakness continues to be exposed by top-level opposition.

“I think their game plan defensively today was quite worrying,” he said on Match of the Day 2.

“First and foremost mistakes like these and inviting pressure at Anfield, you’re asking for trouble when you start playing like this, you’ve got to be much more incisive.

“There’s certain things in football that never change. If you’re going to play the high line you have to have pressure on the ball. It’s just that’s set in stone in football because otherwise, you have players like Trent (Alexander-Arnold) who is one of the best passes in in the league.

“When they do press high at the pitch, it’s like they’re forcing the ball to the best passer of the ball on the pitch. You’re supposed to get like Matip or someone like that on the ball.

“It’s too easy because Villa are playing a high line and Liverpool are just picking just when they want to play the ball over the top and this is how simple it is. I mean, he could not have believed his luck, Trent

He must have just looked there and gone ‘hang on, you’re really gonna give me this kind of time.’ You have to pressure him, authorise or dictate the game. Unai Emery’s got some work to do.”

Serie A side holding firm in their €40m asking price for 23-year-old Liverpool target

Torino hold firm on their valuation of Liverpool target Perr Schuurs

Liverpool have received an update on the potential transfer of Perr Schuurs, with Torino reportedly standing firm on their valuation of the Dutch defender.

According to Tuttosport, via Football Italia [h/t ECHO], Torino recently received a €35m offer from Crystal Palace for Schuurs, but they remain resolute in their valuation of €40m.

The report also reveals that Liverpool’s latest bid for Schuurs falls slightly short of Torino’s asking price, with the offer being just over €30m. Torino’s intention is to use the proceeds from Schuurs’ sale to fund their own summer signings, which explains their determination to hold firm on their valuation.

For Liverpool, this news presents a challenge in their pursuit of Schuurs. While the defender has garnered interest from the club, they now face the task of either meeting Torino’s valuation or negotiating a compromise that satisfies both parties.

The club’s management will need to carefully assess their options and decide whether the 23-year-old is worth meeting Torino’s valuation or if they should explore alternative defensive targets.

It is not that the world ends at Schuurs or something along those lines. There are plenty of other centre-halves in the market as well. The only reason to say this is that the Reds might fall short of the homegrown quota, and getting on board someone like Levi Colwill, who might help us tackle both issues might end up being much more wiser in terms of transfer strategy.

Having said that, as the transfer window progresses, negotiations and discussions will likely continue between Liverpool and Torino.

Liverpool fans will be hopeful that the club can strike a deal that benefits all parties involved while adding depth and quality to their defensive ranks.

Torino’s firm stance on their valuation of Schuurs surely presents a challenge for Liverpool in their pursuit of the Dutch defender. However, the Reds have surely faced much more challenging times than the asking price of a transfer target, and we can sit back knowing that the people in charge will do what’s best for the club.

‘Quite fancies this’ – Liverpool fans will love reliable journo’s Levi Colwill update

Levi Colwill is now Liverpool’s ‘top’ transfer target this summer and the Anfield outfit have ‘belief’ that they can prize the Chelsea defender to Merseyside during the current window.

Jurgen Klopp has already strengthened his options in midfield this summer with the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and the Germans tactician now wants to add reinforcements in defence.

Colwill impressed while on loan at Brighton last term and was an integral part of Lee Carsley’s U21 England side that won the European Championships last week without conceding a single goal.

“Our understanding is that there is a bit of confidence here, Liverpool think they can get him out,” Bailey told 90min’s Talking Transfer Podcast (via Rousing The Kop). “Levi Colwill is ensured he can get a chance at Chelsea.

“Chelsea don’t want him to leave, but if players don’t commit their future they do sell. I think Colwill quite fancies this, there’s something in this.

“Liverpool are pushing quite hard for this, there is blood in the water and they really sense that. He is their top target now and there is a belief at Anfield that they could get him.”

Brighton were interested in making Colwill’s move to the Amex Stadium a permanent one but had a £30m offer rejected by Chelsea last month (The Guardian) and are yet to submit a second offer.

Mauricio Pochettino does not want to sell the 20-year-old who still has two years remaining on his current deal at Stamford Bridge.

The Southampton-born defender will be eager to play regularly again this term after impressing on the south coast and will have to decide whether Chelsea is the right place for him to continue his development.

The Blues will not want to sell to a rival like ourselves but we’ve seen already with Mason Mount this summer that if they receive the right offer they will bid farewell.

We think it’ll be difficult to get a deal over the line but if Bailey’s comments are to be believed then senior figures at Liverpool are growing in confidence.

Liverpool ‘leading the race’ for dynamic PL star this summer as Jurgen Klopp eyes third midfield signing – Football…

Liverpool are ‘leading the race’ for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia this summer, that’s according to a fresh report from Football Insider.

The 19-year-old impressed for the Saints last term despite their relegation from the Premier League and is therefore attracting interest from a number of sides in the top-flight.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already signed two new central midfielders this summer in the form of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but the Reds are believed to be preparing a move for ex-Manchester City man Lavia.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the dynamic star is on Liverpool’s list at the moment with Liverpool already bidding farewell to James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita this summer and the futures of both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho far from clear.

Southampton are holding out for as much money as possible for the teenager due to the fact Manchester City are owed 20% off any transfer fee after a clause was inserted in his contract last year when he moved to the south coast from the Sky Blues.

It’ll be interesting to see what further business we can complete during the remainder of the transfer window as we look to once again compete on all four fronts again next term.
