Julian Alvarez has won pretty much everything there is to win as a player, so much so that he doesn’t know exactly where all his medals are.
“Some are in Argentina and some are in the UK,” he says, although he does know where his World Cup winner’s medal is – locked away in a ‘special cabinet’ back in his home country. This is a player who is a world and continental champion for club and country, a treble winner and a teammate of the best players in the world. Alvarez has 13 major trophies at an average of one every 18 appearances for club and country.
But he still can’t hold down a regular position in the Manchester City team. For Argentina, he is the industrial number nine to allow Lionel Messi to shine as the world’s best number 10.

At City, he is second choice at both nine and 10 behind Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. Yet he scores goals wherever he plays, with 16 this season from 43 appearances along with a club-high of 13 assists. In total for City he averages a goal or assist every 107 minutes. Not bad for a back-up.

‘Almost impossible’ – Man City boss Pep Guardiola makes Real Madrid admission
This season only Phil Foden has played more games for City but that is as a result of De Bruyne and Haaland’s various injury troubles. When both are fit, Alvarez has dropped out to the bench. Despite his increased playing time this term, Alvarez wants to further establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s plans. He will do whatever he must for the team, but isn’t shy of declaring his ambitions to play more as the central striker.
“I played more this season – the first year I had to be more patient – I’ve played in different positions – as a nine or a 10. But I’m happy to be playing a lot more,” he said.

“I can adapt to both nine or 10 but I’d say I prefer playing as a nine. Players here need to be able to adapt to what the manager says – sometimes It can be a bit confusing, changing a lot. But you have to adapt.”
That feels like a diplomatic way of approaching the situation, especially when a goalscoring machine like Haaland is his competition. The Argentine didn’t entertain the talk earlier this year that he couldn’t play alongside the Norwegian, insisting the pair are always working on their partnership.
“It’s a pleasure to play with him always,” he added. “We have shown that we can play together and we give a lot to the team when we do play together.
“I’m used to playing with other strikers – ever since I was a child I’ve always shared the forward roles with other guys. But we have demonstrated that we can play together to help the team.”
His form, coupled with the incredible quality of De Bruyne and Haaland, has led to reports that Alvarez could leave in the summer to be the main man elsewhere, with Real Madrid and Juventus among the clubs linked. Alvarez doesn’t address those rumours directly but insists he is happy where he is at City, fully enjoying his football.
“I’m in the best team in the world, in the best league in the world, and with the best players around me,” he said. “That helps me to grow as a player and a person. I’m really happy here.”
It helps that Alvarez has ‘a part of Argentina’ in Manchester with him. His parents, brothers and girlfriend are all based in the city with him – his brothers were playing for local non-league side Abbey Hey when they arrived but are now looking for an opportunity elsewhere.

Alvarez likes to watch football in his spare time so is keeping a close eye on Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League title race and City have helped him adapt since moving from South America. When asked if he was happy for the Etihad Stadium announcer to use his ‘La Arana’ nickname, he responded positively, clarifying he wanted it announced in Spanish when he scored given the literal translation is ‘the Spider’.
He remains in contact with former City striker Sergio Aguero, who helped him when he signed for City shortly after Aguero left for Barcelona. “We talk a lot – maybe not as much as we used to because he’s outside of football,” Alvarez explains. “He’s doing a lot of streaming now. But we talk when we can.
“Before I moved here I asked him for advice yes – what to do in Manchester, how is the city. I used to watch him as a kid, the same as I watched Messi. He’s always been an example for me but especially now that I play for City.”
So with all those trophies and all those goals, what else is there for the 24-year-old to achieve? For Alvarez, it is simple. Win them all over again.
“There’s been a lot of trophies in a short amount of time. But I want to keep growing as a player and as a person,” he replies. “And why not win all the same titles again? It’s a lot of titles yes – but I want to keep doing it. I will keep training and I will keep working for the fans so we can get more pleasure out of winning.”

Karim Benzema has long been regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his generation, but just how many times in total has he found the net?
Karim Benzema has long been regarded as one of the most well-rounded forwards in the game and his recent Ballon d’Or win confirmed his status as one of the greatest of his generation.
He has been a constant presence for Real Madrid for over a decade, but he was not always been the dominant force at the Santiago Bernabeu as he spent a large chunk of his career in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Known for his exceptional work-rate, potent finishing and playmaking, the Frenchman sacrificed his own attacking returns for many seasons to be an amazing provider for the Portuguese star, who garnered all the media attention.
Article continues below
Following Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, Benzema’s rise has been a meteoric one. His reputation as one of the world’s best operators in European football grew multi-folds year after year, as did his goal-scoring output.
Now plying his trade in the Middle-East with reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad, and as they say, he is ageing like a fine wine and if anything he only seems to be getting better with age.
But just how many goals has he scored during his outrageous career at Lyon, Real Madrid, Al-Ittihad, and France?
Let’s take a look.

How many goals does Karim Benzema have for Al-Ittihad?
In a shock move, Benzema left Real Madrid in the summer of 2023 after 14 trophy-laden seasons at the Bernabeu, following in Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps and becoming the second global superstar to quit European football for Saudi Pro League adventure.
Al-Ittihad come off of an emphatic title win over Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and are considered the dominant force in Saudi Arabia. Add a five-time Champions League winner and current Ballon d’Or holder to the mix, as well as a sprinkling of other high-profile signings, they are the odds-on favourites to repeat their success from last season.

How many goals did Karim Benzema score for Real Madrid?
In 2009, Benzema joined Real Madrid for a transfer fee of €35 million, rising to €41 million based on add-ons.
However, he had a rough start at his new club as he scored just nine in 33 appearances in his debut season.
He eventually came good, though, and following Gareth Bale’s then-record transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, Bale, Benzema, and Cristiano Ronaldo forged one of Europe’s most fearsome attacking trios, dubbed the BBC.
However, the French star’s selfless contributions, work ethic, and ability to creating plays and spaces for others to exploit seemingly went unnoticed at times.
Now that Ronaldo has left the Santiago Bernabeu, however, Benzema is finally thriving more and getting the spotlight he deserves.
He is currently second on the all-time scoring list for Madrid and fourth on all-time UEFA Champions League charts, with former team-mate Ronaldo topping both podiums.

Karim Benzema Lyon 2008Getty Images
How many goals did Benzema get for Lyon
Benzema began his youth career with Bron before joining boyhood club Lyon in 1997. He progressed through the youth ranks and then made his first senior appearance for the French outfit in 2005.
He assisted Lyon’s second goal and subsequently went on to sign his first professional contract with the club.
Despite his tender years, Benzema earned a reputation for himself as a lethal finisher from within the box with either foot and his head, despite being typically right-footed.
Benzema recorded 66 goals in 148 competitive appearances for Lyon and later became one of France’s highest-paid players after renewing his contract in 2008.
During his time at Lyon, he earned himself the Ligue 1 top scorer, French Cup top scorer, several player of the month awards.

Benzema goals for France
It’s safe to say Benzema’s international career has been a turbulent one, full of controversy.
In 2006, before his international career even started, he spoke openly about his desire to play for the Algerian national team, the native country of both of his parents, but would play for France for only sporting reasons.
In 2015, Noel Le Graet, the president of the FFF, suspended the striker indefinitely from the national team after he was arrested by police for his alleged involvement in blackmailing fellow France international player Mathieu Valbuena.
He didn’t appear for France between 2016-2020 and this absence has tainted his CV. He was called back by Didier Deschamps in 2021
Since his return, he has been showing what France missed out on and he also helped them win a Nations League trophy.

Benzema goals in total for club and country
Benzema could have been forgiven for thinking his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or were dead and buried, with him now into his mid-thirties.
But the Real Madrid talisman lifted the prestigious trophy on October 17 following a spectacular 2021-22 season with his club as well as a comeback to international football with his country, France.
In fact, the Frenchman became the oldest winner of the award since 1956, when Englishman Stanley Matthews won the very first edition of Ballon d’Or at the veteran age of 41.
Benzema hasn’t had any long-term devastating injuries in his career, so there’s no reason to believe he doesn’t have several years left in the tank, and will be vying for his next Ballon d’Or.

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to have a busy summer transfer window as they will aim to improve Ange Postecoglou’s squad as a whole.
Spurs are expected to invest in all three areas of the pitch to give the Australian manager enough quality to push for major titles.
According to Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, the North London club will move quickly in the summer. They will look to complete their transfer business at the start of the window to ensure Postecoglou has the new players in his squad from the start of the pre-season.
Jones claimed: “We will see upgrades in all three areas of the field, and they will look to do that business early so that Postecoglou has them from the start of pre-season. There is not much judgement this season, but the expectation levels rise significantly next year.”
The former Celtic manager might not have lit up the world during his first season at Tottenham but he has surely impressed a lot of people. Spurs are growing as a team under him and his brave new approach has worked out more often than not.
