‘Unbelievable’… Shay Given says Manchester City man is the best player in the world in his position

Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals after being taken to penalties against Real Madrid on Wednesday night – but Shay Given still raved about one Man City player.

The two sides came into tonight’s second leg at The Etihad after drawing at The Bernabeu – with Josko Gvardiol, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva got their names on the score sheet against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Andriy Lunin won it for Madrid, stopping kicks from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic. It might not have got top penalties if Viniciur Jr had scored when through – only for Kyle Walker to get back and stop him.

Shay Given said about 33-year-old Walker, in extra time, as per BBC Live: “Unbelievable, you will not see a better full-back in world football. Kyle Walker showing his pace and power – brilliant defending.”

Rodrygo got the the first goal of the second leg, started by a brilliant first touch by Jude Bellingham – who played in Vinicius Jr and his low cross found Rodrygo, who tapped home in just the 12th minute.

There was only one more goal on the night, Kevin De Bruyne scoring to level the tie on 76 minutes. A battle of Real Madrid’s defensive quality, and Manchester City’s ability to unlock a very strong defence.

Real Madrid beat Manchester City on penalties to go through
City had numerous chances but Real looked quality on the counter. Chances missed by De Bruyne with the score at 1-1, and then Antonio Rudiger – saw the game finally reach a penalty shootout. City lost.

Andriy Lunin won it for Madrid, stopping kicks from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic. It might not have got top penalties if Viniciur Jr had scored when through – only for Kyle Walker to get back and stop him.

Madrid win, but Kyle Walker remains the world’s best right-back
For an explosive player, at 33, to last the entire 120 minutes against Ancelotti’s Madrid and coming up against Vinicius Jr – is incredible in itself. But, even then. showing the guile and fitness to get back.

It is no surprise that Walker was given a new contract until the summer of 2026 because even though he will turn 34 before the end of the season, he remains one of City’s best and most-important players.

It won’t be a Champions League medal draped around Walker’s neck this season, but there is every chance a Premier League and FA Cup one will be – and who knows, possibly a Euro 2024 medal as well.

Silva hails De Bruyne’s return for Manchester City’s clash with Real Madrid
Phil Foden may be stealing all the headlines, and rightly so, at Manchester City this season but Bernardo Silva has welcomed the return to fitness of fellow midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgium international is sat out the match at the Bernabeu due to illness having only recently returned from a long-term injury.

“When Kevin is present, everything is different because he is one of the best players of our generation,” Silva said. “When he is on a good day it’s difficult to stop him.”

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has joined Manchester City’s growing worldwide fan club.

Pablo Zabaleta claims his Argentina pal has followed the Blues’ recent rise and asks about them when they meet up on national duty.

Barca superstar Messi will surely have been impressed by the 6-0 destruction of Tottenham on Sunday which featured another scintillating display by Sergio Aguero – another Argentina star.

Aguero struck twice to take his tally for the season to 15 and is now the deadliest striker in Premier League history in terms of goals per minutes on the pitch.

Zabaleta revealed that Messi always tells him he joined City at the perfect moment in 2008 because Sheikh Mansour bought the club days later, paving the way for the arrival of top quality talent such as Aguero.

“I remember when we were in Barcelona, we were very close friends,” said Zabaleta. “We had known each other for a number of years – I was just starting out at Espanyol and Lionel was at Barca.

“When I signed for City, I think two days later the news broke that Sheikh Mansour had bought the club and Lionel always recalls that I joined at such a fantastic time.

“He asked me a lot about City, but I couldn’t tell him much because I didn’t know much myself. It’s something we often talk about, plus the fact that I’m still here.”

Spanish winger Jesus Navas, who cost City £14.9million from Seville in the summer, reckons Aguero will soon be classed alongside Messi as one of the world’s best players.

Navas said: “Sergio is among the best and right now he’s in really good shape. We all know about his capabilities.”

Aguero’s strike partner Alvaro Negredo also netted against Spurs and the pair have 25 goals between them.

And Navas believes Negredo and Aguero are fast becoming the Premier League’s most feared attacking duo.

He said: “They’re scoring very easily at the moment. The Premier League suits their style and that’s fantastic for us.

“I’m not surprised by Negredo because I already knew how good he was. He has always loved contact with defenders so this is the perfect league for him in my opinion.”

Navas registered his first two league strikes for City against Spurs, but says he will always be happy to be a goalmaker rather than a goaltaker.

“On a personal level, this was my best game for sure,” he said. “Scoring twice and also claiming an assist.

“I’ve always been known more for giving assists rather than scoring, but, of course, I enjoy scoring goals too. If I can score more here then that would be great.

“I like making other people happy. That’s why I’ve always been known for assists, but if I score more, then it helps.”

Aguero is Prem’s most proficient striker… ever!
It’s official – Sergio Aguero is now the most prolific striker in Premier League history.

Aguero joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has scored 45 goals in 5,379 minutes – one every 119.5 minutes.

While his total is still well behind that of Thierry Henry, who scored 175 league goals for Arsenal, Aguero is the most deadly of the players who have netted more than 40 Premier League goals.

Liverpool want to sign £60M Premier League star but he prefers Man Utd

Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace’s standout winger Michael Olise may hit a snag as reports indicate the player has a preference for Manchester United.

Despite Liverpool and Chelsea’s readiness to activate Olise’s £60 million release clause following his impressive performances, Olise’s lifelong support for Manchester United could tilt his decision in their favour.

Olise, who had previously rejected a move to Chelsea last summer despite a £35 million release clause being triggered, chose to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.

His decision to remain was quickly followed by a new contract that increased his release fee. His continued form this season, with nine goal contributions in just 12 appearances despite injuries, has made him a hot property in the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Liverpool continues to explore options to strengthen their squad, and Olise had been identified as a potential target to enhance their attacking lineup.

However, according to Football Transfers, with the player reportedly leaning towards Manchester United, Liverpool may need to reassess their transfer strategies.

In the January transfer window, journalist Ben Jacobs said to “keep an eye on” Olise to Liverpool but it doesn’t look a likely transfer now.

The situation around Olise emerges amidst Liverpool’s broader ambitions to refresh their forward options, especially considering uncertainties around other player movements and performance inconsistencies.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool may have to look beyond Olise to secure the necessary reinforcements to maintain their competitive edge.

Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro has admitted that Xabi Alonso could end up managing Real Madrid amid links with Liverpool.

Alonso was heavily linked with becoming the next Liverpool manager when Jurgen Klopp leaves at the end of the season. The former Reds midfielder recently guided Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, beating Bayern Munich in the process.

That success led to Alonso being linked with being Klopp’s successor at Anfield as well as replacing Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich. However, Alonso confirmed last month that he would be remaining in charge at Leverkusen beyond this season and would not be moving to Liverpool.

Carro has spoken about Alonso’s future, where he has also been linked with managing Real Madrid at some point in the future. The Leverkusen CEO has admitted that he believes Alonso will take charge a
