Champions League winger ‘rejected’ Newcastle move after serious summer interest – Report
August 23, 2023 Andrew Reynolds

According to Italian outlet Il Mattino, Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia rejected the chance to join Newcastle United after the club showed serious interest earlier in the window.

The exciting Georgian has been one of THE most exciting attackers in Europe over the past 18 months, with The Athletic, The Times and The Telegraph all reporting on our interest in the 22-year-old.

However, it was clear from the get go that attracting such a huge European star would’ve been an enormous challenge given the level of interest following his stunning season at Napoli.

The pricing of the deal would have also been an issue – it was previously reported that the Serie A champions were demanding upwards of £80m; a fee which may not have worked from an FFP perspective.

However, should we enjoy another successful season and give a good account of ourselves in the Champions League, he might just be one to watch if we reignite our interest next summer.

For now, the Georgian international looks to be staying on in Naples and it will be interesting to see if he keeps up his incredible form of last season where he recorded 25 goals and assists in the league.

As the end of the summer transfer window moves ever closer, Newcastle and many other clubs will be looking to get any remaining deals over the line.

The Magpies have strengthened again significantly during the break and that can only bode well for the future.

Given how well Eddie Howe’s side played for the vast majority of the 2022/23 campaign, that’s an ominous sign for their opponents, as is the way that the squad have begun the 2023/24 season.

They were only just beaten by reigning treble-winners Man City and absolutely tore apart Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

It’s true that it’s a long, hard season ahead, and also one where Newcastle will need to negotiate a Champions League campaign on top of their domestic schedule.

That might see Howe having to use the members of his squad wisely, because the last thing the manager will need is injuries to key players at important stages of the season.

Of course, with so many new players having joined room has had to be made, and one player that won’t be involved with the senior side this season because he’s sealed a loan move to St. Johnstone is Jay Turner-Cooke.

The youngster has been a member of the U21s and, according to Newcastle World, has regularly been training with the first-team, doing well in pre-season for them.

“Jay has been involved with the Newcastle first team in pre-season,” said St Johnstone manager Steven MacLean (h/t Newcastle World).

“He was in the squad against Rangers and got some game-time against Villareal. He’s got a really good pedigree and Newcastle have high hopes for him.

“He showed a real eagerness to come here. He’s hungry to come to Scotland and do well. Jay was with Tranmere for the second half of last season and played a dozen games or so, so he has a bit of first-team experience under his belt already.

“He is a box-to-box midfielder who can also play off the side as well, so he will add something to the squad. We’re happy to get him and hopefully he does well here.”

Kieran Trippier now shares what Hall told him on the pitch last time he played against Newcastle
Wed 23 August 2023 08:31

Lewis Hall is officially a Newcastle United player, and will now be getting to know his new teammates.

The deal was confirmed on Tuesday, with the 18-year-old arriving from Chelsea on loan. It will then become a permanent transfer next summer, with Newcastle set to pay £28million for the teenager.

While the move was only announced on Tuesday, it was actually Friday when Hall had his medical on Tyneside. He was then at the Etihad on Saturday to watch his new side lose 1-0 to Manchester City.

Now the move is official, and Hall can properly get to work with his new team as they prepare for this weekend’s game against Liverpool.

Following the deal’s announcement, Newcastle have now shared footage of Hall’s arrival on Tyneside, including a very interesting interaction with on-pitch captain Kieran Trippier.

Kieran Trippier remembers key detail about Lewis Hall and his family
During the video on Newcastle’s official YouTube channel, Hall can be seen going through his medical. He is joined by Trippier, who welcomes him to the club.

The 32-year-old then stated that they had met a couple of times playing against each other, and shared something Hall told him on the pitch about his family.

Trippier: “Your family are Geordies, right? Were you saying that when we played each other on the pitch last time?”

Hall: “Yeah they all support Newcastle.”

Newcastle fans through and through
Firstly, it is great to see Trippier introducing himself to the new lad and immediately welcoming him into the group.

Secondly, the fact that he remembered what Hall had told him when they previously met will surely have meant a lot to the left-back. They played against each other twice last season, with Hall featuring in both fixtures against the Magpies – including making his Premier League debut at St James’ Park.

It says a lot about Trippier’s personality that he remembers small details like that. That personable quality is what makes him so endearing and such a good leader.

For Hall, he will no doubt feel at ease alongside Trippier, while he is clearly immensely proud to join his family’s club at such an exciting time.

He will be eager to start playing alongside Trippier as soon as possible and get the chance to make his family even prouder than they already are.
