Jamie Carragher doesn’t subscribe to the theory that former Liverpool teammate Xabi Alonso is too inexperienced to be the club’s next manager.

Alonso, 42, is currently enjoying a dream start to his managerial career and has German side Bayer Leverkusen on course to become the first team to pip Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title since 2012. For the three previous seasons, the Spaniard was in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team as he learned his trade after a playing career spent working under some of football’s greatest ever managers.

Having guided Leverkusen to a statement 3-0 win at home to Bayern on Saturday, the clamour for him to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool has only increased, with Carragher among his biggest backers. One lingering concern is that Alonso lacks a wealth experience on his CV, but according to the ex-Reds defender, he’s still the “standout candidate.”

Liverpool handed huge Xabi Alonso boost as club chief makes “radical change” demand
“It’s still very early in his managerial career,” Carragher admitted on CBS Sports. “In an ideal world you’d say, ‘It’s Xabi Alonso but he’s had another job, he might have won a Champions League somewhere else, he’s won a league here’ and all these different things.

“But, I don’t see where he is right now, anyone that would be in front of him in terms of what Liverpool fans want or maybe the Liverpool board want. I don’t know what the Liverpool board want but he just feels like he is the standout candidate.”

In contrast, Alonso’s connection to Anfield, having played for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, is seen as a major positive by many. Again, though, Carragher doesn’t read too much into that fact either. “It’s not even just about playing for Liverpool,” he affirmed.

“I think if Xabi Alonso hadn’t played for Liverpool or there was another manager at Bayer Leverkusen doing the job that he’s doing now that has the CV he had as a player and had played for the managers he’s played for, he’d be in the running for the Liverpool job anyway.

“The fact that he’s a former player, and I’m not massive on a former player or someone who knows the club, it’s about getting the best guy to do the job. That’s just added onto the fact he’s doing a great job as a manager. He looks like he could go on to do great things.”

THREE SIGNINGS THAT RUBEN AMORIM COULD BRING TO LIVERPOOOL

Join AI Pro
RUBEN AMORIM TO LIVERPOOL: POTENTIAL SPORTING STARS TO FOLLOW
Following Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the Reds are currently in the market for a new head coach. Sporting’s Ruben Amorim is reportedly near the top of Liverpool’s priority list, alongside the likes of Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

We previously took a deeper look at three players that Alonso could bring with him to Anfield. But, today we’re going to explore the potential signings that Amorim could execute upon his arrival on Merseyside.

Liverpool have recently began to explore the Portuguese market more thoroughly, with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz arriving at the club. Could Amorim carry on some of the foundations laid down by former Sporting Director Julian Ward, during his time at the club?

GONCALO INACIO
Liverpool have been constantly linked with a move for Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio over recent transfer windows. The 22-year-old has become a pivotal part of Sporting’s back-line as they look to lift the league title once again.

Last summer, the Reds were tipped by many to make a move for the youngster but Inacio ultimately ended up signing a new deal at Sporting instead. With that being said, Inacio’s new deal at Sporting reportedly contains a release clause of approximately £50million.

Despite his young age, Inacio has already made 153 appearances for Sporting, scoring 12 goals and assisting a further eight. Many would suggest that a left-footed central defender would massively benefit Liverpool’s progressive style of play, especially from the back. Inacio would definitely fit the tactical bill and would the exact age profile that Liverpool would be looking to aquire.

PEDRO GONCALVES
The 25-year-old has become a crucial fixture in Ruben Amorim’s Sporting side as they take further strides towards the league title. Goncalves is most regularly deployed as a right-winger, but can also be effective on the opposite wing and even down the middle as a central option.

Since joining Sporting in 2020, the forward has made 171 appearances, scoring 70 goals and assisting a further 46 across all competitions. That averages out at nearly 0.8 goal contributions per 90 minutes, an incredibly impressive record over such a long period of time.

So far this season, Goncalves has 12 goals and 12 assists to his name in 32 appearances across all competitions. Transfermarkt currently value Goncalves at around £25million, but a summer move would likely cost upwards of the £30million region.

Photo: IMAGO
VIKTOR GYOKERES
Eyebrows were raised when Sporting signed Gyokeres from EFL Championship side Coventry City in the summer. However, the Swedish striker has become one of the hottest prospects in Europe since his summer arrival.

The 25-year-old has 27 goals and 11 assists in 29 appearances for Sporting, averaging roughly 1.07 goal contributions per 90 minutes. That puts him in the top 2% of strikers in Europe for goals and assists, as well as shot-creating actions, progressive carries, successful take-ons and key passes.

However, this move remains highly unlikely with Gyokeres having a £100million release clause in his current contract. With Liverpool already spending £84million on Darwin Nunez just 18 months ago, it’s hard to see the Reds splashing the cash on another striker option.

OVERALL VERDICT:
Whilst Gyokeres remains highly unlikely, Inacio is undoubtedly the most likely option to end up at Liverpool in the summer. With the Reds seemingly already laying the ground work for this move, the appointment of Amorim could only pull the final details of that deal together.

Goncalves would certainly be the underrated choice, especially with Mohamed Salah’s long-term future at the club still under scrutiny. It would definitely be interesting to see if Goncalves could make the switch to the Premier League.

Jose Enrique buzzing over news out of Liverpool earlier today

Liverpool gave their fans a nice boost on a grey Tuesday afternoon by sharing footage of Mohamed Salah back in training.

The Reds talisman has not played for Jurgen Klopp‘s side since New Year’s Day after suffering a hamstring injury in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Salah limped off just before half-time during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on January 18, and medical tests showed that he’d be out of action for a month

The Pharaohs exited the tournament at the last-16 stage in the Liverpool man’s absence, who was then able to focus fully on a rehabilitation programme at the AXA Training Centre.

Now, after missing eight Liverpool games through a combination of international duty and road to recovery, Salah has returned to the Reds training pitches.

Liverpool shared footage on social media – such as Instagram – of the £34million man leading the way and smiling as he went to retrieve the ball from one of the lines.

Mohamed Salah looks set to be involved in Liverpool’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brentford after making a return to team training on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old forward has been out of action since pulling up with a hamstring injury in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on January 18. He hasn’t featured for Liverpool since the 4-2 thrashing of Newcastle United at Anfield on New Year’s Day.

Now, though, after returning to team training on Tuesday, he could make his first Reds appearance in six weeks at the G-Tech Community Stadium on Saturday.

If all goes well between now and Saturday, Salah should be part of Liverpool’s travelling contingent that takes to West London over the weekend. Salah took part in team training at Kirkby on Tuesday and was involved in rondos at the AXA Training Centre.

Should he return, it would be a timely boost for the Reds, who face Chelsea at Wembley in the 2024 League Cup just eight days later.

Expected return date: Brentford (A), February 17

Trent Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold is set for a race against the clock to be fit for the League Cup final later this month after Jurgen Klopp confirmed the defender had suffered a recurrence of the knee injury he sustained against Arsenal last month.

On Monday, the ECHO reported that Alexander-Arnold was still awaiting the result of a scan in the aftermath of being withdrawn at half-time against Burnley on Saturday.

The No.66 was, as expected, not involved in team training at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Expected return date: Unknown

Dominik Szoboszlai
The Hungarian midfielder has missed Liverpool’s last two matches with an aggravation of the hamstring injury that sidelined him after the Reds’ 4-2 win over Newcastle on New Year’s Day. Now, the number 8 is in a race against time to be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on February 25.

Klopp said: “Dom is running outside at the moment, in the winter rain, and is not ready for tomorrow, of course not. Then we have to see. It’s like it always is with these tendon things; pretty quickly the player is pain-free, and then it’s all about… it’s muscle, [and] it’s pretty much the same that he had before.

“That’s obviously really not good that he got that again. He didn’t feel a great issue, but when you see then the pictures, you just have to take him out and now we are fighting for days, if you want. Is it Brentford, is it the [Carabao Cup] final or is it after the final? I don’t know in the moment.”

Expected return date: Unknown

Thiago Alcantara
Midfielder Thiago had only just returned to first-team action after a lengthy spell out, but alas, he has already been reunited with his close friends in Liverpool’s medical team after picking up a new muscle problem against Arsenal.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Klopp said: “Thiago, obviously, is not cool. Everything looked absolutely fantastic in training. It’s a muscle issue; we don’t know the extent yet. We have to wait there a little bit, but it’s not cool, of course. It was really not good news for him, for us, for everybody. On top of losing the game already and having that is not good.

“Yes, [I expect him to play again this season], but we didn’t really think about that, in the moment we just treat the injury and get a full assessment done and knowing exactly where it came from. It’s just the normal procedure and it would not be a big story if he wouldn’t have been out for that long a time. That’s how it is. It’s not a big, big injury, definitely not, but it’s obviously something nobody needed.”

Expected return date: Unknown.

Stefan Bajcetic
Stefan Bajcetic has endured a frustrating period in his fledgling Anfield career after a number of injury problems. He enjoyed a strong debut campaign last season but saw it end prematurely after suffering a stress response in his adductor in March.

Bajcetic returned in September with outings in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, but his involvement against LASK Linz proved to be his last after suffering a calf issue. It remains unclear when he will return to full training.

Expected return date: Unknown

Joel Matip
Joel Matip is recovering from surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 32-year-old, who is in the final months of his contract at Liverpool, is likely to miss the rest of the season. The centre-back was left stricken in the 70th minute of the dramatic Premier League 4-3 win over Fulham in December after an off-the-ball inciden

Expected return date: Unknown

Ben Doak
Ben Doak is out long-term with a serious knee injury sustained playing for the under-21s. Assistant manager Pep Lijnders said of Doak’s condition: “That’s not a good one. He tore his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery.

“That one will take (a) longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger, and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. We will wait for him.”

Expected return date: Unknown

Man City could face Champions League ban as Liverpool can leave UEFA with decision
Manchester City could be banned from the Champions League next season due to a loophole involving Girona, who are partly owned by the City Football Group.

Manchester City could be banned from the Champions League next season due to Girona’s success in La Liga. Girona, partly owned by City Football Group, has been a surprise hit in Spain this year, challenging for the La Liga title.

UEFA rules state that two clubs owned by the same group can’t compete in the same European competition, which could put both teams’ participation at risk.

If Girona qualifies for the Champions League and Arsenal and Liverpool finish above City in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions could be kicked out of the competition. The i reports that UEFA are keeping a close eye on the relationship between City and Girona.

It comes after the Spanish side announced they would be selling 19-year-old winger Savio to City following an impressive season under head coach Michel. If both clubs qualify for the Champions League, City Football Group might be forced to reduce their stake in Girona.

This situation is similar to what happened with Aston Villa and Brighton when they reached the same European competition as sister teams Vitoria de Guimaraes and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise respectively. Manchester United could face a similar issue due to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent purchase, as he also owns Ligue 1 side Nice.

UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body could scrutinize City’s involvement with Girona this summer if there’s a confirmed conflict of interest. Both clubs are at risk of losing their Champions League spots if no significant changes occur behind the scenes.

UEFA rules state one person or group can’t have major “control or influence” over more than one club competing in the same tournament. If an investigation agrees that individuals from City Football Group control both clubs and fail to tweak their business model, then only the team finishing higher in their domestic league will get the Champions League green light.

The other side would be obliged to battle it out in the Europa League. If by chance, Girona and City are equal in league position, the decision goes down to tape, and considering the coefficient, City might get ahead given their Champions League win last year.

However, if Girona overshadows the reigning Premier League champion, they’ll scoop up the Champions League place. Presently, Girona trails Real Madrid in second spot. City is hot on Liverpool’s heels, just two points shy of them with a match to spare, while Arsenal sits in third, currently level on points with City.

Liverpool.com says: Even with those rules in place, you just can’t see City getting kicked out of the Champions League, can you? Still, it does at least add another level of intrigue to the rest of the season, not that Liverpool needs any more incentive to finish ahead of its rival.

Report – Liverpool’s £50m-£60m offer will be accepted
February 13, 2024 Sahil 0 Comments newsnow
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Pedro Neto for quite some time and once again, the Portuguese international is in the lime light.

Back in October last year, reports indicated that the Reds are preparing to move in to lure the Seleccao playmaker from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

News – Liverpool move early, lead to agree signing of £98,000 a week boss – Report

Moreover, even last month, the 23-year-old star was linked with a move to Anfield.

According to a the latest update exclusively provided by Football Insider, a Liverpool offer worth £50m-£60m will be accepted by Wolves for Neto

The Merseysiders are looking for a long term replacement for Egyptian superstar, Mohamed Salah, and the former Braga attacker would be a quality signing.

Neto has missed eight Premier League games this term due to a hamstring injury but when fit, he has been in unstoppable form.

He is one of the fastest players in the top flight of English football and has consistently troubled the defenders with searing pace and dribbling.

So far, the 5-capped Portuguese has started 15 games in all competitions for Wolves and directly contributed in 13 goals (3 goals and 10 assists).

Salah has netted 18 goals and provided 9 assists this season but is currently out with a hamstring injury.

Have your say – Is Pedro Neto good enough to replace the best playmaker at Anfield? Should Liverpool bid £50m-£60m to secure his signing in the summer transfer window?

GUILLEM BALAGUE SHARES ‘SECRET’ ABOUT XABI ALONSO’S STANCE ON LIVERPOOL JOB

Olly Dawes
Tue 13 February 2024 19:00, UK
Updated Tue 13 February 2024 20:34, UK
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claims that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has had one eye on the Liverpool job for a while.

Liverpool fans were going through a quiet January transfer window and probably weren’t expecting much in the way of significant news.

Well, up stepped Jurgen Klopp to announce that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

Nobody saw this coming and Klopp will soon bring his time at Anfield to an end as he seeks a rest after more than eight years in the Reds dugout.

The attention remains firmly on the Premier League title race but Liverpool will also be eyeing up potential replacements for Klopp and one name keeps coming up…

Guillem Balague shares ‘secret’ on Xabi Alonso to Liverpool
Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the man in question having worked minor miracles since taking the job in 2022.

Leverkusen were at the wrong end of the Bundesliga table under Gerardo Seoane but now sit five points clear at the top of the table.

Saturday’s 3-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich showcased Leverkusen’s exceptional defence and their devastating attacking potential.

HITC Football understands that Alonso is the number one option inside Liverpool right now with Klopp heading out of the club.

Liverpool fans want Alonso and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher has already predicted that the Spaniard will replace Klopp.

A former Liverpool midfielder in his playing days, Alonso is the popular choice and it seems that he has long had an interest in the Anfield job.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has now told The Football News Show that there is a ‘secret’ plan in place between Alonso and his agent.

Balague claims that Alonso named Liverpool as one of three destinations he wanted if he succeeded at Leverkusen – Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Alonso played for all three clubs in his playing days and it’s clear that the emotional pull of returning to one of them – or even multiple over the course of his career.

“I’ll tell you a little secret,” said Balague. “When he went to Bayer Leverkusen, he told his agent ‘do you know what, I am thinking that if it doesn’t go well at Bayer Leverkusen, I’ll go back to Real Sociedad. But if it goes well, from here, it’s Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich.”

“Let me add Manchester City to the equation and that’s where Xabi Alonso could go next. When, is a different matter,” he added.

Hearing that Alonso has identified Liverpool as a potential destination is great news for the Reds, but it’s not all good.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel is under huge pressure and Real Madrid may see Alonso as the natural heir to Carlo Ancelotti.

Liverpool just have to hope that the timing works in their favour and that Alonso picks a move to Anfield at the end of the season.

LIVERPOOL FC TRANSFER RUMOURS
This is what Bruno Guimaraes said about a potential Liverpool move
Daryl Finch
DARYL FINCH
Amid reported interest from Liverpool and other top clubs across Europe, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has reaffirmed his commitment to his current side, Newcastle United, despite concerns over the club’s financial situation.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for a reported £40 million fee, has been instrumental in the club’s recent success, notably helping them to finish fourth in the Premier League last season and seal Champions League qualification after a two-decade hiatus.

In a bid to stave off interest from the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea, the Magpies tied down Guimaraes to a new five-year deal back in October.

However, it has since emerged that Newcastle may be forced to sell players to avoid breaching financial fair play rules. As a result, interest in the 26-year-old has been reignited.

IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL
Now, in light of persistent rumours linking him with a move away from St James’ Park, Guimaraes has made it clear that he intends to stay with Newcastle for the long haul.

After Newcastle’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday night, the Brazilian addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future in an interview with Sky Sports, saying: “Sometimes people speak a lot about me. I just speak a lot about football. I’m very happy here and I like how the fans think of me here.”

“I enjoy my time here. The fans have been unbelievable for me and my family. I hope this can keep going for a long time.”

The midfielder then left it in no doubt about where his focus remained: “Let the people speak. We have to get Europe again, try for Champions League. I know it’s difficult but definitely [we are aiming] for Europa League.”

Despite already strengthening their midfield with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo in the summer, Liverpool continue to be linked with a number of midfielders from around the round.

In Guimaraes, they would be getting themselves a player that is proven at the highest level. But whether admiration ultimately turns into concrete interest will hinge on who replaces Jurgen Klopp in the dugout this summer.

Manchester City are understood to have all but completed a deal taking Savio away from Girona this summer.

The Sky Blues have acted with the benefit of their multi-club partnership as part of the City Group, utilising a link to a fellow club asset.

Fabrizio Romano reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the 19-year-old attacker is closing in on a July switch with a ‘deal at signing stage now’.

The attacker has played a key part of Girona’s push for the La Liga title, registering 14 goal contributions in 28 games, with the club five points off Real Madrid at the summit.

A worrying sign for football
Whilst we’re not opposed to partnerships, per se, that benefit both player and club, this new trend of multi-club ownership is surely a worry for the sport.

Spare a thought for Ligue 2’s Troyes who have virtually been used as a pawn in the process without getting any of the benefit (Savio has not played an official competitive fixture).

Whilst officials close to the City Group will argue they’re playing within the current rules, this vision of football is perhaps not quite what the rest of us imagined or bargained for.

Liverpool, Romano

What’s the goal? Does this serve football’s best interests?

Never mind Manchester City… would it still prove as appealing if the likes of, say, the PIF were to start snapping up multiple clubs to feed Newcastle United’s growth?

Is this the future of football? Empires as opposed to individual states with their own footballing identities separate from the ambitions and whims of an iron fist.

It’s not one we signed up for!

How did this come about?
The 76-year-old had revealed the heartbreaking news in January of his fight with pancreatic cancer and his terminal diagnosis.

The head coach shared his adoration for Liverpool Football Club during recent interviews, along with his regret at having not managed the outfit.

Fan petitions followed online urging the club to get the Swede in the dugout for the upcoming legends clash. Jurgen Klopp even offered his colleague his office for the day to fulfil a lifelong wish.

We’re delighted that one of Eriksson’s greatest wishes will be granted in March.

‘Incredible’ Liverpool player spotted in full training kit today after being injured since September
Tue 13 February 2024 12:30

Liverpool look to have been dealt some good news on the injury front ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

The Reds had to make do without a number of first-team players at the weekend, struggling to overcome Burnley as a result. But overcome the Clarets they did, and they look set to be rewarded with some positive developments.

Both Joe Gomez and Alisson Becker missed Saturday’s match through illness. As per a video posted on Liverpool’s official X account today though, the defensive pair were back at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday. Good news.

There was further sightings for Liverpool fans to be happy with, as well. After being injured since September, it’s still unclear when young Stefan Bajcetic is expected to make a return.

View Tweet
However, after he was seen geared up in full training kit today, that could now be close. Having been spotted arriving earlier in the video, Bajcetic was then kitted up while playing darts in the canteen with Bobby Clark. Encouraging signs.

Bajcetic back involved
This of course is not a definitive sign that Bajcetic is back available for Jurgen Klopp, or even that he’s back in training at all.

After five months out, it may take the 19-year-old a little while to get up to speed even when he is back on the grass.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
But it is certainly a positive sign for a player who is said to have been getting frustrated with his rehabilitation. It’s been a long time without a game for Stefan.

In his absence it’s been easy to forget just how highly the teenager is rated at Anfield. Bajcetic has been earmarked for a really important role moving forwards.

This season, that has had to have been put completely on ice. With Liverpool’s midfield transforming, the former Celta Vigo talent looked set to play a big part in that. So far, that hasn’t happened.

Stefan Bajcetic

Nevertheless, Klopp has never forgotten about Bajcetic. The manager described him as being an ‘incredible’ talent in November and clearly has a plan for him.

Whether Bajcetic is able to take advantage of that plan before Klopp leaves in the summer remains to be seen. But he’ll certainly be a brilliant option for the new manager coming in.

With other issues in midfield at the moment, Bajcetic’s return would be a timely boost for the Reds as they navigate an important part of the season.

Let’s wait for further updates before getting too excited. This is great to see, though.

Liverpool get huge boost as 3 players return for first-team training
February 13, 2024
Joanna Durkan
After a couple of days off, the Liverpool squad were back at the training ground and they were boosted by the presence of three senior players after they missed Saturday’s match.

The win over Burnley saw Jurgen Klopp count his absences after illness, suspension, injury and bereavement all left him without several of his senior players.

Alisson and Joe Gomez were ruled out due to illness, while Conor Bradley remained in Northern Ireland following the sad passing of his father.

But on Tuesday, all three were spotted at the AXA Training Centre as the squad returned following a couple days off after their 3-1 victory at Anfield.

Klopp has been eager to stress that Bradley was under no pressure to return to Liverpool in any particular timeframe as he could have “as long as he needs with his family.”

The youngster has made his way back to Liverpool now, though, and will be involved in training with the rest of the available squad on Tuesday.

Whether that includes the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold (knee), Ryan Gravenberch (groin), Mohamed Salah (hamstring) and Dominik Szoboszlai (hamstring) remains to be seen.

However, Gravenberch was spotted in Liverpool’s social media post, though it is still uncertain if he is fit to be involved after feeling something in his groin during Saturday’s warm up.

Nevertheless, the sightings of Alisson, Gomez and Bradley is a welcome one after Liverpool’s list of absences started to grow once more after initially appearing to ease.

With four days to go until the Reds’ next match at Brentford, Klopp has plenty of time to prepare his squad and perhaps welcome back others – which we may get more news on later on Tuesday when the team train outside.
