Manchester City are edging closer to the start of the new Premier League season as Pep Guardiola goes in search of yet another title.

The Sky Blues continued their preparations for the upcoming campaign by defeating Manchester United in the Community Shield, recovering from going a goal down to win on penalties.

There has been change of late at the club following Julian Alvarez’s expected exit, which could prove to be a major loss in the coming months, though City will back themselves to fill the void left by the Argentine.

Ederson future claim

Ederson has pledged his commitment to City, insisting he plans to remain at the club for “more years” amid talk over his future.

The Brazilian has been a target for Saudi Pro League sides this summer, though appears to be set on remaining at the Etihad for the foreseeable.

Clarifying his stance after the Community Shield win, he told ESPN Brasil: “It’s over. I spoke with some players, the coach, director, everyone. I talked to my family and it was a joint decision. We’ll stay more years at City. The media says many things, sometimes inventing a little more. But I’ve already decided my future, especially after the conversation I had with Guardiola. This season, I’m totally focused at City with my team-mates in search of more titles.”

MEN Sport says: City fans will be delighted to hear these quotes from Guardiola’s No.1, who has played a key role in the club’s success of recent years. While Stefan Ortega could well have stepped up to become the new man between the sticks, it goes without saying that the City boss would have had no plans to lose the former Benfica shot-stopper.

Alvarez decision

Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul has been described as the “key man” in convincing Julian Alvarez to sign for the Spanish club.

Alvarez is expected to soon be confirmed as a new member of Diego Simeone’s side after City agreed a deal to offload the 2022 World Cup winner.

Plans were reportedly put in place by Atletico to convince Alvarez to make this move, starting at this summer’s Copa America. De Paul, who was part of the Argentina’s winning squad at the tournament, “insisted” that the 24-year-old should join him in Spain, as did fellow Atletico and Argentina international Nahuel Molina. It is stated this increased Alvarez’s desire to be involved in a “different project in which he would be important”.

Spanish outlet Diario AS add that Simeone’s son, Giuliano, also had a part to play at the Olympics Games – which Alvarez was also involved in – following “constant calls” made by his father to Alvarez during the tournament in France.

MEN Sport says: Such alleged behaviour by the Atletico players is fairly commonplace in football when it comes to attempting individuals to join a club, so this news should come as little surprise. That Alvarez wanted out of City remains a disappointment, though will lead to opportunities to younger players currently at the club. He is likely to be missed over the course of the campaign, though.
