This week, football fans were stunned to hear that Phil Foden had left Germany midway through the Euros 2024 tournament.

The FA confirmed in a statement that the 24-year-old midfielder from Stockport has flown back to the UK for a “pressing family matter” and The Mirror understands he is returning home for the birth of his third child with long-term girlfriend Rebecca Cooke The statement read: “Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter.”

Foden is hugely proud of his family and roots and putting them first ahead of football. The couple already share two children, Ronnie Foden, 5, and True Foden, 3, and recently shared wholesome photos of their baby shower ahead of the arrival of baby number three.

His son Ronnie recently said on social media that the family were expecting a new arrival. Ronnie, has become a star himself, regularly joining his dad on the pitch for trophy celebrations, posing for photos alongside Erling Haaland and sat on his dad’s shoulders.

Here, we take a look at the reason why Phil decided to tap out of the Euros, his family life, and his thoughts on fatherhood…

It is not yet known when Foden will return to Germany but the hope is that he will be back for Sunday’s last 16 and in the build-up to the game.

Foden, who plays his club football for Manchester City, had played for Gareth Southgate’s team against Slovenia on Tuesday. The forward is understood to have left the camp following Tuesday’s match in Cologne, where a goalless draw ensured England finished top of their group.

Southgate’s team aren’t back in action until Sunday, giving the midfielder to return in time for the round of 16 match in Gelsenkirchen. Their opponents for the round of 16 tie will be determined after the conclusion of Group E and Group F on Wednesday. Premier League player of the season Foden started all three of England’s group games. He played the full 90 minutes against Serbia, before being withdrawn in the latter stages of the draws against Denmark and Slovenia.

England will be keen to get him back when time allows because Foden has just enjoyed the best season of his life, winning a fourth consecutive title and being voted Premier League Player of the Year as well as the Football Writers’ Association award.

Earlier this year, proud parents Phil and Rebecca pulled out all the stops for their baby shower party, which featured a flurry of blue and white balloons and a huge LED sign that read ‘baby Foden’. Foden and Rebecca are childhood sweethearts, having their first baby when they were both just 18 years old.

Man City’s midfielder, Phil, reportedly first crossed paths with Rebecca at a teenage party in Stockport. Since then, she has been spotted cheering him on at numerous matches and mingling with England’s WAGs at major tournaments like the Euros and World Cup. Rebecca, believed to be around 24 and also hailing from Stockport, keeps a low profile and hasn’t revealed much about her career.

Fatherhood

On the other hand, Foden is known for his family-oriented nature and shared an endearing reaction to becoming a father for the first time.

He confessed to City’s website: “I was there for the birth. I walked out of the room, gave it a little tear, and then went back in like nothing happened. I’m not one for crying in front of people. I like to be on my own, but I was there in the room, watched it happen and it was a special moment. Your life changes. There’s no free time,” and added that he had “enjoyed every minute of it.”

He credited fatherhood with helping him stay “focused” and told Esquire, which featured him on its 2022 cover: “There’s so much going on out there for a young footballer like myself. The hardest thing is being in bed early and ready to train the next day when there’s all these distractions around. I think that’s where the dedication comes in.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola recently opened up about Foden becoming a dad again. At the time, he said he thinks being a father and settling down will help the player’s maturity on the pitch. Guardiola said: “I would love him to go in sixth gear in every single action but afterwards you are less precise, you lose the ball all the time and that is not effective.

“You have to reduce the time so you know the moments when you have to be more aggressive and calm. But it’s a question of time. He can improve a lot and has improved a lot from the beginning of the season and from the previous seasons. Maybe with the third kid that is coming for his family, that will help him.”

Welcome Back Legend: Jamaican Greatest sprinter Usain Bolt anounces His Return to sport after retirement as He widely considered to be the greatest sprinter of all Time…

KIPYEGON RETURNS TO PARIS AMONG CHAMPIONS

Faith Kipyegon will headline a sparkling array of world and European champions in action at the eighth Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season on July 7th, returning to the stadium where she broke the 5000m world record last year.

Kenyan star Kipyegon made history in 2023 as she became the first athlete to break more than one world record in a single Diamond League season. Her 5000m record of 14:05.20 was the second of three, and came just a week after she had broken the 1500m world record in Florence.

Kipyegon’s record was later broken by Gudaf Tsegay at the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene, yet the Kenyan still ended the season as Wanda Diamond League champion, claiming her fourth career Diamond Trophy in the 1500m.

She will launch her defence of that title in Paris this year, just a few weeks before targeting a third career Olympic gold in the same city.

The Meeting de Paris will be an Olympic dress rehearsal for many of the sport’s biggest names, with pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis and German long jump star Malaika Mihambo both already confirmed to compete at the Stade Charléty.

Kipyegon and Duplantis are among the six reigning world champions on the Paris entry lists, with Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Dominican Diamond League 400m champion Marileidy Paulino, Serbian long jumper Ivana Vuleta and Bahraini steeplechaser Winfried Yavi also set to compete.

Yavi, who broke an Asian record on her way to the Diamond League title in Eugene last year, will go up against Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech, who has held the steeplechase world record since she clocked 8:44.32 at the Monaco Diamond League back in 2018.

Six-time Diamond League champion Sandra Elkasevic (née Perkovic) will be one of several freshly crowned European champions as the Croatian discus star sets her sights on a record-equalling seventh title this year.

Ireland’s 1500m star Ciara Mageean, Polish 400m runner Natalia Kaczmarek and javelin Diamond League champion Jakub Vadlejch will also be hoping to take their European Championship form into the Olympics via the Meeting de Paris.

The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on 13th-14th September.

Caitlin Clark’s former teammate reveals ‘unrealistic’ expectations star faces
“I think people are really hard on her and expecting her to be perfect.”
Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin
Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark (22) and guard Kate Martin (20) take questions at Rocket Mortgage Arena, Thursday, April 4, 2024 in Cleveland.
ARTICLESWNBABy Jessica Kleinschmidt on June 25, 2024
The pressure to be Caitlin Clark is insurmountable. Well, to anyone but Caitlin Clark.

Nevertheless, there’s a lot put on the young, rising WNBA star, especially after such an illustrious college career.

Luckily, she has plenty of support around her. Including a former teammate who’s on a similar path.

“I don’t know if there’s too much I can do besides just be a friend, right?” Clark’s former Iowa teammate Kate Martin told FOX 5 Vegas. “Being a listening ear, being there for her and being there for everyone.”

Clark and Martin played together at Iowa for four years where they led the team to a national championship in 2024. The two remain close.

“I mean, Caitlin’s phenomenal, and she is having a great rookie season,” Martin said. “I think people are really hard on her and expecting her to be perfect. That’s unrealistic, right? She’s a phenomenal person. She’s a phenomenal player. I’m going to support her through everything, right? She’s one of my best friends. I’m just there for her.”

Martin also showed up to the 2024 WNBA Draft to support Clark only to hear her name announced with the 18th overall pick. The Indiana Fever drafted Clark first overall.

The duo battled it out this season when the Las Vegas Aces hosted the Fever in May. Martin’s squad won, 99-80, although she described the event as “weird,” but fun as they lived out their dreams.

Their former head coach, Lisa Bluder, was in attendance taking in the game in as well.

Damiris Dantas has been added to the Indiana Fever’s roster.

The Indiana Fever have activated the contract of veteran forward Damiris Dantas, the team announced on June 25.

In order to keep the roster at the maximum requirement of 12 players, Indiana waived rookie guard Celeste Taylor.

The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year at Ohio State last year and the 15th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, Taylor was the team’s second selection behind Caitlin Clark, who was chosen with the top pick. The Fever also drafted Leilani Correa out of Florida at No. 27 overall.

The Fever inked Dantas to a multi-year contract in February of 2024 (terms undisclosed). The 6-foot-3 forward promises to provide help for Clark and company both in the post and beyond the arc, as she’s a 34.1% shooter from beyond the arc over her nine seasons in the WNBA.

Fever Cutting Celeste Taylor Isn’t Much of a Surprise

The 5-foot-11 Taylor appeared in just five games for the Fever this season, averaging 0.6 points, 0.2 rebounds and 0.2 assists in 3.2 minutes of action per contest.

“They always say the easy part is getting drafted, the hardest part is staying. I want to be a player that stays in the league and not just one that makes it for one year or even for a training camp,” Taylor said after getting drafted in April, via Eleven Warriors.

“I think for me, (my focus is on) coming in and learning the business side, understanding everything that comes with it. It’ll be new for me, it’ll be new for everyone around me, trying to enjoy the moments and stay with it and stay with my faith and work hard,” she added.

A standout defender in college, she was won back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year titles in the ACC in 2022 and 2023. Taylor spent two years at the University of Texas before transferring to Duke, where she played for an additional years before using her final year of eligibility at Ohio State.

Over her five-year collegiate career, she averaged 10.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

What Might We Expect to See From Damiris Dantas?
The 31-year-old Dantas made her WNBA debut in 2014 and has since established herself as one of the best 3-point shooting bigs in the league.

She has been limited by a right knee injury in recent years, last playing for the Minnesota Lynx in 2022. Per the Indianapolis Star, the Brazilian-born Dantas missed the Fever’s training camp in May due to a visa issue coupled with a death in the family.

She’ll join an Indiana lineup featuring starting bigs Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith, along with reserves Temi Fagbenle and Katie Lou Samuelson.

The addition of Dantas to the roster should help Clark in multiple areas, as it’ll give Indiana another threat from downtown. Dantas should also give the Fever more physicality in the paint, which has been an issue for the team at times this season.

“Dantas gives us a WNBA veteran with experience in the post and her international experience in the Olympics will also benefit our team,” Fever general manager Lin Dunn said after signing her. “She will be a tremendous addition on both ends of the floor as well as in our locker room.”

Harry Kane says some underestimate just how good one Manchester City player actually is

Manchester City made history last term as they won the Premier League title for the fourth season in a row.

Pep Guardiola’s charges have won the title in six of the last seven seasons, with only Liverpool breaking that streak back in 2020.

One of Manchester City’s key players in this era has been John Stones, one of the most integral elements of the team over the past eight years.

Since joining the Citizens in 2016, the 30-year-old has made 257 appearances for Guardiola’s high-flying charges.

Stones has lifted all of those six Premier League titles, plus the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and numerous domestic clubs.

The former Everton and Barnsley ace is also a key player for England, with 75 caps and five major tournaments under his belt.

At times, it still doesn’t feel like Stones gets the credit his deserves, but now he has received some very high praise from one of the best strikers in the world.

Harry Kane says Manchester City’s John Stones is the toughest defender in England training
Bayern Munich striker and England captain Harry Kane has told the England YouTube channel that Stones is the toughest defender he has dealt with in international training.

The former Tottenham man also believes that some underestimate how good his Euro 2024 colleague actually is, and that “many strikers across many leagues” can vouch for him.

“I’ll probably say Stones, to be honest,” Kane said, when asked who he thinks is the toughest defensive opponent in the England training camp.

“I think Stones is really clever. Of course everyone knows how good he is on the ball, under pressure and playing.

“But maybe I think some people underestimate how good he is in reading the game and blocking shots, getting his body on the line, when to be aggressive, when to give space.

“I think he’s grown in that as he’s got more and more experience as well, he’s got better and better.

“Obviously I’ve known Stones a long time as well, but yeah, I’d say he’s the toughest one I play with, for sure.

“I’m sure many, many strikers across many leagues will attest to that.”

Just a few weeks ago, Jermaine Pennant claimed that Stones is not only a better defender than Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes, but a better player overall.

Stones will hope for England glory alongside Manchester City triumphs
Stones has won everything there is to win from an English club’s perspective, but a major international trophy has eluded the Three Lions for close to 60 years.

However, there are promising signs that England can finally put an end to their 58-year trophy drought.

The Three Lions reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and were just a penalty shootout away from winning Euro 2024.

Now, with arguably the strongest squad England have had in years, there’s certainly scope for them to go all the way this year.

NEWS382-appearance Manchester City star discusses international retirement fears ahead of crunch Euro clashPublished: 20:00 on June 24th 2024 | Last Updated: 19:04 on June 24th 2024By Harry Winters

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has discussed his future for the Belgium national team ahead of their final group stage fixture.

The 32-year-old is expected to captain Belgium during their final group game at the European Championship on Wednesday evening, with Domenico Tedesco’s side requiring a win over Ukraine in Stuttgart to secure a spot in the last-16 of the tournament.

Belgium bounced back from a surprise loss to Slovakia with a 2-0 win over Romania on Saturday, with De Bruyne securing the victory in the 80th minute with a crucial goal.

De Bruyne made his 103rd appearance and scored his 28th goal for Belgium in Cologne over the weekend, although the midfielder turns 33 this month, and could be competing in his final international tournament this summer.

The midfielder has been at Manchester City since 2015, and could embark on his 10th campaign with the Sky Blues in August, should De Bruyne remain at the Etihad Stadium for the 2024/25 campaign.

De Bruyne has been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia after the entering the final 12-months of current City contract, and making just 26 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side during the recent season.

The Belgian underwent surgery for a recurring hamstring problem in August, forcing the 32-year-old to miss the first six months of the campaign.

De Bruyne registered 24 direct goal involvements in 26 showings however, helping propel the Sky Blues to a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title, and De Bruyne’s 16th major trophy at the club.

The European Championship could be De Bruyne’s final international tournament, with the next FIFA World Cup taking place in 2026, and next Euro’s being held in 2028.

The 32-year-old has remained tight-lipped on his plans, saying: “I haven’t really thought about whether this is the end of my international career. I don’t like thinking about when I’m retiring or my future.

“I have not decided when I’m going to finish and I don’t know if this is my last one [Euros]. I’ve been playing in this team for 10 years and I have a lot of knowledge to pass on to the younger players but honestly, I have not decided when I’m going to finish.”

De Bruyne’s club future is also set to be discussed this summer, with the potential for Manchester City to offer the 32-year-old a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal top target Benjamin Sesko decided against a move to the Premier League this summer

Ange Postecoglou with the ITV punditry team ahead of England’s latest Euro 2024 match

Ange Postecoglou has suggested it was a ‘smart’ decision from Benjamin Sesko not to join Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal this summer.

The RB Leipzig forward was Arsenal’s top target, and his £55million release clause was deemed a good price. While Arsenal were understood to have been ready to trigger his release clause, Sesko agreed to a new contract on improved terms with the German outfit prior to the Euros.

After signing a new deal at Leipzig, Sesko said: “I had a good first year at RB Leipzig and am incredibly happy to be here. Team, club, city, fans – the overall package is simply outstanding for me. The early contract extension was therefore the logical next step for me.”

Mikel Arteta and Co were dealt a blow, and the search for a new striker continues. The Gunners have since been linked with a number of other attacking options, including Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Osimhen.

However, those alternatives may come with a higher fee, with Napoli demanding a £100m fee for Osimhen and Sporting valuing Gyokeres at upwards of £85m.

Sesko’s decision to remain in Germany is something that Postecoglou described as a ‘smart move’ as he continues to develop as a player. While on punditry duty on ITV, Postecoglou was asked about Sesko ahead of England’s final group match with Slovenia.

He said: “I think a big club would have looked at him this year, and it’s a smart move for him to stay there for another year. I think there’s still some development in him, but really good attributes for a striker position, for sure.”

Presenter Mark Pougatch then asked: “Is that the Tottenham manager saying it’s a smart move not to go to Arsenal?”

Postecoglou replied: “No comment,” to which Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Roy Keane, who were on pundit duty alongside the Tottenham boss, all burst out laughing.

Alan Shearer says ‘impressive’ Man City target has actually been the best player at Euro 2024
Tue 25 June 2024 13:30
Srinivas Sadhanand
Alan Shearer has made a huge claim about one reported Manchester City target.

It was claimed last Monday that City will only make a major summer signing if they sell one of their players but even so, they continue to be linked with big names in the transfer market.

It seems like transfer business for all clubs will accelerate only after Euro 2024 draws to a close. Manchester City’s potential outgoings will perhaps also be decided once the tournament comes to an end.

Alan Shearer makes big claim about Man City target Jamal Musiala
Pep Guardiola and Co. will be taking a close look at the standout performers at the European Championship.

City tend not to sign players solely due to the fact that they have shone at an international tournament. But if a player does, it is certainly impressive due to the pressure of representing one’s country and the difficulty of replicating one’s club form at such a prestigious competition.

MORE MAN CITY STORIES
Jamal Musiala is one player who has been linked with Manchester City — with a report stating this month that while they showed their interest in him, a transfer seems “too difficult to pull off.”

Now, Alan Shearer has claimed that City-linked Musiala, who has been making waves for Germany at Euro 2024 has been the tournament’s best player.

Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “[Jamal] Musiala was great, wasn’t he?”

“Been great. Certainly first two games anyway. Yeah, I would think him, Player of the Tournament up to now but what’s he had three games, wasn’t so good in the final game but first two games, he was impressive.”

Julian Nagelsmann provides Jamal Musiala blueprint to Man City
It is difficult to look past too many other players over Musiala as Euro 2024’s best player, as Shearer stated.

If Manchester City do end up signing Musiala, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has provided the tactical blueprint on how they should utilise him.

Considering Pep Guardiola does not often play Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden as a pair of attacking midfielders, he might refrain from doing the same in the 21-year-old’s case.

However, much like how Guardiola utilised Foden as an inside forward last season with Gvardiol holding the width as an advanced left-back, Nagelsmann has also deployed Musiala in a similar position — with Maximilian Mittelstadt tasked to stay high and wide.

If Kyle Walker and Josko Gvardiol were to be utilised as touchline-hugging full-backs, City could fit Musiala, Foden and Kevin De Bruyne in the same team — creating chances for Erling Haaland from central areas.

Whether Manchester City will be able to sign Musiala is a different story but as Shearer stated, he has been terrific at the European Championship so far.

Report: Man City and Real Madrid in Shocking £118M Swap Deal Talks

Manchester City’s Bold Move: Potential Swap Deal with Real Madrid
In a stunning turn of events, Manchester City are reportedly considering a sensational swap deal that would see Kevin De Bruyne and another key player move to Real Madrid, with a top-class forward arriving at the Etihad in exchange, report Team Talk. This potential blockbuster deal has the football world buzzing, with sources from Team Talk highlighting the key elements and implications of this proposed transfer.

De Bruyne himself has hinted at the possibility of leaving Europe altogether. Speaking about a potential move to Saudi Arabia earlier this month, he stated: “For Michele [his wife], an exotic adventure is okay. These are also conversations that we are increasingly having as a family. I still have one year left on my contract, so I have to think about what could happen. My eldest son is now eight years old and knows nothing but England. He also asks how long I will play for City. Once the moment comes, we will have to deal with it in a certain way.”

Julian Alvarez: A Rising Star
The other player reportedly involved in this swap deal is Julian Alvarez. The young Argentine striker has impressed since joining City and is considered one of the brightest prospects in world football. Letting Alvarez leave would be a significant gamble for City, given his potential and the role he is expected to play in the club’s future. Unless Alvarez himself requests a transfer, it is hard to imagine City parting ways with him.

The Real Madrid Perspective
From Real Madrid’s point of view, acquiring Kevin De Bruyne would be a massive coup. De Bruyne’s experience, creativity, and leadership would be invaluable to Los Blancos as they look to reclaim domestic and European glory. Julian Alvarez, with his youth and potential, would also be a strategic long-term investment.

However, parting with Rodrygo, who has been instrumental in Real Madrid’s recent successes, might be a tough decision. Rodrygo’s record of 54 goals and 41 assists has helped Madrid secure major trophies like the Champions League and La Liga. His potential departure would leave a significant void in the squad.

Conclusion
While this proposed swap deal between Manchester City and Real Madrid is still in the realm of speculation, it highlights the ambitious strategies both clubs are willing to consider to achieve their goals. City are keen to bolster their squad and maintain their dominance in the Premier League and Europe, while Real Madrid are always on the lookout for world-class talent to enhance their storied legacy.

As the transfer window progresses, fans will be eagerly watching to see if this audacious swap deal materialises. One thing is certain: the potential movement of Kevin De Bruyne, Julian Alvarez, and Rodrygo could reshape the landscape of European football.

We’ll take VAR’s word for it, but we have to admit the offside call to disallow Mo Salah’s cameo goal is rather dubious.

Screenshots of the incident shared online during Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Sparta Prague certainly indicate it was, at the very least, a particularly tight call.

Errrrrrr…. is that offside? pic.twitter.com/4e7siWRb41

— Empire of the Kop (@empireofthekop) March 7, 2024

We’re not quite sure if the VAR operators have based the lines on our Egyptian King or one of his teammates though.

He looks, in our view, to be just about onside.

Ah well. A 5-1 win it is in Prague, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s late effort!

5 talking points from Liverpool’s 5-1 win vs Sparta Prague
Alex Caple
ALEX CAPLE
Liverpool beat Sparta Prague 5-1 in the first leg of their Europa League Last 16 meeting. Here are five talking points from the game.

ONE RISK TOO MANY?
Jurgen Klopp didn’t take too many chances with his starting XI. No abundance of kids here in what was a very strong team, but also one that didn’t risk fitness.

Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai both started on the bench, with Conor Bradley and Virgil van Dijk also out of the XI for once. It was a team that offered plenty of hints for the plan against Manchester City.

The downside? Ibrahima Konaté went off early in the second half, bringing Van Dijk on earlier than planned. We’ll see how that affects things at the weekend, though the Frenchman did walk off.

DARWIN NOTCHES NO.1000
Darwin Nunez put on a show here. He only played 49 minutes but managed to score two fantastic goals that essentially killed the tie.

The first saw him compoase himself before sending a swirling shot over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The second was a first-time finish to send a bouncing ball into the far corner from distance.

Just two moments of magic from a player in fantastic form.

His first was also notable for being the 1000th Liverpool goal under Jurgen Klopp – a historic one, then. A no better player to score it than someone who is epitomising the German’s style of play right now.

KELLEHER INCREDIBLE ONCE AGAIN
Caoimhin Kelleher has one of the most difficult tasks going in living up to Alisson Becker. He’s somehow doing it.

The Irishman came into this one on the back of three clean sheets and was bitterly unlucky not to make it four. His first-half save was world-class, and he then provided another brilliant stop to tip a dipping ball over the bar.

Jurgen Klopp has long said he’s the best no.2 goalkeeper in football. He’s certainly playing like that right now.

MUCH-NEEDED RESULT
Liverpool have some enormous games coming up. The big win here just eliminated one of them – the Reds can go into the second leg next week with a four-goal headstart.

That should allow plenty of rest ahead of the FA Cup clash with Manchester United before the international break. And it means Klopp and co. won’t be worrying about that fixture during the big one this Sunday.

A positive game all-around, then – except for that Konaté injury.

ONTO THE MAN CITY GAME
Liverpool’s attention now turns to Manchester City and the biggest game of the season this Sunday. A win would leave the Reds as title favourites.

They very nearly set themselves up perfectly here. Darwin Nunez got 49 minutes, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mo Salah both got second-half minutes, and they were able to rotate well in midfield across the 90 minutes.

Of course, the Konaté injury (we’ll mention it one more time) is an issue. If it turns out to be nothing, then this was exactly what Liverpool needed going into Sunday.

Darwin Nunez is just an absolute pleasure to watch, isn’t he?

You’ve seen him hit some stunners, you’ve seen him miss sitters – but he never (NEVER) fails to entertain in the famous red shirt Liverpool.

Nor our white and green away shirt for 2023/24, with the Uruguayan doubling our lead in Prague with a superb long-range effort.

All that and in his 50th start for Jurgen Klopp’s men! How about that, eh?

Confirmed Liverpool lineup vs. Sparta Prague: Nunez starts, Salah on bench
March 7, 2024
Jack Lusby
There are three changes to Jurgen Klopp‘s starting lineup as Liverpool visit Sparta Prague in the Europa League, with Mohamed Salah back in the squad after injury.

The leaders of the Premier League and Czech First League meet in the Europa League this evening, with the Reds hoping to keep up their momentum with a valuable win.

Having been plagued with injuries in recent weeks, the situation is easing for Liverpool, though Klopp has named a rotated side at Stadion Letna.

Caoimhin Kelleher makes a seventh consecutive start in the ongoing absence of Alisson, with Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson making up the back four.

Wataru Endo starts as the No. 6, with Harvey Elliott and Alexis Mac Allister in the more advanced midfield roles.

And with Salah available again on the bench, Klopp fields a forward line of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Virgil van Dijk is among the more senior options in reserve and could replace Konate at half-time, with one eye on Sunday’s visit of Man City.

There could also be a debut for 20-year-old forward Mateusz Musialowski, who is named in a matchday squad for the first time.

Liverpool: Kelleher; Gomez, Quansah, Konate, Robertson; Endo, Elliott, Mac Allister; Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez

Substitutes: Adrian, Mrozek, Van Dijk, Bradley, Tsimikas, Szoboszlai, McConnell, Clark, Salah, Gordon, Koumas, Musialowski

Sparta Prague: Vindahl; Vitik, Krejci, Sorensen; Preciado, Kairinen, Solbakken, Zeleny; Birmancevic, Haraslin, Kuchta

Substitutes: Vorel, Surovcik, Olatunji, Karabec, Tuci, Sadilek, Mejdr, Laci, Vydra, Wiesner, Sevcik, Rynes
