LASK Linz coach Thomas Sageder has revealed his annoyance at Jurgen Klopp playing a weakened side against Toulouse on Thursday night, indicating it was weaker than that which faced the Austrians.

Liverpool lost 3-2 at Toulouse in the Europa League and while they remained top of their group, the French side’s win moved them to second.

The Reds beat LASK Linz 3-1 in September and despite the Austrians beating Union SG on Thursday night, Sageder is not pleased that the Liverpool boss played a weakened side in France.

Klopp’s criticism of LASK’s pitch when the two sides faced off earlier in the season in the Europa League did not make him happy as well.

Sageder admitted that he is losing his admiration for the Liverpool manager due to his complaints and tactics.

He stressed that his team will show what they think about Klopp and Liverpool when they visit Anfield later this month.

LASK Linz coach Sageder said on Sky Sport Austria (via Kicker): “What can I say? I am starting to dislike him.

“Now he’s putting out a squad there and he’s criticising the ground staff here.

“We have the opportunity to show what we think about it there.”

It remains to be seen whether Klopp responds to Sageder’s verbal volleys in the coming weeks, with the Europa League not the most pressing competition on the Liverpool manager’s desk.

How Anfield Road Stand looks with ALL seats now installed – with reopening update

The Anfield Road End looks markedly different to the eye as all the seats in the upper tier have now been installed, as work continues to get the full stand ready for 2024.

There has been one delay after another when it comes to the opening of the new stand, with the club announcing in early October that the upper tier would not be ready until 2024.

Fans with tickets to six different fixtures were left without, but the hope is that the same issues will not come into play following New Year, enabling Anfield to host a full-capacity crowd of 61,000.

Visually, you can see progression on the stand and the surrounding area with all the seats in the upper tier now installed, leaving only fans to fill them when the time comes.

Further cladding on the roof has been installed, while pavement on the exterior of the stand has been laid, in addition to the first tree planted in the surrounding area.

A sandstone wall between Stanley Park and the Anfield Road End is being built as we edge closer to seeing the final product, which will be a long-awaited sight.

It all moves the stand closer to completion, and there is speculation that the visit of Chelsea in the Premier League on January 31 will be the first with some fans in upper tier.

A test event will be required to obtain a safety certificate from Liverpool City Council before the upper tier can be full of supporters during a competitive fixture, which Liverpool expect to take place before the end of the year.

The members’ sale for the second-half of the season is likely to bring more information on Liverpool’s expectations and timeline later this month, with a “phased” opening still very much the plan.

Currently, only the lower tier of the stand is open and some may have noticed there is still work to be done in the bottom-left corner (as you view it from the Kop), and that is not expected to be complete until next summer.

Anfield has been operating with a reduced capacity of around 49,000 to start the season, and estimations are that the club are losing in the region of £750,000 per match with the ground in its current state.

The initial target date for the full opening of the new stand was the first home game of the season, but plans were torn up when contractor, Buckingham Group, filed for administration.

Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool: Last-gasp Quansah goal ruled out in shock defeat

Jarell Quansah saw what would have been his first Liverpool goal ruled out.

Academy graduate Jarell Quansah was denied a dream first goal in stoppage time as Liverpool slipped to a shock 3-2 defeat at Toulouse.

The 20-year-old, replacing ill captain Virgil van Dijk in the side, poked home in the seventh additional minute to claim what would have been a barely-deserved point in southern France.

However, VAR alerted referee Georgi Kabakov to a potential handball after the ball bounced up off Alexis Mac Allister’s chest in the build-up and the Georgian official contentiously chalked it off.

Even a draw would have hardly papered over the individual errors and a lack of cohesion throughout a team registering nine changes.

Toulouse, who had won only three matches prior to this game, had been thrashed 5-1 at Anfield a fortnight ago but were an entirely different prospect on home turf, although they benefited from some shambolic defending.

Liverpool still top the group but their advantage has been cut to just two points and although they have the two weakest sides still to play Klopp’s 450th game in charge was not one to remember as they slipped to their first European defeat this season.

The only cause for celebration on the night came a couple of hours before kick-off when news came through from Colombia that Luis Diaz’s father had been released from his 12-day kidnap ordeal.

But even that could not ease the pain of Kostas Tsimikas dawdling in possession for Toulouse’s psychologically important first goal, or how easily the visitors conceded two more in the second half.

It even took an own goal from Cristian Casseres to get them back into the game at 2-1, only for them to concede again less than three minutes later and it was not until the 89th minute that substitute Diogo Jota set up the late drama.

On the back of the Diaz news the game began brightly for Liverpool with Joe Gomez, who has never scored for Liverpool in 188 games, flicking a Cody Gakpo cross onto the bar.

Diaz turned Mikkel Desler inside out twice to win a free-kick before his knockdown of Gomez’s cross saw Mac Allister’s volley deflected over, with goalkeeper Guillaume Restes’ parrying Ben Doak’s shot.

Toulouse gave Liverpool a warning they did not heed when Gabriel Suazo slid in at the far post to deflect Niklas Schmidt’s cross wide.

Seven minutes later Tsimikas was sloppy in possession and robbed by Donnum, who raced into the penalty area to beat Caoimhin Kelleher via a deflection off Quansah’s leg.

Midfielder Wataru Endo, who had already been booked, was lucky to escape with a lunge on Casseres but he was not so fortunate in surviving the half-time cull – and neither was Tsimikas.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold were their replacements, with the unfortunate Doak making way for Mohamed Salah.

Jurgen Klopp’s team missed out on the chance to confirm their place in the knockout stage

Toulouse immediately exposed the space behind Alexander-Arnold, as Gomez had switched to left-back, with Suazo breaking forward and cutting inside Quansah before rolling a shot wide of the far post.

Thijs Dallinga did beat Kelleher in the 50th minute but referee Georgi Kabakov brought play back for a foul on Joel Matip on the edge of the penalty area.

However, Dallinga’s movement got the better of Matip eight minutes later when Diaz lost the ball on the left wing, running in behind to collect Suazo’s cross with his first touch and fire past Kelleher with his second.

Liverpool pulled a goal back they barely deserved in fortuitous fashion in the 74th minute when Gomez’s looping header towards the far post was turned into his own net by Casseres.

But that luck was short-lived as almost instantly Frank Magri converted Suazo’s cross.

Although Jota’s weaving run and shot set up Quansah’s moment in the spotlight late on, the technology denied the young centre-back.

In an exclusive extract from his new memoir, Si Senor: My Liverpool Years, Roberto Firmino opens up on the moment he knew he would leave the club – and how he told Jurgen Klopp.
From ‘Si Senor: My Liverpool Years’:
The straw that broke the camel’s back was a match against Wolves, in which I came on as a substitute in the last minute. That was it. Right there, I understood. As we say in Brazil, the penny dropped.

I knew now.

I called my agents. Roger Wittmann and Christian Rapp met with me for a face-to-face talk. We left the living room and went to my room: just me, Christian, Roger and Larissa, no distractions. Christian and Roger were perfectly transparent about everything that was happening and the club’s view of my future.

It wasn’t a war. It was just a difference in understanding about what I could offer to Liverpool.

I reflected a lot and realized that God’s plan was to take me somewhere else. The signs were all there since that conversation with Pastor Daniel in Maceio. I had been stubborn.

God didn’t want me to stay in Liverpool, but I was insisting. I didn’t listen. But I couldn’t avoid it any more. It was time to accept. I decided it was time to seek another challenge for myself, another purpose. My time at Liverpool had come to an end.

It had been a beautiful story that I wanted to finish the right way. We are very grateful for everything we experienced in England; all of our dreams, mine and my family’s, were fulfilled.

We experienced the greatest joys and triumphs; it was all so intense. And we didn’t want to leave with any bitterness, anger or resentment.

If it was difficult for them to say, well then I would say it: ‘I’m not staying. I’ll go’. If deep in their hearts they weren’t sure about extending my contract, if they didn’t know what to do, then for the good of everyone I would make the decision to leave.

And so we arrived at 3 March 2023. I wrote the message to Klopp on my own, on my cell phone, and let my heart guide my fingers.

Then I went to training.

After the session, I went to the Boss’s office and asked his assistant if he was available. When I walked into the room, Klopp was sitting behind his desk, drinking a cup of coffee.

He looked at me and said, ‘I think I know what you want to talk about’. I’m not sure if he knew. Maybe he thought I was going to complain about not getting many minutes. Maybe he knew the topic could be my departure. I had my phone in my hand. I opened the note titled ‘Meeting’.

But I didn’t even need to read it. I had practised my speech so many times that I had memorised it. It felt like an eternity, but it only took a few seconds for it to leave my mouth. Our conversation didn’t last longer than five minutes.

‘There are things that are not in my hands. I don’t have control over everything’, the Boss said. He accepted the decision very quickly. One of my fears was that he would insist on me staying. I had already made the decision guided by God and didn’t want to backtrack now. It had been hard enough getting this far.

He had fought to keep my friend Philippe Coutinho a few years back; I didn’t want the same to happen with me. Now, having finally accepted the inevitable, I took the step I had never wanted to take.

But no, Klopp didn’t insist. At that moment, it seemed like he already knew, or had come to terms with the idea. There would be no extension. It was over.

I praised the Boss a lot, said he was the best coach I had ever worked with, and thanked him greatly for the opportunity he had given me at Liverpool. I think he felt awkward and it was the most emotional moment of the conversation.

Right afterwards, he said he didn’t want to say goodbye yet. After all, there were still three months left in the season. That’s what I wanted to convey as well.

The need to keep going and fighting until the end was in the message I had written on my phone. For all that we were parting, our mindset was still the same. ‘Let’s wait a bit, Bobby. We’ll bid farewell later’.

There was football to play. We shook hands and I left the room.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faces an unexpected shortage of midfielders ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Brentford, despite being spoilt for choice earlier this season. Two fresh injury concerns have placed Klopp on the back foot, leaving him with little room to manoeuvre when it comes to team selection.

Speaking before Thursday’s Europa League showdown with Toulouse, Klopp confirmed that Curtis Jones would not be fit to return until after the international break due to a ‘low grade’ hamstring issue.

Ryan Gravenberch is also at risk of missing out after skipping the trip to France with a knee problem. Klopp stated that phasing the Dutchman back in for the Brentford match is a possibility, but fielding him from the start may be a stretch too far.

Separate injuries to Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic, as well as Alexis Mac Allister’s suspension, has left the Reds scraping the bottom of the barrell to put together a midfield three.

Dominik Szoboszlai has been a revelation since signing from RB Leipzig during the summer, but his performance in the 1-1 draw with Luton Town at the weekend showed striking signs of fatigue.

Nevertheless, the midfielder shortage means that the Hungarian is likely to be handed a start. Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott are the other two prime candidates, while Cody Gakpo could be dropped back into midfield or Trent Alexander-Arnold could be moved in from the right.

Meanwhile Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita all left on free transfers. Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table, three points behind Manchester City with only one defeat to their name this term.

Controversial VAR call denies Liverpool denied dramatic 97th minute comeback vs Toulouse

Liverpool were denied a dramatic 97th minute equaliser for a controversial VAR decision in their Europa League clash against Toulouse on Thursday evening.

With Liverpool 3-2 down to Toulouse with just seconds on the clock, a scramble in the box led to defender Jarell Quansah sweeping the ball into the net and wheeling away in celebration.

However, after a lengthy VAR check Alexis Mac Allister was penalised for a handball in the build up and the goal was overturned.

While the ball had clearly bounced off the midfielder’s chest onto his arm, it was a long time before Quansah eventually scored.

It may have been wrongly ruled out however. Indeed, IFAB laws, as per Sky Sports, state that an “accidental handball that leads to a team-mate scoring a goal or having a goal-scoring opportunity will no longer be considered an offence”.

After the game a bemused Jurgen Klopp stormed onto the pitch, presumably to question the officials’ decision to overturn the late equaliser.

On TNT Sports however, Joe Cole argued that the referee was right to rule the goal out.

The former Liverpool midfielder said: “I think it was a handball.

“It was a strange situation because we were all wondering what was going to be the decision given the handball happened quite a while before the goal went in, but the ref got it right.

“Much to the dismay and frustration of Liverpool fans and players, it was the right call.”

Liverpool dropped points for the first time in Group E, but still remain at the summit, two points clear of Thursday night’s opponents and five clear of Union Saint-Gilloise.

While it was a night to forget in France, a win from either of their final group matches will secure a top-two spot for the Reds.

A VAR expert has slammed the ‘terrible decision’ that led to Liverpool’s late equaliser being chalked off for a handball on Alexis Mac Allister.

Jarell Quansah thought he had secured the Reds a point on Thursday evening, having been 3-1 down to Toulouse at one point, in the 97th minute. However, after a lengthy check, it was deemed that Mac Allister handled the ball in the build-up.

Dale Johnson posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “So many reasons why Mac Allister handball is a terrible VAR decision: Arm close to body, being withdrawn not moved to ball, high on arm, not deliberate, way back in play.”

However, Johnson then pointed out why the goal was allowed to stand, and why it wouldn’t in the Premier League. He added: “But this is UEFA, with goals disallowed for any handball in attack phase.”

UEFA rules state that any handball during an attack will result in the goal being chalked off. UEFA Football Board put to UEFA that a handball that was a result of a deflection of the same player shouldn’t count – but it is not an official law.

Jurgen Klopp was unhappy with the decision in his post-match press conference: “I only saw the video back and for me, it’s not a handball, but how can I decide that?

“Yes, the ball goes to the chest and I don’t see contact with the arm, to be honest. Maybe they had a different picture than I had. It’s pretty long ago before we score the goal, [I was thinking] ‘where’s the free-kick?’

“That’s interesting, we could talk about that. I heard, I didn’t see it, that there could have been a penalty for us in another situation, I don’t know.”
