Illness has hit more West Ham stars for Liverpool confirms a top source as fatigue takes its toll ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

West Ham will be far from full strength for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

That has been confirmed to Hammers News by the top source inside West Ham less than eight hours before kick-off.

We reported on claims earlier that West Ham’s stars had complained about fatigue ahead of the trip to face Liverpool at Anfield for a place in the semi-finals.

It comes after a sickness bug impacted key players in recent matches – particularly the 5-0 drubbing at Fulham.

Now illness has hit more West Ham stars for Liverpool confirms the top source as fatigue takes its toll.

The source has confirmed that illness and fatigue will mean West Ham will not be full strength for the clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

“Some are tired/worn out,” the source told Hammers News.

“A few are sick, so we won’t be at 100% strength.”

It’s a real blow at a key time for West Ham as they go in search of another trophy. And West Ham fans will be justifiably concerned having witnessed what can happen when Moyes is missing even just a few key players.

Hammers supporters were left feeling sick and tired themselves when the draw was made.

Because since the 2010/11 season, West Ham have drawn a so-called “Big Six” side 19 times in the domestic cups.

Should West Ham make it to the semi-final, they would face one of Chelsea, Middlesbrough or Fulham over two legs.

Liverpool will see their sporting director Jorg Schmadtke leave at the end of the season having just arrived at Anfield during the summer.

The German signed a short-term deal with the Premier League giants following Julian Ward’s decision to stand down from the role and will work with the Reds during January before leaving ahead of the summer transfer window, reports Sky Germany.

Schmadtke oversaw Liverpool’s midfield rebuild ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, which saw Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all come through the door at Anfield; while the old guard of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner left the Merseyside club.

The German sporting director will now be looking to do any last business for the campaign in January, where Klopp and Liverpool may add a centre-back to their squad to replace the injured Joel Matip.

Liverpool want to beat Premier League rivals to sign Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie after showing serious interest in the summer transfer window.

Joel Matip’s crushing ACL injury and resulting surgery means he will not play another game this season.

His contract expiring at the end of the campaign also means he may have played his last game for the Reds.

Schalke released him as a free agent in 2016 and since then, he has been a wonderful player for Liverpool even though his injury misfortune has prevented him from reaching his full potential.

While the Jurgen Klopp already had plans to replace the veteran defender, those may now be accelerated.

Transfer latest as Liverpool aim to beat Man City to Hincapie
Earlier this week, German transfer guru Florian Plettenberg reported that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie is “not happy” with his role at Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, Caught Offside reports that Liverpool aim to “move ahead of Chelsea and Manchester City” in the race to secure his signature in transfer windows to come.

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly a “big fan” of the 21-year-old and Liverpool are “showing the strongest interest so far”.

Hincapie is under contract until 2027 and Leverkusen want to keep him for at least another year, however, his lack of game time could force the issue.

It will reportedly cost at least €70 million (£60m) to convince Xabi Alonso’s side to release him.

Liverpool were reportedly in “advanced” talks to sign Hincapie in the summer and could now return to sign the Ecuadorian centre-back to deal with Matip’s injury-enforced absence.

Liverpool also interested in Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong
Hincapie is not the only Leverkusen player attracting interest with Liverpool also keen on 20-year-old Florian Wirtz and 23-year-old Jeremie Frimpong.

Reports in late November suggested Liverpool are preparing a €90 million (£78M) bid for Wirtz although Daily Mail reporter Lewis Steele rubbished these claims.

He said: “There’s no concrete interest yet in Florian Wirtz but that doesn’t mean he is not on Liverpool’s radar. They look at a lot of players.”

Frimpong is also of interest, according to depor.com, who claimed last month that Liverpool and Chelsea “have decided to enter the bidding.”

Time will tell if this claim is worth its weight in gold.

‘I’m really not convinced’: Tim Sherwood says he’s not sure £70m Liverpool player is good enough

For a brief moment, it looked as though Darwin Nunez was going to make this season his at Liverpool.

His heroic brace against Newcastle earlier this season looked like the perfect launching pad to make his name at Anfield, and he did kick on slightly afterwards.

However, he’s. now gone 10 games without a goal, and questions are starting to be asked once again.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has been discussing Nunez after the Manchester United game on Sunday, and he says that he’s really not convinced that Nunez is good enough to be Liverpool’s number nine.

Sherwood shared what he thinks of the Uruguayan.

“Normally Mo Salah is a prolific scorer in this fixture especially, but just that wee bit of composure. Darwin Nunez I’m really not convinced about, I don’t think he’s of the quality to be a number nine for Liverpool, he’s not really a team man for me, no rotation,” Sherwood said.

Plenty to prove
There is a lot to like about Darwin Nunez as a footballer, but it has to be said that he has lots to prove.

At £70m, Liverpool would have every right to expect more from Nunez. No goals in his last 10 games is poor to say the least, and that lack of killer instinct in front of goal has been an ongoing problem.

For a long time, we’ve chalked it down to inexperience and claimed that Jurgen Klopp will be able to teach him how to improve that area of his game, but after 18 months in England, we have to start wondering whether or not this is a problem that has a solution.

Nunez needs to improve, otherwise, he will never truly live up to his pricetag.

The raw attributes are there, and we’re not willing to write Nunez off just yet.

Bayern Munich are reportedly open to selling Joshua Kimmich, with Liverpool linked with the Germany international.

The 28-year-old midfielder is regarded by many as one of the best in his position in world football, with Kimmich an established superstar for both Bayern and the German national team.

However, rumours have been circulating that Kimmich could leave the Bundesliga giants in 2024, with Liverpool one of the sides reportedly interested in signing the versatile midfielder.

And according to Bild, Bayern are now open to selling Kimmich, with the German side eager to upgrade their midfield next summer, which could result in the sale of the 28-year-old.

Praised by Julian Nagelsmann as a ‘world-class’ player, Kimmich would be quite the coup for many top sides if Bayern really do go through with the unthinkable and offload the midfielder.

And for Liverpool, the Reds should really consider a move for the German maestro, especially if the likes of Thiago Alcantara are due to leave Anfield in 2024 next summer.

Indeed, the Germany international has everything needed to thrive in the Premier League, with Kimmich likely open to working under Jurgen Klopp, as well.

Having cemented its status as the world’s richest football league, the Premier League is unsurprisingly home to some of the highest-paid players in the world.

Every Premier League club now receives hundreds of millions in television money and average pay packets have subsequently skyrocketed in recent years

Using data from Capology, we’ve taken a look at the top five highest-earning players from each Premier League club.

Note: we’ve not included any players that are currently on loan at a Premier League side or are out on loan as their wage bill is often divided between two clubs.

Arsenal’s highest-paid players

1. Kai Havertz – £280,000-per-week
2. Gabriel Jesus – £265,000-per-week
3= Declan Rice – £240,000-per-week
3= Martin Odegaard – £240,000-per-week
5. Thomas Partey – £200,000-per-week

Havertz moved across London in the summer and got a slight pay rise, going from £250,000-per-week at Chelsea to £280,000-per-week at Arsenal.

The Gunners also broke their transfer record to sign Rice from West Ham United and they quadrupled his £60,000-a-week salary.

Aston Villa’s highest-paid players

1= Youri Tielemans – £150,000-per-week
1= Boubacar Kamara – £150,000-per-week
3= Ollie Watkins – £130,000-per-week
3= Moussa Diaby – £130,000-per-week
5= Emiliano Martinez – £120,000-per-week
5= Lucas Digne – £120,000-per-week
5= John McGinn – £120,000-per-week

While Villa didn’t have to pay a transfer fee for Tielemans or Kamara, they both signed lucrative contracts and are earning £150,000-a-week in wages.

Watkins has been instrumental to Villa’s success under Unai Emery and recently committed his long-term future to the club by penning a new contract, which took his wages to £130,000-per-week.

Bournemouth’s highest-paid players

1. Justin Kluivert – £80,000-per-week
2. Tyler Adams – £60,000-per-week
3= David Brooks – £50,000-per-week

Bournemouth are now owned by American billionaire Bill Foley, and he handed out lucrative contracts to Kluivert and Adams in the summer transfer window.

TEAMtalk recently revealed that they have also offered defender Lloyd Kelly a club-record deal in a bid to persuade him to sign a new contract.

Brentford’s highest-paid players

1. Ben Mee – £55,000-per-week
2. Mathias Jensen – £50,000-per-week
3. Bryan Mbeumo – £45,000-per-week
4= Kristoffer Ajer – £40,000-per-week
4= Frank Onyeka – £40,000-per-week

Brentford are widely regarded to be among the best-run and most financially sustainable clubs in England and it’s easy to see why.

They have a tightly controlled wage bill and Ivan Toney – who has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea – is earning just £20,000-per-week.

Brighton’s highest-paid players

1. Adam Lallana – £90,000-per-week
2= Lewis Dunk – £80,000-per-week
2= Kaoru Mitoma – £80,000-per-week
4. Pascal Gross – £65,000-per-week
5. James Milner – £60,000-per-week

Lallana joined Brighton on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 and is the top earner among the permanent members of their squad.

But Ansu Fati is on loan with the Seagulls this season and they are reportedly paying 80 per cent of his Barcelona wages, making them liable for around £128,000-per-week.

The first signing of the Todd Boehly era, Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 and signed a five-year contract worth around £325,000-a-week.

Romelu Lukaku was also earning £325,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, but he took a pay cut in order to secure a loan move to Roma.

Crystal Palace’s highest-paid players

1= Eberechi Eze – £100,000-per-week
1= Dean Henderson – £100,000-per-week
4. Odsonne Edouard – £90,000-per-week
5= Nathaniel Clyne – £80,000-per-week

After rejecting a move to Chelsea in the summer, Olise stayed at Palace and was given a new four-year contract worth £100,000-per-week.

Henderson – who joined the club from Manchester United in the summer transfer window – and Eze are also on the same salary as Olise.

Everton’s highest-paid players

1. Abdoulaye Doucoure – £130,000-per-week
2. Jordan Pickford – £125,000-per-week
3. Andre Gomes – £112,308-per-week

Doucoure scored the goal that secured Everton’s Premier League survival at the end of the 2022/23 season and has since usurped Pickford as the highest-paid player at Goodison Park.

Andre Gomes and Dele Alli are yet to make a first-team appearance in 2023/24 and they are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Fulham’s highest-paid players

1. Raul Jimenez – £100,000-per-week
2= Willian – £90,000-per-week
2= Bernd Leno – £90,000-per-week
4= Joao Palhinha – £80,000-per-week
4= Alex Iwobi – £80,000-per-week

After selling Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer, Fulham signed Jimenez from Wolves and gave him a two-year deal worth £100,000-per-week.

Palhinha got a significant pay rise at Craven Cottage after his proposed move to Bayern Munich fell through on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool’s highest-paid players

1. Mohamed Salah – £350,000-per-week
2. Virgil Van Dijk – £220,000-per-week
3. Thiago Alcantara – £200,000-per-week
4. Trent Alexander-Arnold – £180,000-per-week

Salah signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool in 2022 and his wages went from £200,000-per-week to £350,000-per-week, making him the highest-paid player in the club’s illustrious history.

But that pales in comparison to the £2.45million-a-week wage that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are reportedly willing to offer the Egypt international.

Luton Town’s highest-paid players

1. Ryan Giles – £35,000-per-week
2= Ross Barkley – £30,000-per-week
2= Tahith Chong – £30,000-per-week
2= Jacob Brown – £30,000-per-week
2= Marvelous Nakamba – £30,000-per-week

Luton Town have the lowest wage bill in the Premier League and Mohamed Salah receives at least 10 times more than their highest earner.

Manchester City’s highest-paid players

1. Kevin De Bruyne – £400,000-per-week
2. Erling Haaland – £375,000-per-week
3= Jack Grealish – £300,000-per-week
3= Bernardo Silva – £300,000-per-week
5. John Stones – £250,000-per-week

Widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, De Bruyne is the highest-paid player in the Premier League and earns £20.8million-per-year.

He’s closely followed by teammate Haaland, who reportedly has a series of bonuses in his contract that could see his weekly wage surge beyond the £850,000 mark.

Manchester United’s highest-paid players

1. Casemiro – £350,000-per-week
2. Raphael Varane – £340,000-per-week
3. Marcus Rashford – £300,000-per-week
4= Jadon Sancho – £250,000-per-week
4= Mason Mount – £250,000-per-week
4= Anthony Martial – £250,000-per-week

United have the highest wage bill in the Premier League in 2023/24, but they are looking to offload some of their biggest earners.

Casemiro, Varane and Sancho have all been linked with moves away from Old Trafford while Martial is out of contract at the end of the season.

Newcastle United’s highest-paid players

1. Bruno Guimaraes – £160,000-per-week
2= Alexander Isak – £120,000-per-week
2= Kieran Trippier – £120,000-per-week

5. Sven Botman – £90,000-per-week

Guimaraes helped Newcastle finish in the top four in 2022/23 and has since signed a new long-term contract, which increased his salary by £40,000-per-week.

Sandro Tonali is on £120,000-per-week, but the Telegraph claim that Newcastle are exploring the possibility of reducing his wages after he was handed a 10-month ban for gambling breaches.

Nottingham Forest’s highest-paid players

1= Callum Hudson-Odoi – £80,000-per-week
1= Felipe – £80,000-per-week
1= Morgan Gibbs-White – £80,000-per-week
1= Chris Wood – £80,000-per-week
5. Ibrahim Sangare – £75,000-per-week

There is a four-way tie to be Forest’s highest earner as Gibbs-White, Felipe, Wood and Hudson-Odoi are all on £80,000-per-week.

Divock Origi is spending the 2023/24 season on loan at the City Ground, but it remains unknown how much of his £120,000-per-week salary the Reds are covering.

Since joining Sheffield United from Liverpool in 2020, Brewster has struggled to justify his £35,000-per-week wages and has scored just five goals for the club.

Tottenham’s highest-paid players

1. Son Heung-min – £190,000-per-week
2. Ivan Perisic – £180,000-per-week
3. James Maddison – £170,000-per-week
4. Cristian Romero – £165,000-per-week
5. Dejan Kulusevski – £110,000-per-week

Following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich in the summer, Son Heuing-min is now the highest-paid player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He is closely followed by Perisic, who is out of contract at the end of the season and is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

West Ham United’s highest-paid players

1. Lucas Paqueta – £150,000-per-week
2= Danny Ings – £125,000-per-week
2= Kurt Zouma – £125,000-per-week
4= Alphonse Areola – £120,000-per-week
4= Jarrod Bowen – £120,000-per-week

Despite being linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer, Paqueta ultimately remained at the London Stadium.

TEAMtalk understands that West Ham are preparing a contract offer for the Brazil international and his wages will rise from a base salary of £150,000-per-week to over £200,000-per-week.

Wolves’ highest-paid players

1. Pablo Sarabia – £90,000-per-week
2= Nelson Semedo – £80,000-per-week
2= Fabio Silva – £80,000-per-week
4= Matheus Cunha – £60,000-per-week
4= Daniel Podence – £60,000-per-week

Wolves’ top five has changed a lot in recent months as Raul Jimenez, Joao Moutinho, Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes all left Molineux in the summer.

Sarabia is the only player from last season’s top five who is still at the club, but he has struggled to cement his place in the starting Xl.

Ben Doak is set for a prolonged period on the Liverpool sidelines.

The winger has torn his lateral meniscus, which means he requires surgery. Doak suffered his setback when limping off in the 28th minute of the under-21s’ 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend.

The 18-year-old has been on the periphery of Jurgen Klopp’s side throughout the season, making a total of six appearances. Doak may have featured in tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham – but now he is forced to undergo the knife and faces a lengthy lay-off.

Assistant manager Pep Lijnders said: “That’s not a good one. He tore his lateral meniscus, which needs surgery. That one will take [a] longer time. He is young, he is a fit guy, he is a positive guy so for sure he will come back stronger and we need him to come back with the same fire he has with the ball, how he was. He can take time and we will wait for him.”

PSG ‘close’ to agreement for Liverpool transfer target

Paris Saint-Germain are close to an agreement for Liverpool-linked Lucas Beraldo, according to one report.

The 20-year-old defender had been named as a possible target for the Reds ahead of the transfer window re-opening next month, as Jurgen Klopp contends with mounting injury issues.

Liverpool had already earmarked at least one defensive addition for 2024. However, the season-ending injury to Joel Matip has only furthered the need for reinforcements at the back.

The Reds have been linked with a number of centre backs ahead of January and had even been named as the favourites in the race for Sao Paulo’s Beraldo, who has been impressing in South America.

However, according to Santi Aouna, it is actually PSG who will complete a winter deal for the Brazil youth international.

The Foot Mercato journalist wrote on X: “PSG is confident of completing the arrival of Lucas Beraldo for 20+5M € bonus. Close agreement between the parties. Possible medical examination next week.”

Aouna adds that PSG are also in advanced negotiations with Corinthians for Gabriel Moscardo, an 18-year-old midfielder who has also been loosely linked to Liverpool in recent weeks.

While Beraldo may now be off the table, whether Liverpool make any signings next month remains to be seen.

Jurgen Klopp has publicly played down Liverpool’s chances bringing in a replacement for the injured Matip. However, another report claims that the Reds are open to deals ‘if the price is right’.

Goncalo Inacio (Sporting CP) is another centre back who has been regularly linked, while Piero Hincapie (Leverkusen) and Leny Yoro (Lille) too have been touted as potential targets.

Anfield Watch understands that revamping the defence is the priority for the Reds in 2024, though a big-money arrival may be more likely in the summer.

Liverpool do have recent form for a January deal, despite Klopp’s comments, having signed Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in the previous two years.
