Manchester City are out of the Champions League after a heartbreaking penalty shootout exit to Real Madrid in their epic quarter-final.
Real had taken the lead early on, beating the offside trap to convert at the second attempt through Rodrygo. It would take an hour of patient play, slow build-up and chances slowly being carved out until City were level. Jack Grealish had been brilliant for over an hour and eyebrows were raised when he was replaced – but Jeremy Doku was an inspired introduction in his place.
Doku’s cross was blocked but only as far as De Bruyne, who fired into the roof of the net and sent the City fans wild. The Belgian wasted two good chances before the 90 minutes were up, but extra time would follow to extend this enthralling tie. Penalties were needed to decide the tie, with Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic missing their spot-kicks to allow Real a chance to progress – an opportunity they wouldn’t pass up after a heroic defensive effort on their part.

Bellingham’s show of respect to City
On Tuesday, Jude Bellingham diplomatically dodged questions over his chances of joining City in the summer when he switched Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid. There was interest from east Manchester, but his heart was always set on Madrid. Here he was, back in Manchester as an opposition player – having scored here for Dortmund on his previous visit when Erling Haaland was his teammate.
After facing the media 24 hours earlier, Bellingham was the first Real Madrid player to wander out to view the Etihad pitch pre-match, headphones in, earning applause from the small number of away fans in place. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, on punditry duty pitchside, stopped and videoed Bellingham from afar, reacting just like the autograph hunters pitchside when Bellingham shot him a smile and a wave.
A video of Bellingham admiring the Etihad for Dortmund went viral on his last visit, but more because of Haaland’s gushing reaction to the stadium. Bellingham showed respect by walking around the City badges printed on the floor at the mouth of the tunnel that day, and he repeated the act when he came out before the game for a walk. Sure enough, when emerging for warm-ups and whenever he passed the badges for the rest of the evening, Bellingham went the long way round if it meant avoiding the opposition badge.
City may have missed out on Bellingham, but the England man still clearly has the utmost respect for the Blues – even if he did sprint the length of the Etihad pitch to lead the celebrations with the Real fans after they won the shootout.
Walker’s half-time protest
It looked like Federico Valverde and then Vinicius Jr were offside in the build-up to Real Madrid’s opener, but the returning Kyle Walker was playing both on each time. Walker couldn’t cut out the cross to Rodrygo and could only watch him turn in his own rebound from the floor. The hand immediately went up for offside, but the assistant referee had got the calls right in real-time, and there was no need for the VAR officials to draw lines to check.
That didn’t stop Walker from making a beeline for the assistant at half-time, who was operating on the opposite side from his spot at right-back. Walker made his case over something he was unhappy with, and because there were no other contentious decisions involving the defender and that particular official, one can only assume the goal was the point of discussion. Walker made his case fairly strongly as the players walked off at the break, with Walker having to back down in the end.
Maybe the pre-match change of ends would have changed things, as the sides switched around after the coin toss. Walker deployed that particular tactic at Anfield and at home against Newcastle and hasn’t played since – so he could have been trying to ensure Real were shooting away from their fans in the second half. Or Real may have tried to unsettle City if Nacho won the toss. If it was Walker’s call, it might have backfired.

Dias’ telling reaction to De Bruyne goal
There was as much relief as celebration when Kevin De Bruyne fired into the roof of the net with 15 minutes remaining after an hour of pressure following Rodrygo’s opener. De Bruyne himself had been poor by his own standards, but he is a different player in the box and gambled on Jeremy Doku’s cross being cut out. It was, De Bruyne was there, and City were level.
As the Etihad erupted and De Bruyne wheeled off, some of his teammates joined him in the corner by the Real Madrid fans. Then there was Ruben Dias, telling any teammate he could to get back, focus, and go for another goal. Walker wore the armband on the night, vice-captain De Bruyne got them level, but third-in-command Dias was providing the leadership.
Just before the equaliser, with City probing to get their goal, the fans began a rarely-heard chant to motivate their team. ‘We’re Man City, we fight ’til the end,’ they sang. It’s not often heard in these parts because City don’t often have to show their fighting spirit to chase a game because they’re usually in control. But it can be forgotten that they possess a squad full of fighters and that’s why they are champions of Europe and the world.
Guardiola’s revealing on-pitch team talks
The recent Netflix documentary sent us inside the City dressing room, but Pep Guardiola had to do his team talks on the pitch before and during extra-time. That wouldn’t have been too much of a problem for the manager – he regularly offers advice to players after games regardless of whether the cameras are watching, and uses breaks in play to summon players every week. So when City needed some inspiration after a toiling 90 minutes, Guardiola appeared to focus on the collective rather than offer individual instructions.
Gathering his players in a huddle at the start of extra time and then at the half-time break, Guardiola had some short words for his players after a brief conflab with his coaches. After 90 minutes, he made the bold call to replace Haaland – notable even if Haaland has been kept quiet for two legs. Julian Alvarez came on, and at the half-time break, Haaland was motivating his teammates.
There are only so many tactical changes that can be offered to a squad in that scenario, so the huddles looked to serve the purpose of re-energising the players and encouraging them for the challenge ahead. In general, as the players and fans were nervous from the start, Guardiola was the epitome of calm throughout (by his standards), with some level-headed substitutions changing the game and he clearly knew the right things to say to his players.
In the end, City went out through the lottery of penalties, and they will have to wait for another go at the Champions League.

Jude Bellingham uses bizarre tackic to stop Erling Haaland as old teammates reunite in Champions League quarters-final
‘Unbelievable’… Shay Given says Manchester City man is the best player in the world in his position
Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals after being taken to penalties against Real Madrid on Wednesday night – but Shay Given still raved about one Man City player.
The two sides came into tonight’s second leg at The Etihad after drawing at The Bernabeu – with Josko Gvardiol, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva got their names on the score sheet against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Andriy Lunin won it for Madrid, stopping kicks from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic. It might not have got top penalties if Viniciur Jr had scored when through – only for Kyle Walker to get back and stop him.
Shay Given said about 33-year-old Walker, in extra time, as per BBC Live: “Unbelievable, you will not see a better full-back in world football. Kyle Walker showing his pace and power – brilliant defending.”

Rodrygo got the the first goal of the second leg, started by a brilliant first touch by Jude Bellingham – who played in Vinicius Jr and his low cross found Rodrygo, who tapped home in just the 12th minute.
There was only one more goal on the night, Kevin De Bruyne scoring to level the tie on 76 minutes. A battle of Real Madrid’s defensive quality, and Manchester City’s ability to unlock a very strong defence.
Real Madrid beat Manchester City on penalties to go through
City had numerous chances but Real looked quality on the counter. Chances missed by De Bruyne with the score at 1-1, and then Antonio Rudiger – saw the game finally reach a penalty shootout. City lost.
Andriy Lunin won it for Madrid, stopping kicks from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic. It might not have got top penalties if Viniciur Jr had scored when through – only for Kyle Walker to get back and stop him.

Madrid win, but Kyle Walker remains the world’s best right-back
For an explosive player, at 33, to last the entire 120 minutes against Ancelotti’s Madrid and coming up against Vinicius Jr – is incredible in itself. But, even then. showing the guile and fitness to get back.
It is no surprise that Walker was given a new contract until the summer of 2026 because even though he will turn 34 before the end of the season, he remains one of City’s best and most-important players.
It won’t be a Champions League medal draped around Walker’s neck this season, but there is every chance a Premier League and FA Cup one will be – and who knows, possibly a Euro 2024 medal as well.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has joined Manchester City’s growing worldwide fan club.
Pablo Zabaleta claims his Argentina pal has followed the Blues’ recent rise and asks about them when they meet up on national duty.
Barca superstar Messi will surely have been impressed by the 6-0 destruction of Tottenham on Sunday which featured another scintillating display by Sergio Aguero – another Argentina star.
Aguero struck twice to take his tally for the season to 15 and is now the deadliest striker in Premier League history in terms of goals per minutes on the pitch.
Zabaleta revealed that Messi always tells him he joined City at the perfect moment in 2008 because Sheikh Mansour bought the club days later, paving the way for the arrival of top quality talent such as Aguero.
“I remember when we were in Barcelona, we were very close friends,” said Zabaleta. “We had known each other for a number of years – I was just starting out at Espanyol and Lionel was at Barca.
“When I signed for City, I think two days later the news broke that Sheikh Mansour had bought the club and Lionel always recalls that I joined at such a fantastic time.
“He asked me a lot about City, but I couldn’t tell him much because I didn’t know much myself. It’s something we often talk about, plus the fact that I’m still here.”

Spanish winger Jesus Navas, who cost City £14.9million from Seville in the summer, reckons Aguero will soon be classed alongside Messi as one of the world’s best players.
Navas said: “Sergio is among the best and right now he’s in really good shape. We all know about his capabilities.”
Aguero’s strike partner Alvaro Negredo also netted against Spurs and the pair have 25 goals between them.
And Navas believes Negredo and Aguero are fast becoming the Premier League’s most feared attacking duo.
He said: “They’re scoring very easily at the moment. The Premier League suits their style and that’s fantastic for us.
“I’m not surprised by Negredo because I already knew how good he was. He has always loved contact with defenders so this is the perfect league for him in my opinion.”
Navas registered his first two league strikes for City against Spurs, but says he will always be happy to be a goalmaker rather than a goaltaker.
“On a personal level, this was my best game for sure,” he said. “Scoring twice and also claiming an assist.
“I’ve always been known more for giving assists rather than scoring, but, of course, I enjoy scoring goals too. If I can score more here then that would be great.
“I like making other people happy. That’s why I’ve always been known for assists, but if I score more, then it helps.”
Aguero is Prem’s most proficient striker… ever!
It’s official – Sergio Aguero is now the most prolific striker in Premier League history.
Aguero joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has scored 45 goals in 5,379 minutes – one every 119.5 minutes.
While his total is still well behind that of Thierry Henry, who scored 175 league goals for Arsenal, Aguero is the most deadly of the players who have netted more than 40 Premier League goals.

Liverpool want to sign £60M Premier League star but he prefers Man Utd

Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace’s standout winger Michael Olise may hit a snag as reports indicate the player has a preference for Manchester United.
Despite Liverpool and Chelsea’s readiness to activate Olise’s £60 million release clause following his impressive performances, Olise’s lifelong support for Manchester United could tilt his decision in their favour.
Olise, who had previously rejected a move to Chelsea last summer despite a £35 million release clause being triggered, chose to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.
His decision to remain was quickly followed by a new contract that increased his release fee. His continued form this season, with nine goal contributions in just 12 appearances despite injuries, has made him a hot property in the transfer market.
Meanwhile, Liverpool continues to explore options to strengthen their squad, and Olise had been identified as a potential target to enhance their attacking lineup.
However, according to Football Transfers, with the player reportedly leaning towards Manchester United, Liverpool may need to reassess their transfer strategies.
In the January transfer window, journalist Ben Jacobs said to “keep an eye on” Olise to Liverpool but it doesn’t look a likely transfer now.
The situation around Olise emerges amidst Liverpool’s broader ambitions to refresh their forward options, especially considering uncertainties around other player movements and performance inconsistencies.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool may have to look beyond Olise to secure the necessary reinforcements to maintain their competitive edge.

Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro has admitted that Xabi Alonso could end up managing Real Madrid amid links with Liverpool.
Alonso was heavily linked with becoming the next Liverpool manager when Jurgen Klopp leaves at the end of the season. The former Reds midfielder recently guided Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title, beating Bayern Munich in the process.
That success led to Alonso being linked with being Klopp’s successor at Anfield as well as replacing Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich. However, Alonso confirmed last month that he would be remaining in charge at Leverkusen beyond this season and would not be moving to Liverpool.
Carro has spoken about Alonso’s future, where he has also been linked with man
