‘I couldn’t leave’… Georginio Rutter shares how he first reacted when Leeds United came calling

Georginio Rutter is renowned for his off-pitch pursuits, whether that be music or becoming a race horse owner and now he has started his own YouTube channel, documenting his career so far.

The effervescent 22-year-old starred for Leeds last season. Named in The Championship Team of the Season, Rutter had a hand in 24 goals in his 51 games for Leeds in all competitions – scoring only eight.

But laying on a massive 16 assists, mostly from the no.10 position. The Frenchman though got off to a poor start at Leeds, joining the club for a club-record fee from German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

With Leeds struggling in the Premier League, Rutter arrived under Jesse Marsch but soon after the now-Canada boss was sacked.

In fact, Rutter played under four managers in his first six months at Leeds.

Rutter shares his reaction after Leeds called his representatives

Marsch, Michael Skubala, Javi Gracia and then Sam Allardyce. The latter even admitted that he would not use Rutter in his last four games, saying Rutter is a player for next season rather than a relegation scrap.

In a way, Allardyce was right. Rutter was forced to adapt to a new country, a new league, managerial changes and a new team as well as relegation at the tender age of 21 and it saw the Frenchman struggle.

But under Daniel Farke, Rutter was given a new lease of life. He learned English and was excellent last season and now, speaking candidly on his YouTube channel, he shared his first thoughts as Leeds called.

“I get a call from my agents, they say we’ve had a call from Leeds United. My mind was going very fast. I couldn’t leave my team [Hoffenheim], everyone loved me. But it’s the Premier League, it’s my dream.”

Premier League clubs are circling for Leeds star Rutter

He struggled initially but there is no doubting that Rutter showed he is more than good enough for the Premier League while in the Championship last term. Rutter’s huge 16 assists is clear proof of that.

The attacker is the heartbeat of this Leeds side, producing magic out of nothing. It has caught the eye of Premier League clubs this summer, with Brighton said to have made a £30m bid for the French attacker.

Obviously, that has been rejected. Not least because it would see Leeds make a £5m loss on the forward. With Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray gone, it is more than likely that Rutter stays put at Leeds.
