A perfect Hat trick from Erling Haaland with a clean shot
The old cliche of one game at a time for Manchester City.
There is no point in looking ahead to Real Madrid and dropping points at Selhurst Park. He has to make sure his team get the job done, get three points on the table and look to improve their goal difference at the same time.
There are only Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake out now, and hopefully they are not too far away. It is great for him to have a nearly fully fit squad to choose from.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed during his pre-game press conference that Ederson could make his return to the City squad against Crystal Palace. The Brazilian keeper has been out with a thigh injury he sustained during Manchester City’s 1-all draw with Liverpool last month.
The City manager told the media that Ederson could return to his match day squad for today’s game at Selhurst Park. He also revealed that Nathan Ake and Kyle Walker remain out for today’s match. When asked about the trio, Guardiola said: “Eddie is much better and maybe will be on the list. Nathan and Kyle are out.”
Guardiola was also asked if the form of Stefan Ortega makes it a difficult choice as to who starts in goal with Ederson set to return. The City manager answered: “Yes, Stefan is playing really good, so we have to think about it as well. I’ll speak with Xavier. Maybe we give a little more time, maybe not, we’ll see tonight and tomorrow. But, we have the guarantee. Of course, Scott is important third keeper and important for many reasons, but Eddie and Stefen… we are so safe because both are exceptional keepers, exceptional.”
The world champions are fortunate to have to quality keepers to choose from. With Stefan Ortega in superb form, it allows Manchester City the luxury of not having to rush Ederson back until he’s fully fit. Ortega has started City’s last two games against Arsenal and Aston Villa. He made several superb saves against Aston Villa to help his team pick up a crucial victory.

Time has not made Pep Guardiola any happier about the Manchester City schedule.
One of his press conferences last week was used to fume about the turnarounds the Blues are being asked to do, with particular scorn for the short time between Villa and Palace this week, and then Real Madrid and their FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea in a few weeks. Guardiola then described it as unfair on Friday as he continues to make his frustration known.
The frustration is only there though because he cares so much. After seven years in England and three consecutive Premier League titles, the Catalan is still striving with everything he can to win again – even if that means not giving Real Madrid all the attention he wants to.

Guardiola is most closely associated with the Champions League in his career; first because he won it twice in his first three years of coaching Barcelona in what was a spectacular story, and then because it was an albatross around his neck growing heavier with every year he didn’t. The fact he and City finally managed to win it in Istanbul last year means they are “at peace” with the competition.

However, the serial winner in Guardiola is a sucker for a league title. For all the glamour of European nights, the man who got the Barcelona job by making waves away from the spotlight in the Spanish fourth division values the grit more highly.
Including that title with Barcelona B, the City manager has won the league title in 11 out of his 15 years of coaching. Another triumph this season would mean he is averaging three league titles every four years.
“I love it. Of the domestic trophies, it is the most important – Premier League or La Liga,” he said on Friday. “I’m not going to say the Champions League is not nice, of course it is.
“So now we have it and know how it feels in our soul and we are at peace, for the fact we’ve got it. But [the league is] just the nicest because it’s more difficult, there are more games, you know every week, two or three games.
“The Champions League, of course, is important, but it depends on something you perhaps can’t control. Both are incredibly important, but the Premier League proves a lot.
“It shows the mentality of the teams, being there all the time for many, many years. For me personally, from my education at home or whatever, every day you have to do the best – that means a lot to me personally.”
Guardiola puts a lot on the mentality of his players. He won’t allow any of them simply to focus on the big games, instead turning every match into another chance for the squad to prove themselves.
With the help of Txiki Begiristain and his team building the squad, City have assembled a group that share the manager’s hunger for a nine-month scrap for silverware every single year. Whatever else changes around them, the wish to be able to say they have been the best team in the country over such a long time never goes away.
That has elevated them into a position where, with eight games to go, they are within striking distance of an unprecedented fourth league title in a row. Never mind improving Guardiola’s personal record, it would make history in English football.
It will not be easy, with both Liverpool and Arsenal in a better position on the final straight. But understanding why Guardiola and his players value the league title so much helps to show why they will be giving every bit of energy they have at Selhurst Park on Saturday to fight all the way for another validation of their work.

Julian Alvarez has won pretty much everything there is to win as a player, so much so that he doesn’t know exactly where all his medals are.
“Some are in Argentina and some are in the UK,” he says, although he does know where his World Cup winner’s medal is – locked away in a ‘special cabinet’ back in his home country. This is a player who is a world and continental champion for club and country, a treble winner and a teammate of the best players in the world. Alvarez has 13 major trophies at an average of one every 18 appearances for club and country.
But he still can’t hold down a regular position in the Manchester City team. For Argentina, he is the industrial number nine to allow Lionel Messi to shine as the world’s best number 10.

At City, he is second choice at both nine and 10 behind Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. Yet he scores goals wherever he plays, with 16 this season from 43 appearances along with a club-high of 13 assists. In total for City he averages a goal or assist every 107 minutes. Not bad for a back-up.

‘Almost impossible’ – Man City boss Pep Guardiola makes Real Madrid admission
This season only Phil Foden has played more games for City but that is as a result of De Bruyne and Haaland’s various injury troubles. When both are fit, Alvarez has dropped out to the bench. Despite his increased playing time this term, Alvarez wants to further establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s plans. He will do whatever he must for the team, but isn’t shy of declaring his ambitions to play more as the central striker.
“I played more this season – the first year I had to be more patient – I’ve played in different positions – as a nine or a 10. But I’m happy to be playing a lot more,” he said.

“I can adapt to both nine or 10 but I’d say I prefer playing as a nine. Players here need to be able to adapt to what the manager says – sometimes It can be a bit confusing, changing a lot. But you have to adapt.”
That feels like a diplomatic way of approaching the situation, especially when a goalscoring machine like Haaland is his competition. The Argentine didn’t entertain the talk earlier this year that he couldn’t play alongside the Norwegian, insisting the pair are always working on their partnership.
“It’s a pleasure to play with him always,” he added. “We have shown that we can play together and we give a lot to the team when we do play together.
“I’m used to playing with other strikers – ever since I was a child I’ve always shared the forward roles with other guys. But we have demonstrated that we can play together to help the team.”
His form, coupled with the incredible quality of De Bruyne and Haaland, has led to reports that Alvarez could leave in the summer to be the main man elsewhere, with Real Madrid and Juventus among the clubs linked. Alvarez doesn’t address those rumours directly but insists he is happy where he is at City, fully enjoying his football.
“I’m in the best team in the world, in the best league in the world, and with the best players around me,” he said. “That helps me to grow as a player and a person. I’m really happy here.”
It helps that Alvarez has ‘a part of Argentina’ in Manchester with him. His parents, brothers and girlfriend are all based in the city with him – his brothers were playing for local non-league side Abbey Hey when they arrived but are now looking for an opportunity elsewhere.

Alvarez likes to watch football in his spare time so is keeping a close eye on Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League title race and City have helped him adapt since moving from South America. When asked if he was happy for the Etihad Stadium announcer to use his ‘La Arana’ nickname, he responded positively, clarifying he wanted it announced in Spanish when he scored given the literal translation is ‘the Spider’.
He remains in contact with former City striker Sergio Aguero, who helped him when he signed for City shortly after Aguero left for Barcelona. “We talk a lot – maybe not as much as we used to because he’s outside of football,” Alvarez explains. “He’s doing a lot of streaming now. But we talk when we can.
“Before I moved here I asked him for advice yes – what to do in Manchester, how is the city. I used to watch him as a kid, the same as I watched Messi. He’s always been an example for me but especially now that I play for City.”
So with all those trophies and all those goals, what else is there for the 24-year-old to achieve? For Alvarez, it is simple. Win them all over again.
“There’s been a lot of trophies in a short amount of time. But I want to keep growing as a player and as a person,” he replies. “And why not win all the same titles again? It’s a lot of titles yes – but I want to keep doing it. I will keep training and I will keep working for the fans so we can get more pleasure out of winning.”
