Gary Neville has admitted Tottenham have made a fantastic start to the Premier League season but that Ange Postecoglou should be wary of one thing. Spurs have thus far taken 13 points from a possible 15 with a last-gasp Dejan Kulusevski winner against Sheffield United keeping them hot on the tails of Manchester City and level on points with Liverpool and Arsenal.
In comparison to recent seasons, the north Londoners are providing an entertaining style of football for their supporters, guided by Postecoglou. Tottenham have scored at least two goals in every game with five knocked past Burnley before the international break and they have also kept two clean sheets in the process.
The bright start led Neville to providing his early thoughts on matters at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with significant praise for how Postecoglou sets up his teams. “Well I think we said when we went to Tottenham a couple of weeks ago, it was a Saturday night and they were playing Manchester United, that they were gonna have a lot of fun this season with the way in which Postecoglou plays,” he said on the Gary Neville podcast.

“And I think he really fits the way in which Tottenham see the vision of their club and how they see Tottenham playing sort of over the years.” In his latest comment on Spurs, Neville has seemingly doubled down on his Tottenham verdict with yet more praise for Postecoglou, although he has insisted it is important to note there has only been five Premier League games.
On the latest edition of The Gary Neville podcast, he said: “I said when we went to watch Tottenham versus Manchester United a good few weeks ago now, that they’re going to have a lot of fun this season, the Tottenham fans, and I think that’s really important, that your team has that cohesion with the manager and has that feeling that he belongs there,” said Neville.
“There’s no doubt with Postecoglou that they believe this is a man that’s a good man, he speaks up in interviews, he’s got an honesty about him, he plays good football, he takes risk – which I think is really important for Spurs fans. At this moment, I would say it’s absolutely fantastic but we need to just review it in January, because I’m sure that’s what the Tottenham coaching staff will be thinking; very early in the season, not a time to get carried away, a time to keep working and next weekend is a showcase game I can’t wait for.”

As the former Manchester United man mentions, up next for Spurs is a trip to face fierce rivals Arsenal in the North London Derby, who kept their unbeaten start intact with a narrow victory against Everton on Sunday. That clash will certainly be a true test of Tottenham’s improvements and preparations in the coming days are sure to be intense ahead of the trip to Emirates Stadium.
While Postecoglou is likely already adhering to Neville’s suggestion of not getting carried away, the Tottenham boss insisted supporters should feel the opposite and allow their minds to wander over the thought of trophy success. “No, no, no, let them go, let them enjoy it,” he said to SpursTV when asked if it was his job to manage expectations. “I’ve said this before, my role is not to burst peoples’ bubbles. Let them get excited and ahead of themselves, that’s the beauty of being a supporter.
“They go through enough pain, let them enjoy and if they think we’re going to be world-beaters great, it’s then up to us to match those expectations. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and they can enjoy it anyway they want to.”
