Gary Lineker really irritated after what he keeps hearing about 25-year-old Liverpool player

Gary Lineker has admitted that he gets irritated when he hears Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold’s being criticised over his defending.

The England international was the hero for the Reds this weekend as the 25-year-old scored the winning goal to secure all three points for Liverpool against Fulham in dramatic fashion.

Having snatched a draw for Liverpool against Manchester City a week prior, Alexander-Arnold is in fine form, with Lineker now praising the defender via The Rest is Football.

However, the Match of the Day pundit also took time to vent his frustration over criticisms that Alexander-Arnold is a bad defender, despite playing at right-back his entire senior career.

Lineker said: “He is a wonderful footballer. I mean, I have been a fan of his for many years. Everyone knows that, in fact from the first few times I saw him I used to think he has got to be a midfield player and I think he was a youngster. It was one of those situations where they see a talent and they think we will get him in the team but you can’t get him in his position.

“He ends up going to right-back and he was so good for so long that he became a right-back. It irritates me a little bit when people say he’s not very good at defending and every slight error or any goal that goes in on that side of the pitch against Liverpool.

“People have a pop at him but I think the positives of his forward play and his passing, I think he is certainly the best passer of the ball in the English game at the moment. And probably in a much bigger area than that, maybe even Europe. His range of passing, outside the foot, inside the foot, long passes and short passes and crosses, of course.

“But I’m loving him in this new role where he drifts into midfield. Gareth Southgate has tried him in midfield as well and I think that could work for England, alongside Rice, as Gareth likes to play two and you could play Bellingham in front of them.”

Alexander-Arnold and his defending being mocked seems to have been around ever since the fullback ever broke into the Liverpool first-team set-up.

Whilst there’s no denying that the England international needs to do some work on the defensive side of hos game, this won’t stop Alexander-Arnold from being arguably the best right-back in Premier League history.

Indeed, the 25-year-old is a technical genius and is one of the most unique talents English football has seen in quite some years given his abilities on the ball.

And once Alexander-Arnold elevates his defensive capabilities, there’s no limit to how influential the right-back can become for Liverpool.

‘Eliminate that…’ – Stephen Warnock fumes at Liverpool player during first half v Fulham

Stephen Warnock was fuming with one Liverpool player during the first half of their Premier League clash against Fulham on Sunday.

The Reds twice took the lead in the opening 45 minutes through stunning goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alexis Mac Allister, only to gift the visitors two wholly preventable equalisers.

It wasn’t Caoimhin Kelleher or any of the defenders who drew the 41-year-old’s ire, though, with Darwin Nunez instead getting both barrels from the ex-Anfield defender

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live‘s match coverage, Warnock raged: “There has been a few times now that Nunez has thrown himself to the ground looking for a foul. Book him. We need to eliminate that from the game.”

Warnock is right to call out Nunez for his theatrics, which were seen just after the half-hour when he went down on the edge of the penalty area for what was dubbed ‘a pretty ridiculous dive’ in Sky Sports’ live web commentary (14:31).

The Liverpool number nine is a fantastic player who doesn’t need to be trying to con referees to try and win his team a spot kick, and we’d be livid if we saw that from anyone playing against the Reds.

Hopefully Jurgen Klopp has a word with the Uruguayan about such behaviour, and instead we see the best side of the 24-year-old, who’s already plundered seven goals this season prior to today’s match.
