Jurgen Klopp says Luis Diaz is ready to start as Liverpool publicly thanked the authorities in Colombia for engineering the safe return of the player’s father after nearly a fortnight as a hostage.

Diaz, who sat out two matches while his father was being held captive in his homeland, starts for the Reds at Toulouse as they look to secure qualification from Europa League’s Group E with a win on Thursday evening.

Luis Manuel Diaz was kidnapped on Saturday October 28 along with his wife, Clienis Marulanda, in their homeland by armed men on motorcycles.

Mrs Marulanda was found shaken but safe hours later but Mr Diaz remained with the kidnappers before a huge search and rescue mission involving well over 200 members of the police force was underway for close to a fortnight.

Rebel group the National Liberation Army of Colombia (ELN) were responsible for the kidnapping and the Colombian government had been locked in negotiations with the organisation to secure Mr Diaz’s safe release over the last week.

The father of the Liverpool forward was eventually brought back via helicopter before he was checked over by doctors following a harrowing ordeal.

Speaking ahead of the game on Thursday, Klopp said: “It looks like it is done but I am not the one for the news to be honest. It looks like Lucho is really happy [putting] thumbs up all of the time so it looks good, very, very good.

“But I am not the one to release anything. But timing-wise, yes, it couldn’t have been better. So if it is today then great, that is all I can say. We asked him [if he wanted to start], he wants to and he will.”

And in response to a statement from the Colombia national team’s official X account, Liverpool also paid tribute to those who returned Mr Diaz to his family after being kidnapped by the rebel group.

“We are delighted by the news of @LuisFDiaz19’s father’s safe return and we thank all those involved in securing his release.”

“The Colombian Football Federation thanks the National Government, the Military Forces and the National Police, as well as all the institutions and officials that made the release of Luís Manuel Diaz, father of our player Luis Diaz, possible,” read the message from Los Cafeteros’ official X account.

“Football as a sporting discipline symbolizes talent, dedication, teamwork and the intrinsic values of human beings. In Colombia it must continue to be a benchmark for entertainment, healthy competition, unity and joy.

“Therefore, we insist on the need to maintain this activity, as well as those who are involved in it, in the sporting and administrative part and their families, outside of any scenario other than sports.

“Behind a ball, the dreams and illusions of boys and girls, young people, women, men and adult soccer players, their loved ones and an entire country roll. Football is passion in peace. Let no one ever think of attacking that reality again!”

Liverpool may be the mystery side trying to sign 20-year-old son of former Real Madrid player
Thu 9 November 2023 15:30

Liverpool may be the mystery Premier League side taking a look at signing Argentinos Juniors youngster Federico Redondo.

The Reds are in the market for a defensive midfielder at the moment, with Fluminense’s Andre the leading candidate over recent months.

But after news filtered through yesterday that Liverpool are unlikely to pull the trigger on Andre, other options are now being put forward. And according to Brazilian journalist Emmanuel Luiz, one of those options may be Redondo. This is what he told The Redmen TV on Wednesday.

“I will tell you what I know about Federico Redondo, he’s from Argentinos Juniors,” says the reporter. “Fluminense are looking at him to be the replacement of Andre. Maybe it’s only the manager of the athlete that’s saying this, but clubs in the [Premier League] big six are looking at Redondo to buy him right now, maybe loan him.

“What they were telling me, if Fluminense sells Andre they have a big chance of getting Redondo. But clubs like Fulham, Wolves are looking to maybe get Redondo right now. Clubs like Liverpool, Tottenham, I don’t know which club from the big six, but they are looking at him too.

“My feeling is that Liverpool will hire a defensive midfielder from South America. The biggest three names that we have right now are Andre, Federico Redondo and [Gabriel] Moscardo from Corinthians.”

Redondo an option for Liverpool
It’s interesting that Liverpool are looking to South America for their next defensive midfield star. Of course, their former destroyer – Fabinho – was from the continent and maybe they want to emulate that success.

At the moment, it’s hard to ignore that the best, and most developed, of that bunch is clearly Andre.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Now a Copa Libertadores winner and a full Brazil international, the 22-year-old looks ready for his move to Europe.

If Liverpool decide not to follow through on a move to sign him, it makes you wonder why they’d feel Redondo or Moscardo are any more suitable.

Nevertheless, there is clearly a very talented player in Redondo. His father, Fernando, was a silky smooth deep-lying playmaker for Real Madrid, AC Milan and Argentina. With those genes, Federico is worth keeping an eye on.

Early signs are that the young man has some of the qualities of his father. However, with less than 60 games under his belt for Argentinos Juniors, it’s hard to ascertain his true level.

Should Liverpool feel he has the capacity to develop into a top player though, they shouldn’t hang around.

Redondo comes from the same academy that bore Alexis Mac Allister. If there’s a chance Federico has similar talent, the Reds shouldn’t hesitate.

Liverpool ace Luis Díaz’s father is reportedly close to being freed by his captors after police in Colombia confirmed the ‘release process’ is underway.

Colombian radio station LA FM said Luis Manuel Diaz will first be transported to the Colombian city of Valledupar. From there, he’ll be taken back to Diaz’s hometown of Barrancas, where he and his wife were first abducted last month.

It was confirmed last week that the Colombian terrorist group, Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional (ELN), were responsible for Diaz Sr’s kidnapping from a Barrancas petrol station on October 28. Diaz’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was also abducted in the same incident, though she was rescued the following day while her partner remained captive.

But more than a week after the Colombian military ignited a ‘major search’ for Diaz’s dad, the pair are set to be reunited. That’s if local reports in Colombia and Venezuela are to be believed regarding recent developments.

The ELN have been in contact with authorities since their part in the kidnapping was uncovered. That includes communication with Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro, though it was briefly feared a breakdown in the channels may have resulted in any chances of retrieval being spoiled.

Developments over a release come after Diaz made an emotional return to Liverpool’s squad over the weekend. The winger came off the bench to score a much-needed equaliser at Luton Town, revealing a message on his undershirt that read: “Libertad Para Papa (Freedom for Papa).”

That display only heightened awareness around the kidnapping, which had already become a global headline. And if all goes to plan, ‘Mane Diaz’ could be free ‘in a matters of hours’.

LA FM added the detail that Diaz will reportedly be handed over to a representative of the Catholic church when he is taken to Valledupar. Previous reports indicated the ELN had initiated plans to release Diaz Sr before it emerged those claims were ‘plagiarism’ and not entirely accurate.

Liverpool ace Diaz will hope the plans prove genuine on this occasion, with dozens of family members and friends gathered in Barrancas anticipating his return. Meanwhile, it’s uncertain whether Diaz will have any part in Jurgen Klopp’s squad for Thursday’s Europa League clash against Toulouse.

Roberto Firmino claims £34m Liverpool player used to frustrate everyone by not passing
Thu 9 November 2023 10:30
James Brooke
Roberto Firmino has admitted that Liverpool players used to get frustrated over Mohamed Salah’s refusal to pass the ball.

Since his £34m arrival at Anfield, Salah has often been highlighted as being a slightly greedy player, focused solely on getting goals for himself.

Although this is perhaps slightly unfair, Firmino has suggested that this view extended to the Egyptian’s teammates. In an excerpt from his new book published in The Guardian today, the Brazilian outlined how Salah’s greediness used to annoy those sharing a pitch with him.

“I don’t know if he was aware of it or not, but Salah used to frustrate everyone when he didn’t pass the ball,” Bobby says.

“I knew how to handle that situation better than most. Klopp addressed this issue in front of all of us: when a teammate was in a better position, the ball had to be passed. It was a clear hint aimed at Salah.

“Over the years, I must say, this aspect of his game improved significantly. He gradually learned to be less selfish and more cooperative – notwithstanding the fact that he is a striker, a goalscorer, and every goalscorer tends to be a bit ‘greedy’ in the pursuit of a goal. That’s normal.”

Firmino spills the tea
Firmino’s admission is made with one key incident in mind – Sadio Mane’s outburst towards Salah during a 3-0 win over Burnley in 2019.

Although it was a game which Liverpool won comfortably, Mane was angry with the Reds’ No.11 for failing to play him in when well-placed.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
From then on, relations between the two forwards often appeared frosty.

Commenting on that, Firmino claims that he often held discussions with Mane about Salah, offering ways to help the Senegalese relax.

“Mane was more intense in both good and bad moments,” says the former Red.

“He was the most explosive of the three of us and he was also the person with whom I had the most freedom to discuss this issue. I was always talking to him, giving advice, trying to calm him down. I would tell him to find peace, play for the team, and stay relaxed.”

In the end, Salah’s ‘greediness’ can perhaps be seen as a lack of maturity. As the Egyptian has grown older, he’s become not only a goal-scorer, but a goal creator.

Yes, he is still a touch selfish at times, but he wouldn’t get the goals he does without that streak. Now though, his nose for goal is complimented by an incredible and surprising creative streak. If only Mane and Firmino were still here to reap the benefits of that.
