Lionel Messi has one more award he is yet to win ahead of an expected eighth Ballon d’Or.

Inter Miami star Messi is the favourite to win his eighth Ballon d’Or award in Paris later in the month after enjoying a stellar year.

The 36-year-old played a key role as he inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar.

Messi also enjoyed a decent season with Paris Saint Germain before ditching European football for MLS side Inter Miami this summer.

Throughout his illustrious career, Messi has won countless individual awards and broken records left, right and centre.

However, there is one award that he has so far failed to win, the Golden Foot.

The Golden Foot has been around for 20 years, and previous winners include a whole list of football legends, but the list is missing one name.

ADVERT
To win the award, you have to be over the age of 28 to be in contention, and it is an award that can only be won once.

It is given to the best player in the calendar year voted by journalists, and previous winners include Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Luka Modric and Ronaldinho.

In 2022, the award went to Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski.

After receiving the award, the Polish striker said: “I’m very happy, I’m very proud. For me, it’s a huge honour to win this award because I know how hard I’ve had to work for this and now I can be proud of myself.

“If you see the list of the names, the winners of this trophy, it makes me even more proud.”

Messi will be hoping to finally get his hands on the Golden Foot but will face tough competition from the likes of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Lionel Messi has been tipped to win this year’s Ballon d’Or by Manchester City midfield Rodri despite the goals scored by teammate Erling Haaland.

Haaland scored 52 goals in a breathtaking debut season for City, helping them to a historic treble win.

He shattered records aplenty after joining from Borussia Dortmund and his season finished with Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners’ medals.

Rodri was the man who scored the goal to deliver City’s first Champions League against Inter Milan in Istanbul.

The former Atletico Madrid midfielder will likely be in the top ten after a stunning season but he doesn’t believe Haaland will scoop the gong.

As per El Partidazo de COPE, Rodri said: “Who’s going to win the Ballon d’Or. For me, I think Lionel Messi is going to win it.”

Spanish outlet SPORT have already claimed that Messi will scoop the gong for the eighth time after finally winning the World Cup with Argentina.

The winner will be announced at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on October 30 in a ceremony hosted by Didier Drogba.

Messi is in line to make history in becoming the first player outside of Europe to win the award, following on from his switch to MLS side Inter Miami in the summer.

The 36-year-old is the clear favourite after a glittering World Cup tournament where he bagged seven goals and won the Golden Ball.

As good a year as Haaland had, even his Norway coach Stale Solbakken doesn’t think he will win.

In September, he explained to Norwegian outlet VG: “If you ask me who I think will win, I will say Messi will win it thanks to his World Cup triumph. It still has an impact.”

Messi, meanwhile, is not too fussed over what the outcome is – with seven already in his impressive collection.

On the award, he commented: “If it arrives, good, and if not, nothing happens. I was lucky to achieve all my goals in my career and now I have new goals with this club.”

Lionel Messi’s desire to win his eighth Ballon d’Or has lessened since winning the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

The football icon is a favourite to win this year’s top individual award, however, his focus has shifted since his World Cup triumph.

The former Barcelona star has the highest amount of Ballon d’Or victories in history, but speaking in his first press conference since becoming an Inter Miami player, it’s clear his view on the award has changed.

In the past, Messi has acknowledged the importance of the individual accolade in his career, but he admits now he has transitioned to caring more about team performance.

He told reporters: “I have said it many times, the Ballon d’Or is very important due to the recognition at an individual level, but I never gave it importance.

“The most important thing for me was always the awards at the group level.

“I was lucky to have achieved everything in my career and after the World Cup, I’m thinking about that award much less, my biggest award was that and I’m disguising my moment.

ADVERT
“If it arrives, good, and if not, nothing happens. I was lucky to achieve all my goals in my career and now I have new goals with this club.”

If the Argentinian were to win the award he would be the first to take home the honour while playing for a side outside of Europe.

He recently joined David Beckham and Jorge Mas-owned Inter Miami in the United States.

Since joining up with his new team he has scored nine goals in six appearances with his side set to play in the Leagues Cup final this weekend.

The Argentine admitted that he and his family are enjoying their new life.

As per TyC Sports, Messi said: “We are still finishing getting settled, we arrived in Miami a month and a half ago.

“We still don’t have the house which we are going to live in, but it was very easy to choose [Miami].

ADVERT
“We were convinced to come to this place and the people made it very easy, both at the club since we arrived and the fans or the people I meet on the street.

“The city is spectacular and makes it possible for you to live the day quietly and very easily. The children start school soon. While there is little left [to do], it was easier than we thought. It had been complicated [moving] from Barcelona to Paris.”

Messi faces competition for the Ballon d’Or largely from Manchester City players thanks to their historic treble-winning season.

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are high up on the list, however, after Messi secured the World Cup in December, it seems only right the award heads his way.

Pep Guardiola gave a brilliant answer when asked whether Erling Haaland deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.

During what was a stunning first season with City, Norwegian superstar Haaland scored 52 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions.

After playing a vital role in helping City win a historic treble, Guardiola was asked whether Haaland deserves to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of Lionel Messi. You can watch the footage below.

The City boss was asked: “I know you’re not a fan of individual awards in football but in 10 days we have the Ballon d’Or and there are two incredible stories.

“Messi with Argentina and Haaland here with the treble, if you had a vote, who would you vote for?”

Guardiola replied: “Hahaha. You are so funny.

“I’ve always said, the Ballon d’Or has to be two sections. One for Messi, and after look for the others. So, Haaland should win – Yes. We won the treble and he scored 50 million goals. The worst season of Messi is the best for the rest.”

He added: “They both deserve it so what can I say?”
