‘Far too strong’… Tim Sherwood says he can only see one team winning in Man City vs Liverpool

Tim Sherwood has said that Liverpool have no chance of beating Manchester City tomorrow.

After the two sides won their respective midweek European games, they are now preparing to face off against each other at Anfield for their latest Premier League meeting.

Despite both teams currently fighting to win the title, one pundit and former top-flight manager has claimed that only one side have a chance of walking away with all three points on this occasion.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Sherwood had this to say about tomorrow’s big game.

He said: “I don’t see Liverpool winning the game tomorrow, I really don’t. I think Man City’s midfield is far too strong for Liverpool’s at the moment.

MORE MAN CITY STORIES
“They need Mo Salah fit, if Mo Salah’s not fit and doesn’t play 90 minutes in this game or doesn’t start the game I don’t see them winning.

“I see Man City dominating the ball in the midfield areas, the likes of Rodri, [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Phil] Foden at the moment – just incredible, probably the form player in the Premier League at the moment.”

Even though Liverpool are above City in the table and have scored more goals and conceded fewer than City this season, it’s interesting to hear that Sherwood doesn’t think they’ll win, in addition to the fact that they have a very good record against the Manchester club at Anfield.

Interestingly, with Sherwood suggesting City will win the midfield battle on this occasion, they have had more touches in the midfield third of the pitch (10088) than any other side in the league this season.

However, only Bournemouth (193) have made more tackles in the midfield third than Liverpool (191) have in this campaign, which suggests that this may not be as big a problem for them as Sherwood thinks it could be.

‘Really, really fast’… Mohamed Salah says Liverpool have a ‘unique’ player who is lightning quick

Liverpool are going to have to be at their best to take points from Manchester City tomorrow.

After Arsenal’s win over Brentford this evening, the Reds are no longer sitting top of the Premier League table. The only way to claim back their spot at the summit is to beat City at Anfield.

Thankfully, Liverpool are in fine form and have a great record against the champions on their home patch. They are also able to call on one of the best players in the division right now: Darwin Nunez.

Nunez has scored in each of the past four matches, netting a late winner against Nottingham Forest last time out. And speaking via liverpoolfc.com about the Uruguayan today, Mohamed Salah shared his thoughts on what Darwin brings to Liverpool.

“Kind of a different player,” says the Reds Egyptian King. “We never had that quality before [that] he loves to run in the space. He doesn’t like the ball much in his feet, which is unique [and] he’s really, really fast. He keeps looking at me because he knows I can get him the ball easily in the space and he can finish the situation.

“His numbers this season are improving a lot, which is great for us. I always try to watch him in training and try to watch the other guys, to be fair.”

Salah praises Nunez speed
Undoubtedly one of the things which makes Nunez most dangerous is his electric pace.

Liverpool have had quick forwards over the years. Salah himself was a real livewire in his younger years – and still is – while Sadio Mane was similarly pacy on the opposite flank.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
But quick though they were, neither Salah nor Mane could match the sheer speed of Nunez in full flight.

It isn’t just his quickness across the ground which frightens defenders, though. No opposition side want to play against the 24-year-old because he’s always, always in the game.

Pace is one thing, but you’ve got to know when to use it. Nunez does. He’s become smarter in where to press opponents and no longer chases lost causes.

His finishing can at times be erratic but the fact that he’s able to get in positions that few other forwards can means that he’ll usually get another chance.

In terms of the City game, Nunez may actually be the ultimate weapon for Liverpool.

According to Steve McManaman, staff at Anfield have been talking the No.9 up in the lead up to the game. Given the way that City like to dominate the ball and attack, they do often leave spaces at the back. This could be perfect for Nunez to exploit.

Beyond that, you just get the feeling that the former Benfica striker is waiting to go up yet another notch. Regardless of what happens tomorrow, Liverpool have a striker who’s going to cause problems for years.

The two titans, Liverpool and Manchester City, will lock horns at Anfield Stadium in the Premier League this weekend. Both sides will give their everything and leave no stone unturned to grab the win. The much-awaited game could turn out to be a domestic title decider. The high intensity of the battle will make it a must-watch for the viewers.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: Talking Tactics
Jurgen Klopp will field a traditional 4-3-3 formation and ask his men to maintain the formation throughout the game. They will try to keep possession of the ball and supply to the wingers to either cut in or provide crosses to create goal-scoring chances. Off the ball, Liverpool will try to overload the defensive line and leave no gaps to exploit.

Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, will order his side to play with a high backline. They enjoy the possession of the ball and will overload players in the midfield. City will try to move the ball quickly and produce some moments of magic apart from feeding Erling Haaland in the middle.

Jurgen Klopp could start ‘super-talented’ 21-year-old for Liverpool v Man City

With Klopp set to leave Anfield in summer, a 20th Premier League title would be the ideal send-off for the Liverpool manager. Victory on Sunday would put them a step closer to that.

However, City have history-making designs of their own. They would become the first team in English history to win four top-flight titles in a row should they triumph this season.

Although Mohamed Salah is set to return for Liverpool, there is still one major injury doubt, namely Ibrahima Konate.

Klopp provided an update on Konate’s situation in Friday’s press conference ahead of the match, admitting the centre-back will need a scan.

He said, as per the Liverpool website: “Ibou was rather positive last night [Thursday], he thought he made the right decision in the right moment saying it’s better I go [off].

“But how we know, that doesn’t mean a lot unfortunately. He will get scanned, definitely, [but] so far I don’t have the results of that. All the others are fine.”

Jarell Quansah could step in for Liverpool
Should Konate be unavailable for the game, Liverpool could potentially turn to Jarell Quansah alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The 21-year-old has risen through the Reds ranks over the past 15 years, going on to shine for the Under-21s before making his debut in August last year.

That seems like such a long time ago now, as he has made himself at home in the Liverpool first-team. He has made 22 competitive appearances for the Reds.

Quansah is a “super-talented” player who has more than proven himself for the Reds at the highest level this season.

Robbie Earle, speaking about Quansah, told The 2 Robbies podcast last month: “He looks like he’s got all the things that you would want for a top-class centre-back.

“Good size, good pace, good mobility, decent on the ball. Bit of presence about him.

“And he’s one of those who I don’t ever see too much drama around him, or poor decisions. He looks like a 26, 27-year-old who’s come in the team.”

City would be a huge test for him, but what better way to rubber-stamp his credentials as a bona fide Premier League star than against the very best?

Liverpool revealed as only club close to signing attacking midfielder with €150m release clause

Liverpool have come ‘really close’ to completing the signing of Georgiy Sudakov from Shakhtar Donetsk despite a six-way battle unfolding for the attacking midfielder, a report has explained.

Sudakov signed a new contract with Shakhtar last month, meaning he is now protected by a €150m release clause (equivalent to £127.7m), but various clubs across Europe have been queuing up for the 21-year-old.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are the ‘only’ suitors to have come ‘really close’ to signing Sudakov so far, having recently been paying a lot of attention to the evolution of their midfield.

If Sudakov is still on Liverpool’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window – and the implication is that he is, despite their recruitment team and manager changing – they will face plenty of competition for him.

The Italian report claims Juventus and Napoli are interested in the playmaker, but there is an awareness that he might be beyond reach for Italian teams.

More likely contenders for his signature could include Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in addition to presumably the leading admirers, Liverpool.

And that kind of move could appeal to Sudakov, who has admitted his ambition is to arrive in one of Europe’s top five leagues. Speaking to Sport Italia, he has cited the Premier League as one of the most ‘incredible’.

Liverpool or Manchester City could become the ultimate destination, then, but he may have to be patient since his new deal is due to last until 2028.

Liverpool revealed as only club close to signing attacking midfielder with €150m release clause

Liverpool have been closely linked with a Shakhtar star

How has Sudakov been doing for Shakhtar?
Since progressing from the Shakhtar academy into their first team, Sudakov has scored and assisted 14 goals each within 90 appearances (15 of which have come in the Champions League).

Comfortable on either foot, he tends to operate in behind a striker, but can feature in a more orthodox central midfield role or even wide on the left.

Whether there is still room for him at Liverpool will depend on how their system changes under a new manager next season, following the summer resignation of Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool’s midfield welcomed in Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai last summer. If there is room for another addition, it might realistically be a more defensive midfielder than Sudakov, but only time will tell.

It is worth noting that Sudakov is unlikely to cost the full value of his release clause. A fee of €150m seems ambitious for a player with his relatively limited experience, but will mainly be there to protect Shakhtar.

It could also be a sign of how strongly they believe in Sudakov’s potential, which could lead to him stepping up to a club of Liverpool’s level in the long term.
