Fabrizio Romano drops big update on Newcastle and Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United are reportedly just a few days away from tying Bruno Guimaraes down to a new contract

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who took to X with a follow-up update on his exclusive Magpies update last weekend.

A week ago, the transfer insider declared “here we go” on Newcastle agreeing a new deal with Guimaraes.

Romano said the new deal would be valid until the summer of 2028 and included a release clause in the region of £100million.

The Italian reiterated this in his latest update, adding that “it’s just a matter of days” now to get through all the formalities.

Our view

Guimaraes was one of the first players through the door at Newcastle following their long-awaited takeover.

He was somewhat of a pioneer, having been linked with clubs that, at the time, were in and around European or title contention.

Meanwhile, Newcastle were battling relegation. Indeed, things were pretty bad at the time.

However, Guimaraes helped the Magpies survive and, from then on, they’ve been on a stratospheric trajectory.

Newcastle are now in the Champions League and will fancy their chances of winning silverware this season.

They came close last term, getting to the Carabao Cup final. This time round, they beat Manchester City in the third round.

Things are going well for Newcastle and Guimaraes has been one of the catalysts for their success thus far.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted he would sign for Manchester City if he was still playing thanks to the quality of chances they create.

Shearer boasts one of the best goalscoring records of any striker in the world and remains the current Premier League top goalscorer with 260 strikes to his name. Having impressed with Southampton and Blackburn Rovers, the 53-year-old famously turned down Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson to sign for his hometown club where he scored 206 goals in 405 appearances.

However, in the latest episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer was asked which club, past or present, he would sign for if he was in his prime. Without hesitation, the Englishman quickly explained his reasoning for choosing City.

“Man City [because] goals, goals, goals,” he said. “I mean you are just guaranteed goals.

“You look at [Erling] Haaland now, he is a magnificent player no doubt about it, but the chances that he gets, the goals he scores and even the chances that he misses sometimes, which is fine because you have to get in there, so I have to say Man City because you are guaranteed goals and success.”

Both Gary Lineker and Micah Richards joined Shearer on the podcast and agreed they would choose City too. But to give alternative responses, Lineker chose Pep Guardiola’s 2010s Barcelona team while the Blues’ former full-back decided on Arsenal’s Invincible team having grown up supporting the Gunners.
