West Ham United playmaker Lucas Paqueta wants to rubber-stamp his London Stadium departure when the transfer window reopens

HIGHLIGHTS
West Ham United talisman Lucas Paqueta is eager to join Manchester City after the Premier League title-chasers are preparing to reignite their interest.
The Brazilian came close to completing a switch to the Etihad Stadium before finding himself embroiled in an investigation less than 12 months ago.
West Ham are aware that they are facing an almost impossible task in their bid to keep Paqueta out of Manchester City’s clutches.
West Ham United are expecting Lucas Paqueta to head through the London Stadium exit door when the transfer window reopens in the summer as the Hammers’ talisman is eager to join Manchester City after being informed that the Premier League title-chasers are preparing to reignite their interest, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.

The east Londoners’ hopes of booking a fourth consecutive season in a European competition suffered a severe dent when they were consigned to a 5-0 thumping at the hands of capital rivals Chelsea last weekend, resulting in boss David Moyes questioning the mentality of his charges.

Julen Lopetegui is increasingly likely to replace the Scot in the dugout ahead of next term, having agreed a deal in principle after wanting to return to the Premier League following a previous spell at the helm of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Paqueta is on course to walk away from West Ham.

Hammers Realise it Will be Difficult to Keep Paqueta

West Ham have accepted that it will be almost impossible to keep Paqueta on their books heading into the 2024/25 campaign regardless of who is in the hot-seat, according to GMS sources, as they are on the brink of missing out on qualifying for a continental competition after dropping to ninth in the Premier League table.

The Brazil international was close to joining Manchester City after a £80million deal was agreed in principle in August, but the Sky Blues called the switch off after it emerged that he was at the centre of a Football Association investigation following allegations of betting breaches.

Despite being denied a move to the Etihad Stadium, Paqueta has gone on to chalk up 15 goal contributions in 41 appearances this season, and statistics highlight that he has been performing better in various metrics than when chief Pep Guardiola was willing to part with a significant sum for his services.

GMS sources have been told that the Spanish tactician’s admiration for the creative midfielder has never gone away, having also been described as ‘incredible’ by former West Ham teammate Declan Rice, and Manchester City are set to revive their interest in the coming weeks.

It is understood that there is a high probability of Paqueta joining the Sky Blues for a fresh challenge when the transfer window reopens during the summer as he has remained keen to link up with the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne for the next stage of his career.

GMS sources have been informed that Paqueta reacted well after his switch to Manchester City fell through during the early stages of the campaign, but he still likes the idea of being managed by Guardiola and battling for regular silverware after also winning the Europa Conference League during his time on West Ham’s books.

The 26-year-old became the most expensive acquisition in the Hammers’ history when he completed a £51million switch from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon in August 2022, and he has gone on to become a firm fans’ favourite at the London Stadium thanks to his skilful performances in claret and blue.

But West Ham could be left helpless in their attempts to keep Paqueta out of Manchester City’s clutches ahead of next season as he has a £85million release clause written into his contract, which allows him to pocket £150,000-per-week, and he will be entitled to hold negotiations over personal terms if his suitors meet that figure.

GMS sources recently revealed that last season’s Champions League winners are likely to sign the ex-AC Milan playmaker after wasting no time in setting their sights on going on a £200million spending spree despite still being in the thick of a Premier League title race with Arsenal.

Should we celebrate Erling Haaland for wearing pyjamas on a private jet?
Writers Amanda Platell and Alexandra Shulman weigh in on the debate
READ MORE: Traveller argues why you should ALWAYS wear Crocs on a flight
Money doesn’t come into it. Actually, it does, obviously, starting with the private jet, the flashy wristwatch, the designer sunglasses. And that’s before we get to the pyjamas.

But the question is whether it’s acceptable to wander through an airport in PJs. Is Erling Haaland, the Manchester City footballer, guilty of dragging us down a slippery slope in travel attire? Or should we celebrate his verve, his self-confidence, his fashion sense? Here are two contrasting views…

No, it’s slobbish, says Amanda Platell

He may earn almost £900,000 a week but turning up for a flight wearing £1,000 Dolce & Gabbana pyjamas shows that Erling Haaland has no class, even when he’s on a private jet to Monaco.

What’s more, he echoes a troubling trend whereby travellers increasingly appear at the airport looking like they’ve just fallen out of bed.

On a recent trip to Ibiza I couldn’t believe the state of my fellow passengers who had pitched up for the 6am flight. Yes, we all had to set our alarms for pre-dawn but, surely, out of sheer self-respect there’s time for a shower and a quick change into a clean outfit to travel in.

Why do people think it’s acceptable to look like an unwashed slob when those who are employed to check our tickets, serve us in duty free, prepare our full English breakfast and look after us on the plane are all dressed in their uniforms, neat as a pin.

It’s disrespectful to them and to yourself. Even for me, having travelled from here to Australia and back for 40 years on 20-hour flights, I wouldn’t dream of turning up in PJs, even if they were gold-encrusted.

I’m not saying we should go back to BOAC days when passengers dressed as if they were going to a smart dinner party (although that would be nice) but what’s wrong with a pair of Sweaty Betties and a loose top?

As it happens, as an experienced traveller on long and short haul flights, my preferred attire is a smart loose coat, scarf, jeans and a T-shirt, something I also feel comfortable in when turning up after the flight at a decent hotel.

Wearing PJs on planes is just naff.

Yes, they’re stylish, says Alexandra Shulman

Not long ago, I was advised by a travel PR that the first rule when it came to wangling upgrades was not to wear denim. I wonder if they’ve come on board with the news that pyjamas are now acceptable.

Or they are, if they’re the right kind of pyjamas because not all pyjamas are created equal. Erling Haaland, Manchester City’s platinum blond striker, definitely has a catwalk-worthy collection, including several pairs by the Italian design duo Dolce & Gabbana who led the movement in anytime, anyplace, anywhere pyjamas.

But he’s not alone in indulging in the appeal of this look. It’s no longer difficult for the rest of us to pull it off, meaning you can travel in the same sartorial comfort, even in seat 23D rather than the cream leather cocoon of the other kind of PJ (private jet). Pyjamas have appeared on the red carpet these days so there’s no reason to avoid them for travelling, but they must have a certain elan. They have, in other words, to be worn with confidence rather than as if the wearer forgot to set the alarm in time for check-in.

So pristine and crease-free colour or a bold print is the way to go. And they should not, under any circumstances, be that kind of pull-on jersey and sweatshirt style. Nor, heaven forbid, feature any kind of cartoon character.

Thought of as the modern two-piece they are simply a great plus when it comes to travelling in comfort.

So much better than being trussed up in a tight pair of trousers, leggings which are always a zero-style zone or shorts (particularly on men) which I find far more slobby than PJs.

Accessorised with styled hair (as Erling does), a pair of shades and some smart carry-on luggage, pyjamas are definitely a serious option for travel.

But when it comes to footwear, fluffy slippers are still very much a no-go area.

Erling Haaland laughed off Roy Keane’s criticism of his play and said he pays little notice to what ‘that man’ has to say.

Former United great Keane has an ugly history with the Haalands, having effectively ended the career of Alfie Haaland – Erling’s dad – when he was City captain in 2003 with an horrific challenge that he later admitted was pre-meditated to cause harm. Despite being one of the more positive voices around City in the media, Keane made headlines recently when he compared Haaland’s build-up play to that of a League Two player.

Haaland scored four against Wolves to race to 25 Premier League goals and 36 in all competitions in a season where he has missed two months with injury. The goals helped keep City on course for back-to-back doubles, and all but sealed consecutive top flight Golden Boots for the Norwegian.

Pep Guardiola had to calm Haaland when he was substituted with the No.9 annoyed at a lack of protection from officials during the game, but he had calmed down by the time he headed to the dressing room. Not even the mention of Keane’s criticism could draw a rise out of Haaland when he did his post-match interviews as he shrugged off the opinion.

“I don’t really care that much about that man, so that’s all right,” he told Norwegian broadcaster Viaplay

TRANSFERS20-year-old Manchester City midfielder to leave for FREE this summer – Bundesliga clubs circling for signaturePublished: 22:30 on May 2nd 2024 | Last Updated: 19:01 on May 2nd 2024By Freddie Pye

Manchester City are set to lose their highly-rated Academy midfield talent Josh Adam on a free transfer this summer, as clubs from across Europe circle for his signature.

The Scottish youth international first made the switch to the City Football Academy from Scottish Premier League giants Celtic in 2020 and has impressed coaching staff across age groups in various levels of the club’s youth system.

Such is the highly-rated nature of Josh Adam’s game that the versatile midfielder has often been asked to train with Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, and joined the Manchester City senior side as recently as Thursday ahead of the meeting with Wolves.

However, having spent the last two season’s operating under Brian Barry-Murphy within Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, Adam is now keen to take the leap into regular senior football, and as such moving away from the Etihad Stadium.

As per the information of Jack Gaughan, writing in the latest edition of MailSport’s Man City Notebook this week, Josh Adam is set to leave Manchester City on a free transfer at the end of the ongoing season.

It is stated that the 20-year-old midfielder wants to ‘challenge himself in the senior game’, and there is reportedly early interest from clubs in both the Bundesliga and Belgian Pro League, with Adam himself said to be ‘enthused’ at the prospect of moving out onto the continent.

Josh Adam’s father has already confirmed a move away from Manchester City, after he penned a heartfelt message on his personal social media channel at the back end of last month.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Allan Adam stated, “Good luck today son in your last game for Man City. Been a quick four years.”

Elsewhere and Manchester City’s hunt for the next best talent in the youth football scene continues, as they expect to welcome senior Brazil international winger Savio to the Etihad Stadium this summer from Troyes and an excellent loan spell with Girona.

Pep Guardiola calls 20-year-old Man City youngster up to first-team training ahead of Wolves clash
Thu 2 May 2024 11:00
Srinivas Sadhanand
Pep Guardiola has called up a certain Manchester City youngster to first-team training ahead of his side’s clash against Wolves.

Ultimately, for a young player to be involved in training with City’s senior team must be an enthralling experience for several reasons.

Firstly, to have been given a chance to train in and amongst the first-team must be a matter of pride for a young prospect, as Manchester City are one of the biggest clubs in the entirety of football.

To add to that, learning first-hand from Pep Guardiola could be as eye-opening an experience as a youngster can muster in their career.

The Catalan boss has managed to reinvent players in their mid to late twenties, such as Fabian Delph and John Stones to name a few.

As a result, Guardiola has the ability to enlighten players about the game in a way few managers can.

20-year-old City youngster spotted in training ahead of Wolves clash
Any young player would perhaps be stunned by how the £378,846-a-week man views the game as well as how he sets his side up in training.

In addition, training with such a star-studded group of players must be an honour for any youngster.

But it is key for the player in question not to be starstruck at all times.

Instead, the opportunity in place is to show whether they are ready to play first-team football.

Even so, just by watching players like Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias to name a few, perhaps even other superstars in world football can learn so much.

From their training regimes to watching them play up close.

As Manchester City prepare to face Wolves on Saturday, Josh Adam was spotted on the club’s official website as a part of the winning team in training.

The 20-year-old was in the same team as the likes of Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, John Stones, Jeremy Doku, Nathan Ake, Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Rico Lewis, Nico O’Reilly and Scott Carson.

Josh Adam certainly must have learned a lot from especially the senior players in his team, as Manchester City seemed hard at work ahead of their contest against Wolves.

The City youngster, 20 is a midfielder by trade, who is known for his technical ability and creativity.

Adam is an advanced midfielder, who was signed by the club from Celtic in 2020.

Best time for Josh Adam to be a part of first-team training
It is one thing to train with the first-team during the first couple of months.

However, to watch, train and play alongside the Manchester City players when they are gearing up for a game that could decide their title fate against Wolves must have been an incredible experience for Josh Adam.

To witness the intensity with which Phil Foden and John Stones work behind the scenes ahead of a massive game must have been an eye-opening experience for the Scotsman.

Josh Adam would have taken away loads of lessons on how to train and play as his Manchester City side would be hoping to beat Wolves on the weekend.
