Liverpool are eyeing a summer deal for Southampton star Duje Caleta-Car

According to Fichajes, Premier League giants Liverpool are interested in securing a summer deal for Southampton star Duje Caleta-Car.

The Croatian international moved to St Mary’s in the summer of 2022 but has enjoyed a mixed season. He has impressed in moments but it has come few and far between as the Saints suffered relegation.

However, Caleta-Car has caught the attention of Liverpool who are in the market for a defender ahead of the upcoming summer. The Reds need an infusion of youth and the 26-year-old is a name under consideration.

Ibrahima Konate is likely to be a long-term fixture in the Reds’ backline but the same cannot be said of others in the squad. Virgil van Dijk has lost his edge while Joel Matip is likely to be sold in the summer. Joe Gomez has also struggled to impress and is another player who isn’t ready to become a regular starter.

Jurgen Klopp’s summer expenditure is largely expected to be concentrated in midfield, with the defence taking an important but secondary priority. Available for around €10 million, he represents a financially solid investment that could be well worth the risk.

Liverpool are not the only team in the fray and Southampton will hope that it can lead to a bidding war. The Saints have lost several players to the Reds in recent years and will loathe losing another for a pittance. With a return to the Premier League on their minds, the St Mary’s outfit will be wary of a summer exodus.

The Reds are well aware of Caleta-Car’s talents having come close to signing him in the winter of 2021. While the player was keen, Liverpool and Olympique de Marseille failed to reach an agreement as the talks broke down.

The Croatian international is not likely to become a regular starter at Anfield and it can be argued that the Reds could do with a player of a higher calibre. With Van Dijk regressing, bringing in an elite centre-back is more of a necessity and the sooner the club does so, the better

‘Actually’: Pundit tells £50m player not to join Liverpool, amid reports

TalkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has said that he does not want Mason Mount to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and wants the midfielder to sign a new contract with Chelsea.

The Rangers legend has said on talkSPORT that he would like Mount to put pen to paper on a new deal with Chelsea and stay at the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners.

The Mirror have reported that Liverpool are favourites to sign England international midfielder Mount in the summer transfer window for £50 million.

The Daily Mail have reported that Liverpool have made the midfielder a “prime target” in the summer transfer window.

Mount and Chelsea reportedly cannot agree on a new deal.

Liverpool target Mason Mount told to stay at Chelsea

McCoist said when asked if Mount should stay at Chelsea, as transcribed by TBR: “I would, actually. He’s kind of lost his way a little bit.

“Which is A) understandable and B) acceptable, in a club that’s completely lost their way.

“It’s natural that younger players are going to suffer from it and maybe not fight their way through it.

“Once Pochettino or whoever comes in steadies the ship a little bit, I would like to see Mason Mount still at Chelsea. Of course I would, yes.”

In our view, Mason Mount has a big decision to make in the summer of 2023.

Chelsea and Liverpool are massive and comparable clubs, so leaving the Blues for the Reds would be a sideways move for the Englishman.

Both Chelsea and Liverpool challenge for the Premier League title on a regular basis.

And both feature in the UEFA Champions League on a consistent basis.

Mount has to make sure that if he stays at Chelsea, then he gets the deal that he deserves.

If the Englishman does switch to Liverpool, then he has to get some kind of assurance that he will stand a good chance of playing regularly for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
