‘Disturbs me’… Jaap Stam says Liverpool fans have got something totally wrong about Istanbul

Former AC Milan defender Jaap Stam has opened up on the 2005 Champions League final loss to Liverpool.

The final in Istanbul is perhaps the greatest Europe’s premier club competition has ever seen. With the Reds 3-0 down at half-time to a super Milan team, things looked done and dusted. But led by Steven Gerrard, Liverpool famously roared back.

The comeback was made all the more impressive given the gap in quality between the squads of the two teams. But asked on the Stick To Football podcast whether Milan underestimated the Reds, Stam – who played at centre-back for Milan that day – refuted the suggestion.

“When you played in a Champions League final you would normally expect probably stronger opposition in some ways, we had only finished fifth in the Premier League. You must have been supremely confident,” asked Jamie Carragher, who was in the Liverpool XI.

“I think that’s a bit how Liverpool fans approach the story from your point of view,” replied the 51-year-old. “In terms of maybe we think Liverpool is a weaker side or a have weaker players. That is not how we approached it. We approached that game very professionally, as you might think, with all the players in that team, all the ability in that team, all them know exactly what can happen in football.

“So if you are a young player and you are looking at team sheets, then you can think okay we are going to beat them. But an experienced player who had been playing so many years at the top level is not going to think going into a game and underestimate the opposition. So, our meeting with our manager, Carlo Ancelotti, we never did that.”

Stam makes Istanbul claim
Over the years, the final in Istanbul has of course passed into legend. One of the stories of that day is how the Milan players believed their job to be done with the score-line at 3-0.

Gerrard famously took issue with what he saw as disrespect from midfielder Gennaro Gattuso in particular heading into the dressing rooms at half-time.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
However, although this is an accepted version of events from a Liverpool perspective, Stam has strongly refuted that anything of the sort happened.

“Even during, there has been talks I have heard and it really disturbs me, half-time people are saying we were already celebrating and stuff like that,” says the Dutchman. “Can you imagine players of this level going into a dressing room? Okay you’re 3-0 up but thinking we’re going to celebrate. It’s done.”

Jaap Stam
Time has a funny way of changing things in our minds. All of Gerrard, Carragher and Stam were there on May 25th 2005 and all of them will have seen similar things. But, funnily, they all seem to remember it differently.

In fairness to Stam, all of what he is saying makes total sense. Part of the reason why Liverpool felt they had little chance was because of the experience in the Rossoneri’s team. Players like Cafu, Paolo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo, Andriy Shevchenko and Stam himself had been there and seen it all. Why would they think the game was won?

But such occasions can also sometimes get the best of you. Gerrard was adamant that celebrations were heard from the Milan dressing room. That same group of players let a 3-0 lead slip. Something must have happened to them at half-time.

Whatever Stam says, it will never change the truth of the matter, anyway. This will always remain one of the greatest days in the history of Liverpool FC. And it will always sting for Milan.

Jurgen Klopp set to give “incredible” player another chance amid growing Liverpool problem

Liverpool are considering recalling Nat Phillips from his loan spell at Celtic following Joel Matip’s season-ending injury.

Matip suffered ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Liverpool’s 4-3 victory against Fulham earlier this month and faces a lengthy spell in the treatment room. The 32-year-old’s injury has forced Jurgen Klopp to review his options at centre-back.

Phillips famously helped Liverpool qualify for the Champions League during the 2020/21 campaign when Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all suffered serious injuries. The 26-year-old formed a brilliant partnership with Rhys Williams in Klopp’s back line.

Yet Phillips struggled for minutes after that season and joined Celtic on loan in August. The move hasn’t gone to plan, with Phillips struggling to impress the fans and spending much of his time on the bench. He started their 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Liverpool are weighing up whether to bring Phillips back to Merseyside in January. Another option is recalling Williams from his loan spell at Aberdeen. That move hasn’t worked out either, with the 22-year-old playing just 90 minutes of football this season.

Liverpool still have plenty of options at centre-back, with Van Dijk, Gomez and Ibrahima Konate all fit. Fans would also love to see Jarell Quansah given a run in the team. The 20-year-old defender is enjoying a breakthrough season, making 11 senior outings to date.

Yet recalling Phillips or Williams would be wise decision, as a full-blown injury crisis could develop at any stage. The two players may also be willing to return to Merseyside due to their challenging loan moves and Liverpool competing in lots of competitions.

Do you think Liverpool should recall Nat Phillips? Let us know in the comments below!

Klopp’s side have reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and progressed to the next stage of the Europa League. The latter is a competition they will be disappointed not to win. They are currently one point clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

Klopp is a big fan of Phillips and Williams, calling them “incredible” after their heroics three years ago. Liverpool plummeted down the table after losing six consecutive home Premier League games but won eight of their last 10 in the division to finish third.

Klopp said at the time: “These two boys, playing like that, it is incredible, absolutely incredible. That was a proper crash course in a Premier League education, and they have learned so much. It’s a sign for all our kids at Liverpool in the academy.

“It’s possible – it shows it’s possible… just work hard. These boys they are obviously not skilled like crazy, they had to work incredibly hard. And now they are proper, proper Premier League players. And that’s exactly how it can work. I am really happy for them.”

Liverpool fans will be fully aware that, despite a Europa League game up next, our upcoming Premier League match is against Manchester United at Anfield.

As we all hope that last season’s seven-goal embarrassment can be repeated, something else that might be is the chant that Bayern Munich fans were heard singing inside Old Trafford.

Ahead of the Champions League clash between the pair, the travelling German fans were captured singing: “You’re s**t, and you know you are!” to the fans of Erik ten Hag’s side.

Let’s hope that this is certainly the feeling that a stadium full of Kopites have, when the full-time whistle sounds on Sunday evening.

You can view the video of the Bayern fans via @SimonPeach on X:

Juventus are exploring alternative midfield options, with Teun Koopmeiners on their radar as a potential signing.

The pursuit comes as they are cautious about Kalvin Phillips potentially staying in the Premier League, particularly with interest from Newcastle United. With midfield challenges due to the absence of players like Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli, Juventus is keen to reinforce its midfield during the January transfer window.

While they had considered a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tottenham’s decision not to let him go has prompted Juventus to explore other midfield targets.

As Newcastle advances in talks for a possible loan deal with Kalvin Phillips, Juventus has shifted its attention to Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners as an alternative midfield option. The uncertainty around Phillips potentially staying in the Premier League has prompted Juventus to explore different options, with Koopmeiners emerging as a target for manager Max Allegri.

The midfielder could provide reinforcement for Juventus during the January transfer window.

The Dutch midfielder, valued at £55 million, is a target for both Juventus and Liverpool. However, the challenge for Juventus lies in negotiating with Atalanta, a direct rival, which may result in a higher transfer fee than the player’s market value, per Gazetta Dello Sport.

Koopmeiners has drawn interest from top clubs due to his performances and has earned 20 caps for the Dutch national team. He is a rare type of midfielder because he is quite versatile in what roles he can play – given the fact he’s excelled as a number six, eight and even as high up as a ten in some instances.

Premier League club take steps to stop their ‘outstanding’ player from joining Liverpool

Subhankar Mondal

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could struggle to sign Lloyd Kelly.

That is according to TEAMtalk, which has noted what Bournemouth’s plans are regarding Kelly.

So, what has been reported about Liverpool target Lloyd Kelly? Let’s take a look.

Liverpool face a problem in signing Lloyd Kelly
Well, according to TEAMTalk, Liverpool are interested in signing Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly. The report has noted that the defender is out of contract at the Cherries at the end of the season.

TEAMtalk has reported that Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United all are considering moves for Kelly, who was described as “an outstanding player” who has “got great potential” by then Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe in 2020.

Photo by Simon Stacpoole/Offside/Offside via Getty Images
Liverpool want to sign Kelly after the long-term injury suffered by Joel Matip. However, the Reds are not going to find it easy to get a deal done.

According to TEAMtalk, Bournemouth have offered Kelly “a club-record deal in a bid to persuade him to sign a new contract”. They do not want to sell him in the middle of the season and are ready to make him “their highest-paid player”

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
Liverpool should bid for Lloyd Kelly in January
In my view, if Liverpool are really keen on Lloyd Kelly, then they should make a bid for him in the January transfer window.

After all, what have they got to lose? Other clubs, such as Tottenham Hotspur, are keen on the defender as well. Arsenal have also been linked.

We should trust the Liverpool recruitment team on the homework they would have done on the 25-year-old.

If the former Premier League champions are convinced that the defender will make the first team better, then I do not see any reason why the Reds should not launch a bid for him in January.

Kelly has made 40 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The defender has given two assists and has kept eight clean sheets in those games.

Liverpool fans treated to news they’ve all been waiting for with journo’s latest update
NEWS

Liverpool fans will have been understandably concerned about the exact nature of Alexis Mac Allister’s injury in light of the troubling posts shared online.

The Argentine posted snaps of himself on crutches on Instagram, along with the following caption: “A recap of last week. I’m committed to my recovery and will do my best to be back soon. Thanks for your constant support!💪🏻🔴 @liverpoolfc #YNWA.”

Fears over the midfielder’s potential layoff period have fortunately been allayed by the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele on X (formerly Twitter).

Alexis Mac Allister’s injury is nothing to cause serious worry despite Instagram pictures of him on crutches and in a knee brace. Possibly very slightly worse than first feared but treatment programme is just to help reduce swelling and bad bruising. More @MailSport

— Lewis Steele (@LewisSteele_) December 12, 2023

It’s fair to say the former Brighton & Hove Albion man won’t be in the midweek squad to face his brother, Kevin, and Royal Union St. Gilloise in the final Europa League group stage clash.

Welcome news as injury list grows
Along with the sight of Thiago Alcantara returning to the AXA training centre, it’s the update that many fans will surely have been craving.

It remains to be seen exactly how long Mac Allister’s treatment programme will keep him sidelined, though it’s probably fair to assume he’ll also miss the weekend’s tie with Manchester United.

As long as we can have our No.10 back in the squad for our pivotal game against Arsenal, we’re happy.

‘Have a look at this’ – Howard Webb explains error in decision against Liverpool as VAR audio released
Liverpool came from behind to beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon

PGMOL chief Howard Webb and Michael Owen

Howard Webb believes the right decision was made to award Crystal Palace a penalty against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, though has admitted the match officials should have stopped the game far sooner.

The home side were given a spot-kick during the second half after VAR reviewed footage of a Jarell Quansah foul on Jean-Philippe Mateta inside the penalty area. This was reviewed as the match carried on following the incident, before play was eventually paused one minute and 45 seconds after the initial incident for referee Andy Madley to review the footage.

A check of the pitchside monitor from Madley followed and the eventual decision that followed was a penalty for Palace. PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) chief Webb agreed with this call, but conceded there should not have been a near two-minute delay for action to be taken.

Offering his view on the situation in the latest edition of ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’, he said: “I think that’s a very clear penalty-kick situation. It was not seen by the on-field referee in real time, and the VAR’s there to check for that significant contact by Quansah into the back of Mateta, who’s the only one to touch the ball.

READ MORE: I just got a glimpse of what Jurgen Klopp wished for – Manchester United won’t know what’s hit them

READ MORE: Premier League teams vote for major change to transfer rules after Chelsea exploit loophole

“Play continues, of course, because the referee waves away the penalty appeal. As the game’s continuing, the VAR is checking the angles available to see if there is that clear and obvious error, and recognises that there is one. You then hear him say to the referee, ‘I’m checking the APP [attacking phase of play].’ At that point, he’s already formed the opinion that he’s going to be sending the referee to the screen. But he needs to check the phase of play before the penalty to make sure that there’s no offside in the build-up, which would negate the award of the penalty, or another offence by the attacking team.

“I think a better way to do this would be to stop the game at that moment, as soon as the VARs recognise that a review is going to be needed for the penalty,” stressed Webb. “That stops anything else happening in the game, it gets us away from this feeling that it’s taking a long time to check this. And I think, going forward, that’s what we’d rather see – the game being stopped as soon as VAR recommends… or identifies a review is needed to be recommended. And then we send the referee to the screen while the APP’s being checked in that moment. It would make the process a bit more efficient.

“It’s described as significant contact in the calf by Quansah; it’s impactful. Mateta plays the ball, and yeah, a clear penalty, a clear and obvious error not to give the penalty. Sometimes, we’ll see contact less than that, that’s less impactful – it’s a bit of a sliding scale, but at some point, it’s going to be an offence, and this is certainly, in my opinion, one of those.”

Audio between the match officials regarding the penalty incident:

VAR: Possible penalty.

Ref: Don’t see anything there, I don’t see anything.

VAR: Just checking possible penalty.

Ref: Thanks mate.

VAR: The ball is played by the attacker, then the question is whether the extent of that contact sends him to ground, because I think he is kicked.

VAR: Have you got another angle?

RO (Replay Operator): Just looking for you now. This is probably going to be the best one, from this side.

VAR: You’ve got no other angle?

RO: I’ve got a slightly wider one I could show you at full speed, maybe?

VAR: Ok. Just go back to GDS. Just have a look at this. The attacker plays the ball. It’s that contact that kicks that right leg.

AVAR (Assistant VAR): Yeah.

VAR: What are you seeing?

AVAR: Yeah, exactly the same as that.

VAR: So I’m seeing the attacker play the ball and a significant kick to the calf, which sends him to ground.

AVAR: Yeah.

VAR: Do you agree?

AVAR: Yeah, I agree. He trips him. I mean, whether that then makes him go to ground but, agree.

VAR: Mads [Madley], stop the game, stop the game, stop the game. I’m going to recommend an on-field review for a potential penalty.

Ref: So I’m awarding a penalty and no further discipline, yeah? Happy with that?

VAR. Confirmed, confirmed.

Ref: Yeah, thank you. OK.

Liverpool get Andy Robertson fitness boost with expected return set
December 11, 2023
Jack Lusby
Andy Robertson is expected to make his return from a long-term shoulder injury in the New Year, with the Liverpool left-back making “daily progress” in recovery.

Robertson has been sidelined since mid-October after dislocating his shoulder in Scotland’s 2-0 loss to Spain, with his injury requiring surgery.

The 29-year-old has so far missed 12 games as he undergoes his rehabilitation, with Kostas Tsimikas stepping up in his absence along with Joe Gomez and Luke Chambers.

While he is due to miss the remainder of the year and therefore at least five more fixtures, Robertson is on course to make his comeback in January.

The Mail‘s Lewis Steele reports that the Scotland captain is “on schedule” to return next month, having already resumed running outdoors at the AXA Training Centre.

Robertson is said to be making “daily progress,” with his recovery work “split between treatment and strength work on the injured shoulder.”

Unsurprisingly, he is “not yet involved in contact training,” with any resumption of full training dependent on the strength of his repaired shoulder.

While a vague date of “next month” is reported, it may be safe to assume that Robertson will not be risked until after the winter break.

Liverpool play five more times in December and then have clashes with Newcastle in the Premier League on New Year’s Day and Arsenal in the FA Cup on January 7.

As it stands, there would then be two weeks before the trip to Bournemouth on January 21, which would allow Robertson longer to get up to speed.

That could be added to by progress in the Carabao Cup, though, with a potential semi-final set for the week commencing January 8.

Either way, unless there is a setback for Tsimikas or even Gomez or Chambers, Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to rely upon Robertson to start until he is fully fit.

Klopp already received a major injury boost last week when Alisson returned to full training and then made two crucial stops to help ensure Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

Alexis Mac Allister missed that clash with a knee problem but is not likely to be out for long, while Diogo Jota is stepping up his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Joel Matip will miss the remainder of the season after surgery on his ACL, and caution is being taken with both Thiago (hip) and Stefan Bajcetic (calf).

Man Utd ‘put five players up for sale’ as ruthless Erik ten Hag starts clearing the deck
Man Utd have reportedly put five players up for sale ahead of the January window.

Manchester United will reportedly listen to offers for five stars in the January transfer window as Erik ten Hag plans another major cull of his first-team squad. Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek have all been made available for a permanent transfer, it has been claimed.

TRENDING
United are reportedly wary that Financial Fair Play regulations mean they will need to offload players before they make any major additions to Ten Hag’s squad. However, it is reported that no player will be forced out of the club against their wishes.

Ten Hag will also not sanction any departures that weaken the squad. That could mean replacements will be eyed for anyone who leaves in January, despite the United boss downplaying the prospect of signings ahead of the winter market.

Offers for a quintet of stars will all be listened to ahead of the window, which will mark Ten Hag’s fourth as head coach at Old Trafford. A mass exodus is supposedly not expected, but players could depart if good proposals are made by interested clubs.

According to MEN, Varane, Casemiro, Martial, Sancho and Van de Beek could all be moved on. All five have struggled to work their way into Ten Hag’s plans of late for differing reasons.

Man Utd duo Casemiro and Raphael Varane will reportedly be allowed to leave in the January window (Image: Getty)

Varane has started just one of the last 13 matches. The reason for his omission from the starting 11 for October’s Manchester derby was described by Ten Hag as “tactical” but the Frenchman has played in just 12 Premier League minutes in the interim. Harry Maguire has taken Varane’s place and won the league’s Player of the Month award for November.

Team-mate Casemiro was signed by Ten Hag for £60m in the summer of 2022 and was initially a revelation at Old Trafford. A midfield lynchpin in last season’s League Cup triumph and successful quest for Champions League qualification, the Brazilian has since struggled with form and injuries.

Casemiro is absent until late December with a hamstring issue but his concerning dip in form will reportedly see United make the former Real Madrid star available in January. So too will bids for forward Martial, whose substitution during Saturday’s dismal 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth was sarcastically cheered by portions of Old Trafford.

Martial has a contract that expires in the summer. United will reportedly not trigger an extension clause in the 28-year-old’s deal, and he will leave for free if there is no buyer in January.

Fellow attacker Sancho could also be sold having been exiled from the first-team since early September after a bitter falling-out with Ten Hag. The United boss insisted that the door is open for Sancho to return should he apologise, but that outcome now seems unlikely.

Meanwhile, midfielder Van de Beek will be allowed to move on from his torrid spell at United. A £34m purchase from Ten Hag’s Ajax in 2021, the Netherlands international has failed to win a place in Ten Hag’s United team since his countryman’s appointment a year later.

The report adds that there is uncertainty over the future of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. United will reportedly trigger an extension clause in the contract of the former Crystal Palace star, but talks over a new deal for the 25-year-old have supposedly stalled.

‘He’s not…’ – Dermot Gallagher disagreed with one big decision from Liverpool’s win on Saturday

Dermot Gallagher believes that the officials got one big call wrong during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Reds were trailing 1-0 with 15 minutes of normal time remaining when Jordan Ayew – who’d previously been booked – was shown a second yellow card for impeding Harvey Elliott on the halfway line.

Speaking on Sky Sports News‘ Ref Watch segment on Monday morning, the former Premier League referee believes that the Ghanaian’s foul wasn’t worthy of the second booking which saw him depart prematurely.

When asked if there was enough on it to warrant a yellow card, Gallagher replied: “I thought not. All I can think is the referee thinks Ayew is breaking a promising attack, which he’s not.”

READ MORE: (Video) James Milner reveals brilliant reason why he chose to swap Man City for Liverpool

Taking the incident in isolation, Ayew knew he was doing in tripping Elliott, and it probably warranted a yellow card in and of itself.

However, the first booking Andy Madley had shown to the 32-year-old – for stopping Virgil van Dijk from taking a quick free kick – was harsh, so the referee had made a rod for his own back by the time the Palace attacker committed the offence which saw him given his marching orders.

Neither incident seemed like much to merit him being sent off – even combined they were no worse than Cristian Romero’s stamp on Callum Wilson yesterday, which saw the Tottenham defender shown yellow rather than red.

Some may argue that, having already booked him, the referee could’ve let Ayew off with a final warning for the foul on Elliott, although then he might’ve faced questions as to why he didn’t give a yellow card which would’ve been warranted more than the first one he’d shown.

The rights and wrongs may continue to be discussed, but what’s beyond doubt is that the Ghanaian’s dismissal was a turning point on Saturday, with Liverpool seizing upon the one-player advantage to score twice and salvage victory from the jaws of defeat.

Liverpool could offer transfer escape route to frustrated €30-40m star

Liverpool could reportedly get the chance to offer an escape route to frustrated Juventus youngster Kenan Yildiz, who might be realistically available for around €30-40million.

The Reds have previously been linked as big admirers of Yildiz in a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, and now a fresh report from Calciomercato has further updates on the player’s situation.

The report states that the highly-rated young Turkey international has become frustrated by his situation at Juve, and this could mean Liverpool have the chance to swoop for the talented 18-year-old if they come up with the right kind of money.

It’s suggested that something around €30m could be a decent starting point for LFC to try their luck for Yildiz, who has also been recently linked with Arsenal by Tuttosport, as cited and translated by Sport Witness, though there hasn’t been much of an update on that since then.

Yildiz looks like he could have an impact at one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, so it will be intriguing to see how this saga develops in the weeks and months ahead.

Liverpool have often signed some of the world’s best young players, and Yildiz looks like he’d be another smart addition for the future.

Liverpool injury update: Alexis Mac Allister, Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson latest news and return dates
It is a familiar injury list facing Jurgen Klopp

MATT VERRI
Liverpool sit top of the table but there are still a number of injury concerns for Jurgen Klopp to deal with.

Having edged past Fulham after a late turnaround, Liverpool came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, as Harvey Elliott’s stoppage-time winner left them leading the way in the Premier League after Arsenal then fell to defeat against Aston Villa.

Klopp had Alisson back in goal against Palace, with the Brazilian recovering from injury, but Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota were not fit to return for Liverpool.

Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago remain on the sidelines for the Reds too, while Andy Robertson continues his recovery after shoulder surgery.

Here’s the latest on the Liverpool injury list…

Alexis Mac Allister
Alexis Mac Allister missed Liverpool’s win over Crystal Palace after picking up a knee issue against Sheffield United.

The midfielder needed stitches on a cut before he was forced off at Bramall Lane and is not expected to be risked in the dead-rubber Europa League match against Union SG on Thursday, leaving him in a race to recover in time for Manchester United’s visit on Sunday.

“Macca doesn’t look good, so we have to see day by day,” said Klopp ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace.

“They were pretty hopeful after the game that it was not serious. It’s not that serious, but in the period of the year if you are out for five days, it’s 12 games pretty much.”

Potential return date: December 17, Premier League vs Manchester United

Diogo Jota
Diogo Jota has been out of action since the draw with Manchester City last month.

The forward has though been running outside as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury, and Klopp hinted about a timeline for Jota’s return when asked how he would cope with Mohamed Salah’s absence in January during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Andy Robertson
A shoulder injury picked up while on international duty in October has kept Andy Robertson on the sidelines in recent weeks.

The left-back was forced to undergo surgery after dislocating his shoulder playing for Scotland and it was reported at the time that he would be out for up to three months.

“I’ve not looked that far ahead yet [to a possible return date],” Robertson said last month. “I’m just trying to take it week by week.

“I don’t want to put a game in mind and then I don’t make it or I come back before then. I’m just taking it slowly but surely just now, and then there’ll be a time to start pushing it – and when that comes, I’ll try to get on the pitch as quickly as I can.”

Potential return date: January 2024

Joel Matip
Joel Matip is set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL.

With the defender out of contract in June, there is a chance he has played his final game for Liverpool as he undergoes surgery and begins a long road to recovery.

However, Klopp has insisted the club will “show their class” and believes Matip deserves a new deal, suggesting he could still have a future at the club.

Potential return date: Unknown

Thiago
Liverpool fans will have to wait until 2024 to see Thiago back in action.

The midfielder had surgery in April and continues to battle a hip injury, with the issue preventing him from playing a single minute of football so far this season.

He has suffered a couple of setbacks in his recovery, and Klopp revealed the midfielder is unlikely to return until next year.

The Liverpool said: “It’s an ongoing thing and we cannot put any kind of pressure on there as well. We expect him to be back – and I would say probably the start of the new year.”

Potential return date: January 2024

LIVERPOOL HOPE TO HAVE THIAGO BACK EARLY NEXT YEAR
LIVERPOOL FC VIA GETTY IMAGES
Stefan Bajcetic
Like Thiago, it has been a frustrating campaign for Stefan Bajcetic, though the teenager has at least been able to play this season.

The midfielder started in the Europa League against LASK and then featured in the Carabao Cup win over Leicester, but he has been out of action since September.

No timeframe has been given on his return, with Bajcetic also seemingly unlikely to play again this year.

Potential return date: January 2024

Liverpool footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold helps homeless charity over Christmas

Liverpool footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold has teamed up with the Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram to help the homeless over the festive period.

It is the busiest time of year for homeless charities, so they are teaming up with The Whitechapel Centre to deliver emergency parcels to nearly 2,000 people across Merseyside.

The packages include gifts, vouchers, clothing and sanitary products to those who rely on The Whitechapel Centre’s services. For many people who rely on its support, this will be their first Christmas without a home of their own.

The charity, which receives the majority of its funding from Liverpool City Council, is currently experiencing soaring demand, with its outreach team seeing a record number of people sleeping rough over the last 12 months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold said: “I’m someone who has been fortunate to receive unbelievable support from my city all my life, so the motivation is to give something back at Christmas.
“Liverpool is lucky to have community leaders who know which areas are most in need of additional help and I’m really grateful to Mayor Rotheram and The Whitechapel Centre for allowing me to partner with them. In doing so we stand alongside the many other brilliant organisations and campaigners who are dedicated to issue.
“Homelessness is something that can impact people and families through no fault of their own. We should all listen and engage with those on the front line, who dedicate their time to helping those most in need. If my involvement and support helps, even in a small way, then I appreciate the opportunity to play a part.”

As well as supporting The Whitechapel Centre, the packages will be sent to homeless charities and support services across the Liverpool City Region including Housing First.

Launched by Mayor Rotheram in 2018, Housing First is a new way to tackle homelessness in the region, focusing on putting people in a safe, secure property of their own at the earliest opportunity.

To date, more than 2,000 homeless people across the Liverpool City Region have been supported by Housing First, with more than 200 securing the first secure tenancy in their lifetime.

Steve Rotheram
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “There’s been an alarming rise in homelessness over the last decade, not just in our area, but right across the country. Increasingly we’re also seeing that the impacts of the ongoing cost of living crisis are forcing more of the most vulnerable in our community into homelessness and destitution as they struggle to make ends meet.

“We’re doing everything we can with the limited funding we’ve managed to wrestle from government to tackle some of the very worst forms of homelessness and provide people with the wraparound support they need. Yet, despite our efforts, we still rely heavily on the generosity of volunteers and donors who support fantastic places like The Whitechapel Centre and countless other charities across the region who provide a safety net to people during their greatest moment of need”

Council requests ‘urgent support’ from Government over temporary accommodation
Liverpool Homeless FC host football tournament to encourage suicide awareness
The Whitechapel Centre is the Liverpool City Region’s leading homeless and housing charity. It works with people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation.

David Carter, Chief Executive of The Whitechapel Centre, said: “Homelessness is a terrifying experience at any time of the year but at Christmas it is even worse.  This winter we are working with more people than ever before, from people who are facing eviction to those who are sleeping rough. We always try to make Christmas as enjoyable as possible, our outreach teams are working throughout, checking-in with people, hosting Christmas meals and giving out gifts. We know the people of Liverpool really care about others less fortunate and it’s wonderful that Trent and Steve are being so generous with their time and donations.

“Sadly, we’re already seeing record numbers of people coming to us for help and we expect this to continue throughout the winter. As a city region we are facing unprecedented levels of poverty, housing need and homelessness. There are many factors causing this and we need systemic changes across the country to bring a halt to the situation. In the meantime, we are very grateful for the support and donations we receive from the people of the Liverpool City Region.”

The Whitechapel Centre is currently taking donations for its Christmas appeal. Donations can be dropped off at The Whitechapel Centre’s warehouse, Unit 6, 10a Blackstock Street, L3 6EP. The warehouse if open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-3pm.
