Decision made about letting£80m Frenchman make Liverpool move this summer!

Liverpool are interested in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and the Spanish giants have responded to the latest links with the Reds.

LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp knows that his current side are not good enough to compete with Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and possibly Chelsea for that Premier League title next season.

He knows that he needs to add some more quality to the squad – some more depth and freshness – and Tchouameni is a man that has been on the shopping list of the club for some time.

A report from Spain emerged last month, suggesting Liverpool have made an opening offer for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, but was quickly rejected as the Spaniards didn’t want to sell.

WHAT IS THE LATEST –

It has been a difficult summer for the Reds in the transfer market, striking deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but struggling to add another midfielder to their squad.

The Athletic are now reporting that the 23-year-old is seen as a key player by Real Madrid and the Frenchman has no interest in pushing for a move away from the Spanish capital.

That means that Liverpool will have to switch their attentions away from the midfielder as they are not keen to let him leave.

TCHOUAMENI WOULD BE GREAT SIGNING –

Even though Madrid have just signed Jude Bellingham – Tchouameni is a player that they are not willing to let go this summer – he has a big future with the Spaniards.

LIVERPOOL are interested in the lad – and although a deal will still be difficult – he would be the perfect replacement for Fabinho.

It may be a deal that never happens – but he is a player that fans would love to see arrive that is for sure as he has all the ability to make a big impact at Anfield.

Gonçalo Inácio call, Trent Alexander-Arnold move – Easiest Liverpool fix with two more transfers
Were it not for all the surrounding transfer drama, Liverpool would probably have reflected on an opening-day draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as a decent enough result. But as multiple major targets slipped beyond FSG’s reach, failure to begin the season by earning three points morphed into apparent confirmation of all of the glaring holes in Jürgen Klopp’s squad.

Of course, that analysis is not completely wide of the mark. Observers were treated to a clear demonstration of why Liverpool and Chelsea were both chasing Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia, with the contest quickly developing into a wide-open, end-to-end affair.

It now seems as though both of those players will snub Liverpool in favor of a move to the capital. That’s an undeniable setback for Klopp — he has spent pre-season using makeshift solutions including Trent Alexander-Arnold in the number six role, and would have hoped for a permanent fix by this point.

Chelsea also enjoyed plenty of joy down Liverpool’s left flank. While many expected Alexander-Arnold to be targeted, it was Andy Robertson who struggled most in a hybrid role. That comes amid murmurings that the club could do with signing a left-footed center-back like Gonçalo Inácio to slot into that position — and a claim from Football Insider that the Portugal star is a target in the final weeks of the window.

But while there were clearly multiple things that did not work for Liverpool against Chelsea, there were also a number of reasons to be optimistic that this squad is really not far away from challenging again. It’s far from ideal that recruitment has dragged on into the new season, but FSG can still find a fix with just a few more moves.

Perhaps the most fundamental decision is not related to transfer business at all, but rather to the role of Alexander-Arnold. Throughout pre-season, Klopp has appeared committed to this hybrid experiment, but already there are signs of diminishing returns.

Hurriedly devised last season as a temporary fix, as Fabinho struggled in the lone number six role, Alexander-Arnold’s much-increased attacking output was little more than a happy byproduct of the move. Yet truly unlocking the number 66 has somehow become the focus of the discussion.

There’s a separate conversation to be had about whether his long-term future lies as an out-and-out midfielder, to truly get the best of his considerable creative talent. But for now, the problem to solve is still Liverpool’s porous defense — and it honestly seems like the hybrid approach is making it worse.

Unlike previously, both flanks are now a weak point. Moving Alexander-Arnold back into a more conventional right-back role, even if only temporarily, solves the Robertson problem at a stroke. In the new system, perhaps someone like Inácio would be better, but that would see Liverpool unceremoniously discard one of the league’s top goal-creators over the past half-decade.

Just as critically, the situation has moved on from last season. Admittedly, even a struggling Fabinho was better at number six than any of the current makeshift options. But whoever plays there is now protected by a functioning press again — this was on show against Chelsea, with Dominik Szoboszlai particularly impressive. Alexis Mac Allister will be similarly effective when he is able to play further forward.

That more or less negates the need for Alexander-Arnold to keep tucking in. Clearly, FSG still needs to find a number six, and quickly. As this week has demonstrated, it isn’t an easy search. But even without the absolute top target in the Fabinho role, the revived Klopp defend-from-the-front approach is already the ‘extra man’ Liverpool needed.

So a strong number six alone would be enough to give Liverpool a shot at competitiveness. But over the course of a long campaign, depth is key, and FSG cannot ignore the need for a new defender.

Even back in Klopp’s trusted 4-3-3, Inácio deserves to be in the frame. As a left-sided center-back, he could ultimately be readied as the Virgil van Dijk heir, while providing much-needed cover in the here and now for an injury-prone defensive line. Rather than replacing Robertson, he could give the Scot renewed freedom to bomb forward.

Ideally, Liverpool would also add another midfielder to the mix. But having left itself so little time, that might be optimistic — and Inácio plus a smart number six transfer, if coupled with a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold, should be enough to give Klopp the tools to fight for the top honors.
