Injured John Stones ‘worried’ as Man City hope trio will be passed fit to face Arsenal
Man City’s title hopes may have suffered a major blow with the injury to John Stones.

Manchester City ace John Stones is now ‘worried’ that he’ll be missing for this weekend’s crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal. The England international hobbled off the Wembley pitch on Tuesday night, as Pep Guardiola’s injury list ahead of Sunday’s match continues to grow.

The clock hadn’t even reached the 10-minute mark by the time Stones had indicated his intention to be subbed off during England’s 2-2 draw with Belgium. A devastating blow for Stones, whose season has been disrupted by several injury problems throughout, and now, it looks as if he could be absent for City’s biggest Premier League game of the season so far against Arsenal.

According to a report by The Daily Star, Stones has returned to Manchester to undergo scans on his groin and is ‘worried’ that he won’t be fit in time to play against the Gunners – a game which could make or break City’s title defence. Mikel Arteta’s men enter the weekend’s action top of the table and a victory for Arsenal in East Manchester could kill City’s hopes of securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

When asked after the Belgium stalemate, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate admitted he was unsure how serious the injury problem for Stones was. He said: “No [it wasn’t a risk to play him]. The first game [against Brazil] for him wasn’t a game that was a high level in terms of intensity… But of course, we’re disappointed if he’s got a problem. It’s in the adductor area. He came in on the back of not having played for two weeks so it wasn’t an overload issue. But I hate sending players back to their clubs if they’re not fully fit.”

The Stones situation is yet another injury problem for Guardiola to contend with after numerous first-team players picked up knocks while away on international duty. Matheus Nunes was missing for Portugal’s friendly against Slovenia because of a foot problem, while Manuel Akanji pulled out of the Switzerland squad because of a fitness concern, with Kyle Walker having also gone home from England duty early.

It isn’t all bad news for Guardiola though, with both Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish expected to be available for the Blues. De Bruyne withdrew from Belgium’s squad for the recent March internationals after manager Domenico Tedesco confirmed he was suffering from a minor groin problem, but the 32-year-old has since been training regularly in Manchester.

Whereas Grealish, who like Stones has seen his campaign stunted by problems, is also believed to be back in contention for a starting spot. The former Aston Villa captain hasn’t been involved for City since their FA Cup fifth-round victory over Luton Town in February.

Liverpool managerial candidate set for look around Anfield under Michael Edwards’ surveillance
Liverpool are still hunting for Jurgen Klopp’s successor and have the chance to run the rule over one leading candidate.

He was a figure unbeknown to almost everyone inside Anfield as he took charge of his maiden Premier League game.

Many of the purists might not have been too aware of Roberto De Zerbi or his background as he led his Brighton team for the first time. Two days prior when appointed the Seagulls’ new boss, the masses hadn’t likely even heard of his name.

But by the end of a crisp Autumn afternoon, the Italian had announced himself to English football. An enthralling 3-3 draw against Liverpool was De Zerbi’s great arrival to these shores.

Brighton led the game by two goals before trailing with seven minutes remaining before Leandro Trossard completed his hat-trick. In truth, the visitors deserved a share of the spoils. Graham Potter’s void he left behind when making the switch to Chelsea was regarded as irreplaceable by some given the magnificent job he carried out on the south coast. In 2021-22, Brighton had finished a record ninth place and had raced into fourth in the early stages of 2022-23. Yet after 90 minutes, De Zerbi displayed the formative signs he’d not only continue Potter’s fine work but surpass it.

And now as the former Shakhtar Donetsk boss prepares to stand in the Merseyside technical area as Brighton face Liverpool on Sunday, he’s classed as a leading candidate to make it a permanent stay.

While the layman hadn’t been acquainted with De Zerbi, Klopp’s footballing acumen meant he knew what Liverpool would be facing. Ahead of the game, the Liverpool manager said: “Brighton is doing an incredible job, he did an incredible job as Sassuolo and Shakhtar. Probably most of the people saw, or remember the game, against [Real] Madrid – a really good game. That’s him. He’s a really brave coach, he’s very influential. I don’t know how good his English is at the moment, it could be a bit [of] an issue, but apart from that his football idea suits Brighton.”

The performance was no fluke because of the proverbial new manager bounce. Brighton’s trajectory would only continue one way. They’d go on to beat the Reds twice more – first a 2-1 FA Cup triumph before Klopp’s men suffered a chastening 3-0 loss at the AMEX Stadium in the reverse league fixture. In fairness, Liverpool were not the only scalp Brighton claimed. Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea were beaten as the Seagulls earned a record sixth-place finish – and Europa League qualification – as well as reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.

Results were not just impressive but performances were easy on the eye, with De Zerbi’s style of football lauded. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who may be regarded as the most gifted coach of all-time, said of De Zerbi: “There is no team playing the way they play – it’s unique. I had the feeling when he arrived the impact he would have in the Premier League would be great – I didn’t expect him to do it in this short space of time.

“He creates 20 or 25 chances per game, better by far than most opponents. He monopolises the ball in a way it hasn’t been for a long time”

It’s De Zerbi’s achievements last season which has placed him on Fenway Sports Group’s list of candidates to replace Klopp, whose time in the Anfield hot seat culminates in less than two months after his bombshell announcement.

Brighton haven’t been able to match their previous form this season, having exited the Europa League in the last 16 and sit eighth in the league. There are mitigating circumstances, however, with the challenges of playing twice per week in Europe for the first time significant. What’s more, the Seagulls’ two star players were sold as Liverpool swooped for Alexis Mac Allister for £35 million while Moises Caicedo joined Chelsea for a British record £111 million. That ripped the heartbeat from the starting line-up.

In fairness, if Brighton were eighth in any usual season then it would be regarded as an outstanding feat. Such are the standards De Zerbi has hit that expectations have been raised.

In truth, it’s scarcely a surprise De Zerbi is in the mix to succeed Klopp along with former Liverpool midfielder and Bayern Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Sporting Lisbon supremo Ruben Amorim. He’s got admirers aplenty and deploys the style of football that excites.

Michael Edwards has been brought back to Fenway Sports Group to ensure that the Reds do not jettison when Klopp departs. From now until May, FSG’s new CEO of football along with newly-appointed sporting director Richard Hughes have a priority; to get Klopp’s heir right. De Zerbi is set for his latest look around Anfield – and Edwards will undoubtedly be keeping a close watch.

Roberto De Zerbi will reportedly be Bayern Munich’s next favourite target should they be unable to recruit Xabi Alonso.

Sky German’s Florian Plettenberg shared the update on X (formerly Twitter) – as was confirmed by German outlet SportBILD – this morning.

The Merseysiders also admire the Brighton & Hove Albion manager, though Ruben Amorim is thought to be higher on the priority list.

Liverpool could have a clear run at Amorim
It’s worth noting that Manchester United have also been linked with the Sporting Lisbon boss. That said, one might reasonably venture that our project will prove far more appealing than the current mess over at Old Trafford.

Reassuringly, we otherwise appear to have a relatively clear run at the 39-year-old should we also be unable to convince Alonso to end his relationship with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spanish head coach has yet to make public any decision over his future whilst his side competes for a first Bundesliga title in its history.

Leverkusen could yet also box off further silverware in the Europa League and DFB Pokal.

Does De Zerbi have better merits?
The obvious differentiator between De Zerbi and Amorim is Premier League experience.

Albeit, it’s worth pointing out that a move to Anfield would still represent a seismic jump for the former Shakhtar Donetsk boss.

It’s far more likely to come down to how the pair comparatively performs on internal data tests.

Liverpool next manager: Major update on Xabi Alonso appointment as new talks revealed – sources

Liverpool are still hopeful of agreeing a deal to bring Xabi Alonso to the club despite reports claiming he is likely to join Bayern Munich if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen, sources have told Football Insider.

Sky Sports reported last week (22 March) that Alonso, 42, prefers a move to the Allianz Arena over Anfield if he is to leave Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen.

However, the Spaniard remains the top target for Liverpool ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s summer exit – and a well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Reds are ready to “break the bank” to get him.

The Merseysiders haven’t given up on luring their former midfielder back to Anfield in the off-season.

Liverpool are working on a deal to appoint Alonso behind the scenes as they draw up the succession plan ahead of Klopp’s exit – which was announced in January.

Ultimately, the Merseysiders recognise that the decision will come down to the Spaniard, as it is effectively his job if he wants it.

Liverpool are interviewing other targets and have fall-back plans in case Alonso turns them down.

Liverpool working on Alonso appointment despite new Bayern Munich claim
The Spaniard has his Leverkusen side sitting top of the Bundesliga and is on course to win a historic treble with the German side this season.

He only started his senior management career at the club in October 2022 but is already considered one of the world’s most exciting young managers.

The 42-year-old’s contract at Leverkusen is set to run until June 2026.

His side are yet to lose a game in the 2023-24 campaign, winning 33 and drawing five.

Cody Gakpo is loving life at Liverpool as he now targets personal and collective success in his second year at the club.

Thursday marked exactly 12 months since an agreement was reached for the Dutch forward’s transfer from PSV Eindhoven, marking the beginning of his journey at Anfield that has seen him score 14 goals from his half-century of appearances.

Gakpo feels totally settled on Merseyside and credits the love given to him from the supporters as a reason for his quick adaptation period.

The No.18 told Liverpoolfc.com: “A year with obviously really good moments, some lesser-good moments, but I’m happy to be here and hopefully beautiful moments to come.

“I really feel at home and I think the club is amazing. It’s like a big family. The supporters are amazing every game and show love to all of us. I appreciate it and I love being here.”

On his aims for year two, the 24-year-old stated: “I hope to achieve a lot – on a personal level as well. But as a team we have big dreams and big goals. We are working on that.

“I think it always takes some time for every player in a new place to settle a little bit but I felt [at] home quite fast.

“It’s an amazing club and hopefully many more beautiful moments will come for me and for the team.”

Jürgen Klopp’s Reds currently sit top of the Premier League at the halfway point in the campaign.

They begin the new calendar year by welcoming Newcastle United to Anfield on Monday night, with Gakpo and his teammates looking to maintain their occupancy of first place.

He continued: “I think we are doing really good from the beginning of the season and we have a good group.

“This game, even though we are in first place, we just go into this game like it’s a really important game – like every other game.

“Of course it brings pressure to be in the top position in the league but I think we don’t see it like that. We are just really focused on that one game we have to play in that moment, and I think that’s also a strength of the team.

“They [Newcastle] have a really good team. Obviously we have to work really hard, we have to fight together, stick together even through the difficult moments maybe that will come in the game – hopefully not but it’s a world-class team as well.

“It’s hopefully going to be a great game with us on top at the end.”
