🚨Man City hammer Brighton 4-0 to be hot on English leaders Arsenal’s trail – reports

Pep Guardiola makes claim about Liverpool losing to Everton right after Man City’s win last night.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has delivered his verdict on Liverpool following the Reds’ shock defeat in the Merseyside derby this week.

Jurgen Klopp‘s bid to win the Premier League title in his final season as the Liverpool manager was dealt a massive blow by Everton at Goodison Park.

The Reds missed a number of chances in front of goal and that cost them. Goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed a memorable win for Everton at home.

Manchester City were always the favourites to go all the way in this title race, and Liverpool’s defeat on Wednesday further increased their chances.

Guardiola has now had his say on what happened at Goodison Park.

Pep Guardiola makes Liverpool claim after they lost to Everton
Manchester City are just incredible at this stage of every season, aren’t they?

Pep Guardiola has built an incredible side, and irrespective of what happens in the first seven months of the season, they come to life in the final two.

The champions took on Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex last night, and everyone expected it to be a tricky game for them.

However, they battered them 4-0 and have now leapfrogged Liverpool in the table despite playing a game fewer than Jurgen Klopp’s side.

After his side’s emphatic win, Guardiola had his say on Liverpool’s defeat at Everton this week.

The Manchester City boss claimed that the title race is by no means over as any of the three teams could still suffer shock defeats in the coming weeks.

Guardiola further showered praise on Liverpool and claimed that his appreciation for the Reds is still very, very high.

He said, as per Manchester Evening News: “Many things can happen. What happened to Liverpool dropping two games against Palace and Everton can happen to us and happen to Arsenal.

“Everton playing for their lives – like Forest. Maybe it was a real contender for us, my appreciation for Liverpool is higher than ever. You see the game they draw at Old Trafford, or yesterday, Pickford was exceptional.

“Against Palace, the chances they miss. Tell me the reason why? It’s football. I can give examples for my team too. It’s there.

TRANSFERSTxiki Begiristain ‘informs people close to him’ of imminent Real Madrid interest in unexpected Manchester City starPublished: 13:30 on April 25th 2024 | Last Updated: 12:25 on April 25th 2024By Freddie Pye

Manchester City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain has reportedly ‘informed some people close to him’ of imminent Real Madrid interest in Rodri.

The former Barcelona chief is understood to be approaching the end of this time at the Etihad Stadium, with the wider feeling being that he will leave the club following a 12-year stay alongside Pep Guardiola, despite a date having not been decided.

In the meantime, it is expected to be business as usual for the 59-year-old, who will aim to ensure that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City have the best talents at their disposal to compete for all available honours into the new season.

However, in a staggering new claim, arguably Pep Guardiola’s most integral component of his set-up could be subject to transfer interest from one of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Real Madrid eyeing Rodri for the future plans.

That is according to the information of journalist Joan Fontes, who reports that prior to his eventual departure from City, sporting director Txiki Begiristain has ‘informed some people close to him’ that defensive midfield mainstay Rodri will be the subject of transfer interest.

The report claims that the Spain international star has become the player chosen by Real Madrid chief Florentino Pérez to reinforce the Santiago Bernabeu club’s midfield, either this summer or for the summer of 2025.

At this stage however, the common consensus is that of all the players to be eyed for transfer in future, Rodri would be among a very elite group within Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad to not be for sale.

Not many players would fit into that category from the viewpoint of most supporters, with Phil Foden, Ruben Dias, John Stones, and Ederson perhaps the only other few that would cause immense heartbreak should they ever leave the organisation.

For the time being, Manchester City will almost certainly be eyeing a contract renewal for Rodri in the very immediate future, as they look to reward the 27-year-old for his truly transformational impact on the football club since his arrival in 2019.

Man City humble Brighton to keep pressure on Arsenal

Phil Foden struck twice as Manchester City stepped up their bid for a fourth Premier League crown in a row with a ruthless 4-0 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday.

A day after Liverpool’s title challenge suffered a huge blow with a 2-0 defeat at Everton, City kept up the pressure on leaders Arsenal with a dominant display that left them one point behind the London club with a game in hand.

“I don’t know if it was statement, obviously every game is a lot of pressure but the only thing we can do is try to perform as well as we did today,” City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne told Sky Sports.

De Bruyne’s superb diving header put City, missing top scorer Erling Haaland due to injury, ahead in the 17th minute.

“It doesn’t happen too much, does it? I think the only way I could reach it was jumping to the ball, and it goes in like a little lob, but it’s obviously not something I’m really good at,” De Bruyne said after netting his first headed goal in the Premier League.

Foden scored his first with a deflected free kick and Brighton defensive errors allowed Bernardo Silva to win the ball and set up Foden to sweep a shot into the bottom corner before halftime.

Foden became only the third player to score 50 top-flight goals under manager Pep Guardiola aged 23 or younger, after Lionel Messi and Haaland.

Julian Alvarez completed the rout midway through the second half and Brighton, who remained 11th in the table, never looked capable of launching a fightback.

Manchester City are unbeaten in 30 games in all competitions with 24 wins and six draws, making them the third English top-flight side to reach that landmark after Nottingham Forest (40 in 1978) and Manchester United (34 in 1993-94 and 33 in 1998-99).

Their last loss excluding penalty shootouts was against Aston Villa in early December.

City head to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on Sunday. They close out the season with matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

Tony Cascarino says two Man City players are simply not as good anymore

Tony Cascarino believes Manchester City have two players who are not at the level they once were.

It is fair to say that Cascarino’s claim is a bold one.

Even if some of City’s players have not been at the standard they perhaps were last season, it would not be outlandish to suggest that they are superior to a majority of the talent in the Premier League.

Potentially even in the world.

As a result, their standards are sky-high.

Having won the treble during the 2022/2023 season, their individual standards were bound to undergo somewhat of a decline.

Cascarino says two City players are not as good anymore
But to conclusively state the players in question are not at the same standard might be viewed as a stretch by some.

MORE MAN CITY STORIES
For instance, even if Jack Grealish has not been at his absolute best this season, his recent displays are a reminder of why he remains one of the standout wide players in the Premier League.

The same goes for Nathan Ake, who has largely had an impressive season.

Of course, during the previous campaign, City’s number six was remarkable.

But it is a challenge to make such conclusive arguments against a group of players who continue to make history and prove their doubters wrong.

However, Cascarino is seemingly a brave man.

Tony Cascarino feels Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker are not at the level they once were.

“Of course, Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker are not the players they were, which were, spectacular. They are in their thirties now”, he said on The Times’ The Game Football Podcast.

To make such a claim about Walker is fair but not De Bruyne
In our view, Tony Cascarino is right about Kyle Walker being past his best but to say the same about Kevin De Bruyne is premature.

De Bruyne has had an injury-riddled season and to have expected him to be at his flawless best upon his return to fitness is rather unreasonable.

Even so, the Belgian has showcased his genius in games against Newcastle, Real Madrid and Luton Town.

As for Kyle Walker, he has been making errors left, right and centre as he did by failing to mark Rodrygo against Los Blancos in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final.

Walker’s pace has not necessarily declined to a significant degree but his positioning and decision-making has been below par since the start of the season.

LIVERPOOL FC TRANSFER RUMOURS
Shock report claims Reds have ‘opened talks’ with Real Madrid star over summer move

PETER STAUNTON
Liverpool have opened talks with the representatives of Real Madrid left back Ferland Mendy over a summer transfer, according to a shock new report in France.

Mendy, 28, only has one year left on his current Real deal and the club could opt to cash in this summer before losing him on a free in 2025.

Although established as a favourite of manager Carlo Ancelotti, Mendy’s long-term future is under threat due to the 14-time Champions League winners’ interest in Alphonso Davies.

Ancelotti recently described Mendy as the best defensive left back in the world but his enthusiasm for the former Lyon player is so far unmatched by the Real decision makers.

REAL MADRID WANT ALPHONSO DAVIES
Davies, the 23-year-old Canadian, is also out of contract in 2025 and there has been no breakthrough with Bayern higher-ups regarding fresh terms.

Bayern are reluctant to bow to Davies’ demands and they could also opt to sell him this summer rather than entertain him running down his current deal.

Real have been long-standing favourites to acquire the services of Davies, although recent reports in Spain suggest los Blancos are uneasy about spending a €60 million to €70m sum for a player with only one year left on his deal.

They could instead seek to sign him on a free next summer.

LIVERPOOL OPEN TALKS WITH FERLAND MENDY
And now comes the news that France international Mendy could be on the move to Anfield.

The Reds could well delve into the left-back market this summer having watched Andy Robertson miss significant chunks of this campaign through injury and with question marks persisting over deputy Kostas Tsimikas.

L’Equipe reports that Liverpool have spoken with Mendy’s entourage regarding a deal although there has been no formal offer yet for the 2022 Champions League winner.

There remains considerable uncertainty over Liverpool’s transfer business ahead of the summer with Jurgen Klopp leaving his post as manager and Richard Hughes coming in as sporting director in June.

Also linked with Mendy ahead of the summer window are Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle and Napoli, although the Italian champions don’t appear to be able to afford Mendy’s salary demands.

Xabi Alonso SHOCK, Amorim SO CLOSE and Pep’s massive MOAN – Liverpool FC News Recap

ARJUN SUBRAMANIAN
Manchester City now have a Liverpool target on THEIR OWN manager shortlist as they consider life after Pep Guardiola.

Diario AS reports that Manchester City are one of several clubs looking at Xabi Alonso. The Bayer Leverkusen boss was a target for Liverpool this year, of course, before ultimately deciding to remain with his club.

Alonso has since clinched the Bundesliga title – Leverkusen’s first – which has only enhanced his reputation further. There will almost certainly be a push for his signature next year as a result, with clubs already lining up.
