Jurgen Klopp has a familiar selection headache for next Saturday’s derby against Everton – but nothing can compare with what happened two years ago today

Jurgen Klopp has grown all too accustomed to issues regarding team selection following the international break.

And a combination of injuries, suspensions and late returns mean the Liverpool manager will have another headache when his team are back in Premier League action at home to Everton on Saturday at 12.30pm.

It’ll be the 13th such early kick-off for the Reds during Klopp’s tenure, a number that will increase further with the trip to Manchester City next month. Indeed, Liverpool will have then taken part in six of the last eight 12.30pm kick-offs after an international break – matching the entire total of the next club over a period of more than eight years.

But no matter the problems with which Klopp has to contend during the next week, they won’t compare to the decisions that had to be made for the game that started that sequence of early starts two years ago today.

The Reds headed to Watford not only having to deal with another lunchtime post-international break fixture, but also the implications of coronavirus travel restrictions as the world slowly returned to normal after the destabilising impact of the pandemic.

The need to catch up on World Cup qualifiers saw South America national teams play three times inside eight days, the latter game taking place barely 36 hours before Liverpool were due to step out at Vicarage Road.

The Reds wanted the game put back to 7.45pm. Watford, as was their right, refused. The Premier League, meanwhile, sat back and did nothing. And quarantine rules meant Liverpool had no choice but to send Brazilian duo Alisson Becker and Fabinho direct to Spain to prepare for the Champions League against Atletico Madrid the following midweek. Atletico, by the way, had helpfully seen their La Liga game that weekend postponed by the authorities after being placed in a similar predicament to the Reds.

Liverpool just had to crack on. And that they did, as Roberto Firmino scored a hat-trick, Sadio Mane also notched and Mohamed Salah posted a goal-of-the-season contender as the Reds romped to a 5-0 win. Caoimhin Kelleher, making only his third Premier League start in place of the absent Alisson, had barely a save to make.

Intriguing, though, is how the line-up that afternoon will differ from the one that begins at Anfield for the 243rd Merseyside derby next weekend.

Kelleher is injured, while five of the starting line-up – Mane, Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson – have since departed, while it’s expected Andy Robertson will also be missing after dislocating his shoulder playing for Scotland in Spain last Thursday. Even among the nine substitutes, four – Neco Williams, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi – have gone while of the duo who instead went to Spain, Fabinho has also exited.

It means at most there will be four starters from that afternoon in Watford – Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip – who will expect to begin against Everton, while Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota, all on the bench at Vicarage Road, will also challenge.

But a reminder of that afternoon underlines that while the personnel change, the problems foisted upon Liverpool and Klopp by the fixture planners remain very much the same.

Report: Liverpool set to use Cody Gakpo tactic to sign 22-year-old midfielder this season
By Siddharth Juyal / October 16, 2023
Liverpool plans to employ a successful transfer strategy to sign Andre Trindade, which worked for Virgil Van Dijk and Cody Gakpo
Liverpool are using the transfer strategy to sign Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade who has shown great success in the past. The Reds applied patience to sign their long-term targets Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk in the January window.

Andre is currently in the middle of a successful Copa Libertadores campaign with Brazilian side Fluminense. The Brazilian club will be playing the final against Argentina club Boca Juniors on 4th November.

A rising star in Fluminense’s campaign
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder is a pivotal part of Fluminense’s success and he has grown immensely in experience and reputation. The Brazilian international has featured in 48 games for Fluminense this season and contributed with one goal. However, most of his work comes on the deeper side of the pitch where he acts as a midfield general.

Andre is a modern-day defensive midfielder playing No. 6 in a double-pivot role but capable of playing single-pivot. The Brazilian stands at 176cm and uses his size to his advantage while on the ball. His low centre of gravity and his mobility help him shift direction and move quickly on the ball in tight spaces.

Andre is pivotal for his team for game control, distribution, and keeping defensive organization intact. The 22-year-old is a mature and patient tackler and rarely relies on throwing himself on the ground. He uses his speed to track back and steal the ball away from the opponent.

The Brazilian international fits Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s count-pressing philosophy as he likes to press high up the pitch. Andre uses his game intelligence to intercept and anticipate the opposition’s attacks and passes.

Andre has a high passing percentage as he usually aims to keep possession and make himself available to his teammates. The Brazilian is not a focal point for creativity but is important to keep the tempo of the game in favour of his team. Andre assists teammates who are the source of creativity and does his job well in quickly distributing the ball. Although relatively short in stature, the Brazilian demonstrates deceptive strength and seldom falls victim to one-on-one challenges.

Fluminense president Bittencourt: “Liverpool contacted me directly for André. I told their director: my friend, I don’t sell André now. If you want to buy now to bring him in January, we can start talking” #LFC

The potential coup for Liverpool
TEAMtalk (h/t Liverpool Echo) claims that the Reds are planning to make a move before the January transfer window opens. The Reds used this tactic to sign Gakpo and Van Dijk before any other interested party could challenge them. According to the report, a ‘well-placed source’ told them:

“Liverpool like Andre a lot. Despite their upheaval in the summer window, they still feel they need something in that holding role in midfield and Andre could very well be that man.”

If the Reds sign Andre, the 22-year-old will be a coup for Klopp as his team needs a young energetic No.6. The German managed to successfully revamp his midfield during the summer and Andre fits the profile to complete the midfield. Many Kopites have already voiced their excitement for this potential recruitment. However, if the signing happens, the club and the fans need to show patience for Andre to adapt properly here.

Liverpool: Klopp’s “disappointment” bled them dry of £70.7m in five years
BY
TOM GRIFFIN
PUBLISHED 47 MINUTES AGO
During his time at Liverpool, Michael Edwards struck gold in the transfer window. On this occasion, however, he got it horribly wrong.

The sun may be beaming down on Anfield, but Liverpool have suffered through their fair share of rough patches in recent history.

In the era that preceded the arrival of the revolutionary Jurgen Klopp, the Premier League giants didn’t match performances to their status as a powerhouse in world football, failing to qualify for the Champions League between the years 2010 and 2013.

Presently, the Reds are battling it out on Thursday nights in the Europa League, but one underwhelming campaign can’t remove the masterful work that has been done during the trophy-laden Klopp era, orchestrated by sporting director Michael Edwards.

Edwards spent 11 years at the club in numerous roles before his departure last year, propelling the club back to their glory days through his ability to negotiate cut-price deals and earn the club huge profits on their assets.

He was instrumental in the club’s biggest-ever sale as Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona for a staggering £142m in January 2018 and in the transfer window prior, he was behind the remarkable deal that saw Liverpool buy Andrew Robertson for £8m from Hull City while Kevin Stewart went in the other direction for a similar price.

The impact he had on transforming the Reds is unquestionable, however, there were a few blotches on his copybook – after all – no one is perfect.

One of those was the deal to bring Naby Keita to the club in 2018, a player who massively underwhelmed in his five-year spell at Anfield.

How much did Naby Keita cost Liverpool?
In 2018, Klopp revamped his midfield by bringing in monstrous holding midfielder Fabinho while the £52m addition of Keita was supposed to challenge the likes of Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum for one of the advanced midfield spots.

Compared to legend Steven Gerrard by former Reds manager Gerard Houllier, Keita was meant to bring with him the complete midfield performances that were so often associated with the former.

Across his two spells at RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig, he produced 37 goals and 26 assists in 152 appearances and the 5 foot 8 metronome was expected to post similar numbers in the Premier League with Liverpool paying the premium for his services.

The Reds paid him a weekly wage of £120k per week, amounting to £6.27m a year and a whopping £18.72m for the time he spent at the club. It is fair to say, Keita bled the club dry as his move to England unravelled into a nightmare.

How did Naby Keita perform at Liverpool?
While Keita showed signs of the player he could have been at Liverpool, demonstrating glimpses of his fleet-footed ball-carrying and ability to slalom past the opposition markers, his reputation at the club was unfortunately tarnished by consistent injury issues and poor availability.

Spending a total of 89 days out in his first season and missing a total of 15 matches, his inaugural campaign at Anfield foreshadowed the rest of his time there.

A hugely talented player was being ruined by injuries which saw him miss an astonishing 107 games across the next four seasons due to injury troubles alone, much to the frustrations of Klopp.

While fitness problems hampered his progression – even when he made himself available for selection – he was utilised as a squad rotation player and ultimately failed to endear himself to the Anfield supporters when given an opportunity.

Dubbed by former player Dietmar Hamann as a “disappointment”, who summed up his Liverpool career perfectly, the 28-year-old managed a total of 129 appearances in all competitions for the club, mustering only 11 goals and seven assists, averaging a goal contribution once every seven games.

What’s more alarming is the fact that Keita only managed to complete the full ninety minutes in 12 of his 84 Premier League appearances, as per Transfermarkt, with his lacklustre displays forcing Klopp into substituting him early.

Despite arriving for a huge sum, Keita offered next to nothing during his five-year stay, only depleting the club’s resources of £70.7m at a cost of £3.9m per goal contribution and £6.4m every goal scored.

Liverpool’s agony was compounded this summer after the 28-year-old left the club to join Werder Bremen on a free transfer.

CHELSEABREAKING NEWS:Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Daniel has been sentence to 10 years inpresonment Published 3 days ago on October 12, 2023By soccerlivenews

BREAKING NEWS:Former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Daniel has been sentence to 10 years inpresonment

An arrest warrant has reportedly been issued for former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge.

According to the Daily Mail, the arrest warrant was issued after Sturridge failed to appear in a court in Los Angeles.

The former Chelsea man reportedly failed to appear in court over money he allegedly owes to a man who says he found his dog.

Back in July 2019, Sturridge publicly offered a reward for anyone who can safely return his pet Pomeranian after he said it was stolen from his house. You can watch the footage below.

ADVERT

Sturridge said: “We will pay anything for the dog. Whoever brings my dog back, 20 grand, 30 grand, whatever.

“Whoever knows who broke into my crib, I’ll pay you anything. I’m dead serious. I’ll pay whatever – it doesn’t matter the cost.”

American rapper Foster Washington, who goes by the name Killa Fame claimed to be the one to have found Sturridge’s dog and revealed he did not receive the promised payment.

ADVERT

In December 2021, Sturridge took to Twitter and said: “Just to let you know the truth at Christmas. I met a young boy who found my dog and paid him a reward, which he was delighted with, as was I to get my dog back because he was stolen.

“Other people are trying to benefit for their own personal gain. Thank you to the young boy once again. I’m very grateful Lucci is back with our family.”

Sturridge was ordered by a court in LA to pay Washington $30,000 following a default judgment as the former striker did not respond to the complaint made by the American.

ADVERT

Speaking to Mail Sport, Washington said: “or me, it’s a point of principle. He promised me the money. It’s a substantial amount of money that could change my family’s life.

“He thinks he is above the law. He thinks because he’s rich he doesn’t have to respond to what’s going on. That’s why I had to have the judge issue a warrant so he has to pay the money.”

SPORTbible has contacted Daniel Sturridge’s representatives for comment.

‘Genuinely’: Gary Lineker says attacker Liverpool sold in 2015 is just as good as Sadio Mane

Charles Jones
Thu 12 October 2023 9:45, UK
Liverpool have had some amazing attacking players over the years.

The likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all fondly remembered at Anfield and get a lot of praise for their ability among the Liverpool fanbase.

However, there’s another attacker from that era who has to also be considered a Premier League great – Raheem Sterling.

The winger, of course, spent the first portion of his career at Liverpool, and while he isn’t necessarily a fan favourite on Merseyside these days, he has to be considered one of the better players to play at Anfield over the past 10 years or so.

Speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Gary Lineker has even gone as far as to say that Sterling is as good as Sadio Mane was for Liverpool, claiming that there was not much between the pair.

Photo by Ulrik Pedersen/DeFodi Images via Getty Images
Sterling as good as Mane
Lineker had a discussion about the two attackers alongside Micah Richards.

“Ok, so to ask you this. Who is better, Mane or Sterling? See, a lot of people would go with Mane straight away, but Sterling has been doing it for a long time in the Premier League,” Richards said.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“I wouldn’t have that much between them. I genuinely wouldn’t. There’s not much between them, that’s difficult isn’t it,” Lineker said.

Close
This is a really tough debate.

Liverpool fans would probably pick Mane due to the way Sterling left the club in 2015, but, at the same time, Sterling has been so consistent over the years since leaving Anfield.

At Manchester City, the winger was good for 20 goals a season every season, and while you could say the same about Mane, their statistics were comparable.

For us, Mane is just that bit better because of what he brought to the Liverpool team, but in another world, that famous front three would be Sterling-Firmino-Salah rather than Mane-Firmino-Salah.

Liverpool: £68m down the drain, “awful” dud rinsed the Reds more than Thiago
BY
ROSIE TUDBALL
PUBLISHED 3 HOURS AGO
Liverpool have had some questionable names and figures on their payroll, with one player not living up to the millions he accumulated at the club…

HBAgency
HBAgency
Liverpool are heading back in the right direction after slipping out of the top four last season, with a lot of Jurgen Klopp’s side’s progression attributed to their successful summer of transfers.

It was a tedious transfer window for the Reds, as they completed the majority of their deals done early in welcoming Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister at the start of the business period.

While the Reds had a quiet period in the market while other club’s seemed busy, Klopp recruited well in adding the two midfielders to the fold, with both already repaying their fees with a strong start to life at Anfield.

Business hasn’t always been so sharp in the red corner of Merseyside, as highlighted by one of the deals sanctioned to welcome a certain player back in 2017, who called time on his Liverpool career after six years this summer.

When did Liverpool sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?
In the summer of 2017, the Reds announced the signing of former Arsenal ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had spent six years in north London before making the move to Merseyside.

The then-24-year-old was signed for a fee of £35m, a price that was poised to rise to £40m based on appearance-related add-ons to the joy of the Gunners.

At the time of his departure, the Englishman had just one year remaining on his contract with Arsenal, making the collection of £35m a strong deal for those at the Emirates for a player whose future was far from guaranteed in the favoured XI.

How many goals did Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain score?
Oxlade-Chamberlain left Arsene Wenger’s side having scored just 20 goals in 198 appearances, with only nine Premier League goals to his name in 132 league appearances, seeing him once branded as “awful” by journalist Miguel Delaney.

It was a confusing deal for a club as ‘on the up’ as Liverpool to agree to the expenditure of a versatile forward that didn’t have many goals to his name, however it quickly became apparent that Klopp saw the winger’s position further back.

For Liverpool, things seemed to click for the 5 foot 11 menace at first, as he was integrated into central midfield and given licence to roam.

The positional change seemed to work as Oxlade-Chamberlain had a hand in ten goals in his debut Premier League season at Anfield, scoring three and assisting seven in 32 appearances.

Fast-forward to the summer of 2023, and the Portsmouth-born whiz departed Liverpool having scored 18 goals in 146 appearances, a far from admirable tally but he had rounded the jaded edges of his game that had not been tamed at Arsenal.

How much did Liverpool spend on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?
The most pivotal factor of the misunderstood England international’s game was his inability to keep fit, seeing him missing almost 600 days of action at Liverpool, amounting to just under two years of availability over his six-year stay.

While the Englishman’s tally in front of goal marginally improved, his development was hugely hindered by his consistent battle with injury and subsequently, his slip down the pecking order.

Despite his unfortunate injury woes not being any fault of his own, Liverpool were drained financially by the entire deal regarding the now 30-year-old’s stay at Anfield.

In total, the Reds spent roughly £68m to accommodate the midfielder’s tenure, due to his £35m price tag plus his colossus £33m picked up in wages over the six years he was employed by the club.

When he first arrived, the former Arsenal dud was earning £4.1m-per-year, which increased to £6.2m-per-year in 2019 when he penned a contract extension, amounting to a weekly wage of £120k, via Capology.

Did Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deserve to earn so much?
Putting aside the fact that the midfielder, despite being frustrating at times, was a likeable figure on Merseyside, his presence and inability to secure consistent game time made his price tag and wage bill difficult to merit.

When dividing the £33m in wages that the Englishman received at Liverpool by the number of goals he scored in six years, the figure amounts to around £1.8m-per-goal-scored which is harrowing reading for the Reds.

This summer, the decision was made not to extend Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract as he made nine appearances in the 2022/23 campaign, resulting in him leaving as a free agent at the expiration of his £120k-per-week deal.

Today, the 30-year-old is valued at €6.2m (£5.3m), conveying his decline over the years as he progresses in a new chapter of his story at Besiktas.

With one Champions League medal and a Premier League winners medal, the midfielder departed with silverware to add to his 18 goals scored, while Liverpool continue to weigh up the benefits of his expense.

How much do other Liverpool players earn?
While Oxlade-Chamberlain’s chapter has closed, the Reds continue to have some well-paid earners at the club, despite not pulling their weight on the pitch.

The Englishman was in the top-ten earners at Liverpool based on last season’s calculations of wage payments, with another questionable name in the lucrative list.

Similarly to Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara has made a minimal impact at Anfield, despite being one of the squad’s top earners at present.

The Spaniard picks up an eye-watering £200k-per-week on Merseyside, and after three years has made only 97 appearances in all competitions following his £25m arrival from Bayern Munich.

Last season, the 32-year-old recorded 18 Premier League appearances, just nine more than Oxlade-Chamberlain, yet continues to reside as Klopp’s third-highest earner on £10.4m-per-year.

The two-time Champions League winner and seven-time Bundesliga winner will earn a total of £41.6m in wages alone as he plays out his fourth and final year of his contract with the Reds, making the total expenditure around the sum of £66m including his transfer fee.

Still, Thiago has cost Liverpool a lower amount than Oxlade-Chamberlain did during his time at the club, identifying two of the most frustrating, draining deals in the recent Anfield squad.

By leaving England, the 30-year-old closed his chapter in his homeland after representing Southampton, Arsenal and Liverpool, in a 13-year professional spell that amounted to 48 goals and £50.8m generated in wages alone.

All in all, the Portsmouth-born midfielder failed to make an adequate impact at either club, departing Anfield having rinsed the Reds for millions with little in return.

Only referee could stop Dominik Szoboszlai as Hungary offers Liverpool an Andy Robertson ‘fix’
Dominik Szoboszlai stayed true to form during the international break and may have even given Liverpool a potential Andy Robertson solution with a slight formation twist.

“THE BOY IS IMPRESSIVE” | JURGEN KLOPP ON DOMINIK SZOBOSZLAI

He may look the same, he may run the same and he may hit the ball the same as well. But the Dominik Szoboszlai we see running around in a Hungarian shirt is a little bit different from what Liverpool fans are accustomed to at Anfield.

Naturally, he is the captain of his country, and the quality of the Hungarian national team is incomparable to the level of world-class talent Liverpool possesses. That means Szoboszlai often has to refine his game, cover more ground, and dictate the play even more than he has been doing for Liverpool.

On Saturday night, Liverpool’s number eight faced arguably his biggest challenge yet as captain, facing a strong Serbian side on home soil in front of a sell-out crowd.

Living up to the boisterous atmosphere Szoboszlai naturally thrived in that environment and delivered key contributions that helped Hungary triumph in the end. Liverpool.com was in attendance for the game. Here are three things we spotted.

Only the referee could stop him

Szoboszlai has stood out with his energy for Liverpool ever since he arrived at the club. But way before he came to Anfield, he’d been doing that same kind of pressing and covering large swathes of ground for the Hungarian national team.

Saturday night was no exception. The Hungarian ran his socks off, often covering for his teammates and bombing up and down the pitch until the very dying embers of the game.

Serbia struggled to contain him. The only time he was really stopped in his tracks is when he collided with the referee, who sent him sprawling to the ground as Hungary surged forward in the 67th minute.

An irate Szoboszlai thumped the ground in frustration but with Hungary having retained the ball and capable of mustering an attack the referee never blew his whistle. Instead, he offered an apology a few seconds later when the ball had gone out of play.

Taking goal kicks

When we say Szoboszlai was everywhere on the pitch for Hungary we mean it. He didn’t just cover ground in midfield he even diligently took goal kicks on a few occasions with Hungary trying to maximize his extreme kicking power.

It’s not an experiment we are likely to see at Liverpool anytime soon, especially with Alisson’s prowess at distribution and it didn’t really reap Hungary too many benefits either.

When Szoboszlai took the goal kicks, he was missed in the middle of the park or to get on the end of knock-downs to latch onto loose balls and instigate a new attack.

Andy Robertson solution offered

At times this season, Andy Robertson has struggled in defensive transitions to cover his left-back role and make it back in time to his rightful position. With Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting into midfield that’s been exposed even more acutely at times. But Szoboszlai could offer a solution based on his performance for Hungary on Saturday night.

While he covered most of the pitches, the Hungarian often popped up on the left side of midfield where he diligently covered for Hungary’s left wing-back, Milos Kerkez. When he bombed forward to join the attack, Szoboszlai was constantly slotting into the left-back position and making sure Hungary’s left flank was not left exposed.

For Liverpool this season, Szoboszlai has been mostly used in the right-sided midfield role but Jürgen Klopp did deploy him on the left in his first-ever game for Liverpool in pre-season. He switched across there when Curtis Jones was suspended for Brighton too.

Based on his showing against Serbia, playing him there again alongside Robertson could be an interesting experiment and one that could easily provide a solution to a lot of Liverpool’s vulnerabilities with the former Hull City star’s natural inclination being to bomb forward. Szoboszlai can do the running to get back in and plug the gap.

Liverpool’s most recent signing, Ryan Gravenberch, has expressed his admiration for one of his new teammates. Gravenberch, who joined the Reds from Bayern Munich on deadline day, has been impressed by one man’s ball-striking ability, describing it as “crazy”.

The 21-year-old midfielder is part of Jürgen Klopp’s revamped midfield, which also includes summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Szoboszlai, 22, has made a significant impact since joining Liverpool, featuring in all of the team’s games this season and scoring two goals.

His stunning long-range strike against Leicester in the Carabao Cup was a standout moment. Gravenberch has praised Szoboszlai’s ability to excite Liverpool fans about the future.

“I think it was Dom Szoboszlai,” Gravenberch told Sky Sports when asked which player surprised him in training. “Because this guy’s shot is… it’s crazy! Also sometimes in training, sometimes we shoot after training and it’s like ‘one, two, three’, they go all in. Crazy things. So I think it’s Dom with his shot.”

After a challenging 2022/23 campaign that saw Liverpool miss out on Champions League qualification and fail to win a major trophy, the team is determined to bounce back.

Under Klopp’s guidance, they have shown significant improvement this season, currently sitting just three points behind Premier League leaders Tottenham in the title race. Liverpool has also performed well in Europe, winning both of its Europa League games and reaching the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Gravenberch also detailed how Klopp and Virgil van Dijk played influential roles in convincing him to join Liverpool. Van Dijk, who was appointed as the team’s captain during the summer, spoke highly of the club, assuring Gravenberch that he would have ample playing time. The midfielder, considered one of Europe’s most talented young players, revealed that Klopp’s plans and vision for the team were instrumental in his decision to move to Anfield.

Liverpool.com says: Gravenberch has made a really good start to life at Liverpool, just as Szoboszlai has. There have been very good signs in moments from Mac Allister as well.

ESPN pundit claims Jurgen Klopp is having to hide Liverpool player

Jordan Harris
Sun 15 October 2023 8:15, UK
ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno has insisted that Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot be the most valuable player in the Liverpool squad as he believes that Jurgen Klopp has had to hide him to protect him defensively.

Moreno was speaking on ESPN after journalist Sam Tighe put the England international at number three in his own list of Liverpool’s most important players this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to divide a lot of opinion. Last season was a really tough one for the 25-year-old as he seemed to come in for an endless amount of criticism over his defensive frailties.

Trent Alexander-Arnold criticised again
He remains one of the very best passers of the ball. Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Ben Foster said that Alexander-Arnold was outrageous in Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa.

That may help explain why Tighe put Alexander-Arnold at number three on the list behind Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker.

Moreno was clearly baffled by how high Alexander-Arnold found himself. And he insisted that there was no way that the academy graduate could be considered their third most valuable player.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“Here’s the thing about Trent: Jurgen Klopp has had to find a place for him on the field to hide him. So that defensively he doesn’t get exposed. If there’s a player that you have to hide on the field, then he cannot be your most valuable player,” he told ESPN.

“The reason that Trent Alexander-Arnold is not playing right-back for Liverpool is because he is horrendous defensively. So they’ve had to find a different way for him to play.”

Jurgen Klopp right to try and play to Liverpool star’s strengths
Moreno is extremely unfair on Alexander-Arnold in his comments. Yes, he is not the best defender. And some of the mistakes he made, particularly last season, would have led to many players being dropped a lot sooner.

However, he is absolutely world-class going forward. It is almost ridiculous to suggest that Jurgen Klopp is hiding Alexander-Arnold rather than working on a way to play to his strengths.

If he felt that he needed hiding, Klopp would not be working so hard to get him in the team. It would just be easier to drop him altogether.

It is no different to a manager moving a player around the attack to find their best spot. If there was a way to keep Alexander-Arnold in your team, why would you not do everything you could to make that happen?
