Arsenal tipped to be more likely than Liverpool to sign £44m forward who Harry Kane loves

A fresh report has suggested Arsenal as a more likely destination than Liverpool for Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane.

That’s according to The Athletic, which claims that London could be a more likely landing place for Leroy Sane should he return to the Premier League.

Arsenal and Liverpool have both been linked with a surprise move for Sane in an attempt to lure the winger back to England.

Indeed, Mikel Arteta is searching for extra depth on the right-hand side and a player who can come in to compete with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

As for Liverpool, they could face the prospect of losing Mohamed Salah next summer, with Saudi interest expected to be revisited.

Sky Germany reported over the weekend that Jurgen Klopp believes he can tempt the winger to move to Anfield.

Now, it seems that Sane is more likely to head to London should he return to the Premier League.

Report suggests Arsenal more likely than Liverpool to sign Sane
The Athletic reports that while Liverpool have been linked with a move for Sane, it may be that London is the most likely destination for Sane.

It’s noted that while the German winger was spotted in Manchester recently, a move to the English capital could be a ‘trump card’ if one of London’s top clubs make a move, with Arsenal linked.

Sane left Man City to join Bayern Munich back in the summer of 2020 for a fee worth around £44 million.

The 27-year-old is enjoying an exceptional campaign in Germany, having registered 14 goal involvements in 11 Bundesliga appearances.

He’s linked up brilliantly with former Tottenham star Harry Kane, with the duo instantly forming an exciting partnership.

Indeed, Kane has already raved about Sane just months after linking up with the former City winger.

“He has great pace and outstanding power,” he told Der Rekordmeister. “Leroy is probably our best player so far this season.

“He is fantastic. Even today, when it was 2-2, I had the feeling that he was the player who would lift us up again.

“He is such an important player for us with his skills. Today he made two assists for me again, which is great. I hope we keep this connection.” as quoted by GFNG.

It certainly would be a huge surprise to see Sane move back to the Premier League given his recent form for Bayern.

The former City man seems settled in Munich and the Bundesliga giants are prioritising a new deal for the winger.

Nevertheless, he would be an excellent coup for either Arsenal or Liverpool as he’s undoubtedly a world-class talent.

Chido Obi-Martin: Arsenal have already agreed terms with 10-goal striker sensation
The prolific teenage frontman hit double figures against Liverpool at the weekend with his future already secure

Arsenal have already secured the future of viral sensation Chido Obi-Martin.

The 15-year-old made headlines at the weekend after scoring 10 goals as Arsenal’s Under-16s beat Liverpool 14-3.

The striker had been tipped for big things long before his stunning display on Saturday and it is understood that he agreed scholarship terms with Arsenal last year.

Obi-Martin will be part of the scholars for the 2024-25 season and can sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 in November of next year.

Tying players to scholarship terms is vital for clubs as prior to that they are able to move in exchange for compensation.

Arsenal had to fight hard this summer to keep striker Ethan Nwaneri, but eventually fended off interest from Chelsea and Manchester City to agree scholarship terms.

Obi-Martin may only be 15, but he has already represented Arsenal at U21 level and scored a hat-trick for the U18s against Southampton in September.

Already standing at over 6ft tall, the striker has caught the eye for his size and pace – which is partly the reason why he is already being pushed to play with higher age groups.

The international break, coupled with the fact that the U17 World Cup is currently ongoing, meant there were less academy games than usual at the weekend, so Obi-Martin turned out for Arsenal’s U16s and went viral on social media after scoring 10 times.

Roberto Firmino father dies after heart attack on family trip with ex-Liverpool star
The father of former Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has died aged 62

Roberto Firmino and his father during a recent trip to Dubai

The father of former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has passed away aged 62 after suffering a heart attack in Dubai.

Jose Roberto Cordeiro de Oliveira had travelled to the Middle East to enjoy a family trip with Firmino and the rest of his family during the current international break.

According to Firmino’s wife, Larissa, Firmino Snr passed away during his sleep on November 18 after suffering from “tiredness and a cough”.

Mrs Firmino paid tribute to the 62-year-old in the early hours of Monday morning and revealed that the player’s father and mother had been due to move to Saudi Arabia this week to start their “new lives” following the striker’s summer transfer from Liverpool to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.

Writing to her 534,000 Instagram followers, Mrs Firmino said: “What a void you left here, my father-in-law. What pain is this? It was okay!

“Our plans were for us to have our first family trip together. Every year we received a visit from our parents, but we wanted quality time, an affectionate memory to last forever.

“And so it was! They arrived 3 days before, got their Saudi visas, walked around and after that we arrived to live together the best 4 days of our lives, which were interrupted halfway through. Something was different, and it really was! Even in a rush with 14 people, everything was calm, we were all very happy and impressed by the beauty of this place.

“Roberto, oh my love, you were feeling something, my eyes caught the amount of care you were taking with him, always walking by his side, helping him get into the van, taking selfies together, you loved him so much these two days. On November 18th, the grandparents were children again with their granddaughters, we went to an amusement park, what an incredible day!

“Bel wanted to go on a rollercoaster with us and it left us with our hair standing on end, we knew it was too radical for him and we were afraid that something might happen, the safety lock didn’t close and so he didn’t go. However, the danger that day was not the rollercoaster, the danger of that day was tiredness and a cough before going to sleep.

“My God, it’s so hard to digest it all! Our hearts are so grateful for the opportunity to say such a beautiful farewell, but because of it, the pain is even greater. Bureaucracies, uncertainties, make the days longer. Seeing the suffering of my mother-in-law, Roberto and my sister-in-law crushes my heart, I wanted to take this pain away from them.

“My God, what strong and sensitive people, with each breath a despair and with each despair a breath of let’s rise again because we trust in our God. I learn so much from them. We wanted more! Our plans were for us to return to Arabia together so that we could present our new life to our parents. And now our plans are one day at a time, learning to live with longing.

“Thank you my father-in-law, thank you crazy for every moment together. See you soon!”

Firmino Snr was a regular both at Anfield and at away games during his son’s eight-year stay at Liverpool from 2015 to 2023. His son paid tribute to his father in his newly-released book ‘Si Senor – My Liverpool Years’.

“My father, Jose, was my childhood hero, an inspiration and an example,” wrote the 32-year-old. “A generous, serious, honest man and dedicated to his family.”

Firmino’s boyhood club, Clube de Regatas Brasil, paid tribute to Firmino Snr over the weekend, writing on social media: “The Clube de Regatas Brasil deeply regrets the death of Jose Roberto Cordeiro de Oliveira, father of Roberto Firmino, who left us this weekend.

“He’s always been a big Galo de Campina fan and was very proud of his son being unveiled in football with the whirlpool shirt. Rest in peace, Jose Roberto.”

Liverpool legend is now “turning heads” at Anfield ahead of possible return
BY
HENRY JACKSON
PUBLISHED 2 HOURS AGO
Have they found Klopp’s successor?

A Liverpool legend is believed to be “turning heads” at the club as his reputation continues to rise, ahead of what could be a very popular return to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool future
The Reds have enjoyed a wonderful period under Jurgen Klopp, who arrived at the club in October 2015, and has inspired the Reds to so much trophy success. The German ended Liverpool’s long and painful wait for a Premier League title back in 2019/20, following a remarkable season that saw his team only drop two points in the opening 27 fixtures, and he has also tasted Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup success.

There will come a time when Klopp eventually leaves his post as manager, however, in what will be a sad day for anyone of a Reds persuasion, and the Liverpool boss’ current deal expires at the end of the 2025/26 season.

It remains to be seen if the 56-year-old will end up extending his stay – many no doubt hope that he will – but the club will surely be thinking about eventual successors for the legendary German, ensuring they bring in the right person to take the team forward.

Liverpool eyeing Xabi Alonso as next manager
Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Ben Jacobs admitted that Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso is seen as a potential replacement for Klopp one day, with the Spaniard excelling at Bayer Leverkusen currently.

“My understanding is that Alonso is obviously focused on Bayer Leverkusen and not getting ahead of himself, they’re top of the Bundesliga at the time of recording.

“He’s done absolutely phenomenally at that football club, so everyone else is talking about Alonso’s future, but Alonso himself is only focused at the moment on Leverkusen and rightly so, because to get a top manager job, you don’t put yourself in the shop window after 11 league games, you put yourself in the shop window at the end of a season or seasons when you’ve won silverware.

“But there’s no doubt that Alonso is turning heads at the moment and that includes with two of his former clubs, Liverpool, and Real Madrid. I think less so Bayern Munich at this stage, because Thomas Tuchel is starting to settle, but obviously, if a vacancy ever opens there, then we know that Alonso will be linked with it as well. But the Liverpool possibility is maybe the most interesting.”

Alonso certainly looks like a brilliant young manager who is already making waves in the game, considering he has guided Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table, only failing to win one of their first 11 matches.

The 41-year-old was such a popular figure at Liverpool in his playing days, not only possessing endless quality, but also understanding what it means to represent a club of such tradition and stature. His influence in the 2005 Champions League final will never be forgotten, with his rebound effort from a penalty miss making it 3-3 on the night against AC Milan.

Assuming the classy Alonso continues to thrive in the coming years, he definitely looks like a standout current option to be Klopp’s eventual replacement, although the majority of Reds fans will hope that the latter remains in charge well beyond 2026.

Premier League FFP charges for Man City could cause ‘mutiny’ as UEFA warned
Manchester City are preparing their evidence to refute strong accusations from the Premier League that could change the game

UEFA have been warned that any outcome from the allegations Manchester City have been charged with by the Premier League will ‘almost certainly cause serious unrest among its member clubs to a point of mutiny’.

The issue has been brought into sharper focus since last week’s ruling that saw Everton deducted 10 points by the league for a breach of Financial Fair Play rules, with a new wave of speculation on how that decision could impact on any forthcoming sanctions that potentially heading City’s way, if the case against them is proved.

Earlier this year, City were hit with a string of grave accusations from the Premier League, including nearly a decade of misrepresenting their finances to the relevant football authorities. The club vehemently deny any suggestion they have not adhered to competition rules, and will be able to defend their position at an independent tribunal that will assess the evidence.

ALSO READ: Guardiola has already responded to Everton’s pressure over Man City charges

The lengthy investigation by the Premier League followed a similar look into City by UEFA, who concluded in 2020 that the Blues had breached their financial fair play rules and should be banned from the Champions League for two years. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned this decision – the only thing City were deemed guilty of was not co-operating with the UEFA investigation, which the club insisted was flawed – but this verdict was not enough to clear City’s name in the court of public opinion.

As well as having other clubs keen to see further checks against the Blues, the Premier League has also been operating at a time when its own ability to govern has been questioned by outside forces. It was observed by many that the shock decision to lay such serious allegations against the English champions – the news even surprised the Premier League’s own website, which initially carried incorrect listings of the exact charges against City – came just 24 hours before the British government were set to publish a White Paper on football governance reform.

A snap public opinion poll at the time of 1,000 football fans revealed three in every four think City broke the rules, and Pep Guardiola hit out that the club had not been allowed to defend themselves before being publicly condemned. As the club prepares a lengthy legal defence for the independent panel, it feels inevitable that any decision will cause enormous consequences for the game and numerous clubs fighting to be the best.

Writing in the International Sports Law Review, Dr Gregory Ioannidis and Dr Dan Plumley write: “Although the authors shall refrain from making any predictions as to the outcome of the present matter, one thing is certain, and that is the danger the autonomy of sport is facing regarding its self-regulation.

“There are different dynamics present that control the decision-making of all stakeholders. Whatever the result of the present dispute, it is almost certain that UEFA will face serious unrest from its member clubs to a point of mutiny.

“The financial prowess of football clubs such as Manchester City, with the expert lawyers taking apart the inefficiency and complexity of the regulations (contra preferentem comes to mind), can only demonstrate how weak such regulations are in their application.”

While any outcome is likely to kick off another fierce debate on the worth of financial fair play rules and the value in independent regulation, the hearing will have serious and material consequences for City and the Premier League. The charges are unprecedented in their nature, and so vast that industry experts expect it to be years before the matter is resolved.

From what little is known publicly about the case, and findings from the CAS verdict, it is entirely possible that City could be found guilty of not co-operating with another investigation. However, Ioannidis (leading sports lawyer and professor at Sheffield Hallam University) and Plumley (sports finance expert and also at Sheffield Hallam University) contend that the Premier League must instead prove its most damning allegations – held to a higher standard than a normal civil case because of their seriousness – to satisfy the judging panel.

“It would not be good enough for the Premier League to argue that Manchester City failed to co-operate with the Premier League’s investigation,” they write. “The Premier League would have to go beyond this, by proving that Manchester City, as a matter of fact and evidence, failed to produce accurate financial information (and/or lied about it) in relation to their revenue, within the meaning of the current regulations.

“This is not an easy burden for the Premier League. But it should not be easy, because the allegations produced are of a very serious nature.

“Should the Premier League be able to discharge such a burden, the burden will then shift to Manchester City, who would, in turn, have to respond, and attempt to discharge it. The sliding scale, therefore, of the standard of proof, will be in full force and action here.

“Advisors must, therefore, make a note that the weight of the evidence and the manner in which it is presented, may be the deciding factors in the final decision making of the Panel.”

Luis Diaz father makes Barcelona transfer claim as he admits Liverpool forward’s ‘dream’
Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, who scored twice for Colombia against Brazil, has been tentatively linked with a move to Barcelona

Luis Daiz’s father has spoken out on the reports linking the Liverpool forward with Barcelona.

The parents of the Colombian winger became known by Liverpool fans and the footballing world as a whole after they were the victims of a kidnapping. Diaz’s father was eventually released by his captors, just over a week ago, and was in attendance to see his son score twice in an emotional comeback win over Brazil on Friday morning.

Despite the turmoil that the 26-year-old was subjected to in his personal life, Diaz still managed to salvage a point for Liverpool with a late goal against Luton earlier this month, upon his return to the team. His two goals for Colombia further highlight why the former Porto forward has become a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

His performances have led to shock claims that Barcelona could be interested in signing the Liverpool forward. Diaz’s father was asked about his son possibly moving to Barcelona in the future and admitted that he has always been a supporter of the Catalan giants.

“[The] truth is that I know very little about Barcelona at the moment,” Diaz Snr. told Win Sports, as reported by Sport Witness. “It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona fan and it would be his dream to go there. So far I would like to thank Porto and Liverpool for the way they welcomed him and received him.

“Luis is a player who finds it easy to win over because of the way he is, because of his humility, his work, his dedication, he is a very disciplined player, thank God. There would be no problem if Luis came to Barcelona because it is a top team and one of the best in the world.”

It is unlikely that Diaz will let any transfer speculation affect his performances, though, as he looks to add to his five goal contributions so far this season. His brace against Brazil will also be a positive sign for Jurgen Klopp ahead of Liverpool’s important clash with Manchester City on Saturday, November 25.

Jurgen Klopp will be unimpressed with £43m Liverpool man after ‘disappointing’ int’l display

Jurgen Klopp is clearly a big fan of Cody Gakpo, yet the Liverpool winger didn’t cover himself in glory last night against the Republic of Ireland for the Netherlands.

The attacker was disappointing in the Dutch side’s 1-0 win against the Irish as Wout Weghorst’s early strike was enough to punch the Netherlands’ ticket to next summer’s Euros.

Despite a successful night for Ronal Koeman’s side, it was one to forget for Gakpo, who received some harsh criticism from the Dutch press having unimpressed and failed to do much.

‘Disappointing’ Gakpo could cause Liverpool problem with Klopp
Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool FC – Premier League

Handed a 5.5 rating by Football Oranje and labelled as ‘disappointing’ by Voetbal Primeur, it’s safe to say that Gakpo wasn’t at his best in last night’s clash against Ireland.

And such a performance could cause a problem at Liverpool for Klopp, especially heading into next weekend’s mammoth Premier League clash against Manchester City.

With Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all on fire on international duty this month, Gakpo faces being left out on the bench as we inch towards next week’s showdown at the Etihad Stadium.

And last night’s performance did little to give Klopp much of a selection headache, with Gakpo now liley to start on the bench against City next Saturday.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

With Gibraltar next up for the Netherlands, it’s easy to think that Gakpo will be raring to go against the European minnows, who made history this weekend for all the wrong reasons in their 14-0 loss to France.

Indeed, Gakpo can make quite the statement on Tuesday night if given the start by Koeman, with the winger no doubt keen to return to the scoresheet for his national team.

And Gibraltar could not be a more perfect opponent, with the £43m Liverpool winger likely to be already eyeing up this fixture as a big one to boost his confidence.

‘Absolutely’… Fabrizio Romano says £34m player won’t leave Liverpool in January

Charles Jones
Sat 18 November 2023 9:15, UK
Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s most important players.

The Egyptian is the Reds’ main man. He’s their top scorer and main creator, and if Liverpool are to win any major trophies this season, it feels as though Salah will be at the heart of that.

However, in recent months, there has been a bit of worry about the winger’s future.

Salah was targeted by the Saudi Pro League in the summer with a huge bid, and there have been plenty of suggestions that the Saudis will be back in for the attacker in January.

However, speaking on Kick, Fabrizio Romano has delivered a reassuring update on Salah, claiming that he absolutely sees the left-footer staying at Anfield in the January transfer window.

Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty Images
Salah staying
Romano shared what he knows about the £34m man.

“In January, yeah, in January I see him staying, absolutely. I see him staying and being a part of the Liverpool project. Absolutely, nothing to mention on that. I don’t think anything can happen in the January transfer window. At the moment the message from Liverpool is the same as we had in the summer, they want to count on Mo Salah, a crucial player for them. Remember they received important approaches from Mo Salah in the summer, they offered a package of around £150m, an incredible amount of money, and Liverpool said no, so I don’t see them selling Salah halfway through a season, a very important season for Liverpool,” Romano said.

No chance
Romano can’t see Salah leaving in January, and, to be honest, neither can we.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
The attacker is way too important to this Liverpool team, and they surely won’t sell him in the middle of what looks like being a season where they can challenge for a title.

The Reds have started this season fantastically, and they’re not going to derail their own title push by letting one of their most important players go halfway through the season.

Whether or not this stance changes in the summer remains to be seen.

‘Not a good performance’… Nation’s media left unimpressed with 24-year-old Liverpool player last night

Milo Clay
Sun 19 November 2023 7:45, UK
The Dutch media was left unimpressed with Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo’s display for the Netherlands last night.

Holland picked up a 1-0 win over Ireland thanks to an early goal from Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo started from the off.

The 24-year-old played in an advanced midfield role just behind the striker but failed to impress on the night.

Indeed, Gakpo was replaced by Joey Veerman in the second-half after an underwhelming display.

And it’s fair to say the Dutch media were critical of the Liverpool star’s latest international performance.

Dutch media unimpressed with Gakpo’s latest international showing
Football Oranje handed Gakpo a 5.5 rating for his display and noted that he was wasteful in front of goal last night.

The outlet wrote: “Not a good performance from the Liverpool man, who was the first to be substituted.

“Snatched at shots and even got in his teammate’s way at times. He did create chances but not at the level we expect from him.”

Voetbal Primeur were slightly more generous as they gave the Dutchman a six out of 10 rating.

The outlet notes that Gakpo was just beginning to find his feet in the game before being replaced around the hour mark.

They wrote: “Before half time Gakpo was searching, in the second half he seemed to loosen up.

“With his speed he regularly managed to escape the Irish defense. Yet Gakpo was the first to leave, much to his own disappointment.”

Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images
Gakpo has struggled to break back into Liverpool’s front-three after picking up an injury against Tottenham back in September.

The former PSV man has been used in a midfield role on occasion this season, with Jurgen Klopp naming him in his midfield three in the win over Brentford last weekend.

Klopp has already lauded Gakpo for being an extremely versatile player. But you get the feeling that his best position lies further forward, rather than in midfield.

While he wasn’t at his best for Ronald Koeman’s side last night, that is probably down to a lack of minutes at Liverpool since his return from injury.

‘Brings so much joy’… Alisson says £12m Liverpool player is so ‘fantastic’

Giuseppe Labellarte
Sat 18 November 2023 20:45, UK
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has described Reds teammate Kostas Tsimikas as a “fantastic” footballer and person.

The Liverpool stopper sung his colleague’s praises to Premier League Productions, saying he’s an absolute joy to work with.

Tsimikas has been at Liverpool since August 2020, when he joined the Reds from Olympiakos in a deal reportedly worth around £12million.

The 27-year-old has been a useful squad player for Jurgen Klopp, often deputising for Andrew Robertson.

To date, Tsimikas has made 71 appearances for Liverpool, also notching up 14 assists in red.

Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images
He went into the international break on a high note, registering two assists for the Reds in a 3-0 win over Brentford.

As well as stepping up on the pitch, Tsimikas is a hugely popular player in the Liverpool dressing room.

Alisson said: “He’s a lovely guy. I think he brings so much joy to our team every day here.

“It’s a pleasure for me to work together here with him.

“Not talking about his qualities as a player, he is a fantastic player as well; top skills, but as a person [he’s] even better.”

TBR View
It’s so good to hear Tsimikas earn praise from his teammates not only for his playing skills, but as a person.

Camaraderie is important in any club’s dressing room. You need to have the right characters, and Tsimikas certainly fits the bill.

With Robertson out of contention, the Greece international has stepped up and will look to continue to do so as Liverpool aim for glory following a tricky season last time out.

OPINIONGareth Southgate just proved Jürgen Klopp right again as 2/10 rating shows Liverpool truth
England didn’t exactly inspire with its performance against Malta at Wembley, with Gareth Southgate once again proving Jürgen Klopp right in the process.

Liverpool fans’ apathy toward the England team might have dissipated a little when they saw Trent Alexander-Arnold’s name on the teamsheet on Friday night. So often snubbed by Gareth Southgate, Reds everywhere have regularly been left perplexed as to how the 25-year-old has just 22 caps to his name.

Any of those same fans who were encouraged to watch the proceedings at Wembley would have been regretting that decision soon though. And it certainly was not through the fault of Alexander-Arnold.

A turgid display saw England labor to a 2-0 win over Malta, a side ranked 171st in FIFA’s world rankings between such football powerhouses as Fiji and Bermuda. Despite going 1-0 up early on through a fortunate own goal, the Three Lions didn’t register a shot on target until after the hour mark — it won’t surprise you to learn that it was Alexander-Arnold who broke that particular deadlock.

The Liverpool academy product was one of the few positives to emerge for England at Wembley. The same can’t be said for his former club teammate though.

Jordan Henderson had another night to forget as he was given the nod yet again by Southgate. The England boss’ loyalty to the former Liverpool captain has baffled many following his move to Saudi Arabia, where he is playing in a far inferior league to the Premier League, and his recent performances for the national team have not done anything to quell any disquiet.

Having been booed following a subpar performance against Australia last month, Henderson was once again poor against Malta last night. His display even garnered a two out of 10 rating from Goal.

While that might seem harsh, you certainly couldn’t make the argument for the 33-year-old to receive a much higher rating. His slow and ponderous play rather summed up England’s display, and it was telling that the Three Lions looked much brighter once he had been substituted in the second half.

If Henderson was hoping to make a point to Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp, then he has unquestionably failed. The midfielder suggested in an interview with The Athletic he left Anfield due to no longer feeling wanted at the club, a claim Klopp didn’t deny.

“Hendo told the truth, we talked and I told him there was a possibility of not playing regularly,” Klopp said in September (via The Standard). “If Hendo would have performed, he’d have played. I thought it was important to talk openly. Hendo is a super guy but he is not great when he is not playing.

“He was my captain. I didn’t want to lock horns because he thought he would be starting. He took that to mean we didn’t want him here. I couldn’t tell him he would start and that is why it is better that he moved on.”

Thus far, Southgate’s decisions to continue including Henderson in his squads have not been vindicated, and have only proven why Klopp made the right call in letting him exit Liverpool, even if it did leave the club short in the engine room.

Liverpool has since shown marked improvements with a younger and more dynamic midfield in place. How long will it be before Southgate recognizes he needs to do the same, and come to the same conclusion as Klopp?

Mac Allister binned for £70m signing in Liverpool’s dream starting XI after Jan
BY
ROBBIE WALLS
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
A look at how the Reds could shape up if they were to make three key additions in the winter window.

harvey-elliott-alexis-mac-allister-liverpool-opinion
After faltering last season, Liverpool have come roaring back this time around to put themselves firmly in title contention alongside the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, with Jurgen Klopp’s men currently just a point off the top with just one defeat in 12 Premier League outings thus far.

Such form is a far cry from the limp showings that saw the Merseysiders slip out of the top four last term, with a repeat scenario now looking increasingly unlikely, even with a competitive chasing pack that includes the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

With his side currently in a strong position in those coveted Champions League berths, Klopp certainly won’t be getting complacent, however, with fresh reinforcements perhaps needed in January to help maintain this impressive momentum.

With that in mind – and with transfer rumours already beginning to swirl with the winter window looming – here’s a look at how the Anfield outfit could line up come February, if a handful of key signings are to be made…

1
GK – Alisson
alisson-premier-league-liverpool-klopp-market-value-roma
It would take something frankly remarkable for Alisson not to still be the undisputed first-choice under Klopp in 2024, with the Brazilian colossus having deservedly cemented his place as the go-to man in the sticks ever since his arrival from Roma back in 2018.

Lauded as the “best in the world” by teammate Andy Robertson, the 31-year-old has conceded just ten goals in the league so far this season, helping his side to record the joint-best defensive record in the division – alongside the Gunners.

2
RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
ryan-kent-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-opinion
Trent Alexander-Arnold is another who has been a regular fixture in the side during a golden period under Klopp for Liverpool, having now chalked up 16 goals and a staggering 75 assists in 287 appearances for the club at senior level.

The academy graduate has yet again been an attacking outlet form his full-back berth this season with three assists in 14 games in all competitions, having also relished the opportunity to take on an inverted role at times in the middle of the park.

While an able deputy could well be needed – with usual centre-back Joe Gomez the only other senior option at right-back – any January addition is incredibly unlikely to dislodge the Englishman from his starting berth.

3
CB – Goncalo Inacio
goncalo-inacio-portugal
The first new face in this hypothetical XI is Sporting CP and Portugal’s Goncalo Inacio, with both the Reds – and rivals Manchester United – said to be scouting the promising centre-back ahead of a possible future swoop.

With Ibrahima Konate regularly hampered by injury and with Joel Matip currently in the final year of his contract, a new addition in that department could be essential, even despite the club’s impressive defensive record of late.

In the 22-year-old Inacio, Klopp could find a long-term solution at the heart of the backline, with the in-demand ace particularly adept at playing out from the back, as he ranks in at least the top 2% for attempted passes, progressive passes and progressives carries per 90 among those in his position in leagues comparable to the Primeira Liga.

4
CB – Virgil van Dijk
Salah-VanDijk-Liverpool-Premier-League
The newly-appointed captain following the departure of Jordan Henderson over the summer, Virgil van Dijk remains a truly influential and imperious presence at centre-back.

Described by Ben Foster as the “best defender that has ever lived” when in his pomp, the towering Dutchman may have lost a “yard off pace” since his ACL injury back in 2020 – as per Foster – yet he is still integral in helping to marshal a watertight defence.

5
LB – Andy Robertson
andrea-cambiaso-andrew-robertson-liverpool-transfer-premier-league
While currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, the expectation is that Robertson will be able to make an eagerly-awaited return in the new year, with Klopp currently having to rely on Kostas Tsimikas or Gomez to fill the void at left-back.

Like his colleague on the opposite side – Alexander-Arnold – the Scotland skipper is also a regular attacking outlet down the flanks, having notably averaged 2.6 key passes per game this season in the Premier League, more than any of his teammates.

6
CDM – Joao Palhinha
Joao Palhinha
Having seen Fabinho depart for the riches of Saudi Arabia over the summer, the Reds are still seeking a quality solution at the base of the midfield, with 30-year-old summer signing, Wataru Endo, yet to truly convince after starting just two league games this term.

As such, with recent reports linking the club with a move for Fulham’s Joao Palhinha – who is valued at £70m – Klopp could well find that missing piece of the puzzle, with the Portuguese menace an undoubted “monster” in the centre of the park – as hailed by broadcaster Adrian Clarke.

Rumours are rife regarding Fluminense’s Andre, but Palhinha has already shown his class in English football, notably ranking at the top of the charts for the most tackles made in the division in 2023/24.

That addition could well spell bad news for Alexis Mac Allister, with the World Cup winner – who has lined up in that deeper role this season – seemingly not a natural fit as a midfield destroyer, with his average of 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game in the league this term simply dwarfed by Palhinha (6.9).

7
CM – Dominik Szoboszlai
tyler-morton-dominik-szoboszlai-liverpool-opinion
As the Hungarian has himself admitted, there is already talk that the former RB Leipzig man is the “new Steven Gerrard” following a blistering start to life at Anfield, the 23-year-old having scored twice and recorded two assists so far this season.

With the likes of Henderson, James Milner and Naby Keita having moved on to pastures new in the most recent window, the £60m man has provided a delightful, youthful exuberance in the centre of the park and looks like a figure to build the side around for years to come.

8
CM – Ryan Gravenberch
wataru-endo-ryan-gravenberch-liverpool-opinion-2
With so many options in central midfield – including the likes of Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott – it is a tricky ask trying to settle on a figure to round off this trio, yet Ryan Gravenberch could well get the nod.

The one-time Ajax man has had to bide his time for a regular role in the side, yet has begun to flourish in a Liverpool jersey, having even been likened to a certain Patrick Vieira by club legend, Jamie Carragher.

With the sturdy presence of Palhinha behind him, the Dutchman would be able to bomb forward at will – with such attacking quality having been seen by his two goals in three Europa League games this season.

9
RW – Mohamed Salah
salah-liverpool-brentford-premier-league-klopp
While the question remains as to whether Saudi interest will be renewed in Mohamed Salah in January, it would be a real shock if the Egyptian was allowed to depart midway through the campaign, particularly amid Liverpool’s strong league position.

In the event that the former Roma man does stay put, Klopp will be able to continue to rely on his main source of goals and creativity, with the 31-year-old already posting ten goals and four assists in 12 league outings to date.

10
ST – Darwin Nunez
dominic-solanke-darwin-nunez-liverpool-opinion-1
There is no question that Liverpool still need more from Darwin Nunez – as he has already missed ten big chances in the top-flight this term – yet the Uruguayan does appear to be making impressive strides in his second season at Anfield, with seven goals and six assists in all competitions.

The former Benfica man does have competition from the likes of Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota, although he is the more natural centre-forward of the trio, with Klopp likely to continue to place faith in his club-record capture.

11
LW – Leroy Sane
liverpool-leroy-sane-premier-league-transfers-mo-salah
It would undoubtedly be ambitious to bring Leroy Sane back to England, although the one-time Manchester City man has been mooted to make the move to Merseyside in recent weeks, with the Bayern Munich speedster having caught fire again in Germany.

Under the watchful eye of Thomas Tuchel, the 27-year-old – who can operate on either wing – has already posted eight goals and seven assists across all fronts in 2023/24, although his long-term future with the Bundesliga giants remains in doubt, with just over 18 months left on his current deal.

Of course, Liverpool do already have Luis Diaz to slot in on the left, yet the Colombian international has recorded just four goals and one assist in 14 games this term – albeit while enduring a horrific off-field ordeal of late.

As such, bringing in a former Premier League winner like Sane – who contributed to 25 league goals in the 2017/18 campaign at the Etihad – could provide that extra sprinkling of star quality.

Liverpool’s dream starting XI after January, in full – GK – Alisson; RB – Alexander-Arnold, CB – Inacio, CB – Van Dijk, LB – Robertson; CDM – Palhinha, CM – Szoboszlai, CM – Gravenberch; RW – Mo Salah, ST – Darwin Nunez, LW – Leroy Sane.

The key players Liverpool could be without against Manchester City amid squad omissions
Liverpool will face Manchester City in their next Premier League fixture but Jurgen Klopp could be without several key players

Liverpool could be without several key players for their upcoming game with Manchester City.

It has been a fixture that has regularly carried added importance for both clubs in recent years and this season is no different. Liverpool’s strong start to the season has put Jurgan Klopp’s side just one point behind City in top spot after 12 league games, suggesting that the Reds are set to mount another title challenge.

Following the international break, Jurgen Klopp’s side will head to the Etihad as his new-look team seek to prove they are genuine title contenders. They may have to take on Pep Guardiola’s team without a number of key players, though, as Liverpool deal with their injury list.

Here’s a look at who may not be available for the Reds against Manchester City:

In defence, there are doubts over Ibrahima Konate’s availability for the City clash. The centre-back, who missed the recent win over Brentford and also suffered an injury during the October international break, has not travelled with France for the current set of fixtures. While an official explanation of his injury has not been shared, French reporters have suggested that Konate is recovering from a slight hamstring issue.

Joe Gomez was another absentee from the squad that recorded the 3-0 victory over Brentford. The versatile defender was a surprise omission, given his impressive start to the season, and there was similarly no official diagnosis shared by Liverpool, raising doubts over his potential availability against Manchester City.

Andy Robertson remains sidelined after undergoing surgery on the dislocated shoulder he suffered while on Scotland duty. The left-back is expected to make his return in the New Year.

Moving into midfield, Curtis Jones could return to the squad to face Guardiola’s team. Jones picked up a low grade hamstring injury in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win over Bournemouth.Another positive for the Reds is that Ryan Gravenberch is expected to be available after missing several games with a slight knee injury, prior to the international break,

However, the Reds will continue to be without long-term absentee Thiago Alcantara, who is recovering from pelvis surgery. Similarly, no timeline has been given for the return of young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic after he picked up a fresh injury setback, having previously seen his breakthrough season cut short last term.

Your morning Liverpool headlines for Saturday, November 18.

Luis Diaz father makes Barcelona transfer claim as he admits Liverpool forward’s ‘dream’

Luis Daiz’s father has spoken out on the reports linking the Liverpool forward with Barcelona.

So far I would like to thank Porto and Liverpool for the way they welcomed him and received him.”

Luis Diaz makes emotional statement and sends Alisson message after stunning display

Luis Diaz has highlighted the support from Liverpool team-mate Alisson following his inspirational performance for Colombia against Brazil.

Alisson Becker was in goal for Brazil after Ederson pulled out with an ankle injury. Despite the defeat, the shot-stopper embraced Diaz as the cameras caught the exchange between the Reds teammates.

“Alisson very happy, he is a great person. He accompanied me in the last 15 days, he is a great human being and he helped me get through this difficult moment,” Diaz said speaking after their win.

“Thank God, we have gone through hard times, but like life, we deserved this victory because we have made a great process , not only us players, but also the coach. Dedicate the victory to the people.”
