Argentine national media deliver interesting verdict on Alexis Mac Allister’s performance for them last night

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has been praised for his part in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Ecuador last night.

The World Champions were once again thankful to their little magician, Lionel Messi, the Inter Miami man burying a wonderful match-winning free-kick.

But in amongst that, Mac Allister got a 77 minute run-out, too. And according to Argentine outlet TyC Sports, the 24-year-old did a good job.

In a first half that was described as collectively ‘weak,’ it’s claimed that Alexis was actually the Albiceleste’s best player on the pitch.

Then, interestingly, it appears as though the Liverpool man was moved into defensive midfield. Having moved to what the Argentine’s call the ‘5’ position, he reportedly excelled.

Sitting deeper, it’s claimed that Mac Allister ‘raised his personal level and that of his teammates.’

Great praise, although strangely Alexis was only given a rating of 6. Either way, well done, Macca!

Mac Allister excels in deeper role

It’s still taking a bit of getting used to having one of the Reds playing regularly alongside the great Messi.

But although Lionel Scaloni does have a plethora of midfield options to choose from, Mac Allister is still getting the nod.

He played 77 minutes last night, before being replaced by Leandro Paredes.

By the sounds of things, Argentina struggled to break Ecuador down, relying on the genius of Messi to pull them over the line.

What’s interesting from a Liverpool perspective though, is how Mac Allister was used. Starting left of a midfield three, the Reds no.10 seems to have had a better game playing at the base of that trio.

Of course, that’s actually where he’s been playing for Liverpool of late. Even after the arrival of Wataru Endo, Mac Allister has been handed the responsibility of the most defensive midfielder.

We didn’t necessarily see it coming, but perhaps this is where his future lies, for club and country.
