Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham have made an ‘outstanding’,signing best signing of this summer

Tottenham Hotspur may have lost Harry Kane’s services this summer, but they’ve done fairly good incoming business overall.

Spurs have signed a host of players this summer. Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison, Manor Solomon, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz and Micky van de Ven have all joined.

With Tottenham talisman Kane going to Bayern Munich for an initial £86million, Spurs have money in the bank to bolster their ranks further.

New strikers are likely to be the main priority for Ange Postecoglou. And there’s scope for another defender and midfielder too.

While transfer business will continue until the start of September, the Tottenham boss now has to turn his attentions to competitive football returning.

Ahead of Spurs’ Premier League opener against Brentford, Postecoglou spoke at length about several topics, including recent signings.

Maddison is arguably the most high-profile Tottenham summer arrival, an England international who has long been tearing it up in the Premier League.

‘He’s been brilliant’

On Friday, football.london asked Postecoglou whether Maddison would be able to fill part of the hole left by Kane’s switch to Bavaria.

“He was one of the first pieces of business we did,” replied the Spurs head coach.

“He was available and I was really excited to bring him into the group. Knowing what we needed to build here.

“And again, knowing if Harry was going to leave that’s a fair few goals walking out of the door and knowing you can’t just replace that with one player.

“An area of the club that needing bolstering was midfield threat in terms of goals. And that’s what Madders provides – goals and assists.

“If we’ve going to cover the fact that Harry’s gone and all the goals are leaving with him, we’re going to have to spread that out and Madders provides that.

“He’s been brilliant since he’s come in, he’s been outstanding. Not just in the games but in training. And the way he’s embraced the club and developed in the football we want to play.”

Our view

Tottenham struck gold when it came to signing Maddison. Things certainly aligned perfectly for Spurs on that front.

We’ve all seen what he can do. And Sky Sports recently wrote about his impressive stats over the past few years.

‘His status among the elite is evident in the statistics,’ they wrote when he joined Tottenham.

‘Since his arrival at Leicester from Norwich in 2018, only two players – Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold – have created more chances in the Premier League.

‘While only three – Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son – have had more shots on goal.

‘Maddison also ranks in the top eight for assists and big chances created. With 43 goals in that period, only 18 players have scored more.’

As luck would have it, Maddison got relegated with Leicester – despite his best offers – as his contract was heading into its last 12 months.

As a result, Spurs managed to sign him for a modest fee, all things considered. Now, it’ll be exciting to see how he fares in navy and white.

‘Super’: Graeme Souness says Tottenham have made an even better signing than Declan Rice

Tottenham Hotspur fans are reeling after losing Harry Kane, but they mustn’t forget that it’s not been all doom and gloom in north London this summer.

Indeed, Tottenham have an exciting new manager through the door, and they’ve also made a number of good signings.

The likes of Micky Van de Ven and Manor Solomon are exciting young talents, but, of course, James Maddison, has been the big name addition so far this summer.

Graeme Souness is a big fan of this signing, and writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Souness actually ranked Maddison as one of the signings of the summer – ahead of the likes of Declan Rice.

Maddison a top signing
Souness shared how much he’s a fan of Maddison.

“He’s had 39 goal contributions from midfield over the past two seasons (22 goals, 17 assists) and those numbers put him right up there with the best,” Souness wrote.

“I have a lot of time for him, he’s a super player. Harry Kane, if he stays, will love playing with him. Maddison will quickly become Kane’s most frequent supplier of opportunities to put the ball in the net. He will pick Kane out in tight areas, if he is there!

“This is a different type of pressure, though, coming from Leicester. He played with freedom there and there is a bit more on your shoulders at Spurs, especially if it doesn’t start well for them.”

Could be inspired
This could be a truly inspired signing by Tottenham.

Maddison is a proven star at this level, and even without Kane leading the line, he should create bundles of chances for whoever is leading the line for Spurs this season.

Of course, whether or not Maddison does prove to be a better signing than Rice remains to be seen, but Souness certainly thinks that this could be an incredible bit of business.

Kane may have gone, but there’s still a lot to be excited about at Tottenham.

Tottenham fast weighing up a bid to sign 22-year-old former EPL young star
August 9, 2023 admin
The Welshman was a key player for Forest last season.

Tottenham Hotspur are “weighing up a bid” for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson this summer, and the package might include players.

Ange Postecoglou, the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has had a pretty productive pre-season as supporters get a taste of his new-look offensive style, which contrasts with the more rigid ways of predecessors like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.

The 57-year-old is entrusted with instilling optimism and hope in this Tottenham team after Conte’s tenure ended on a sour note, with the Italian publicly criticizing his teammates before departing.

There will be no European football at Spurs this season, unfortunately, and Postecoglou will be aiming to fix that by the end of the 2023/2024 campaign.

The Spurs boss has been boosted by a plethora of new signings to help in that regard, after the club completed deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, youngster Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz.

Postecoglou, speaking to media recently, suggested that his side could add more defensive signings and urges Tottenham to do so – as he aims to play aggressively out from the back.

“It’s not done yet,” Postecoglou added.

“We need reinforcements in that central defensive area.” We require defenders who can work in an aggressive formation, defend effectively, and defend behind them. In the following days, we’ll be looking to bring in a couple in that area.”

Tottenham have also been connected with acquisitions in the future, including Forest winger Johnson, according to a report by The Telegraph and journalist Matt Law.

Johnson, who shone for Forest under Steve Cooper last season, is a target for Spurs and might be the subject of an unusual late offer.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham are “weighing up a bid” for the Wales international, and this approach could involve them offering one of Djed Spence, Joe Rodon or Bryan Gil in an exchange-type deal.

Not much else is said on when they could make this proposal, or if there is any money involved, but it comes as an interesting update given Johnson’s potential.

How good is Brennan Johnson?
Over the course of 2022/2023, the 22-year-old showed out as one of Forest’s major attacking players. According to WhoScored, Johnson was in the top two for efforts on goal and critical passes made per 90 minutes.

He also contributed 11 goals and three assists in the English Premier League, with Wales national team head Robert Page earlier praising the forward.

In 2022, Page stated of Johnson’s form that he’s “almost the finished article” and a “wonderful” player.

“Brennan could have made a move in January,” Page (via The Independent) speculated.

“However, he decided to stay because he was at a club where he could play and enjoy his football.”

“That speaks volumes about him. He didn’t go chasing the money. He’s almost the finished article now and Forest have got a wonderful player on their hands.

“I’ve been to watch him a few times and he’s playing with freedom. He’s really enjoying his football.”
