Liverpool suffered another injury blow last night as left-back Andy Robertson was forced off in Scotland’s friendly defeat to Northern Ireland.

The defender started for the second game in a row for his nation following Friday’s 4-0 loss to the Netherlands. Robertson was forced off in the first half at Hampden Park after being on the receiving end of a rough tackle from Trai Hume.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that the 30-year-old’s problem isn’t too bad ahead of the return of Premier League action. The Reds will host Brighton on Sunday, March 31, though for now the squad is spread across the globe competing for their countries.

The latest internationals saw Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo feature for Colombia and the Netherlands respectively while Ibrahima Konate played for 90 minutes for France on last night, despite all leaving Merseyside with fitness concerns.

Here the ECHO analyses the fitness of 10 players Liverpool boss Klopp will be sweating on ahead of the visit of Brighton to Anfield.

Andy Robertson’s 63rd international appearance for Scotland ended early as he was forced off after 37 minutes. Steve Clarke’s struggling side lost 1-0 after Robertson’s Liverpool team-mate Conor Bradley scored his first goal for Northern Ireland.

The defender, who missed a large part of the season due to a shoulder injury sustained playing for Scotland in October, held his ankle before looking dejected walking off the pitch.

Scotland boss Clarke said: “He’s just come off the pitch, let the injury take it’s course, he’ll go back to his club, they will assess it and hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Darwin Nunez
Darwin Nunez was arguably in his finest form in Red heading into the international break, scoring four goals and providing two assists in four appearances. It earned him another call-up for Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad. However, that had to be turned down as the striker suffered a potential hamstring injury against Manchester United.

He had also been ruled out briefly in February, though Klopp and his medical staff remain hopeful that the issue is not a serious one. It is yet to be known whether Nunez will be fit in time for the visit of Brighton.

Potential return date: Brighton (H) – March 31.

Curtis Jones
Another player who was becoming one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet week-in, week-out, Curtis Jones unexpectedly suffered an awkward landing on his ankle against Brentford in mid-February and has been out of action since.

Thankfully, though, his progress looks to have been timed perfectly for the return of the Premier League this week with his manager hopeful of his involvement in some capacity against the Seagulls. This will hinge on his progress during the break.

Potential return date: Brighton (H) – March 31.

Trent Alexander-Arnold
A big miss has been the creativity of Trent-Alexander Arnold, though with the rise of Bradley, Liverpool have coped well in the full-back’s absence.

The vice-captain nears a return from the knee injury that has kept him sidelined for the majority of 2024 so far, but still has some work to do. Klopp stated that he did not expect Alexander-Arnold back until the second week after the break, which matches up with the away league visit to Manchester United on Sunday, April 7.

Potential return date: Manchester United (A) – April 7.

Diogo Jota
Also taking a blow against Brentford, Diogo Jota came off worse after being landed on by an opponent. The problem was later revealed to be a knee injury and Liverpool have been hopeful of their instinctive finisher’s return ever since.

Like Alexander-Arnold, early April was as much detail as was revealed about Jota’s return. It means the first couple of fixtures should be too early, though United remains a possibility.

Potential return date: Manchester United (A) – April 7.

Alisson Becker
A hamstring issue has prevented Liverpool’s No.1 from standing between the sticks for some big matches since February, however Caoimhin Kelleher has stepped up in his absence.

All has been quiet about an exact return date for Alisson Becker though there evidently is no rush given his importance to the team. Expect an update from Klopp once domestic action is back in full flow.

Potential return date: Unknown.

Stefan Bajcetic
Stefan Bajcetic has been an unfortunate absence given his exciting maiden campaign in England. The 19-year-old has been nursing various setbacks over the course of the season but is excitingly closing in on a comeback.

The defensive midfielder has been building up to match fitness, being pictured at the AXA Training Centre this week with a much bigger frame and enhanced leg muscles. He is effectively going through his own pre-season before being allowed to rejoin full-team training with Klopp and the squad.

Potential return date: April.

Thiago Alcantara
That five-minute cameo in February’s defeat to Arsenal may be the only sight of Thiago Alcantara in what is appearing to be his final campaign on Merseyside, given the 32-year-old’s contract will expire in a matter of months.

It is not confirmed yet if that will be the case, though he faces a race against time to overcome his latest hamstring problem before the end of the season.

Potential return date: Unknown.

Joel Matip
Joel Matip has been recovering from an ACL injury sustained against Fulham in December. The central defender is in the same boat as Thiago, with his contract also on course to expire at the end of the season.

He was snapped in a social media post by Mohamed Salah putting in work at the AXA Training Centre.

Potential return date: Unknown.

Ben Doak
The 2023/24 campaign looked to be a big one for the young Scotsman, however a knee injury suffered playing for the Reds’ Under-21s in December curtailed that.

His particular issue is believed to require a lengthy spell of recovery, therefore there remains no clear timeframe for Ben Doak’s return.

Potential return date: Unknown

However, those behind the scenes at the Etihad appear to be making plans on summer targets. Reports in recent days have suggested that Man City are ready to make a bid for Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, whereas they are also monitoring Bayern Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

Recently, City full-back Joao Cancelo, currently out on loan with Barcelona, hit out at claims that he was a bad teammate to Nathan Ake and Rico Lewis before his loan to Bayern Munich, where he was hailed as an “important player” by former Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic.

“Lies were told! I’ve never been a bad teammate for them and you can ask either Ake or Rico. I don’t have any superiority or inferiority complex towards them, but that’s the manager’s opinion.

“I think Man City were a bit ungrateful to me when they said that, because I was a very important player in the years I was there. I never failed in my commitment to the club, to the fans and I always gave everything.

“I remember a time when I was robbed and attacked and the next day I was playing at the Emirates against Arsenal. These are things you don’t forget, I left my wife and my daughter alone at home, terrified.

“People will only remember this because Mister Guardiola has much more strength than me when he says something and I prefer to keep to myself. I prefer to know that I am telling the truth, I feel fulfilled with what I did. I am a transparent person, I never lie.”

Football Insider have now provided a new update on Cancelo’s future at Man City, saying that the Portugal international has played his last game for the club.

Cancelo doesn’t want to return to the Etihad following his loan at Barcelona, and the feeling is mutual, with City not wanting him back either.

It will be interesting to see where the £250,000-a-week defender ends up, especially following rumours of a move to top-flight rival Arsenal in recent days.

Sometimes there is a great disparity between how a player plays for the club team and then how they play for their national team. A great case in example, is Cody Gakpo.

The Liverpool forward has been a really valuable part of the Reds’ squad this season. He’s already got 18 goal contributions for Liverpool in all competitions and has rarely missed a game due to injury. Based on those factors, it’s difficult to criticise him – Gakpo is delivering when it matters.

However, recently he has come under a little bit of criticism. Over the course of Liverpool’s last few games there is no denying, that especially, when Gakpo was introduced from the bench he has made little impact. Yet conversely, for his national team, Gakpo showed a completely different side to his game. Someone who didn’t look like he was out of form at all.

What Cody Gakpo’s form can teach Jurgen Klopp
For the Netherlands, Gakpo has been one of the country’s most important players over the last few months, or even years. Ever since the World Cup, where he was the country’s top-scorer at the tournament in Qatar.

Meanwhile, in his last five games for the Netherlands, Gakpo also has five goal contributions (three goals and two assists). Including two brilliant assists against Scotland in the Netherlands’ most recent international fixture.

So why has Gakpo been able to become such a linchpin of the national team? The answer lies in how he is used. For Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp often deploys Gakpo with his back to goal playing as the focal point of the attack. However, for the Netherlands, Gakpo is used often as a wide left-winger.

Sometimes he is used centrally but often playing in behind a striker, which means he is more of a number ten rather than the nine that he is expected to play at Liverpool. This may offer a clue as to how to best utilise him in a Liverpool shirt as well.

Gakpo is much more effective when he can drop deeper and pick the ball up to advance into dangerous areas. He is less effective when playing with his back to goal. If Klopp wants to fully maximise Gakpo’s ability, then this is something that must be taken into consideration. Gakpo simply doesn’t have the strength at the moment to be a number nine. But he does have the speed and the technical ability to run at opponents and beat them with ease.

Xabi Alonso is the top target to become next Liverpool manager

Liverpool have been given a significant lift in their quest to appoint Xabi Alonso as the heir to Jurgen Klopp after promiment broadcaster Richard Keys claimed the Spaniard has given the green light to the move – though an update on the situation from Fabrizio Romano perhaps tempers that belief.

The Merseysiders are now less than three months away from waving a tearful farewell to legendary boss Klopp, who will walk away from Anfield for a much needed rest after close to nine, intense and exciting years at the Liverpool helm. His last match in charge, however, is still to be determined and will either come at home to Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday May 19, or three days later, in the Dublin-staged Europa League final on Wednesday May 22.

The Reds would, understandably, love to bid farewell to their charismatic German coach with a big party in the nearest capital city to Anfield in what would prove a fitting farewell to Klopp’s Anfield reign.

And while emotions are sure to get the better of many Liverpool fans, behind the scenes the club cannot afford to get too emotional and are well into the process of identifying – and hopefully appointing – his successor.

That task is being put in the very capable hands of the returning Michael Edwards, who is back at Anfield but this time with the more senior role of CEO of football.

Having landed on a new sporting director first up in Richard Hughes, the focus is now very much centred on landing Klopp’s heir – with former Anfield icon Alonso firmly in their sights.

However, persuading him to quit Bayer Leverkusen will far from a straightforward task.

Indeed, TEAMtalk has revealed Alonso’s trepidation at stepping into Klopp’s very sizeable shoes at Anfield, while Bayern Munich are also very much hot on his heels and remain hopeful of persuading him to move across Germany to the Allianz Arena.

There is also the small matter that, after assembling a squad of players whom are unbeaten across 38 matches in all competitions this season, the 42-year-old will be loathe to leave a Leverkusen side who are very much strong favourites to win a first Bundesliga crown in their history.

However, we also understand that Edwards has put before Alonso’s people the offer of a three-year deal to become the next Liverpool manager and, in light of those claims, promiment broadcaster Richard Keys has now revealed that Alonso has said yes to taking the job.

That said, the beIN Sport anchor also claims that sealing a deal is another matter altogether.

“As I always say when I share news like this – these big deals can always go wrong,” Keys wrote on his blog. “There’s a lot to go wrong when they’re blue riband, whether it’s a player or coach/manager involved, but my information is that Alonso has decided on Liverpool.

“If I’m a Liverpool fan – that excites me.”

Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky is also bracing himself for Alonso’s departure.

“That’s our wish and dream, for him to stay, but no-one would be angry or argue if he wins the Bundesliga and decides to go another route,” said Finland keeper Hradecky.

“We see on a daily basis that he loves to be in Leverkusen. He enjoys Dusseldorf where he lives. From another point of view: How can you make it better than this season?”

Hradecky continued: “There’s a lot to ponder but he’s enough of a gentleman to make the right decision and only he knows what’s best for him.

“But the atmosphere he’s brought in Leverkusen, we didn’t have it before. I think it comes from the way he has experienced football.

“In Madrid, Liverpool – that’s the level we strive for every day. It was here when he came but it’s up here right now. The hype is definitely justified.

“It’s the best Leverkusen team I’ve experienced. We have 18, 19, 20 players – and it doesn’t matter who plays. There are a lot of different tactics. There’s a lot to take in from the opponents’ perspective. It’s hellishly difficult to play against us.”

Liverpool do have two other options if their move for Alonso fails with Roberto De Zerbi and, principly, Ruben Amorim also on Edwards’ wanted list.

However, their number one focus undoubtedly remains Alonso and trusted journalist Romano has underlined just how determined they are to land him, though admits his appointment will be far from easy.

“At the moment Xabi Alonso’s only focus, despite links with Liverpool and Bayern Munich, is on winning three titles with Bayer Leverkusen,” he began in his column for CaughtOffside.

“Earlier in the season, Alonso started to consider some possibilities, and there were enquiries to see his contract situation at Leverkusen, but for now his only focus is on finishing this season strongly.”

‘Situation around Liverpool target has radically changed’
Romano admits Liverpool will not have it easy landing their man despite a strong obession with getting it done.

Explaining how Leverkusen’s stance on Alonso’s exit has changed over the intervening months, Romano added: “In around December, the situation changed completely and Leverkusen understood that they had a real chance of winning the Bundesliga, and so Alonso is only focused on that. They are now the favourites, and they will also be looking at the Europa League as well, then after that we’ll see about his future.

“I don’t think it’s going to be easy to hear anything concrete in March or April.

“Also Alonso is under contract with Leverkusen and there is no specific clause for this summer, so it means clubs have to go there and negotiate and no one wants to distract them in this moment.”

Discussing how and why a move could happen, Romano concluded: “I’m sure Liverpool and Bayern are obsessed with Alonso and want to present their projects to him, but it’s really too early to know what he’s going to decide.

“I think it will depend on when they win the Bundesliga and how things go for them in the Europa League as well.”

Alonso has taken charge of Leverkusen in 75 matches since his appointment in October 2022, winning 50 of them, giving him a 66.67 win percentage.

Liverpool could make a shock managerial appointment in the coming months that doesn’t involve Xabi Alonso, due to a new development at Anfield in recent weeks.

Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool since the German manager announced his decision to leave the club in January, and a move has seemed nailed on for the last month or so now.

That might not happen, however, now that former sporting director Michael Edwards is back in a position of power at Anfield. Liverpool’s owners FSG appointed Edwards FSG’s CEO of football earlier this month, which will see him move into a more overarching position at the club where his remit will extend to overseeing the ownership’s purchase of another team.

Having previously had a huge influence on signings at the club during his time as sporting director between 2016 and 2022 – such as the deals for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson – a new report suggests that Edwards could have a similar impact in their hunt for the next manager.
