‘Bit early’ – Report exposes why the 18-year-old opted to reject Spurs

Tottenham had been extensively rumored in recent months to be interested in Vermeeren, who is seen as the next possible breakout star in Belgian football.

Alasdair Gold of Football.London stated earlier this week that Spurs are still tracking the 18-year-old and are contemplating signing him before loaning him back to Royal Antwerp for the rest of the season.

However, Spurs were dealt a significant setback a few days ago when it was revealed that Atletico Madrid had agreed to pay €22 million (£18.8 million) plus add-ons for the midfielder’s transfer to Antwerp.

According to Het Belang van Limburg, Vermeeren did not consider an approach from Tottenham early this window, but was much more open to the La Liga side’s efforts.

This is because the Belgian international believes it is a ‘little early’ to make the move to the Premier League.

Vermeeren could have believed that playing in Spain would be more beneficial to his growth. However, his selection does not really make sense, given Tottenham’s style of play would suit him far more than Atletico Madrid’s.
