‘A disgrace’ – Mark Goldbridge has said what every Liverpool fan will be thinking today

Mark Goldbridge may be a Manchester United supporter, but there’ll be Liverpool fans worldwide nodding in agreement with his take on one massively contentious incident in the Premier League last night.

Manchester City came from behind to beat Everton 3-1, with the goal to give them the lead arriving courtesy of a penalty given against the Toffees for a baffling handball decision involving Amadou Onana.

It came four days after the Reds had a stonewall spot kick denied to them when the officials at Anfield somehow failed to deem Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard guilty of a much clearer handball offence inside the box.

The inconsistency wasn’t lost on Goldbridge, who posted on X at the time of the incident at Goodison Park: “So Odegaard wasn’t a penalty in a title decider when he moved the ball away but City get that. The officiating in this title race this season is a disgrace”.

When one of the highest-profile Man United fans in the world is adamant that Liverpool are bearing the brunt of shockingly bad refereeing decisions in the Premier League title race, you know the situation is chronic.

How the officials felt no need to penalise Odegaard for literally scooping the ball away like someone about to hand out a portion of ice cream, yet deemed Onana guilty of handling a shot from close range which struck underneath his arm is mind-boggling, to put it politely.

There’s one common denominator to both incidents – the presence of David Coote on VAR. The same man who had the same role in October 2020 when Jordan Pickford got away scot-free with breaking Virgil van Dijk’s leg, and who disallowed what would’ve been a Jordan Henderson winner for an imaginary offside against Sadio Mane (The Mirror).

In the context of Liverpool being deprived of two legitimate goals against Burnley on Boxing Day, the penalty given to Man City last night serves only to heighten the sense among Reds supporters that something is badly amiss when it comes to officiating.

We won’t go down the road of crying corruption or anything like that, but it’s impossible not to be enraged when looking at some of the decisions made in our matches over the past week and compare it to a huge and controversial call which went in the champions’ favour against Everton.

It’s even taken a Man United supporter to weigh in on our side!

Ange Postecoglou will once again be forced to field a shuffled defense after the latest injury blow to Cristian Romero.

The Argentinean centre-back was taken off at half-time against Everton and the manager confirmed after the game that it was due to a tight hamstring.

And although reports emerged that the defender is expected to make a swift return to the starting XI against Brighton, Ange today confirmed that the 25-year-old will miss 4 to 5 weeks of action due to the hamstring injury.

This comes as a huge blow for Spurs who were just starting to get back to winning ways after injuries had derailed their terrific start to the season.

Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick has now named the player who is expected to replace Romero in the starting XI against Brighton.

Ange will have Eric Dier available to him but as per Dan, right-back Emerson Royal is set to play as a make-shift centre-back alongside Ben Davies.

Ange will also have young centre-back Ashley Phillips as an option who has just returned from an injury of his own.

Manchester City will be without a trio of notable first-team players for their Premier League clash against Everton on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s side return to Premier League action this week after their success in Saudi Arabia, claiming the club’s first ever FIFA Club World Cup title with victory over Brazilian giants Fluminense in Jeddah.

A convincing 4-0 victory over the South American side saw Manchester City make it five trophies claimed in a historic 2023 calendar year, with Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden, and a Nino own goal rounding up the scoresheet.

Top-flight form will be of upmost importance to the reigning Premier League champions however, and they will be keen to transform their fine performances in the Middle-East and their back-to-back clean sheets into domestic action.

Kevin De Bruyne’s return to first-team training will come as a major boost to the football club, with the Belgian starring in Saudi Arabia on the training ground pitches and back in Manchester, although the meeting with Everton could come too early for him.

Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland have made strides towards a return to first-team training, but having not featured in any portion of the FIFA Club World Cup campaign, the meeting with Everton is also likely to come too soon for the attacking pairing.

Ahead of the reveal of the confirmed line-ups from both the Merseyside and Mancunian clubs at Goodison Park this evening, a number of sources have began revealing elements of Manchester City’s starting line-up on social media.

As per X user FPLMaineRoad, both Haaland and Doku will play no part in Manchester City’s meeting with Everton, whilst Ruben Dias is also set to be an omission from the starting line-up, with the reason for his absence unknown at the time of reporting.

As per the same source, Matheus Nunes starts for Manchester City. Phil Foden, Rodri, and Julian Alvarez are also part of the starting line-up, according to ElBobble.

In additional details, as per the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, Jack Grealish starts for Pep Guardiola – presumably in the left-sided attacking role, in the absence of Jeremy Doku.

Manchester City’s defensive line, according to X user C345Sam, is likely to consist of Kyle Walker, Manuel Akanji, John Stones, and Nathan Ake.

The Manchester Evening News have also collated the complete Manchester City matchday squad in attendance at Goodison Park, with the 20-man squad as follows:

Ederson, Ortega; Lewis, Walker, Stones, Akanji, Gvardiol, Ake, Gomez; Rodri, Phillips, Kovacic, Susoho, Nunes, Bernardo; Bobb, Hamilton, Grealish, Alvarez, Foden.

Sean Dyche and Pep Guardiola are expected to confirm their respective Everton and Manchester City starting line-ups from approximately 19:15 (UK) on Wednesday night.

Now confirmed.
