WHAT HAPPENED? The VAR controversy regarding Luis Diaz’s wrongly cancelled goal just refuses to die down. Tottenham got a 2-1 victory over the Reds in a Premier League encounter, but things could have been different if Diaz’s opener had stood.

This prompted Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, to suggest a replay of the fixture. Although the coach later claimed that his words were misinterpreted by the media, the damage was already done and Maddison trolled Alexander-Arnold for his manager’s bizarre request after the duo got reunited in the England camp.

The Spurs midfielder shared an Instagram story and captioned: “Still asking for a replay!”

However, Alexander-Arnold paid it back to him with the same coin as he brutally roasted Maddison during an interview with Channel 4.

When asked if they were actually discussing the VAR incident he replied: “Nah! No, he was asking me to teach him how to put a free-kick in the top corner. But, I told him, I’d just shown him the video when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Liverpool indeed beat the Foxes 3-0 on May 16 earlier this year with Alexander-Arnold scoring the third after a first-half brace from Curtis Jones. The defeat further made it difficult for Leicester to stay afloat and they got relegated to the Championship last season after finishing in the 18th spot.

WHAT NEXT? Maddison & Alexander-Arnold might be in action against Australia in a friendly with the Three Lions on Friday evening.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was on target as his beloved Uruguay recorded a 2-0 win over Brazil in their World Cup qualifier.

The main headlines after the game might have been around Neymar’s injury, but Liverpool’s all-action forward deserves flowers for his performance.

Overnight, Darwin Nunez took to Instagram to express his delight at such a win, with players and teammates from across the globe thanking him.

Real Madrid star Federico Valverde wrote in the comments section of his post ‘this is insane’, with his club teammate, Cody Gakpo, applauding his efforts.

The reaction from within the comments section was obvious as to how crucial this was for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

That win puts the team in second place, behind leaders and world champions Argentina, with Brazil and Venezuela, who didn’t qualify for Qatar, currently in fourth after four matches.

Liverpool will be hoping that Nunez returns to Merseyside and uses this fuel to push Jurgen Klopp’s side up the Premier League table.

The Reds are going to be straight in the thick of the action when they return, with the Merseyside derby first up as the early kick-off on Saturday.

That’s when the European games continue as Liverpool hope to maintain their 100% start, with the League Cup also continuing next month.

Manchester City are keen to sign Jamal Musiala and are monitoring the Bayern Munich No.42’s situation.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the story?
Well, it was The Secret Scout who first revealed that Manchester City want to sign the Germany international as a long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne.

Now, Romano has added further information.

Speaking on YouTube, the reliable Italian journalist said: “At the moment Jamal Musiala’s contract expires in 2026, and there is still no agreement with Bayern to extend the contract. Why? Because the discussion was with the old management of Bayern, then the management changed and it’s still changing.

“For Bayern, it is an absolute priority. They know that other clubs will be in the race, we’ve had reports of Liverpool, but trust me, it’s not just Liverpool, many important clubs around Europe are keeping eyes on Musiala. Clubs in Spain, in England, not just Liverpool… people at Manchester City and Chelsea have been keeping an eye on Musiala as he’s one of the best talents in the world.”

Ian Holloway has now heaped praise on Pep Guardiola for telling Joao Cancelo to leave Manchester City.

The 60-year-old made the comment when speaking on the Pitch Side podcast.

What’s the story?
Well, the Bristolian was discussing how important it is for football’s best players to also possess a strong work rate and a good attitude – aside from just being superb technicians in possession.

That is when Guardiola and Cancelo entered the conversation.

Holloway said: “Pep is all about strangling you, and then dominating you, and then strangling you again. He don’t give you any air whatsoever, and it’s all about winning. Winning the ball back and being great.

“If you’re as good as he wants you to be, but you don’t put value on winning the ball back, he’ll get rid of you. Look at Cancelo last year. I’m sorry, no one has mentioned it. They kicked him out! When he was the full-back of the year. Why? Because your attitude ain’t good enough son. How brilliant is that?”

If you are not aware, Guardiola is said to have forced Cancelo away from the Etihad Stadium after being left dismayed by the Portugal international’s attitude back in December and January.

The 29-year-old had just lost his place to Rico Lewis, and according to the Guardian, Guardiola was shocked by how poorly Cancelo responded.

It consequently led to the Barreiro-born technician moving to Bayern Munich on loan in the second half of last season.

Guardiola was in no mood to forgive Cancelo over the summer either, as a second loan, this time to Barcelona, was then green lighted by the Spaniard.

Manchester City and Guardiola may not see Cancelo again
Cancelo has impressed on loan at Barcelona so far this season, and if reports are true, he may have already played his final game for Manchester City.

The Daily Star believe Barcelona have already agreed a permanent purchase option with Manchester City for just £24.3m next summer.

Therefore, if Cancelo continues to impress, Barcelona will surely trigger that option in 2024.
