Ryan Mason grateful that Oliver Skipp avoided serious injury aganist Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur acting head coach Ryan Mason is grateful that Oliver Skipp did not suffer a serious injury during his side’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool last Sunday.
Skipp, 22, was on the receiving end of a high boot from Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in the 81st minute of the game, which led to the midfielder needing stitches.
Jota was not sent off for the tackle and went on to score the winner in the 94th-minute and Mason said that the club is happy that Skipp avoided serious injury.
Mason said: “(Skipp) is a very, very lucky boy.
“He had a couple of gashes in his head. Needed near to ten stitches and we are talking about a couple of inches away from an eye problem.
“I think the overall feeling this week is we are quite grateful Skippy is okay and nothing too serious.”
A video of the Jota apologising to Skipp after the game at Anfield surfaced on social media last weekend.
Mason had his career ended prematurely at the age of 26 after suffering a serious head injury while playing for Hull City against Chelsea in 2017
When asked if Skipp’s situation had any similarities to his career-ending injury six years ago, the 31-year-old added: “Obviously (it is) a different situation, different moment as well.
“One was with a head, one was with a boot so the dangers are different. At the same time, the head is a vulnerable part of the body. We continue to see that.
“Thankfully Skippy is okay. He is in contention and has trained this week.”
Tottenham are next in action when they host Crystal Palace on Saturday.
