Jürgen Klopp almost has ‘complete’ forward at Liverpool as deadly new weapon becoming clear
Darwin Núñez’s cameo against Leicester once again highlighted a new skill he has learned at Liverpool and something Jürgen Klopp should be very pleased about.

“MASSIVE STEPS” | JURGEN KLOPP ON DARWIN NUNEZ RECENT PROGRESS
Darwin Núñez seems to be thriving in a Liverpool shirt of late. After a very good start to the season, the Uruguayan just keeps getting better, and it seems like he is finally ready to accomplish what he set out to do under Jürgen Klopp when he arrived at Anfiled last year.

Dominating the headlines over the last couple of weeks, against Leicester, Núñez was forced to take more of a side-character approach. Klopp had decided to rest the Liverpool forward after starting him in the club’s last two games, ahead of a crucial clash on Saturday against Tottenham.

The Uruguayan will have been disappointed to miss out, but he still had the opportunity to make his mark, coming on in the 60th minute when the Reds were still at a stalemate with Leicester.

Straight away, Núñez was involved in the action and caused Leicester’s towering defender, Harry Souttar, who is 1.98 meters tall, plenty of uncomfortable moments.

His role in Liverpool’s second goal should not be discredited either. Núñez received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and was immediately surrounded by three Leicester defenders, yet somehow he managed to hold the ball up, retain possession and recycle the ball back to Wataru Endō, who then could switch the play to Dominik Szoboszlai who as a result of the Uruguayan’s run had acres of space ahead of him on the other side of the box.

It’s actions like these that often go unnoticed by the casual observer, but definitely would not have gone under Klopp’s radar. The ability to draw opponents away and keep hold of the ball are essential traits of a typical forward, and it’s something Núñez didn’t do often during his first season at the club, but has now become a new feature in his game.

Just over 10 days ago now against Wolves, Núñez made another brilliant hold-up play before Liverpool’s third goal, shrugging off the defender and sending him tumbling to the ground to set Mohamed Salah running. That kind of aggressive, determined and decisive forward play is likely to continue to prove deadly.

Núñez then followed up his run and made a dash into the box, drawing away Wolves defenders and allowing Harvey Elliott to receive a pass on the edge of the box virtually uncontested which gave him the opportunity to unleash an effort on goal that ended up in the back of the net.

As much as his goals and his assists have been crucial for Liverpool this season, moments like these where he may not get the recognition, he deserves have been vital as well. This season, Núñez has shown he is much more of a ‘complete’ forward than many would have thought. His movement is more calculated and his finishing is more precise.

With time, he will only get better as well, but already it’s obvious Klopp has a new weapon; a weapon that maybe he hasn’t quite had before at Anfield, since it’s the first time he has a proper traditional number nine operating in the front three on a regular basis.
