Unai Emery owns up to ‘mistake’ and makes Aston Villa promise ahead of Chelsea clash
has admitted he made a tactical mistake in Aston Villa’s defeat at Legia Warsaw on Thursday night.
Villa twice came back from behind in the first half, but failed to respond when Legia scored their third early in the second period. Jhon Duran scored his fourth goal of the season to equalise in the sixth minute after Villa fell behind in the opening stages of the match, before Lucas Digne was on hand to level the score before half-time after Ernest Muci bagged his first goal of the night.
Muci was a real threat in Legia’s attack and he scored his brace to give Legia a deserved lead after the break. Ahead of the club’s Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Emery was asked how he reflects on Thursday night’s defeat. He said: “Of course, I am using my experiences in Europe and playing a lot of matches during the week. We are now building the team
“We didn’t want to lose, but it was a possibility. We need to build, to try to get performances with some players who joined us at the last moment, like Lenglet, like some players who are not playing regularly. They will help us and they will have to play and to do not only 11, 12, 15 we need. We will need 20, 22, 25 players. There have been injuries with Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia, and then a small injury like Diego Carlos.”
Emery added: “We made some mistakes, not usually tactical mistakes, but I spoke with the players, it was a small accident. We will analyse and react to improve the mistakes we did yesterday.
“The players, they are as well very excited for the Conference League and we are going to play another five matches. Everything that happened yesterday was to learn and to build the team in the way we want. There was a small tactical mistake and it is my responsibility to work on it.”
