Stoke City signed off their last away fixture in pre-season with a 1-0 win over Burton Albion to claim the Bass Charity Vase.
The Potters dominated the first half with plenty of chances from Ben Pearson, trialist Josh Onomah, Jacob Brown and Ki-Jana Hoever all coming close. But the first half remained goalless.
Chiqunho showed electric pace inside the first ten minutes lifting Stoke fans off their seat. The Portuguese loan star played some neat backheel passes that stunned the Potters away crowd before being subbed at half-time.
The Potters opened the scoring through Jacob Brown in the 54th minute. A low cross by Josh Tymon made it an easy finish for the Scotland international who finished into the roof of the net from six yards out.
Latest signing Andre Vidigal was introduced to the Stoke crowd and displayed some impressive skills while Stoke preserved their one-goal advantage to bring home the trophy.
PLAYER RATINGS
Jack Bonham – Didn’t have much to do with the defence being so good. Don’t think he even made a single save.
Ki-Jana Hoever – Brilliant passes played behind the Burton defence and linked up really well with Chiqunho on the right.
Josh Tymon – Plays much better as a left back compared to left winger. Didn’t have much to do defensively but was brilliant overlapping.
Ben Wilmot – Dealt with Stockton well who has a good record in League One and worked well with Michael Rose.
Michael Rose – Didn’t get troubled much but looked comfortable on the ball when playing out from the back.
Ben Pearson – Mopped up and cut out passing lanes. Looked composed on the ball.
Chiquinho – Showed electric pace in his 45-minute debut. Linked up nicely with Hoever on right side one to keep an eye on.
Josh Laurent – Excellent in midfield and drove the ball towards the Burton defence to play others in.
Jacob Brown – Covered a lot of ground and took his goal well.
Josh Onomah (trialist) – Technically very good came close a couple of times and unlucky not to score.
Tyrese Campbell – Made some lovely runs in behind and unlucky not to score first half.
Andre Vidigal – Showed a lot of flair. Was a target for the Burton defenders but another one, like Chiquinho, who got fans off their seats and came close to scoring with a bicycle kick.
Jordan Thompson – Worked well with Laurent and Pearson. Provided a good option to play out from the back and start attacks, overall solid display.
Connor Taylor – Preserved the one goal lead and kept a clean sheet.
Lewis Macari – Made a great crunching challenge with five minutes to go which ultimately cost him in the match but shows he’s not afraid to mix it with the big boys.
Souleymane Sidibe – Played some nice passes made in the midfield and wasn’t afraid to get stuck into men’s football even at 16 years old.
Nathan Lowe – Came close to scoring but didn’t get enough time to show his quality.
Jack Griffiths – Only got five minutes at the end.
Tom Edwards – Two minutes at the end replacing Lewis Macari through injury. Used his new-found experience to see out the win.
Chance for Mark Travers to stake Ireland claim after Stoke City move
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Mark Travers has a great chance to rebuild his confidence and reputation with a successful season on loan with Stoke City in the Championship.
Travers, who was a star player for Bournemouth when they won promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago, failed to retain his starting shirt in England’s top tier as Neto signed from Barcelona and became the preferred option between the Cherries’ sticks.
In the end, it was a disappointing season for Travers who would have hoped to have become a Premier League regular – and he also paid the price at international level as he spent the last year as third choice in Stephen Kenny’s pecking order.
Ronan: Ireland fans might not hold Travers in the highest regard because of that Serbia game but he proved before by playing a full season in the Championship that he’s a fine goalkeeper. The 9-0 hammering Bournemouth got off Liverpool didn’t help his reputation but I’d fully expect him to become a favourite at Stoke City. Ideally, he’ll return to the Premier League the following a season as an older, wiser and better ‘keeper ready to challenge Bazunu for Ireland’s starting jersey.
