Stoke City news from StokeonTrentLive as the Potters receive a welcome cash boost from football’s governing body
Stoke City have received a six-figure cash windfall from FIFA following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Football’s governing body has compensated clubs for releasing players for the tournament, which was unusually held during the English season, as part of its Club Benefits Programme (CBP). A total of 209million US dollars (just over £160m) was paid out to 440 clubs, according to a report released this week.
Manchester City were paid more than any other club in the world – banking $4,596,445 (more than £3.5m) for 24 players in total who were either registered to them during the event or over the two years prior to the tournament. A total of 46 English clubs benefited from CBP in all, including a payment of $31,026 to National League side Boreham Wood related to Wales winger Sorba Thomas.
Stoke received a total of $447,142 (£341,165). They had defender Harry Souttar in action for Australia at the World Cup, while midfielder Joe Allen and goalkeeper Adam Davies, who were both in the Wales squad, were both at the club in the qualifying period before the tournament, even though they had moved on to pastures new by the time the finals came around.
Lionel Messi’s participation in Qatar meant Paris St Germain received $262,810 and his former club Barcelona were paid $131,405. PSG also received $394,215 for Kylian Mbappe’s participation in the tournament through to the final.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: “The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 provided an opportunity to celebrate football, more specifically national team football, in what proved to be the best and most exciting FIFA World Cup ever.
“Together with the players and the fans, clubs play a crucial role in making the FIFA World Cup the pinnacle of our game. In this respect, the FIFA Club Benefits Programme recognises the contribution that clubs make to the success of the FIFA World Cup, and this far reaching initiative ensures that FIFA redistributes a portion of the revenues from the competition to the clubs.
“A testament to the growing reach of this programme is the fact that clubs from all six confederations received a share of the benefits from the last FIFA World Cup, with a total of 296 clubs releasing players for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, illustrating the global impact of the tournament.
“Looking ahead, following the renewal of the memorandum of understanding with the European Club Association, the amount redistributed to clubs will further increase from USD 209 million for the 2018 and 2022 editions of the FIFA World Cup, to USD 355 million for the 2026 and 2030 tournaments, recognising yet again the importance of the role played by clubs.”

season.
Now Northamptonshire Police have released CCTV images of seven men they want to speak to as part of their investigations into the trouble. It follows the jailing of Hull City fan Lee Waud for his part in the violence.
A police spokesman said: “We are appealing for help to identify several people we would like to speak to following an incident of disorder at the Rothersthorpe Services on the M1 northbound. An altercation between groups of Hull City and Stoke City fans took place at the services as they travelled home from their final EFL Championship fixtures of the season.
“A 38-year-old man, from Hull, was sentenced to almost three years in prison and received a 10-year football banning order at Hull Crown Court last month after admitting to assaulting a Stoke City supporter during this incident. Officers are still seeking to identify more people and believe those pictured may have information which could assist with their investigation and are appealing for them or anyone who may recognise someone to get in touch.”
Anyone who knows their identities should call Northamptonshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 23000282261, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Stoke City announced the news almost a week ago now, with the 28-year-old penning a four-year deal and reuniting with Alex Neil whom he performed under at Preston North End in the past.
And another one of Stoke’s loan contingency from the second half of last season that looks set to return is Wolves goalkeeper Matija Sarkic.
The Montenegro international saw his loan spell curtailed by injury. But reports have backed the Potters to pursue a permanent move and after a bit of back and forth, John Percy now says that Stoke City are closing in on a £1.25million deal for the 25-year-old.
One player who doesn’t look set to sign for Stoke this summer though is Dion Sanderson.
Another Wolves player, Stoke had been closely linked alongside Birmingham City in the race to sign the 23-year-old, but reports this morning have revealed that Sanderson is set for a medical with Birmingham City after the club agreed a £2million fee.
And lastly, former Stoke man Nick Powell has joined League Two side Stockport County following his release at the end of last seaosn.
But reports have claimed that Powell had offers from Stoke’s Championship rivals Coventry City and West Brom, but he’s opted to drop all the way down to League Two to sign for Stockport.
The summer so far has been a fairly busy one for the Potters then, with the seemingly imminent signing of Sarkic another positive bit of business for Neil and his side.
Stoke City kick off their 2023/24 season with a home game v Rotherham United next month.
