Graeme Souness and Jamie Redknapp were left unimpressed by Liverpool in their 4-3 victory over Tottenham at Anfield.
Liverpool raced into a three-goal lead inside the first 15 minutes and looked destined to their goals-for column a real boosting before Tottenham were allowed back into the game via a combination of complacency and incisive attacking play.
Richarlison’s late equaliser from a Heung-min Son free-kick looked to have given Tottenham an unlikely point, but Diogo Jota pounced on a Lucas Moura error just 99 seconds later to win the game for the hosts.
Despite the stirring atmosphere that greeted Jota’s winner and the wild scenes that followed, including Jurgen Klopp appearing to pull his hamstring celebrating, the two Sky Sports pundits were not impressed by what they saw, insisting competent teams would have simply seen out the game to win comfortably.
‘They obviously got the three points but he (Klopp) won’t be happy with the 90 minutes,’ Souness, who was appearing as a pundit on the channel for the final time, said. ‘As young Trent (Alexander-Arnold) said there, big teams don’t play football matches like that.
Graeme Souness said that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not have been pleased with what he saw
Jamie Redknapp (C, R) echoed his colleague’s sentiments – singling out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role for particular criticism
Liverpool looked to have thrown away all three points when Richarlison snuck in
‘Big teams get the goals and then if they’re not dominating the ball they close the shop. And then they don’t give chances up.
‘And you’ve got, no doubt you’ll highlight it, but the penalty was a great shout and I think Tottenham can feel hard done to by not getting it.’
Liverpool for large spells of the game looked at sixes and sevens at the back, with both defences struggling to contain undeniably exhilarating attacking players on display for both teams.
Both sets of supporters will perhaps come away from the game feeling it was a match up that laid bare the limitations of both sides for all to see ahead of equally crucial summers in north London and Merseyside.
One area up for debate is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s new hybrid role, which sees him tuck inside into midfield when Liverpool have the ball.
